The desert wasn't pleasant before when they had sun and horses. Now on foot and in the rain, the desert was even worse. Tracy thought it seamed to mock her, saying you'll never make it, why don't you just let me swallow you up? Tracy didn't let it their misfortune dampen her spirits. They wandered north without sleeping for three days. Tracy hopped desperately that they would approach civilization soon. They needed to rest, and their water supplies were running low. The team was doing great, she didn't know how they were holding up this well without food. Tracy never ate full meals at home with her father so she was used to it, but the others always ate complete meals. She couldn't imagine how bad their hunger pains must be. Tracy lead them over another steep hill. They trudged over the sand dunes, one foot at a time. Tracy reached the top of the dune, her legs wobbled toying with the idea of giving way. She looked up, her stray hairs blowing in the wind. Her eyes watered as the wind blew sand in her eyes. When the tears cleared she looked up.
"Everyone get up here, now!" She screamed excitedly. Before her stood a cool clear stream, the stream that lead up to a river. The river that joined up with Lake Cleatmist. Tracy leaped to the river side a sipped the water from her cupped hands. Then she removed her worn out shoes and soaked her feet in the water. The others came to join her, sipping the water and splashing it on their faces.
"Next step, food." Jake muttered. Alex plunged his hands into the water, his tung sticking out of the side of his mouth.
"Gotch ya!" HE yelled pulling a trout out of the water.
"Anyone know how to make a fire?"
"I've got it." Jake cheered.

"Ya can't spend three years on a farm without knowing how ta make a fire."

Sitting around a fire and eating their first god meal in days was the highlight of Tracy's day. Or at least it was for a brief ten minutes.
"I see a fire, there just over the dune!" Tracy jumped out of her skin, they had found them. Now they had to run. The others seamed to be thinking the same thing.
"Leave the fire, don't put it out." Tracy whispered.
"Then they'll think were still here." The others nodded, by the directions of Jake's compass they continued north. They walked the first bit keeping quiet.
"They got away!" yelled one of their followers, and that did it. Tracy and the rest of the clan were running like their feet had wings. Soaring across the ground, covering more distance than ever. They stopped occasionally to take a sip of water or to pick some wild berries for a snack. For the most part they ran. Tracy felt the rubber soles of her shoes grinding the stones and dirt below her feet. They were practically useless now, the bottoms were almost worn flat. They didn't even keep her feet warm. Why do I even bother keeping them then, she asked herself, then the answer hit her. She had started the journey in the black boots on her feet, and she intended to finish the journey in them. Her fingers flew to her neck, they grasped the chain of the dragonfly necklace. Lisa had given it to her, anger flooded Tracy's chest. That woman had betrayed them, Tracy started tugging on it. Trying to get rid of all the awful memories it brought back up. Her fingers suddenly froze, it wasn't the necklaces fault that Lisa was a traitor. The necklace was helpful it kept Tracy in complete control of her powers. She needed to fell safe, even if it meant keeping her memories of Lisa. Tracy looked around her, they were still following the stream which had widened into a river. Beside her Alex was keeping in step with her, she reached for his hand and held onto it. At least that was one good thing that had been brought upon her in her new life. Tracy's skin tingled when she touched his, she wondered if he felt the same. Alex looked over at her and smiled, he squeezed her hand. They continued running hand in hand over the grassy planes and through the meadows. That night after covering what they thought was a safe distance they decided to rest, rest without being on the move in their dreams to. The ground was hard and the grass was prickly, but after non stop travel Tracy would have slept on a bed of nails. Fingers still intertwined with Alex's, Tracy closed her eyes and for the first time in her life, welcomed sleep.
