At Saint-Jacques Public Elementary School, in Ms. Myers' class, Ms. Myers got through with attendance in her class, she put the sheet aside and she'll take it to the principal's office later on, and she walked to the front of the class and faced everyone.
Ms. Myers: Okay, now that everyone's here. Let's get started on learning, shall we? *Everyone said yes to Ms. Myers. * Good. You all have done with your cursive writing skill, I know cursive writing can be difficult to do by your certain age, but don't worry. This is only the beginning, because I thought about setting up a little writing assignment for you all. Try to guess what it is.
Peyton: Are we writing a story?
Ms. Myers: Yes, Peyton. We will be writing a story. *A few students exclaimed and smiled about that. * Now before I tell you all what you are writing your story on, I want to show you all the types of stories people write whether online, books, or newspapers that you see your parents read. *She goes to the computer, plug the cord to the projector, and she closes the window blinds. * Can someone get the lights?
Ivan: (raised his hand) I'll do it.
Ms. Myers: Thank you, Ivan. *Ivan walked to the light switch, flipped the switch off, and he sits back down in his seat. * There are many types of stories, including those based on plot, genre, and style. The first thing is Plot. Plot is some common plot types include "rags to riches", "overcoming the monster", "the quest", "voyage/journey and return", "rebirth", "tragedy", and "comedy". In "rags to riches" stories, the main character starts out in a low position and undergoes a significant change, often involving power, status, or wealth. Sometimes some stories have a plot twist, something unexpected when you at least expect it. *Some students oohed at that. * Cinderella, Slumdog Millionaire, and The Pursuit of Happiness are all examples of this plot type.
Leah: I know what story I'm gonna write.
Maddie: Same.
Ms. Myers: Next is Genre. Genre is stories can also be categorized by genre, such as fiction, nonfiction, drama, or poetry. Fiction subgenres include historical fiction, science fiction, fantasy, and realistic fiction. Nonfiction subgenres include autobiography, biography, informational writing, and persuasive writing. Drama can include comedies and tragedies.
Ivan: (raised his hand) What kind of plot twist, Ms. Myers?
Ms.Myers: The king died and the queen died of grief. 'The king died, and then the queen died of grief' is a plot. The time sequence is preserved, but the sense of causality overshadows it.
Ivan: Oh.
Ms. Myers: Finally is style. Style is stories that can also be categorized by style, such as short stories, novellas, and epics.
Melanie: (raised her hand) What's the difference?
Ms. Myers: Short stories are fictional literary compositions that can be written in prose or poetry and are shorter than a novel. Novellas are fictional prose narratives that are relatively long and can have a complex plot or pattern of events. Epics are long narrative poems that are written in a dignified style and are about the deeds of a traditional or historical hero.
Howie: Wow.
Chris: (to Timmy, Ella, and Etta) This could be fun.
Ms. Myers: Ivan, could you get the lights?
Ivan: Okay. *He stands up, turns the lights back on, Ms. Myers turns the projector off, and he opens the blinds. *
Ms. Myers: So, you all want to write your own story? *Everyone answered yes to Ms. Myers. * Okay. I would like a volunteer to pass out a sheet of paper.
Chris: (raised his hand) I'll do it.
Ms. Myers: Thank you, Chris. *Chris stands up, takes the stacks of papers, and passed them out to everyone in the class. * Now, I want you all to write a story of your own. It must include these three things we talked about: a Plot, Genre, and Style. Then maybe later on, you can read your story to the whole class. Is that fun? *Everyone answered yes to Ms. Myers. * Good. You may begin writing. *Everyone gets a pencil and starts writing their stories on their paper. In the bakery, Shang helped decorate a few cookies and Tom pulled out a few fresh baked pies. *
Tom: These pies are done and they smell good.
Shang: Once they're cool, they can be put in display?
Tom: Yep. *Up front by the counter, Melanie counted the boxes before leaving for a delivery run. *
Melanie: Okay, think that's the three orders.
Mulan: Yep. You're good to go.
Melanie: Thank you, Mulan. I'll be right back. *She carried three boxes and leave the bakery to the car. * Okay, let's see what we can do here. *She took her car keys out, unlocked the front door, put the boxes in the front passenger seat, closed the door, and buckle her seatbelts. * Okay, so the first stop is at Claude Monet High School. *She start driving to Claude Monet High School. *
At College Francoise DuPont, in Ms. Trussel's class, Ms. Trussel teach more on percent of a number.
Ms. Trussel: A percentage is a number or ratio that is expressed as a fraction of 100, or "part per hundred". The word "percent" comes from the Latin phrase per centum, which means "by the hundred" or "per one hundred". To represent a number as a percentage, you can write the numerical value followed by the percent symbol (%). For example, 75% is written as 75%.
