The way upstairs was a blur. Probably because Kay didn't stop kissing Kyle for one second. She had no idea how he even knew where he was going, but one moment they were going up the stairs, then they were halfway along a hallway, and finally, inside a room, dropping on the bed.

And she couldn't be happier, because now his hands didn't have to focus on holding her up and could roam over her body. She fumbled with the buttons of his shirt, yearning to feel his skin. And she could finally run her hands across his chest, his abs, those delicious lines that disappeared in his jeans.

He started trailing kissed on her jaw, down her neck, on her exposed shoulder, his hands lifting her top, touching her stomach, her back. She shivered at the contact. She never thought simple touches could send her over the edge like that. He hadn't even touched any of the big stuff, and already she was shaking all over.

When he started kissing her stomach, she thought she'd completely lose it. She tried to push the shirt off his shoulders, but couldn't reach properly. Kyle's mouth moved back to hers, biting on her lower lip. A moan escaped her.

He groaned. "Don't do that."

"I can't help it." Her voice was low and breathy.

"Stop talking." He kissed her again, to make sure she'd listen.

Good, she didn't want to talk anyway. She wanted to get rid of that damn shirt. They twisted and she ended up in his lap and froze. It felt so good. She moved an inch and it felt even better as heat ran up her spine and to her head, making everything hazy. Another moan came out, but this time Kyle didn't tell her to stop. He wrapped his arms around her tightly as if to stop her from moving. It didn't work, she still could, and she did, enjoying the pressure, the tension in her body and his, the way it made her yearn for so much more.

"Kay, stop," he whispered in her ear.

The warmth sent shivers through her body. "Why? It feels so good."

"It feels too good. That's why you need to stop." He moaned when she moved again. It was the hottest sound she'd ever heard. "You told me you wanted to wait five dates before we go further. And if you keep grinding into me, that's going to hell fast." His voice was strained as if the words took all his concentration.

"I did?" She couldn't remember saying it, but now that the haze was lifted the tiniest bit, it did sound logical, like something she would say, like something they should do. Because as much as she wanted him, their relationship was much more than sex. And if they didn't stop now, that was obviously where they were heading. "Yeah, that sounds smart."

So she pulled back a little, to relieve the pressure. Her body screamed in protest, but the rest of her felt much better. Because she and Kyle weren't just physical. Sure, he had the hottest body on the planet and could probably bring her over the edge without taking her pants off, but she was in love with his soul, with everything he was.

He let out a deep breath and smiled at her. She loved the haze in his eyes, the way he looked at her, as if she were the only light in the darkness.

And her chest filled with so much love, she felt it would literally explode any second if she didn't let it out. She linked her hands around his neck.

"I love you, Kyle Grant. More than I've ever loved anyone or anything in my life."

"And I love you, Kay Dickens. For bringing out the best in me, for breaking the damn bottle and for being just so freaking perfect."

He was going to make her melt. Literally. "Perfect? You mentioned a lot of my defects outside."

He raised an eyebrow. "Who said they were defects? Eyes of the beholder, sweetheart."

"I love it when you call me sweetheart."

"Really? Because I was afraid it was pretty lame."

No, it wasn't. Not coming out of his mouth. She kissed him, softly, tenderly. And for a second it worked, he kissed her back the same way, carefully, as if he were afraid to break her. Then his arms tightened around her, he pulled her against him, and kissed the life out of her. Or actually kissed life into her.

She didn't mind, she was back in her favorite position and her head spun out of control. "Those five dates can all be in one day, right?" she breathed. Because, suddenly, her clothes burned her skin and she wanted them off.

"Can we fuck the five dates altogether?" he asked, nipping her neck.

"Yes, please." And she finally took that damn shirt off.

Kyle lay her back on the bed, continuing his trail of kisses from her belly button up. She lifted her top, struggling to take it off without making him take her mouth off her, because she didn't want that.

