"Babe, we really need to go, are you nearly ready?"
"Yeah, just a minute," I shout from our bedroom. When I walk down the stairs, I see his dark hair styled neatly. His tall, at least six foot, frame stood in front of me. Blue eyes gazing down into mine. George Blake. My high school sweeheart. I give him a quick peck on the cheek and grab my purse. He takes the keys from his pocket and hangs his arm loosely around my waist as he locks up and walks me to the car. We're going to some family dinner. Some of his family that is. Seeing as Granny died - of heartache we suspect - a couple years after Grampy died, and Mom and Dad divorced not long after we got back to London from the visit to California. That visit back home, where I met Robert. I always wondered how he was doing. Over the past six years, I've seen a load in the papers about new movies and other interesting gossip about my old friend. He was my first love, I suppose; although he didn't love me back... He might have even forgot about me. I never did hear from him again. Not once. I heard he's married now, to Susan Levin. I'm glad he finally settled down. When I got back to England, all George did was fuss over me. It took time, but I fell for him. And I can openly confess that I love him.
Dinner seems to last forever. It's not until his Mom addresses me that I snap out of my daze. "So, Freya, just how long shall I prepare to wait for some Grandkids, huh?" she asks with a laugh. George blushed and told his mother in a polite way to back down a little.
"We aren't really thinking of children at the moment," I tell her truthfully.
"So, how long is George going to wait to pop the question?"
"Mum, please!" His face turns a bright red. I only laugh it off. I've never really considered marriage. I mean, we've been together nine years, but it was never really a thing we talked about. Honestly, I think I'd love it, having a flashy engagement ring to show off to all the girls. Telling them about the proposal and seeing them swoon at the thought of George down on one knee. I smile at the thought.
The restaurant is very nice, a touch of elegance yet reasonably priced. There's a large, black piano in the center of the nicely decorated restaurant, obviously the main focus of the room. It looks classy, obviously used for live performances.
"Babe, you want to order dessert?" George asks, with a strong London accent.
"Um, no I think I've had enough food. I feel so full it hurts."
"You sure? I'm having an apple crumble..."
"Yeah, I'm good thanks."
A half hour later, a performance begins. Someone introduces the performer, but it's a stagename I don't recognise. It's a familiar song, but I'm not really paying attention, so I can't recall where I heard it. It's not until I hear:
"It's funny now when I don't show up on Monday,
They'll go nuts and eat
Their hats, well what d'ya think of that,"
That I recognise it.
*Flashback*
"I think that'd be very silly," I mumble in a croaky morning voice. He turns from the stove and looks at me with a perfect smile on his face.
"Morning sleepy head, how long have you been standing there exactly?" he asks with a smirk.
"Long enough to discover that your voice isn't half bad. What song is that?" I ask as I take a seat at the table.
"Why thank you," he says with a wink. "I wrote it myself, for a movie that's due to come out next year. It's called Man Like Me."
*Flashback Ends*
Robert. I turn and glance over my shoulder to see him staring at me with a huge smile on his face. I can't believe it, he's here. Now. In London.
"Babe," I turn to George, "I just spotted an old friend, I'm gonna go talk, okay?"
"Yeah sure, babe." He's too engrossed with a conversation between his Mom and sister to notice.
I immediately rise from my chair and make my way over to the cheeky man still occupying the piano bench. He rises to greet me with a warm hug. We don't plan on letting each other go, but eventually realize we have to.
"Hello there, stranger!" he said, a beaming smile overtaking his face completely.
"Long time no see, Robbie! Oh my God! I can't believe you're here!"
"I was eating here with a few colleagues and heard what I thought to be your laughter. I thought I was going crazy! Ten minutes later, I turn around to take a look and there you are! I couldn't think of a better way to get noticed by you than to sing our song!"
"Aw Robbie. It was perfect!"
"I thought you weren't gonna realize! I got slightly worried..."
"Of course I would, Robbie! Never mind that, what the hell are you doing here?"
"Nice to see you too, my dear!" he says sarcastically with a laugh. Calling me "my dear", it makes me teleport back to the past when we'd spend day and night texting the strangest of things.
"Oh, you know what I mean! Here, in London!"
"I'm actually here filming," he says smiling away.
"Ah, what's the movie called?"
"Now that would ruin the surprise wouldn't it." I roll my eyes and smile a little. We're both laughing until a woman turns up, taking Robbie's arm and tangling it with her own.
"Hey Rob, I was starting to wonder where you'd got to!"
"I was just catching up with an old friend," he winked at me, but I couldn't blush. Not now. "It's been a while since we saw each other."
"Well aren't you going to introduce us?" she asked, although I'm almost certain I know who she is. Of course it's Susan, her beautiful face is easily recognisable from seeing it in so many magazines and newspapers.
"Of course! Susan, this is Freya. Freya, this is my wife, Susan."
"It's a pleasure to finally meet you! It's been years since I saw Robert in person, it's so lovely to meet the person who puts the smile on that face of his," I say, prodding Robert in the chin with my index finger. He scrunches up his nose and puts an arm around Susan's waist.
"It's lovely to meet you Freya, although Robert hasn't told me much about you..." she says, frowning slightly and looking at Robbie, as though suggesting it as a question.
"We met back in California, had a right blast over the week or so that I got to know her," he smiled at me, a sparkle in his eyes, "but then she was wisped away back to London. Family troubles." The smile faded slightly, and became slightly fake. We both know that's not the full truth... but it'll do. Susan smiled at us both, a slight confusion in her expression.
"Back to London? You're English? But your accent?" she asks, obviously a little puzzled.
"Oh, I'm from California, but we moved to London for my Dad's job. Then when my Grandfather got sick, we all went out to visit him, that's where I met Robert. It's actually quite a funny story..."
"I basically wiped her out, collided with her so she fell and bumped her head on the floor. To make it up to her, I invited her to the Zodiac premiere. Those were good times..." Robert added, that glimmer in his eye again.
"Rob, you monster! The poor girl hurt herself because of you? I hope you took care of her!"
"Of course I did Susie. You know me."
We all had a short catch up conversation, and Robbie took me to his table to say hi to a few other colleagues that were there. They were all nice enough.
I told Robert I had to get back to my table, and he understood. He wrote his number down on a napkin and told me to call him when I was free so we could catch up properly. This whole thing was surreal. I can't believe Robbie has happily waltzed back into my life, and damn did he look good for mid-forties. Damn Freya, you've got George. Stop thinking of Robert's lips. Damn you made it worse. Oh. Shit.
What on earth has he done to me?
Hey Guys!
What do you think so far? I haven't heard many opinions yet, so be sure to get commenting! I wanna know what you guys think and how I can improve:) I included Robert's song "Man Like Me" at the start of this chapter, it's the second time in the book but I thought, heck, why not. It's my favourite song of Robert's so I thought I'd make use of it. Well that's about all I have to say for now; but seriously, I wanna know what you all think. Also, let me know what ideas you have about what's to come, not only am I intrigued, but I may use them in future! Don't worry, I'll leave you a little dedication! :)
