Laying in the tall grass and resting your eyes was one of the most relaxing things you could do in the world you lived in now. Sometimes you couldn't even do that.
As soon as you got to the Deadheads, you plopped down in the grass and let it blow freely around you. Though soon your relaxation was interrupted when you spotted a figure by the closest door. Lying on the floor and panting. You tried getting a closer look, and carefully stepped forward. Inching your way towards the figure, soon recognized it to be Newt.
You sighed with relief, jogging over and kneeling down next to him. His hair stick to his forehead and his skin was glistening with sweat.
"Ew," Was all you said, earning a smile from the boy. His chest rhythmically going up and down. "You look disgusting,"
"I've gotta get used to running like that again. It was a pain in the ass to get used to the first time we were here," Newt replied flatly.
"I could imagine," You laid down next to him, arms resting on your stomach. "I'm getting tired just looking at you,"
Newt raised an eyebrow. "Do you want to try?"
"Oh, shuck no. I do not run voluntarily,"
"No one wants to be a runner. Especially not now."
You nodded. The two of you stayed quiet for a moment, letting Newt catch his breath before asking another question.
"Did you find anything?" You asked, turning your head to look at the blonde.
The look on his face gave you your answer. His face fell almost immediately after you finished the last word.
"We'll find something eventually," You said sitting up and pushing yourself into a standing position. You held out a hand to help him up. He took it and stood, standing there for a second before he remembered he was holding your hand. Honestly, you didn't want him to let go.
"(Y/N)! Newt!" You heard Thomas call you. You turned and saw him waving you over. "Minho found something!"
It took you a second to process what he said. But when it did sink in, your eyes widened so big the could've been compared to softballs. You took off running straight for Thomas. You heard Newt behind you, mumbling to himself. As soon as you reached Thomas, you wrapped your fingers around his biceps and pulled him down to your height.
"If you're joking, I will kick your ass so hard your grandchildren's grandchildren will feel it," You threatened him. He didn't even look fazed, but he had a look in his eyes telling you he wasn't joking. "Good," You said releasing him from your grip.
"What did Minho find?" Newt asked, ignoring the whole threatening thing just seconds before.
"I don't know, but he said he found something,"
You all exchanged a look, telling each other silently to kick his ass if he's lying.
Thomas started jogging in the opposite direction he came from, you and Newt trailing behind him. Thomas ran at a slower pace, you figured from the exhaustion of running the Maze. He lead the two of you to the building with a metal door. You remembered it from when Minho went missing after Thomas and Newt's big reveal.
"How is this place still holding together?" Newt asked, studying the large door.
"The world may never know," Chuck said peeking his head out of the doorway. "C'mon!" He waved at the three of you signaling you to follow him.
The four of you carefully walked down the steep steps, making sure to watch your head for different objects penetrating the your walking space. You almost hit into a loose plank hanging from above you because you were convinced you felt something touch your foot. You would of been hit in the head unless Newt hadn't warned you about it and pushed it out of the way.
"Wait," You heard Gally's voice ring out amongst other conversations that stopped abruptly from how loud he spoke. "But what about the Griever problem? Isn't there something off with the Grievers?"
"You mean how they're infected with the Flare?" You asked, entering the room.
"Yeah. That. That's the main problem. How are we gonna get out there if they have Cranks and Flare infected Grievers out there roaming freely?"
"Actually, they're hidden away in the back of the sections during the day and released at night. So we'll have to go during the day." Minho stated, bluntly.
"How'd he figure that out within, like, three days of running?" You mumbled.
"So they haven't changed some things from last time," Winston broke in.
"No. Not completely,"
River ran over to you and leant on your legs, using you as a support. You played with her pigtails, twisting them between your fingers.
"So we know what to do for some things," Thomas said, "But what about the rest? Like the Cranks?" He threw a quick glance over at Newt. Maybe for reassurance or maybe making sure he didn't hit a sore spot. You didn't know. But Newt seemed unfazed and didn't notice. He was too busy looking at the sketch Minho made of whatever he found.
Out of the corner of your eye, you saw something flash red. You looked over, not seeing anything at first. But soon enough, tucked away carefully placed so it couldn't be spotted easily, was a metal object with W.C.K.D painted in green letters across its back. You leant closer to Frypan, who was standing next to you.
"Do you see it?" You asked him, keeping your eye fixated on the object.
"See what?" He whispered back, sending you a strange look.
You used your chin to point where you were looking. Fry followed your gaze and his eyes widened at the sight of the object.
"And to think they didn't change that out of all things," He said under his breath.
"What is it?"
"A Beetle Blade. W.C.K.D used - or uses - them to keep an eye on us. They never hurt anybody, but I get the feeling its not here to just watch us," Gally told you in a hushed voice. You nodded in agreement.
"(Y/N), I'm tired," River said through a yawn. You smiled looking down at her. She had her hands up and used those grabby hand motions kids do. You knelt down and let her climb on your back and wrap her arms around your neck.

Minho ended up finding a glowing crack in the wall. Or that's what he said it was. You believed him, but you knew you had to keep an eye out for more. Because the fact was, you only had five days left to search for a way out or W.C.K.D would kill all of you. Whether it be with Cranks, Grievers, or guns. They wanted all of you dead and they'd have it one way or another. And you wouldn't allow them to touch anyone here. You had grown close to them and they were practically your family, even if most of them don't remember. You would protect them even if your life was at stake. You'd rather it be you then them, and you knew the feeling was neutral in everyone's point of view. You wouldn't let them have that satisfaction of seeing one of you die in front of them and the rest of your spirits crumble.
No, I wont allow anyone to touch them, You thought as your grip on River's thighs tightened. The meeting thing lasted later then anyone expected and now you, Newt, Thomas, Gally, and Chuck were heading back to the Homestead to call it a night while Alby, Winston, Fry, and Minho cleaned up. River had already beaten all of you to it and was asleep, her handmade doll tucked between her chest and your back. She had her head resting on your shoulder and low snores filled your hearing until Newt ran up next to you and started talking.
"Do you want me to carry her?" The blonde asked. You hadn't heard a better idea in at least. . . well. . . since you got here. Your back was aching. You gladly nodded and shifted River on your back so it would be easier for Newt to grab her. He rested her on his hip and placed her doll by her stomach. The four-year-olds head lolled onto his shoulder.
You smiled lightly and giggled.
"What?" Newt asked, smiling as well.
"Nothing," You said. Newt raised an eyebrow at you, knowing that wasn't the case. You sighed and added, "I just thought about how you actually act like a mother," You said picking up the pace a little so you were out of his reach incase he had gotten the reference.
"What?" He asked again, seemingly not getting your joke. You giggled again and you were joined by Thomas and Minho, who actually got your joke.
"Mama Newt," The two said in unison and took off running with you as realization hit Newt and his face broke out in a evil grin.
"Oh," Newt said under his breath and sighed. "I'll get them later,"