She wanted him to be right there, put more pressure on her, press against her harder. There was nothing she wanted more than to feel more of his skin against hers. But all in due time. For now, his kisses were like fire and the moment his fingers wrapped against the top of her jeans, she was sure she'd lose it.

"Hey, Kyle... What the fuck?"

It took Kay a moment to even process the words, but they had her pulling her top back down to cover her bra. This couldn't be happening.

She rose on her elbows and glared over Kyle's shoulder. Joey and Kelly were in the doorway, their eyes as wide as saucers.

Kyle glanced over his shoulders, not getting off her, protecting her from view. "What?"

"The performance," Joey stuttered. "We're already late."

"Oh, that."

Kyle threw her one look to make sure she was decent, then rolled off her, rummaged in the suitcase at the base of the bed and pulled a t-shirt on.

He then leaned over Kay and gave her a short, but deep kiss. "See you downstairs." And he was out the door, pulling Joey after him.

Kay sat up, looking after him longingly. But maybe it was better this way. Maybe they would get their five dates. Just five days. They were responsible adults, not horny teenagers, they could do it. Though, damn, she felt like a horny teenager.

"Um," Kelly said awkwardly. "Wanna talk about it?"

Kay let out a laugh. "Talk about what? I think you pretty much got the point."

"So, are you and Kyle together?" Kelly asked, her eyes shiny, hands clasped together in excitement.

"Definitely." She got off the bed and walked to the door, trying to look as dignified as Kyle did. She stopped in front of her friend, and couldn't keep an excited squeal in as everything that had happened in the last half an hour came rushing back. "He loves me, Kelly."

"And you're in love with him."

"Obviously." Kay threw her hands up and laughed. "It's amazing."

Kelly wrapped her in a tight hug. "I'm so happy for you. I've never seen you like this. You're glowing."

"I don't think I've ever been this happy."

Which was true. This was love like she'd always pictured it. All consuming, deep, intimate. The trust between them, the passion, how they only wanted to make the other happy... It was everything she'd ever wanted.

Kelly smiled at her, and Kay felt the need to scream, to laugh, to jump because it was amazing, overwhelming. And there was one thing that could make it even better: Kyle singing.

So they made their way downstairs and in front of the stage, to watch their boyfriends perform. And Kyle was on fire, making a real show of it, embellishing every song, his eyes never leaving Kay. She actually felt like climbing on stage and kissing him in front of everyone, just to show that this wonderful human being belonged to her.

After the performance, it was time to announce the prom king and queen. The boys joined them in the audience, Kyle slipping his arm around Kay's waist and pulling her against him. Yup, they were officially together and it felt amazing.

"Good luck," he called to Joey and Kelly.

"Do you think they'll win?" Kay whispered.

"Nope. My money's on Cecily and Malcom."

She disagreed. Cecily yes, Malcom no. And she was right. As the principal climbed on stage and the crowd settled down, he first announced the king. Kyle. She had no idea why he looked surprised. He was the lead of an extremely popular band and supposedly single. Of course everyone would vote for him. He did get on stage, a smile on his face and gracefully received the crown the principal handed him, but didn't put it on.

"And now for our queen," the principal drawled.

Kay clenched her fists. She didn't know why she was nervous because the result was obvious.

"Cecily Howard!"

Kay relaxed and watched Cecily climb on stage, a huge smile on her face. She stopped next to Kyle and looked up at him happily. And Kay strangely didn't mind. Because despite the fact that they'd broken up, they were the king and queen of school. And even if they'd been together, she wasn't jealous because Kyle had never been in love with Cecily. He'd never been in love with anyone but her. And it was enough.

"It was very close, you know."

Kay jumped and turned to Erin who'd appeared by her side. She wore a big puffy dress with a flower pattern and sort of looked like an old couch.

"And I mean really close. Between you and her." She turned to Kay, her brown eyes filled with hunger. "One vote apart. My vote."

"Um, okay." Kay didn't know how to feel about that. She'd never wanted to be prom queen.

