"Hiccup! Look out!" You called. He avoided another attack by the Triple Strike with a frustrated groan. You stayed on Nightshade, ready to defend him if need be. Toothless jumped in front of him, getting ready to fire.
"Toothless, no! We're trying to train it." Hiccup told his dragon. You frowned.
"How are we supposed to train it if we can't get close to it?" You asked.
"I guess you can't blame it. The last humans it dealt with forced it to fight other dragons to the death."
"Hiccup, this is getting dangerous. Don't you think maybe it's time to stop?"
"We're making progress. If we could just find a way to get this guy on board. Have him fighting with us instead of against us." It roared again and you got ready.
"Nightshade! Multiple blasts!" You ordered. She followed your command, firing close but not too close. Hiccup continued trying to defend his reasoning to keep going.
"Look, we've dealt with way worse."
"Snotlout doesn't count." You told him.
"Good one, (Y/n). I'll have to remember that." Fishlegs said, coming in on Meatlug.
"Fishlegs! What going on? Is something happening back at the Edge that you need us for?" You asked.
"Snotlout and the Twins just got back from patrol, and there are multiple storm fronts heading right for us. We need to lock down the Edge before they start to hit." He replied.
"Okay," Hiccup called. He looked back at the dragon. "We're not done here." It roared back, but you both took off, heading to help with the lockdown.
Once you got there, Arrow was already ordering people to do things. You followed his orders, keeping the dragons calm at the stables. You made sure they were all comfy and cozy before heading back out.
You joined the others in the clubhouse. Arrow was still making sure everything had gotten done. Hiccup walked in and was immediately asked a question.
"Did you drop off the food and water at the stables?"
"Yep. Troughs are all full." Hiccup replied. Fishlegs came in as the door shut behind him.
"Well, the dragons are all cozy in their pens."
"And they should be calm and relaxed too." You added.
"Did you lock the main doors?" Arrow asked.
"Arrow, Arrow, of course. Who would forget something like that? I mean, I guess it is possible. But I would never. But then again, there's a first time for everything." Fishlegs said uncertainly. Arrow groaned.
"I'll go check." You stopped him.
"I got it. I should've checked before anyway." You said and hurried off.
"(Y/n), wait!" Hiccup called, but you were already out the door. You used the zip line to get there faster. You did a smooth roll before hurrying over to the stables. As you got there, you saw a flash of light as lightning struck the top of the building. You gasped. The dragons!!
You raced inside and saw them all freaking out in their pens. You ran inside and swung open the pen doors. You needed to get all of them out of there and fast.
"Come on, everyone! Hurry, hurry! Let's go!" You called as all of the dragons rushed out. You saw one of the Night Terrors get trapped in a pen by some rocks and wood. You frowned and hurried to help. Nightshade barked for you to come back. "Its okay, girl! No dragon left behind!" You said and helped the little Night Terro get free. "Come on, little guy! Let's go!" You said, herding him out as you ran along behind him.
Just as you got to the door, a huge flash of lightning struck right in front of you. The light was so bright that it blinded you for a moment. The impact of the flash was worse. It threw you back and you shrieked before hitting your head and blacking out.
*A few minutes later*
You heard voices as you laid there, unable to move and surrounded by darkness. Uhg...what...what happened?
"What happened? Is she okay!?" Huh...?
"I don't know. We found her like this. The place was collapsing." H...Hiccup? W-why can't I...see you? M-my eyes...hurt.
"What about my Hookfang? Did you see him?"
"Speaking of wayward dragons, nobody happened to see one Barf and Belch?" The dragons...I saw them take off. Are they lost?
"Guys, they got spooked by the storm and took off. But I'm sure they're fine and they'll be back. Right now, I'm worried about (Y/n)."
"Hiccup's right. (Y/n) is our first course of action. She's one of us and we need to make sure she's okay." You heard Arrow agree with Hiccup. What? Why are they...worried? Gods above...w-what happened?
"Sure. Easy for you to say, Hiccup! Toothless is right here. Everything's peachy for you." There was a pause and you tried to move. C-come on...just let me...move. "Just an observation."
"H...Hiccup? Mmmph..." You opened your eyes, or at least, tried to, but you still could see nothing. You felt a hand take yours, caressing it gently. It was a touch you were familiar with, but the person behind it was nowhere to be seen. Nobody was there. It was only darkness.
