Chapter Five – Pack
The door slammed behind me as I skidded on the wooden floor of the Alpha of Hampshire's hallway. As I came to a stop, I turned to see Beta Ryan Rickman moving from the front door to the front window. Panting, I waited tense until he gave a nod of clearance, only then did I let loose the breath in my throat. The distraction of the Omega who lived with this pack had worked extremely well. And since Hampshire was covered in magic of all kinds of beings, I worked out that I might actually be able to stay for a night, maybe two if I really wanted to push it.
"How are you, gorgeous?" Ryan said, coming over to me with a flirty smile on his lips. Nothing would ever happen between us. And we'd known that before I'd found my mate. We'd always had a silent but certain rule that nothing beyond flirty exchanges, and playfulness would ever happen between us.
Shifting back to my human form, Ryan was already moving to take his shirt off, revealing a toned body. Sliding his red shirt over my head, I checked my best friend over. Because he was short at five-four, short for someone of his rank, he'd decided that what he lacked in height, he had his muscle. And damn did he ever. There wasn't an ounce of fat of the guy before me, his stomach rippled, his arms bulged, his thighs were like rocks. But then he hid all that strength under baggy jeans and a baggy shirt. You wouldn't know how he looked with clothes on. With clothes on, he looked like a college nerd with bark brown hair, normal brown eyes.
"I was fine 'til you took that shirt off," I grinned.
Ryan buffed his chest in pride all the while sending me a wink. But then the playfulness dropped like it had never been. "Heard you've found yourself an Omega mate?"
I sent a glare at the door I'd run through like a god damn coward. I was glad that it had been Ryan and not his Alpha waiting for me on this side of the door. "Who knows?"
Ryan's lips twitched in amusement. "You've made headline news on SPNLTs."
I felt my eyes widen at that. SPNLTs was the shortened version of Supernatural Times. It was an online newspaper where you needed a password to read the articles. It wouldn't do us any good if a human just suddenly stumbled upon it and started telling all his friends about it.
"What!"
"ALPHA RUNNING FROM HER OMEGA MATE!" Ryan quoted in a voice that people used in a stadium, when voicing the opposition.
I stared at him. Unable to close my jaw that had dropped open. It dropped further when Ryan continued.
"They even managed to hack the CCTV at the station in London and get you changing into a pink jacket – which, might I add, you looked pretty hot in–" I glared at him. "–Anyway, it basically says how the Great Alpha Warrior against the Omega's, has finally met her match, and because you have, you ran scared."
"That's not true!" I said defiantly. I sighed at Ryan's look. "Okay, half true. But I was heading to see my mother about my side that she won't tell me what is."
"She still hasn't told you?"
I shook my head. "My mate knows what she is, what I'm half of. I think the only way I'm ever going to find out what I am is going to be through him."
Ryan rolled his eyes, arms crossed over his chest. "And how are you going to ask if you keep running in the opposite direction?"
I growled. "I'm not running... I'm just avoiding him until I can agree with the fact that my mate is also my father's murderer."
"So you're running," Ryan concluded. Dropping his arms, he sighed. "Come on, I want you to meet someone."
"Who?"
"Tyler, the mate to the Omega in our pack."
"Why would I want to meet him?"
"Because he can tell you that being mated to an Omega isn't all that bad."
"Let me guess, he's a submissive wolf?"
Ryan said nothing.
"Ryan, Alpha's and Omega's don't go. We both want to rule. To dominate. To make the other submit more than just a dominant wolf. We can't work together. The only difference between Alpha's and Omega's is that Alpha's will do all they can to protect other's from harm while Omega's couldn't care less if everyone died around them."
"Just meet Tyler, if you don't think your talk has helped, then it hasn't, but at least you've had a true side of what it is to be mated to an Omega."
I snorted. "And what about my mate? Are you going to get him to meet an Alpha's mate?"
Ryan sent me a glare before he grinned. "I do that and you'll never see this sexy body again."
I blinked, faking shock. "Your sexy?"
Ryan appeared insulted. "Bitch."
"Woof."
Grinning at each other, we came to a halt in front of a door that looked just like any other. But I knew that this Tyler would be on the other side.
"Keep your phone on you, I'll text you if your mate gets too close."
I nodded in response. As Ryan walked away, I turned the handle of the door, pushing it as I did. I was confused on whether I truly wanted answers or not. Whether I wanted to know a submissive wolf's view on what it is to be the mate to an Omega. As I pushed the door open further, I allowed myself the truth. He was my mate, and even though he was an Omega that could choke me into passing out, kill my father, I had to remember that he'd also – kind of – protected me against the brown wolf when I'd been on the beach. He'd allowed me to move to protect myself. And he'd cooked me breakfast without poisoning it.
Stepping into the room, I cleared my mind to listen to what the submissive wolf had to say with as much of an open mind as I could. And who would have thought that a couple of hours could change everything. Only to be reverted by another's actions.