"Because I like you, Kay, but Cecily's the queen and Kyle's her king."

Kay shrugged. Cecily might be the queen, but Kyle was anything but hers. Even Erin should know that.

Erin only grinned at her reaction and turned toward the stage. "Kiss!" she called out.

The crowd immediately picked up the chant and Kay turned to Erin, her fist clenched, arm raised and ready to strike because she did know how to feel about that. Furious. Someone reached out their hand in front of her and she raised her eyes to see Kyle smiling at her.

Forgetting all about Erin and her stupid chant, Kay took his hand and let him pull her on stage. Where he kissed her. In front of everybody. And the crowd went wild. Not that she could hear more than background noise, because his kiss drove everything out of her mind and plunged her into perfection.

He pulled away and put his crown on her head. "You get the message."

She nodded, tears filling her eyes. So did everyone else.

The party went on and Kay was soaring high above the clouds. She and Kyle had agreed to try dating at least once and agreed their first date would be the very next day. She couldn't wait.

Kelly and Joey had retreated to one of the rooms a while ago, so dawn found Kyle and Kay in the lounge on the second floor, on one of the couches, his head in her lap, watching the sun rising through a circular window.

"Best. Day. Ever," she said.

"By far. God, we've been stupid, but I strangely don't regret it." He looked up at her.

"Me neither. It wouldn't have been this good if we didn't drag it out so long."

He lifted his head to kiss her and she gratefully met him halfway there. It was meant to be a short kiss, probably, seeing the uncomfortable position, but that never worked with them. So they ended up in a fight for supremacy which Kyle won by pinning her under him.

"No more grinding. I need a cold shower anyway," he mumbled in her ear.

Kay giggled as he nibbled on her earlobe. "Then you should stop doing that or I might have to join you in the shower and we both know it wouldn't stay cold for long."

He laughed. "Were you always this naughty, or do I bring out this side of you?"

"You and only you." She cupped his face. "I was boring as fuck before I met you."

"Stop talking dirty because it's strangely turning me on."

They both dissolved into fits of laughter and kisses.

"Kyle."

Kay's heart jumped into her throat and she pulled away from him. Max stood at the top of the stairs, the golden light reflecting off his hair, making it look like he had a halo.

"Hello, Kay," he said, his tone grave.

"Hi," she squeaked back.

Kyle climbed off her and got to his feet. "What's up? Why are you here?"

The expression on Max's face was strained, as if someone was forcing him to talk against his will and he was ready to throw up. "We need to talk. There's an emergency."

Kyle threw her a worried look, but followed Max down the hall that led to his room. Kay stayed on the couch, hugging herself, wondering what had happened. Because she'd only seen Max so serious when he talked about the danger Kyle was in. But Kyle was safe, happy. So what was it?

Kyle came back five minutes later with Max, his luggage in hand, and Kay's blood seemed to freeze over. He looked tense, worried.

"I have to go. Something happened to my mom and I have to get home." He pressed a card into her hand. "The keys to the Ferrari so you can drive home. I'll call you as soon as I land."

"But..." She didn't even know what to say. Except that she didn't want him to go. Or that she wanted to go with him. But both options were impossible.

He took her face in his hands. "I love you."

"I love you, too," she whispered.

He kissed her urgently, desperately, then pulled back and hurried down the stairs. Max lingered for a moment, watching her with sorrowful eyes, and she understood. If something bad had happened to his sister, of course he was worried.

"I'm so sorry," he whispered and rushed down the stairs.

Kay frowned. Why would he be sorry? She leaned back on the couch, taking her phone out and looking at it as if Kyle would miraculously call. But he'd just left and it would be hours before she'd hear his voice again. Not to mention that their first date was canceled.

The sound of hurried footsteps on the stairs had her perking up. Maybe he'd forgotten something and she'd get to see him for a few seconds, steal another kiss.

Only it wasn't Kyle.

It was Donnie.

And he wasn't alone. Her furious parents trotted in his wake.
