A quiet but persistent alarm woke Doll up as it chimed from her computer. It sat on the desk that replaced the bottom level of her bunk bed and was where she spend her time whenever she didn't want to disturb her mother.
So Doll quickly got up and climbed down the ladder of her bunk bed to turn off the alarm before it got any more annoying. Her black cat onezie making this endeavour slightly more difficult than it needed to be but the onesie was way to comfortable to not wear.
Once she had done that, using her controller since her keyboard and mouse were not plugged in at the moment. She could have a moment to collect herself, and to change out of her pajama's and into something more suitable for a deadly quest outside.
So she did just that, switching her outfit to a black singlet, some dark blue cargo pants and a pair of black fingerless gloves to hide her red hand lights. She also put on the red boots that she had taken off before she got into bed and placed her hardhat onto her mop of now messy waist length purple bangs.
All i got to do is sneak out past the WDF, find a power core and get back without dying. Should be... doable at most, she thought with a slight sense of unease as she changed. Doll had a bit of time to use but would rather not waste it, it was 1:55 AM now but time could slip through her grasp if she wasn't firmly counting every minute.
All that lit the room was the red LED's she had decorated it with and her own visor's light. Their was the option to flick the ceiling light switch but she worked well in the dim light and she wouldn't be staying long anyway since she had limited time before her mother woke up.
Doll now grabbed her white waist bag off of the desk along with her Pulse Crossbow, almost bumping her old electric guitar in the process before leaving the room quietly. The bag contained a few bolts for the crossbow and her phone and was the brightest thing she ever wore, it was also the only waist bag she had so it would have to do.
The rest of the house was dead silent, nothing moved. The house was almost silent actually, with every other room empty except for the lounge room. That which was decorated with a collection of thin carpets strewn across the floor and the large flat screen TV. The TV was playing that old screen saver with the neon city on it and Doll's mum Yeva was asleep on the couch, her signature camo decorated flask of water on the small table next to her as she snored softly.
Doll left her be, after all she couldn't risk this all on helping her mum when she was doing what she normally did, that being sleep. The red eyed drone resumed what she was doing and left the house, sparing one last look back at Yeva and another at the chained up door to Yeva's actual bedroom before she left.
She quickly crossed through the the colony's many steel hallways until she arrived at the WDF headquarters'. She needed a key card to open the four blast doors that blocked the way out so that's why she was heading there first.
The main thing that surprised Doll was the fact that the door had been left open, a sticky note on the side exclaiming in bright blue text.
"Leave Door open until Janitor Bot 2050 is finished, he should be done by midnight."
Evidently this Janitor bot 2050 had apparently ignored the note and left after he was done, leaving the door open and providing her an easier entry than what she had thought.
Doll slinked into the multi-roomed office, the empty metal halls lit by a few dim white lights on the ceiling and a few small office desks were scattered throughout the centre room. Next to the slide up metal door that provided access into the office was a coat hanger with a few coats on it, a black brimmed cap adorned the top of the coat hanger. It sat their and emanated an immense sense of pride. The other room doorways lead to a bathroom, useless for drones and a file's room which housed a wall full of filing cabinets.
She swiftly ransacked the place, leaving her crossbow on one of the table's so she could actually use both hands instead of carrying the weapon around like she had been. Doll severely regretted the lack of a back sling for it, not like their were any designed for a drone. The crossbow itself was one of the few that were built for worker drones and yet they couldn't make a sling for it, stupid humans.
Doll looked through the kitchen area of the office and then rummaged across each of the desks, completely missing where the key cards were hung up. Doll brought up her internal clock to check if she had already butchered this whole plan before it even began, 2:20 AM it stated back in neon red and big square text.
Plenty of time, time in which she had revealed somethings of interest on the work desk of one Sarah Day. The desk itself was neatly organized and adorned with a few origami swans and photo of her family, the three of them all looked happy. The photo was dated a few years back from now, the frame was put on wonky and hid part of the faded image.
The main thing was a detailed plan to revive the long dead security camera system, writings of where the wire systems for them ran and a short list of candidates for camera watch duty.
