(Listening Suggestion: Moon and Back - Alice Kristiansen)
"A little to the left. Little bit more. Little bit- No, no, no, no, no, no, no. No, now we got to go back right. Let's get- Let's head back to the right!" Tuff said.
"Failure is not an option. The entire known world is counting on us!" His sister added. You were watching as the Twins turned dropping trash into a game.
"So does everything have to be a game with them or...?" Hiccup began.
"They share a pea brain, Hiccup. And peas are really small to start with." Snotlout laughed before crying out as the Twins nearly hit him with the trash pile.
"Nailed it!" Ruffnut cheered.
"Okay, look, come on down, you two. We have to decide what to do with all this scrap metal." You called to them.
"Throw it in the water with those Nuts." Snotlout grumbled, standing back up.
"And pollute the ocean? Uh-uh. Not on my watch." Fishlegs said strictly.
"If only there was a way, some-some way that this metal, this very metal here could benefit all of dragon-kind." Tuff began.
"Yeah, like if there was a dragon that could somehow reuse all this junk," Ruff added.
"Armorwing!" You, Hiccup, and Fishlegs all said together with smiles.
"The Armorwing? That thief?" Snotlout protested.
"This great deed shall be known forevermore as...re..." He paused. "doing the thing."
"Yeah, We'll figure it out, bro," Ruff told her brother.
"Re-figure it out, bro." You sighed. I don't think that's what she meant, Tuff.
Then, Mala and Dagur arrived on Sleuther. You wondered why they had come. But then you spotted an arrow in Dagur's shoulder. You grew more concerned very fast. Is he okay? I mean, he's smiling, as is Mala, but...
"Hiccup!" Dagur called excitedly.
"Dagur. Mala. A-arrow?" Hiccup said, also concerned and confused.
"Are you guys okay?" Fishlegs asked.
"Never better! Why do you ask?" Dagur replied.
"You have an arrow sticking out of your...nothing," Fishlegs said.
"We have a very important announcement, Hiccup Haddock." Mala began.
"I just finished the Defenders of the Wing King Trials. Nailed it!" Dagur cheered.
"We are getting married," Mala said happily.
"Yes, we are." Dagur agreed, smiling.
"I'm over the moon!"
"Oh-ho-hoo!" Fishlegs squealed happily at the two. You felt a slight hint of jealousy. First Nathan and Pepper are betrothed and now Mala and Dagur are getting married? Why is everyone else doing more things than us...
"Now, if, uh, someone could fix this before the ceremony, I would greatly appreciate it. Don't want to scare the new in-laws." Dagur said, gesturing to the arrow. Hiccup laughed nervously.
"In-laws..." He said with a sigh.
"Come on, Dagur. I'll fix you up." You offered.
"Thanks, (Y/n)!" He came with you as you took him to help with his problem. After he was all fixed up, you headed to the clubhouse. The two were just all over each other. It seemed like so much. You kept feeling this uncomfortable pit in your stomach.
"Eskimo," Dagur said.
"Mm, butterfly."
"Beard tickles." Snotlout gagged at their behavior.
"You are the Dagur in my heart and the king of my kingdom."
"And you are my Queen Mala-poo. Poopy, poop-" You did your best to ignore the feeling...and them for the matter.
"Uh...Hiccup?" Arrow asked, also weirded out.
"They did seem to get along after the Twins' whole mediation thing, but...ugh." Hiccup said quietly.
"Marriage? Wait, w-when? How?" Fishlegs asked.
"Let me set the scene, Fishy. One day, I was sitting pondering this one little spot of fat that I just can't seem to get rid of no matter how many crunches I do. Then it just- It hit me, Fishy." Dagur said.
"Or more specifically, I hit him," Mala said, hitting his shoulder.
"Ah, it was love at first fight. Hit me again."
"Oh, no, no."
"Go on, hit me again."
"Dagur."
"Hit me again. Hit me again!"
"Now's not the time." Ruffnut suddenly spoke up.
"Hey, lovebirds. Know what you're gonna need? You need someone to plan the wedding."
"We offer our services to the rightful king and queen. It will be the grandest event the known world has ever known. That which it cannot know, it will not, but this, the known world, will know what it is." Tuff said.
"Uh-huh." His sister agreed.
"You've done this before?" Mala asked.
"Never. Not even a kid's birthday party. Not worried about it though. It's gonna be awesome, 'cause we're the best in the biz." Ruff told them.