Alya: Huh.
Marinette: Think this will be useful?
Alya: Hopefully.
Ms. Trussel: I'm gonna teach you how it's done. *She picked up a chalk and start writing on the board while she talk. * To calculate the percentage of a number, you can divide the number by the whole and then multiply by 100. For example, if you got 75 questions right out of 100 on a test, you would have scored 75%. Percentages can also be expressed as decimals or fractions. For example, 25% is equal to the fraction 25/100 or 0.4 in decimal form. Do we all understand that? *Some people answered yes to Ms. Trussel. * Good to hear. I want to push the test to next Friday. *Nicole raised her hand. * Yes, Nicole?
Nicole: Why are you pushing the test to next Friday?
Ms. Trussel: Because I want you all to see if you have a better understanding to what I'm teaching you. Since we will be working on two topics: percent of a number and fractions. More like, Turing fractions into mixed numbers, which should be easy for you all to do. Have you guys done turning fractions into decimals last year with your algebra teacher? *Some answered yes to Ms. Trussel. * Okay, good to know. Now where was I? Oh yes, here. Percentages can be used to compare quantities that are awkward fractions. For example, you might want to compare the percentage of students at two schools who voted to abolish holidays. By translating the fractions into percentages, you can easily see that a higher proportion of students at one school are against the idea than at the other. I'm gonna show you all an example on percent of a number, now this requires a calculator. So get one out if you have one, not your phone.
Chloe: (rolling her eyes) Typical. *She opened her school bag and pulled out her gold calculator. *
Janelle: Is that a solid gold calculator?
Chloe: Of course. My daddy gave it to me since he did my back to school shopping. Jealous much?
Janelle: Nope. I got something much better. *She pulled out her Diamond encrusted calculator. * A Diamond encrusted calculator. *
Chloe: How did you...
Janelle: A present from my grandmother. Ported from overseas. Jealous.
Chloe: No. 'Yes. I should've told daddy to give me the diamond instead of gold. Ugh!'
Ms. Trussel: Now, before is how you all an example on how it's done, I'll have to tell you the steps to a percent of a number. So, get out your notebook and pencil. You'll be taking notes on this lesson. *Everyone did what Ms. Trussel said and she writes down the steps. * To calculate the percentage of a number, you can follow these steps: Determine the numbers: Identify the two numbers involved in the calculation. Divide: Divide the number you want to express as a percentage by the other number. You can use a calculator for this step. And Multiply: Multiply the result by 100. The formula for calculating percentage is (value/total value)×100%. Sounds about right. I'm gonna show you an example on how to do it, then afterward we can do a few practice problems. *She writes an example on the board. Juleka pulled out her purple calculator she got from her birthday. *
Rose: Your calculator looks cool.
Juleka: Thanks.
Ms. Trussel: Example 1: What is 16% of 35? What I'm about to show you all what you have to do on this one. So, 16% is what we're trying to do. So, first thing is we identify the numbers we involved for calculating. So what can we see? *Oliver raised his hand. * Oliver?
Oliver: The 16% and 35.
Ms. Trussel: Okay, you're right. So we're seeing 16 and 35. Next is divide. We divide 16 and 100, which will give us what? Put it in your calculator. *They put the number in their calculators. *
Alya: It's 0.16.
Ms. Trussel: Yes, Alya. Next is multiply the 0.16 and 35, but there's a twist. Instead of multiplying 0.16, we multiply 16. So who got the answer to that?
Max: (raised his hand) I got it, Ms. Trussel. It's 560.
Ms. Trussel: You're right, Max. But before we confirm it. We need to move the decimals to two spaces. So now it's 5.6. That's your answer. *She circles the answer. * Do you all get it? *Some answered yes to Ms. Trussel. * Okay, I'm hearing some yeses and nos. Okay, no fret. We can work on another example. *She writes another problem on the board. * 24 is 96% of what number? Who can tell me what to do first? *Alya raised her hand. * Alya?
Alya: You divide 96 to 100.
Ms. Trussel: Yes. Divide 96 to 100, that'll get me 0.96. What's next? *Delmar raised his hand. * Delmar?
Delmar: Times 96 and 24, it will get you... *He put in the math in his calculator. * 2,304.
Ms. Trussel: You're correct, Delmar. But we need to what?
Delmar: Move to two places.
Ms. Trussel: You are correct. We move to two spaces, and that gives us 23.04 as our answer. *She circles the answer. * Do you all understand it now? *They all answered yes to her. * Good. Now I have an assignment for you all to do. You can either work by yourself or with a partner, but show your work so you can get credit. Would someone pass out the assignment?
Adrien: I'll do it.
