At midnight, we made our way to that house of Sally's grandfather.
"Hey didn't Jonny want to come along?" I remembered that he asked me first and I allowed it. But Drac faked his smile, "He...changed his mind. He wanted to stay with Mavis." As much as I wanted to believe him, that smile was a little off.
"So which way now?" I asked, looking at the vampire.
He pointed in one direction that I would have never gone there alone, the darkest part of the forest. It was a path, but pitch black. Drac offered me his arm, while I gave him a deadly glare, "Don't.bother."
Click!
With a flashlight I could see a few feet before me...it didn't help though, the forest was still extremely creepy. The vampire beside me didn't help either. Drac looked at me a little confused, "Do you think he will recognize you?" "Why shouldn't he?" "Well," he tries to explain it, "...vampires don't age, but humans do..." "I get it! I don't think I changed that much." For the next few minutes, it stayed silent.
The only sound was the cracks we made, breaking dry branches and walking over leaves.
"How far is it?" I asked, as fog surrounded us.
"It should be...."
BAM!!!!!!!!
"Who is there?!" shouted a rough voice.
We stayed silent.
"I know you are there...come out!"
My muscles were tense. I stopped breathing for a minute.
"You vile creatures come out and show yourself!"
I shivered in fear, "...L...Lord...er..."
"Who is there?!!!"
BAM!!!
Drac covered my body with his. My body was shaking violently, "Mr. Lorder?...Uncle...Lorder?"
The footsteps got closer, "Who are you?"
Slowly, my voice came back, "I am...N/A. Jade's best friend."
The steps...stopped, "N/A...little N/A."
Drac and I looked up. He stood before us, still his rifle pointed at us, "And that creature?" Normally, I couldn't give a damn about this vampire, but at the same time, "Don't shoot. He...is a friend. Uncle...meet Count Dracula." Lorder wasn't too happy to see the Count and only grunted as a greeting. He removed his weapon and gestured us to follow him. "How are you uncle?" I asked him.
"Like an old man has to...sick and tired...waiting for the end."
"Don't say that uncle."
Suddenly, I saw a different look on him, as we entered the living room. He pointed at the arm chair in the corner, "It felt like yesterday, as you sat on my lap, listening to my stories. My wife made you hot chocolate and later on...you fell asleep in my arms." I didn't interrupt him. He seemed to be happy, remembering the past, "Over there on the carpet, you and Jade played board games...hours and hours you played. Goodness...how long ago was it?" He took my hand in his and made me twirl around once, "You have grown up so fast, from a little girl to a beautiful woman."
"You changed too uncle "I said, trying to touch his face.
He swapped it away, "I know, to a grumpy old man. Who has nothing left...but his memories."
"What about your children?"
I shouldn't have said that. His eyes turned angry, pointing at a family portrait, "What children?! One turned against his family and died and the other is rotten to the very core by greed and my beloved wife...left me with my pain. There is nothing left for me to live for."
"This is not true" I said, holding his hand tight, "...there is one thing you can live for...that you have to live for."
His eyes showed no sign of hope, "What could possibly be this important thing that I should live on for?" "For me?" he gave me a heart full laugh, "Oh darling! You are young enough to live on your own, although I would have been proud, if my son would have picked you instead of that other woman."
"You never gave her a chance. How can you talk about someone you hardly know?"
"SHE TOOK MY SON!" he barked, collapsing into the armchair, "...she took him...and he is never coming back again."
I was close to tears, as he self was fighting them. With a shaky voice he begged us to leave him be, hiding his face with his hand. I know him...in this condition it was impossible to talk to him. Before we went, I took a book out of my bag, placing it next to his chair, "he might be gone...but he also left you something behind...something that you should be proud of. I know I do. Call me if you want to have this chance."
With that, Drac and I left the house.
Lorder inspected the book slowly, as tears rolled down his cheeks. He remembered the book from the past. It was mine and Jades favorite book: The adventures of Huckleberry Finn. Inside was a paper of a birth certificate, a paper with my phone number and a photo. He leaned into his chair and held the photo into the light. Fighting to see through his tears, he could finally see it. On it was Jade, Lara...and a little girl.
"My little girl...Sally."