"Don't focus on those Nuts, my queen. Your boo is yearning for your affection~" Dagur said to Mala. You mentally groaned, tired of hearing the two.
"Would it be insulting if I barfed everywhere?" Snotlout said.
"Well, I think it's kind of sweet. Proof that true love knows no bounds. Right, guys?" Fishlegs said, looking at you and Hiccup.
"Hey, how come you guys never use sappy names or rub your beards on each other?" Snotlout asked. You raised an eyebrow at him at the second part. Seriously?
"Uh, because we don't have beards, Snotlout." Hiccup said, clearly thinking the same thing.
"Drop the act. It's obvious what true love really looks like." He said, gesturing to Mala and Dagur. You felt even more unsettled now. Is he right?
"O-okay, look, (Y/n) and I have a different kind of relationship, built on years of friendship." He looked to you and you nodded, quickly playing it off.
"Right. Yeah, um, years of friendship." You agreed. Years of friendship that both of us were too afraid to change sooner... You were starting to really hate that voice in the back of your head.
*Later*
You had been laying in bed, thinking about everything that happened. You felt worse with every reminder that every other couple seemed to be doing things but you and Hiccup. You knew that you cared deeply about him, but why did it feel like it was changing? Why were things starting to feel uncertain?
You looked at your necklace for the hundredth time that day. You and Hiccup always wore your gifts, never taking them off, but you usually kept your necklace tucked away under your armor for protection. It really was beautiful and important to you. You didn't want anything to happen to it.
Then, another thought occurred to you. Hiccup never made any efforts to wear his in a safer place. It began to scare you. Does he not care if he loses it? Or if it gets damaged? Or stolen!? Your head was racing and so was your heart as all of these absurd thoughts flew through your head. You began to feel panicky. Were you just being crazy or was there some truth behind your theories? You were so riled up, you couldn't even think straight enough to try and sort that question out.
Then, there was a knock on your door. You sat up swiftly, getting excited. Hiccup!? You hoped it was him. Was he coming to spend time with you? You would've been overjoyed if that were the case.
You rushed down the stairs and to the door. You opened it up, but you were surprised to see the Twins standing there. They were not who you were expecting. And the for sure weren't who you wished was there.
"You, uh...You want the yak or the fish?" Tuff asked.
"What? For what?
"For the royal wedding," Ruffnut explained.
"It's important to have an accurate count before we..." He leaned in, whispering, "kill all the yaks and fish, all the fish." He spotted the necklace. "Hey, nice necklace, (Y/n)."
"Uh, thanks." You began. "But, Tuff, one question."
"Sure! What is it?"
"Are you talking about the horrible salt-encrusted seabass?"
"...How would you like your yak cooked?"
"I knew we should've offered a meatless option," Ruff told him. The twins headed off as you saw Hiccup and Toothless coming over. You smiled, your heart lifting. You hoped he'd notice that your necklace was out.
"Hey, so can you believe this wedding deal?" Toothless noticed your necklace, roaring at it. "I mean, I've never seen Dagur so passionate about anything. Well, except maybe killing me."
"Yeah. they can't seem to take their eyes off each other." You said, glancing down at your necklace, hoping to give him the hint. Still, he didn't notice.
"Yeah, no kidding. So want to deliver some scrap metal?" You felt your heart sink.
"Yeah, sure. Let's go." You said, hiding your disappointment. Toothless and Hiccup took off as Nightshade come over. She cooed at you.
"Yeah, I know, girl. Don't worry, I'm okay." You told her. However, you were starting to not believe that yourself.
After the flight to the Armorwing's island, you all took your turn dumping the metal off for the Armorwing. You and Nightshade landed last.
"Hopefully the Armorwing will accept it." Hiccup said. Suddenly, Dagur freaked out.
"Why? Hiccup? Why!?" Hiccup was pretty startled by this.
"Uh, uh, well the dragon uses metal to protect itself, so it would-"
"No! Why must I be away from my beloved? My heart bleeds without her like it's been ripped from my heaving chest and left to die on a lonely, distant rock." Dagur said.
"Aw, that's so beautiful, Dagur. Very poetic." You felt your anger start to return. Now it was getting to you in an even worse way. You groaned and began to head off. Hiccup, however, noticed this.
"Hey, is everything all right?" He asked. You turned to say something, but Dagur cut in.
