You got up from your bed. It was dark everywhere, but you were used to that. You had been living in Nepal and learning there for a few years now. Ever since Steven Strange arrived you had been catching up on your knowledge. You didn’t want him to know more than you did.
You heard the rain and then thunder as you slowly headed outside. You put on your hood and stared up into the night sky. Just your luck.. You took a deep breath before you started running towards the library. You heard your wet footsteps in the soil. This wasn’t really comfortable.
When you headed inside you realised you weren’t alone. You saw Steven there. He was eating an apple and scrolling through a book. You looked at the private collection against the back wall.
‘You took a book from The Ancient one’s collection?’ You asked.
Steven turned around and he looked at you. He saw you here before. You had a similar interest in books as you always returned the ones he wanted to read.
‘No.’ He lied before putting his apple down.
‘I see it right there! Put it back, there’s a reason why we aren’t allowed to read that.’
Steven shrugged and continued flipping the pages of the book. You balled your fist and walked over to him. You slammed your hand down besides him on the table. You saw him reading about the eye of agamotto. He then looked up and stared at it.
‘Don’t you dare, Steven.’ You snapped at him.
Steven looked at you and then back at the book. He was quiet for a moment before he turned around to look behind him.
‘Wong?’ he asked.
There was no response. He looked at you and raised his brows.
‘You’re just a curious as I am. I know you are. If you aren’t you have the right to leave right now.’
Steve was right. Being curious was a part of your nature. There were so many books you couldn’t read. Some many knowledge you couldn’t possess. Steven got up and he headed towards the eye. You started to panic a little.
‘Steven!’ You hissed.
He stood behind the stand and grabbed the necklace. He put it on and walked back towards you. You grabbed his hand and held it firmly. He looked you in the eyes.
‘You’re playing with dangerous forces. Put it back.’
‘No. Now sit down, this will be interesting.’
A part of you wanted to walk away and got Wong or the Ancient One.. but a part of you wanted to watch what he was going to do. You slowly let him go and back down. You wanted to head straight to the door but your curiosity got the better of you. You sighed in frustration and grabbed the chair Steven was just sitting on. You moved it to the front of the table and sat down facing him.
‘Okay..’ Steven said. ‘First open the eye of agamotto..’
Steven laid his hand on the table and focussed for a moment. He brought up his hands and formed a diamond shape with his hands with two fingers sticking in the air. He crossed his arms and you watched the eye open slowly, the green light admitting from it. He looked at it and then back at you.
‘All right..’ he said.
He then laid his wrists together and open his hands. He started turning them and a green circle with symbols appeared in front of him. As he pulled back one of his hands, the circle formed a sleeve around his other arms.
‘Wow..’ You said.
While keeping his hands that way, he turned his arm to the right. You stared at his apple and watch the bite he took from it, multiply. Until only the centre of the apple was still there. When he turned his arm left, the apple returned.
‘Oh my..’ He said.
He then turned his arm back to the right and even went as far as to let it rot before turning it back.
‘what if..’
He grabbed his apple and put it away. He moved the book forwards and turned it to the page that was ripped out.
‘Steven I think that’s enough-‘
But he already started to turn it back. You saw the page re-appear and attach against the book. You got up and looked at it. A ritual appeared..
‘Dormammu..’ You said. ‘The dark dimension.. eternal life!’
Suddenly you were disturbed by a glass wall forming in front of you two.
‘Stop!’ Mordo yelled.
Steven dropped his arms and looked back. You breathed heavily as you looked at him.
‘Tempering with continuum probabilities is forbidden.’ Mordo said while walking in.
‘I- I was just doing exactly what it said in the book!’
Wong also walked in and pushed you aside.
‘What did the book say about the dangers of performing that ritual?’
‘I don’t know, I hadn’t gotten to that part yet.’
‘Temporal manipulations can create branches in time!’ Mordo spoke. ‘Unstable dimensional openings. Spatial paradoxes! Time loops! You wanna get stuck reliving the same moment over and over forever, or never having existed at all!’
You suddenly felt really bad. You should’ve done more to try and stop him. Mordo was almost never this angry.
‘Really should put the warnings before the spell.’ You said.
‘I’m really disappointed in you Y/N.’ Wong said. ‘Your curiosity could have gotten you killed. Both of you. You weren’t manipulating the space-time continuum, you were breaking it.’
Wong picked up the book.
‘We do not tamper with natural law! We defend it.’
Steven gave you an apologetic look before looking back at Mordo. The tension was unreal.
‘Where did you learn the litany of spells required to even understand it?’
‘I’ve got a photographic memory. That’s how I got my M.D. and Ph.D. at the same time.’
‘What you just did.. takes more than a good memory. You were born for the mystic arts.’
Of course he had that luck. You had been training for years and couldn’t even do what he could. That’s why you were so obsessed with beating him.. but you clearly couldn’t.
‘And yet my hands still shake.’ Steven spoke annoyed.
‘Yeah, for now.’ Wong said.
‘Not forever?’ he asked.
‘We’re not profphets.’
You saw that Steve was getting angry. He really wanted answers and a cure but he wasn’t going to get that. No one could get those for him.
‘When are you going to start telling me what we are?’
Mordo and Wong looked at you and then at each other. They then headed over to the stand where the eye was placed on.
‘While hero’s like the avengers protect the word from physical danger..’ You said while talking him with you. ‘We sorcerers safeguard it against more.. mystical threats.’
Wong opened up a simulation of the earth. You all took a place around it and looked up. You could’ve told Steven this ages ago but you never knew if you should.
‘The Ancient One is the latest in a long line of Sorcerers Supreme.’ Wong followed. ‘going back thousands of years to the father of mystic arts, the mighty Agamotto. Same sorcerer who created the eye you so recklessly borrowed.’
You looked up the globe above you.
‘Agamotto built thee Sanctums in places of power where great cities now stand.’ You said. ‘That door leads to the Hong Kong Sanctum, that door to the New York Sanctum. That one to the London Sanctum.’
You pointed Steven to each of the doors. Wong then took over again. You did get that they were disappointed in you seeing you knew all of this.. seeing you knew the importance of the eye of agamotto.
‘Together, the Sanctums generate a protective shield around our world.’
‘the shields protect the world.. and we sorcerers protect the Sanctums.’ Mordo said.
You saw the confused look on Stevens face.
‘From what?’ he asked.
‘other dimensional beings that threaten our universe.’
‘Like dormammu.’
A silence followed. Dormammu wasn’t a name they typically learned everyone. He basically just read it but Mordo and Wong didn’t know that yet.
‘where did you learn that name?’ Mordo asked.
‘He just read it, in the book of Cagliostro.’ You said.
Mordo looked at you and then at Wong. Wong moved his hands of the stone pillar.
‘dormammu dwells in the Dark Dimension, beyond time. He’s the cosmic conqueror, the destroyer of worlds. A being of infinite power and endless hunger, on a quest to invade every universe and bring all worlds into his Dark Dimension.. and he hungers for earth most of all.’
Steven was shocked as he stared up at the simulation. He finally started to understand what Kaecilius stole.
‘The pages that Kaecilius stole.’
‘A ritual to contact Dormammu.’ You filled him in. ‘And draw power from the Dark Dimension.’
Steven started laughing. You didn’t get why, this wasn’t funny at all.
‘uh.. okay.. um.. I’m out. I came here to heal my hand. Not to fight a mystical war.’
Just when he said that a bell started ringing…