"(Y/n)! You're okay. You're okay. I'm right here." He hushed you. You frowned.
"H-Hiccup? B-but...w-why can't I see you? I-it's...so...dark..." You felt his grip tighten as you said that, sitting up.
"It's not...dark?" He said unsurely.
"But...i-it is! I-I can hear you, but...why can't I see you?"
"(Y/n)..." You stood up, wobbling slightly and trying to reach out for anyone.
"W-what's happening? Hiccup? Guys? Please, somebody, say something." You said, pulling your arms in and hugging yourself as your breathing quickened. You were afraid and lost in what seemed like a never-ending abyss and it only made your heart race faster. You hated darkness so this was terrifying to you.
"Uh...your hair looks really nice. I mean, considering all the fire and lighting and debris and..." Tuff said, trying to help. You felt a pair of hands on both of your shoulders.
"Guys, let me talk to her." Hiccup said. "Alone." He told them after a moment. They all headed out and you heard Tuff whisper rather loudly to Ruff.
"She can't see." You frowned. You felt Hiccup guide you to a seat next to him. You felt his arm brush yours as you gripped his hand, fear still coursing through your veins.
"Hiccup...what's happening to me?" You whimpered quietly.
"Whatever it is, I'm sure it's only temporary. You remember when Bucket lost his sight? He got it back." Hiccup told you. You frowned.
"But...now he wears a metal bucket on his head, permanently." You countered worriedly.
"True. Well, all I am saying is...oh, Thor, what am I saying?" He muttered to himself. You frowned. You turned toward him as best you could.
"I know what you're trying to tell me. Which is why I'm glad you're here. I...I couldn't do this without you, you know." You told him. "But...I...I'm scared, Hiccup."
"Look, when there's a break in the storm we'll fly to Berk and see Gothi. She'll be able to help you. In the meantime, (Y/n), you need rest."
"What? No, wait, what about Nightshade? She's out there all alone. All of the dragons are." You said to him as he tried to lay you back down on the floor.
"Don't worry about that right now. Just rest." You frowned, but you obeyed, laying down as your head rested against a pillow. You felt very self-conscious now about everything around you.
"Hiccup? Are you still there?"
"Yes." He replied quickly, yet gently. "Yes. I'm here, (Y/n)." You bit your lip as it quivered slightly.
"W-will you and Toothless stay with me a little while? Just until I fall asleep? I-I just...p-please don't leave me alone, Hiccup." You whimpered. You felt a hand cup you're cheek.
"I would never leave you, (Y/n). Of course we'll stay. We're not going anywhere, are we, bud?" You heard Toothless grumble out a purr-like noise before hearing the sounds of him curling up around both of you. You smiled softly.
"Thank you." You whispered.
"For you," Hiccup behind, kissing the back of your hand and rubbing in gently with his thumb to comfort you. "anything."
*The next day*
Tuff was going to try to test to see if you could still see. You thought it was stupid, as did everyone else, but that didn't stop him. You sighed heavily as he began.
"Okay. Thorston Blind Field Test, numero uno. Who...is standing right in front of you?" You sighed again.
"Tuff, I know it's you."
"She got it! She's fine, everybody. Oh, thank Thor. Phew. That was a close one." You rolled your eyes. Even if you couldn't see, you could still make gestures with them.
"Guys, we can't worry about me right now. We need to worry about our dragons. They're still out there and obviously scared or they would've come back." You said.
"Guys, she's got a point. We need to round them up before the next storm hits." Hiccup announced. He turned to you. "Toothless and I will find Nightshade. Don't you worry." You shot a glare in his general direction.
"Excuse me? That's my dragon and I'm not going to just sit here helpless while she's out there alone. I'm coming too."
"Sorry. Not an option."
"Listen, I'm more effective blind, then some riders, who shall rename nameless that are fully sighted." You hinted, trying to glare at Ruff and Tuff.
"Is she looking at us?" Tuff asked.
"She can't see. Hence, she cannot actually look. So, no." Ruff added.
"(Y/n), there is no way you're flying in your condition. Right? I'm sorry. As leader, I am putting my foot down." You glared at him. Oh yeah?
*5 minutes later*
"Remind me never to put my foot down again," Hiccup muttered to Toothless as you sat behind him, riding alone during the search.