"Hiccup, brother! I know this question might come as a shock, but...will you honor me by being my best man? Before you answer, I-I know I don't deserve you, but I-I just can't imagine that glorious day without you by my side." You were stunned. Are. You. SERIOUS!? If you were a dragon, Dagur would've been on fire by now. Hiccup chuckled a little, kind of nervous and freaked out as Dagur got down on one knee for some odd reason.
"Uh, Dagur, I-I don't...I don't know what to say."
"Say yes," Dagur growled.
"Uh...uh, yes." Hiccup agreed, not feeling like he had a choice.
"Oh! Brotherly hug?" Dagur hugged him as Hiccup let out a noise of pain at how strong the hug was. Snotlout came over to you.
"Hiccup hasn't even chosen a best man? Ugh! That's weird, right?" You growled a little and elbowed him straight in the gut. "Ow!" You all suddenly heard a loud roar.
"Oh, hey it's the Armorwing. Quick. Everyone hide!" Hiccup instructed as you all hurried into the bushes. The Armorwing landed and instantly took an old sword and melted it onto it's back.
"It's working, Hiccup!" Fishlegs said happily. You took your chance.
"Hiccup?"
"Yeah?"
"So, um, have you noticed anything...different? Like, as in something looks different to you? Hm?" You hinted. His eyes widened.
"Yes! How could I miss that?" You smiled, relieved. "Right in front of my face the whole time. A Dragon Eye lens! The Armorwing has a Dragon Eye lens on it." You frowned, your heart sinking further as you turned around and spotted it too.
"I can't believe it! A Dragon Eye lens on a dragon? How did you see it, Hiccup, hidden in all that metal?" Fishlegs asked.
"Of course he did. Hiccup would never miss something as important as that." You said, your own words mocking you more than they were trying to mock him.
"Don't you die before my wedding," Dagur said to him. You rolled your eyes at his words. I'M the one who should be saying that, for Thor's sake!
Hiccup went over to the dragon. Even though you were mad at him, you were still worried about his safety. Things seemed to be going well at first. Then, fireballs were everywhere! You looked up, spotting two Dragon Flyers attacking Hiccup and the Armorwing. Toothless saved Hiccup and the Armorwing ran off.
"To the air, guys!" You ordered. They followed you as you called out, "Flyers! Coming in hot!"
You all worked together, trying to stop them from getting away, but they were able to keep you all at bay long enough to open an escape window. They took off and you sighed, frustrated about more than one thing now. Snotlout, however, took their retreat a bit differently.
"Yeah! Keep flying, suckers! Me and Hooky chased 'em off, guys. Hookfang! Snotlout! Oy, oy, oy!" You were even more annoyed now.
"No, you didn't. They were scouts. They left to go report in." You told him.
"You say scouts, I say deadly assassins. Who's to say who's right?" Snotlout replied.
"(Y/n)'s right." Hiccup said, coming up on his other side. First thing you've said right all day. You thought, still annoyed with him too.
"Shut up, Hiccup." Snotlout shot back.
"Look, as soon as Krogan finds out we're here, he'll be coming to find out why we're here. We have to find the Armorwing and get the dragon lens off him before they get here." While you weren't happy about it, you took the distraction anyway, hoping it would at least get you to stop thinking about it.
"Hiccup's right. Let's get moving!" You called, hurrying off ahead. You all landed together once you got closer. You were still in the lead...by yourself.
"The Armorwing has to be here somewhere," Fishlegs stated. You weren't even really listening to him. Your mind was still clouded and it was only making it harder and harder for you to care about then lens or even focus on the entire situation.
Hiccup suddenly came up beside you. You paid no mind to him. You were honestly at the point of putting him in the dog house. I mean, how oblivious could he be? Or did he just not care? Those questions made you even angrier at him. You almost didn't want him there now.
"So a-anything you want to...talk about?" He asked, noticing the tension know that he was closer. You weren't going to let him off the hook so easy.
"I don't know. Is there?" You said, giving him a hint that you were mad. He flinched, picking up on that hint right away. Even the others noticed that one.
"See that? Classic passive-aggressive move." Dagur said
"He should quit now before it's too late." Snotlout agreed. Those two were not helping each of their own cases either.
"Look, if you don't tell me what's wrong, (Y/n), how am I supposed to help?" Hiccup asked. You growled angrily. NOW he wants to help!?
"And it's too late." Snotlout said.
"Hiccup, I've had the necklace out all day! I tried to get you to see it but even when I said something you spotted a lens on a dragon that was off in a field rather than spotting something that was two feet in front of you!" He flinched, nervous now as he realized what he'd done wrong.
