The afternoon at the Sturniolo house was like any other. Matt, Nick, and Chris were in Matt's room, huddled around his computer screen, scrolling through old videos of their childhood. It was a fun tradition to look back at those times and laugh at how awkward they were. But there was one particular video that had caught their attention, one that made them realize just how obvious Matt's feelings for YN were even back then.
"You've got to see this, bro," Chris said, elbowing Matt as he leaned in closer to the screen. The video showed a younger YN and Matt, both about 12 years old, standing together at one of their many birthday parties. What stood out was how Matt had his arm casually draped around YN's waist. It wasn't anything unusual—they were friends, after all. But looking back, it was clear Matt had a soft spot for her even then.
"Look at this," Nick laughed, pointing at the screen. "You were down bad for her, even back then! Look at your hand on her waist!"
Matt immediately turned red, his face matching the color of a tomato. "Dude, I wasn't down bad for her," he protested, but a small grin tugged at his lips. "We were just friends."
Chris wasn't having it. "Come on, man. You've got your hand on her waist like you're her boyfriend. You were already into her," he teased, leaning back and chuckling.
Matt tried to hide his smile, but it was impossible to deny it. "Okay, maybe I had a little crush on her. But we were twelve!" he said, his tone defensive but playful.
"Oh, we can tell," Nick said, laughing. "It's obvious!"
At that moment, Matt's phone buzzed with a message from YN. He picked it up quickly, eager to get her into the room to see the video for herself.
Matt: Hey, come to my room real quick. We're watching some old videos, and you're in one. It's for our YouTube video. Trust me, you'll want to see it.
YN, sitting in the family room, rolled her eyes when she saw the text. She knew Matt always had some new video idea and was probably up to something goofy. She set her book down, then typed back.
YN: This better not be another roast session. I'm coming in 5 minutes.
After a brief moment, YN stood up, put her glasses on, and made her way to Matt's room. When she walked in, she saw the boys already laughing, and Matt was grinning at her like a kid who had a secret.
"Alright, what's going on?" YN asked, crossing her arms with a smirk.
"You'll see," Matt said, patting the spot next to him on the bed. YN rolled her eyes but sat down beside him.
Matt clicked play on the video again. It was the same clip of their younger selves, but as it played, the triplets continued to laugh at the awkwardness and the way Matt had his hand on her waist. YN laughed along with them, but something caught her attention. The video was zooming in on them, and in the background, something seemed a little... off.
"Wait—pause it," YN said suddenly, squinting at the screen. "Go back, Matt."
He clicked the button and rewound the video a few seconds. YN's eyes went wide as she saw what she was looking for. Right behind them, in the far corner of the frame, there was a little drawing on the wall—something she hadn't noticed before. A heart, with her name written inside, surrounded by doodles, and in the center of it all, an arrow pointing directly at her head.
"Is that... is that me?" YN said, her voice a mix of confusion and surprise. She pointed to the screen, her finger trembling slightly. "And why is there a heart around my head?"
The triplets went quiet for a moment as they all looked at the screen. Then, Chris burst out laughing.
"No way!" Chris said between fits of laughter. "You were already drawing hearts around her head back then, Matt? That's hilarious!"
Matt's face turned scarlet, and he buried his face in his hands. "I did not put that there," he groaned, embarrassed. "I swear, I didn't. It must have been someone else."
Nick raised an eyebrow and shot him a knowing look. "Come on, Matt. You were obsessed with her even back then, and now we have the proof."
YN's mouth dropped open. "I didn't even know this was there!" she said, laughing. "Matt, what was with the hearts? You were so obvious."
Matt shrugged, still embarrassed. "I don't know, okay? I guess I was just being a little... extra. I really liked you even back then."
She smiled softly, shaking her head. "Yeah, it's pretty clear now."
The triplets went wild with laughter, teasing Matt nonstop, but YN couldn't help but feel touched by the whole thing. Even back then, when they were just kids who barely knew how to deal with their feelings, Matt had already cared about her in such a sweet way.
"Yeah, you were down bad for me even at 12," YN teased, nudging him playfully. "But it's okay, Matt. I didn't mind."
Matt chuckled softly, his hand reaching for hers. "I know. But I was too shy to do anything about it."
"Well, it's a good thing you finally figured it out," YN said with a smile, leaning in closer to him.
The triplets continued their teasing, but this time Matt didn't care. He had YN right there, and as they all laughed together, he realized that the video wasn't just a funny reminder of how things used to be—it was a reminder of how far they'd come, from being shy, awkward friends to being the couple they were today.
As the video ended, Matt leaned back in his chair, wrapping his arm around YN. "I've been down bad for you for so long," he admitted, his voice softer now, his smile affectionate.
YN looked up at him, a teasing smile on her lips. "I know. And I've been right here the whole time."
The triplets continued to laugh in the background, but for Matt and YN, the world seemed to fade away for a moment. It had always been the two of them, from the very beginning.