"I can still hear you, Hiccup, but yeah. Probably a good idea, hm?" You told him. He sighed heavily and kept going. Suddenly you were going down and you yelped, losing balance and nearly falling off. He caught you, luckily.
"Whoa! Okay, you've gotta hold on tighter." He told you. You frowned, feeling bad.
"Sorry..."
"No, don't apologize. The truth is...obviously, I'm glad you're here." You smiled and hugged him from behind, nuzzling your face into the crook of his neck. You felt him tense up, but then he relaxed and you smiled, muttering softly into his neck.
"Thank you, Hiccup."
"You don't need to thank me for anything, (Y/n). It'll be alright. Now, let's go find your dragon." You smiled and nodded as you both continued to search. "Down there looks like a good place to stop and look around. Hang onto me, okay?" You nodded and held on tighter as you both went down.
You landed together near a river in a small clearing. You could tell because you heard the water near you and the rustling of the leaves in the wind was quieter from where you stood. You called out for your dragon, worried and anxious to find her.
"Nightshade! Nightshade, come here, girl! It's okay to come out now!" You called.
"Okay, I'm thinking that, as jittery as the dragons were, they probably want to get as far away from the storm as possible. So, if we take this stream down towards the beach..." You shook your head.
"No, Hiccup. Nightshade isn't like that. She's loyal to me and I know that she's worried about me more than herself. That means she would be trying to find her way back to the Edge upstream." You hurried upstream, but you tripped on a big rock and yelped.
"(Y/n)!" You felt Hiccup try to catch you, but he ended up more-so crashing into you. You were pinned underneath him. Though you couldn't see him, you looked up at him, your face flushing brightly.
"U-um...a-are you okay?" He asked unsurely. You nodded.
"U-um...y-yeah. I-I'm okay..." You said. "W-we should...probably get, um....g-get going." You said shyly.
"Yeah! That's exactly what I was gonna... Get going." He stuttered awkwardly, getting up and helping you up as well. You suddenly heard something above you, on the cliffs. It had four legs, you could tell that much.
"Do you hear that?" You asked.
"Hear what?"
"Something's coming at us." You walked toward the sound as ou recognized the sound of a bark.
"(Y/n), what are you doing?" You turned back, addressing Hiccup with a smile.
"It's okay! It's Nightshade!" Nightshade showed up and roared happily. She climbed down the cliffs and you smiled as she wrapped her long neck around you, giving you a huge hug.
"There's my girl! Oh, I knew you'd come!" Suddenly, she pulled away. Something was wrong. "What is it, girl? What's wrong?" You heard a noise and you gasped, turning around swiftly.
"Hiccup! Above you!" It was the Triple Strike. You recognized the roar. Suddenly, you were being yanked out of the way. You both still got separated, however.
"Okay, (Y/n), there's a rock formation ten paces to your left! Hide behind it and you'll be safe." Hiccup called.
"What? No way! You're not taking this dragon on alone! Nightshade! Here girl!" You thought you found her, but she moved. "Nightshade?" The Triple Strike attacked you again, but Hiccup and Toothless pulled you out of the way.
"You, stay!"
"Hiccup! Come on! Are you serious?!" You shouted.
"We'll discuss it later!" He called back before clearly getting hit again.
"You can't do it without me! Admit it! Nightshade! Come here, girl!" You called.
"It's okay. She's with me. We need her help. And I can't fight this thing if all I am doing is worrying about you." Hiccup said. You frowned, frustrated, but mostly upset.
"Okay, okay! Fine!" You hid, making sure to stay out of their way. "This is not what I should be doing right now. I'm one of the most skilled riders of out all of us!" You said to yourself.
"Nightshade! Dart shot!" Hiccup ordered. You listened as they drove the Triple Strike away. You frowned, feeling useless and helpless. Why do I always land myself in this role? I don't need saving or protection! I...I don't... "Okay, (Y/n)! It's safe! Come on." You came out and sauntered over to all of them, rubbing your arm sadly with your head hung low. "Okay, let's mount up and get back to the Edge before that thing comes back." You walked over to Toothless "Uh, no, (Y/n), that's Toothless. Don't you want to ride Nightshade?" Nightshade whined as you walked over to Toothless.
"I think she's made it clear she doesn't want me riding her." You muttered.
"(Y/n), she was protecting you. She didn't want you in that fight. It was pretty cool if you think about it." You frowned, looking toward him.
