Reader's perspective
(Y/N) gave Hank a hand as he stumbled out of his own car – which (Y/N) drove since he was severely drunk. "You know, you didn't have to do this (Y/N), I could've just called plastic asshole to get me."
"I found you behind the Jim's chugging whiskey, insisting that you were 'totally not fucking drunk, just tired' whilst you mumbled something about the Detroit Gears. You definitely needed a lift home."
She'd actually found his car beforehand – no sign of Connor, though – & immediately knew where he was.
(Y/N) opened the door before lowering her drunken friend onto his couch, Sumo welcoming her with a happy bark. Closing the door & locking it, she went into his kitchen to help around the house as much as she could.
"Hope you don't mind me cleaning up a bit."
"Not at all, hell, it would be the best thing this place has seen in a long time."
(Y/N) watched as her companion stumbled to bed, lucky enough she caught his arm before he tripped over his own feet.
"You know, you got a good heart kid, we need more people like you. Ones with less head up their ass."
"This is outside of work Hank, I'm just helping a friend in need, now get your drunken ass to bed."
He let out a chuckle before flopping onto his bed, only to fall asleep as soon as he hit the mattress. He muttered something before dozing off.
(Y/N) couldn't help but smirk, turning the light off for her friend as he lay sound asleep.
She finished washing a few dishes & picking up empty alcohol bottles around the house, giving Sumo belly rubs every now & again. She went into the bathroom, when she swore she heard knocking, but it must have been her imagination. (Y/N) peered into Hank's room, watching his chest rise & fall in a steady pattern. She knew about her friend's troubled past, the death of his son & his lapse into depression, she just wanted to help him whenever he needed it. Turning away from his room she almost tripped over her own feet, banging her elbow on the doorway & cursing under her breath.
A crash was heard from the kitchen as Sumo started to bark, before suddenly silencing. She reached for her gun before holding the firearm firmly in her hand.
"Who are you? I'm armed, what business do you have here?" (Y/N) yelled from the hallway, slowly edging toward the kitchen only to spot a certain RK800 model brushing glass off of his suit, adjusting his tie.
"My apologies, (Y/N), the door was locked & it seemed as though no-one was home. The window seemed like the least damaging way to get inside."
(Y/N) took another look at the window, wondering why Connor didn't ring the doorbell, before remembering it needed its batteries replaced.
"Well, there goes the replaced glass pane. Connor, next time, just open the window, alright? Actually, call me or Hank before pulling stunts like that again."
"Of course, sorry again for any problems I may have caused."
"That's alright Connor."
She placed the gun back on its mount near her calf, her heartbeat slowing.
"Your heart rate levels have gone back to a healthy beat pattern, I hope I didn't cause any distress (Y/N)."
"I'm quite alright Connor, you just, startled me, that's all."
"I will attempt to not let it happen again."
Connor had never been this worried about (Y/N) before, maybe a new software update gave him more human-like feelings? The android scoped the house, his eyes suddenly falling on the woman's (H/L) (H/C) curls as her (E/C) hues locked with his chocolate brown. (Y/N) pulled her eyes away, picking up the left-over magazines spread across the kitchen counter & placing them in a neat pile, Connor still observing her blankly.
"So, why exactly did you need to get Hank?"
"A new case came in, it's first official instructions were for me to retrieve both you & Lieutenant Anderson for our next mission."
"Both of us?"
"Yes, both of you (Y/N)."
Sumo came to (Y/N)'s side & the detective gave the canine a comforting pet.
"So, what's the case?"
"After the message the deviant's leader left the public with, the city has been uneasy & a brand new round of evidence has been left at the Stratford Tower, we need to get down there & investigate as soon as possible."
(Y/N) took a glance back at the hallway leading to Anderson's room, wishing she didn't have to wake him up. She looked at her watch.
"It's 1:50 AM right now Connor, can you at least give Anderson some time to get over his drunken state along with letting me get a few hours of sleep?"
He placed a hand on her shoulder.
"Of course, your health & safety come before the mission."
(Y/N) couldn't help but smile.
"-The health & safety of Lieutenant Anderson & you of course..." He responded with what seemed to be a tinge of regret before smirking awkwardly. Was he embarrassed? (Y/N) thought it would be fun to tease him, just to see what happened.
"What about you Connor? What would Hank & I do if we lost you?" She faked a worried look as she glanced at the ground, pressing a hand to her heart as though she was hurt.
"I realise humans take loss in a hurtful way, mourning over the lost soul. I promise I'll try my best not to get- "
He scanned his eyes over her again.
"Oh, I see, you're teasing me, aren't you?"
(Y/N) couldn't hold it in, letting out a whole-hearted laugh, she even thought that she heard the android stifle a chuckle for a second.
Is he slowly turning into what he was programmed to hunt?
She grabbed the bag that she left at Hank's place last time she stayed over to help cure him of his hangover. It had a pair of pyjamas, a toothbrush & toothpaste along with an old stuffy teddy bear she forgot to give to Sumo.
She usually crashed on the couch. One time when she was taking care of everything she felt more like the Lieutenant's daughter than his co-worker. She did feel like something along the lines of that though, she gave him lifts to his house whenever his car ran out of gas or he was too drunk to drive & she usually made them both coffee in the morning. They talked & joked together & it seemed like they formed a strong bond.
She felt glad about this, her father never truly showed as much affection as the Lieutenant did. He'd give (Y/N) nods of approval & small pats on the back, whilst Hank gave her a full-on hug last week when they attended the funeral of her older cousin who fought against a group of hostile deviants & lost.
She locked the door of the bathroom with the bag in her hand, Connor still standing in the kitchen, giving Sumo a small pet. She got into her pair of daggy, old yet comfortable PJs as the android yelled from the kitchen.
"Sorry about the window again. I'll have Cyberlife pay for the damages."
"It's fine Connor, no need to apologize."
After brushing her teeth, she walked out of the bathroom to see Connor on one knee, analysing the blood from where (Y/N) had bashed her hand against the wall, blocking the Lieutenant's head when he was stumbling around the house last week. She managed to scrape her knuckle a fair bit, but other than that she was fine.
When the android noticed (Y/N) entered the room he took several steps towards her, she noticed his LED blinking yellow, he must have been linking the blood sample to her blood type.
"You should be more careful (Y/N), although you lost a small amount of blood a harmful blow to the wall like this could've bruised your knuckles badly for about 3 weeks."
"A bruise is just a battle wound that shows you're not afraid of danger Connor, it's the small cuts & bruises you get from missions that help tell a story. Hell, I got a burn from the coffee I was drinking on the day I met you & I still haven't touched the wound, it's a good little reminder."
. . .
"Connor?"
He turned his face away. He didn't move, didn't even blink.
. . .
"Connor?"
"I'm okay. I just... Never thought of it like that..."
(Y/N) grabbed the spare cover that she had at the bottom of the bag, settling down onto the lounge that had a dent where she usually slept. The big Saint Bernard walked over to the woman, laying at the side of the couch as she ran her hand through his soft fur. The android sat at Anderson's dining table, most likely still pondering over what (Y/N) had told him. She gave Sumo the old teddy bear & the dog happily cuddled into it, letting out a tired huff.
"Hey, Connor?"
He turned to face (Y/N).
"Yes?"
"Don't stay up all night worrying, alright?"
"Of course."
Connor turned off the light in the kitchen, his LED still emitting a small, subtle glow amongst the darkness.
She heard footsteps as she watched the light move across the room as the android sat in the chair next to her.
"Sleep well, (Y/N)."
She couldn't help but smile as she started to drift into slumber.
"I will, thank you."