"Uh, oh, hey! Wow. No, it looks-It looks great!" You crossed your arms.
"Now you say it looks great? Wow, it's only been a few hours since I pulled it out." You spat back bitterly.
"Uh...no, no. I mean, yes. Well, it does- It does look great on you, but- What would you like me to say?"
"I wanted you to say something earlier." You said. "In fact, I actually wanted you to say something days ago when I was at your hut! I wanted to ask if you wanted to do something together, but instead you sent me to Berk without even realizing something was wrong! And on top of that, you asked for Jahlin and his team rather than my family who have been dragon riders just as long as us! I mean, are you serious!?"
"O-okay, so maybe sending you to Berk and asking for Jahlin instead of the others wasn't my best idea. But (Y/n), just because I didn't notice the necklace right away doesn't mean I don't care. I don't know. When it comes to accessories, I'm not the noticing type." Your eyes widened. Did he even realize what he just said?
"Oh, so you never noticed or cared about the bracelet I gave you that I made myself? Because it's an accessory?" You hissed. Your feelings were really hurt by that one. Does he not actually like it? I worked on it for weeks... I did everything in my power to make it perfect for him...and now he's saying he doesn't notice things like that?
"Oh...that was a bad move..." Snotlout said to Dagur in the background. Hiccup looked away, looking guilty and clearly regretting what he just said.
"(Y/n), I didn't mean-"
"I guess I did the wrong gift after all..."
"I noticed the necklace right away. In fact, I was the one who said to improve it. Also, you can so tell so much hard work went into that bracelet. Never too late to join Team Jorgenson." You glared death itself at Snotlout.
"Okay, yeah, you know...yeah, just an option." He backed off.
"Dagur and Mala have known each other a few months, and they can't stand to be apart. We've known each other our whole lives, Hiccup, and I've never felt further away from you." You said, taking off the necklace and tossing it back to him as you stormed ahead with Nightshade. You also went ahead to hide the tears in your eyes.
Of course, the Armorwing showed up and you gladly took the distraction now. You didn't want anything to do with Hiccup for the rest of the day. You hopped on Nightshade and hurried over, not even caring if the others were following.
"Look, we have to get the lens. If we don't, Johann, Viggo and Krogan will hunt down the Armorwing until they have it." The Armorwing snapped at Hiccup angrily. "Aah!" He backed off, giving the dragon some space.
"And how exactly are we supposed to do that?" Snotlout asked.
"Oh, Snothat." Dagur laughed, grabbing his helmet.
"You know, I thought we were past that! My name- Oh, I get it. It's 'cause I'm wearing a hat."
"I know a thing or two about winning over people that want me dead. Well, Mala, Heather, uh, Savage, Alvin... Ooh, that merchant from the Northern Market... most of the Archipelago, really." He showed the helmet to the Armorwing. "I have a gift for you~" It smacked the helmet away and fired at him before retreating.
"Come on, guys. We can't let him get away." You all chased after the dragon, dodging past trees to get to it. After trying to corner it, it took to the clouds. Hiccup went after it. You all followed and saw Krogan. Great.
"When my scouts told me you were chasing an Armorwing, I was pretty sure I knew why, but I didn't expect you to deliver the dragon and lens right to me. Thank you." Toothless and Nightshade got ready to fire. "Careful, dragons, you don't want to hit the poor Armorwing." You glared at Krogan, already pissed off enough to start wanting blood. The others arrived right on time.
"Ooh-hoo-hoo-hoo-hoo-hoo-hoo! Who doesn't love a good face-off?" Dagur said excitedly. More Dragon Flyers showed up next to Krogan.
"You have friends. I have friends. The difference is, I don't care if mine live or die. Now!" He called to his men. The battle had begun.
"Watch out for the Armorwing!" Hiccup called. You all fought together and the Armorwing tossed heated up metal at the Signetails.
"The Armorwing has another defensive move! What an amazing dragon!" Fishlegs stated.
"Big deal. It tosses metal. So can Gobber. Aah!" Snotlout yelped as he had to dodge one himself. You saw that it's back was exposed.
"Hiccup, the Armorwing!" Fishlegs called.
"I know. It's a powerful move, but it leaves him vulnerable." Krogan's dragon fired and it hit the Armorwing's weak spot.
"He's hit!" You shouted. The Armorwing crashed down on the island.
"Fall back!