"Cool? What so cool about being the one that can't help? That does nothing no matter how much they want to..." You said, your heart continuing to grow heavier and heavier.
"Look, obviously, I can't even imagine what this might be like for you. You're...well, you're (Y/n). And you're a (L/n) at that! You're strong, skilled, a leader...invincible!" He listed.
"How can I be a leader when I need somebody to guide me through every step? How am I supposed to be strong like this? What if...we can't fix this? H-Hiccup...what if I never see you again?" Tears were in your eyes at this point. The fear of never being able to see Hiccup or your family again was soul-crushing. You felt a hand cup your cheek while a thumb gently wiped your tears away.
"Don't talk like that. Please. And don't cry. Whether you can see me or not, I'm not leaving your side, (Y/n). Just because you can't see doesn't mean you're helpless."
"But that's exactly how I feel... I'm...powerless against this. Hiccup...I...I can't go the rest of my life without looking at you. All of you. The gang, the dragons, my family...you all mean too much to me. I...I can't do this without you..." His hands gently held onto your arms.
"(Y/n), you and I have been through everything together. You don't think we can handle this?" His hands drifted down to hold yours and your cheeks flushed. Still, you listened as you spoke. You could feel his breath tickling your skin with every word he spoke. "(Y/n), you have me, no matter what. Okay, whatever that means, whatever you want it to mean...I am with you. There will always be a Hiccup and (Y/n). Always." You felt the gentle puff of his breaths get closer to you and the tips of his messy auburn hair brushed your forehead. You tensed. I-is he...?
Just as you were about to question him about what he was doing, you heard a noise again. You turned slightly, cutting whatever he was doing off and putting your focus into the sound instead.
"Did you hear that?"
"What? I didn't hear anything." He replied. You heard another clicking noise.
"There it is again. Behind you!" Suddenly, Hiccup pulled you in close and shielded you as he pulled you out of the way of another Triple Strike attacked.
"Okay, this guy has got to go. Now." You both got up and Hiccup took action.
"Toothless, distress call!" Toothless fired a shot and soon, the other riders were there. You were hiding and listening. It was always the same sound. You began to understand what it meant. Snotlout came over to you along with the twins and Arrow.
"(Y/n)! Thank Thor. All I could think about was-" You held up a finger, cutting him off and listening again.
"Do you guys hear that? It's that same sound before every attack." You told them.
"Uh, what is she talking about?" Snotlout asked. Hiccup called them over.
"Uh, guys, a little help over here would be nice! We need to surround it. It can't hit us all at once." They hurrid to help and you heard the noise again before the next attack. You knew what to do.
"Nightshade! To me, girl! Now!" You called. She obeyed, hurrying over. You hopped into the saddle. "It responds to sound, girl. Let's finish this, huh?" She barked in agreement and you both took to the air. You listened for the right timing. The noise came again and you ordered the command.
"Nightshade! Multiple darts!" She fired two of them, stopping the Triple Strike's attack.
"What?" Hiccup exclaimed.
"Hey, when did she get her sight back?" Tuff asked.
"Uh, she didn't. (Y/n), what are you doing!?" He called.
"It's okay, Hiccup! I know what to do! I'm not letting you guys continue to get roughed up by this dragon! Besides, I know how to do this now!" You flew around and listened for the sound. It came again and you grinned.
"Nightshade, fire blasts!" She blasted some shots before firing two darts again. You landed and grabbed the darts.
"What is she doing!?" Arrow exclaimed.
"(Y/n), no! Get out of there!" Hiccup called.
"Shh! It's alright! Trust me, guys!" You said and walked toward the dragon. You clacked the two darts together, creating a sound that mimicked the Triple Strike and distracted it. "That's right." Just a little closer.
"She's using the clicks to distract it." Hiccup finally pieced together. You got closer and held out your hand. You heard a purring noise as it leaned in, nuzzling your hand with its snout. "And that's how we get close enough to train it."
"Amazing!" Snotlout said.
"Well, what do ya know? She really did have it all along." Arrow added.
"Hey, I think (Y/n) just stoled you move," Tuff said.
"It-it's not 'my move', Tuffnut."
"Wait, so anyone can use it? Why didn't you tell us that?" Tuff said as he did it to his sister.
"How'd she do that? She can't see a thing." Ruff asked as you walked over with a smile.
"She doesn't need to. She's using her other senses.