This was actually a lucky find for her, as it proved that if she had procrastinated on this plan for another few weeks she might of never even had a chance like she did now. Said chance running lower as the night ticked on. Doll did have a small part of her that felt bad for snooping through all this but she pushed it out of the way.
Doll continued her search for another five minutes, slowly getting more and more annoyed until she checked behind the coat hanger at the doorway and almost screamed. The key cards were neatly hung up on little hooks on the wall here, two out of the seven were missing but their was still enough for her to take one.
Take one she did before grabbing the Pulse Crossbow and leaving the room in a hurry, sliding the floppy disk looking key card into her cargo pants pocket as she did. Furious at herself for missing such an obvious placement for the key cards when she had first entered the room and wasting a fair chunk of time.
The metal halls were still silent as she headed ever closer towards the main exit doors of the colony, the thought of using the evacuation door at the back of the colony crossed her mind. Nah, she would waste more time that way.
By 2:40 AM Doll had finally reached the blast doors, the huge metal bulwarks sturdily blocking her advance to the outside world. The closer she had got to the outside the colder it seemed to get, with a series of icicles permeating frost down from the metal ceiling on which they resided. This was not the same with the rest of the colony for the rest of the colony was free of dangerous icicles.
Doll then proceeded to the key card scanner that sat on the wall next to the door and well, scanned her key card on it. The reader's screen flashed yellow once before the blast door pulled itself into the ceiling without a sound.
Five WDF members sat around a table at the other side of the door, all of them except for one were immensely focused on the game of Mahjong that they were playing.
The one drone that wasn't playing now looked over at Doll, the rest too engrossed with the game of plastic tiles to even notice her appearance.
"Hey. Whatcha doing up this late missy?" the green eyed and moustached WDF worker asked her politely from his spot on the only plastic chair. He wore a simple plain black jumper and a pair of brown boots, as well as his light blue and faded hardhat. On the jumper was a pin with his name on it, Markov.
Honestly, Doll should of expected that their would be WDF members out here at this time. That was a problem for the past, the problem for now was what the hell to do. Doll didn't really want to have to waste another thirty minutes crossing the entire colony against so she could sneak out the emergency exit.
As she quickly scanned over the other similarly dressed drones, noting their name pins she got a feel for the group. They all looked kind of tired.
The first two members. Braxton and Todd looked pretty similar to Markov with what they were wearing, only difference was the colours. Braxton having a faded yellow hardhat and purple eyes while Todd wore a completely black jumper and a pair of sunglasses.
The third member. Alyssa also looked similar to the other WDF workers, probably a near standardised uniform or something like that Doll thought as she scanned the coy looking mah-jong master.
The girl had a pair of radiant green eyes that poked out from under her neatly parted to the right blonde hair. The back of said hair was left to sway and reached down to just about halfway down her upper half. The last WDF member was missing his pin and thus will not be described.
After Doll got a good look of everyone she realised with a small jolt that Markov was still waiting for an answer. Fortunately something came to her mind, the WDF were mostly known for not take their jobs seriously so perhaps she could use that to her advantage. She would just lie to them, a believable lie hopefully.
"Umm... l, was wondering if I could go outside... To do a check on all the door's external mechanisms..." Doll hid her awkwardness as she spoke, they wouldn't let her out. No way in hell that they would she thought.
She clearly overestimated the commitment of the WDF.
"Yeah why not, that would be really nice of you." Markov smiled warmly as he stated this, unaware of just how much trouble he would get in from his boss for doing this.
Doll shifted her grip on the pulse crossbow as she sidled past the wooden table that sat in front of the last door out. On the table was a half finished game of mah-jong, the four other workers all leaning in on their wooden chairs as if this was the most intense gameplay ever seen. Doll swiped the key card across the key car reader and the door opened.
The air was silent, unlike Markov. He called out a final goodbye to her before the door closed again.
"Hey wait, who was that you just let out?" Alyssa asked from her seat, a minute or two after Doll had left.
"I don't know her name. Why?" Markov answered back, he was slightly confused now.
"Can you... Describe her to me?" The green eyed mah-jong master seemed to be getting a little worried about this.