Ms. Trussel: Thank you, Adrien. *She handed Adrien the stacks of paper and he passed them out to everyone. On the streets, Melanie stopped at the Claude Monet high school. *
Melanie: Okay. So, the first order is in Claude Monet high school. *She takes the top box, gets out of the car, and walked into the school building. *
School principal: Hello, how can I help you?
Melanie: I got a cake order for a birthday party.
School principal: Oh yes, it's for Mr. Rockford. He's 75 years old.
Melanie: Wow.
School principal: Yeah. This year he'll retire. So if we're in need of a retirement cake, we'll call and let you know.
Melanie: I'll make a note of it.
School principal: (taking the box from Melanie) I'll take the cake and put it in the teacher's lounge.
Melanie: Okay.
School principal: (holding out a 20-euro bill) Here you go.
Melanie: (taking the money) Thank you. *She walked out of the school and headed back to the car. * Next is at an Account company. *She buckled her seatbelt, start the engine, and drives off to the Accountant company. * This is just a 10 minute drive. *She keeps driving to the building. *
At the bakery, Mulan closed up a box and place it on the counter.
Mulan: Here you go, ma'am fresh blondies.
Female customer: (taking the box) Thank you. My book club members will love these blondies. One of my friends has an uncontrollable sweet tooth.
Mulan: I hope she enjoys them.
Female customer: Oh she will. Thank you. *She leaves the bakery with the blondies. Then, the door opened and another customer walked inside the bakery. *
Mulan: Hello.
Mushu: (waving) Hello.
Mulan: Welcome to Tom and Sabine Boulangerie Patisserie, how can we help you, sir?
Male customer: Hmm... I'll have a small slice of cake, please?
Mulan: Of course. What flavor cake?
Male customer: A German chocolate cake is good for me.
Mulan: (putting in the total) That'll be 1-euro. Would you like to pay with cash or card?
Male customer: (reaching into his wallet) I'll pay with cash, if that's okay.
Mulan: Yes it is. *He pulled out a 1-euro bill, handed it Mulan, she opened the register, and put the money inside. * I'll have your cake out and ready to go.
Male customer: Okay. *She gets a cake cutter knife, Mushu assembled a small box, she go to the cake display case, and cut a slice of the German chocolate cake. *
Mulan: (carefully lift the slice up) Okay, ready Mushu?
Mushu: Got the box.
Mulan: Okay. *She puts the slice in the box and Mushu closed it up. *
Mushu: It's in.
Mulan: Good. *He put the box on the counter and Mulan came back. * Here's your cake, sir.
Male customer: (taking the box) Thank you. *He leaves the bakery with his cake. *
Shang: Mulan, we got pies out.
Mulan: I can help put them up.
Shang: Thank you. *They put the pies in the pie case. * Thank you.
Mulan: You're welcome.
Tom: Shang, mind helping me flatten the cookie dough? I got some cookie cutters in the back to get.
Shang: Okay. *He walked back to the kitchen and help flatten the cookie dough, Mulan stand by the counter, and wait to see more customers coming in. At the Saint-Jacques Public Elementary school, in Ms. Myers' class, the students were writing their stories. *
Ms. Myers: Okay, everyone. Pencils down, please? *They all put their pencils down and look at Ms. Myers. * It's time to hear your stories. Who would like to go first? How about you, Erika?
Erika: Okay. *She stand up from her seat and stand at the front of the class. * My story is called: a Lonely Dinosaur. There was a Dinosaur name Molly, she's a long neck Brachiosaurus. She was the tallest dinosaur in the world, but today... Molly felt sad. She was all alone and with no one to play with because she's different than all the rest of the Dinosaurs. She asked the ones down on the ground, "Can I play with you?" "No, you're too tall." Answered one of the T-Rexes. Molly looked sad, so she looked up at the sky and see a flock of Pterodactyls in the air. "Can I play with you guys?" She asked them, the Pterodactyls hovered in the air. "You're tall, but can you fly?" Asked one of the Pterodactyls. "No, I can't." She answered. "Then no, you can't play with us." The flock of Pterodactyls flew away, Molly was all alone and sad that no one wants to play with her because she's too tall. Then from afar, she spotted a few long-necked dinosaurs who are also Brachiosauruses. "They seem friendly." Her thoughts said and she walked up towards them, munching on the leaves off a tree. "Hello." She said and the Brachiosauruses turned and saw Molly. "Hi. What's your name?" Asked one of the Brachiosauruses name Todd. "Molly. Will you play with me?" She asked them, hoping they'll say yes. "Sure." Answered Todd, Molly paused at what just happened, she couldn't believe what she just heard. They were happy she wants to play with her. So Molly happily played with the other Brachiosauruses all day, feeling not alone anymore. The end. *Everyone clapped for Erika's story. *
Ms. Myers: That's a
