Laurens POV:

AT THE BALL

I CANNOT believe we made it! Since it's fancy, Laff is upper class, so he got let in, and Alex got let in because he recently got a job with Washington. Herc got let in after he begged his mentor for some money, so he could get let in. (His mentor gave in.) So Herc got let in, but I didn't have much money. I had to beg the person letting everyone in to get in. They refused multiple times, and I almost gave up. Lafayette saw my struggling, so he came over and helped. He sighed and shook his head, amused. What's so funny? I'm struggling here. I thought, pouting on the inside. I was embarrassed that I needed help.

"He's... with me." Lafayette laughed. The person reluctantly let me in. Oof.

"You could have just called me over," Laff said, full of amusement.

"I-I didn't need help!" I rebutted.

"Oh...surrreeee." Laff said jokingly.

"Ugh... whatever." I was embarrassed.

We walked over to where Alex, Burr, and Herc were sitting. We talked for a while, and then we saw something that got all of our attention. Are those the... Schuyler sisters! I stood up, as did Alex.

"The rumors were true..." I said, awestruck. Then Alex did the strangest thing. He walked over to Angelica! What is he doing?! ...Nope, I'm not jealous. He started talking to her. Her expression at first was annoyed, then it went to curious, then to happy. Is she... blushing? No... don't take Alex... wait what? Since when was I jealous of Alex's love life? Well... I guess he didn't have one before. I... don't like him do I? No! I'm happy for him. Frick I'm blushing, aren't I? Before I could tell, Herc barged in.

"Ooooooh, John's jeallloouus! He's blushing!" He remarked slyly. I shoot back.

"No I'm not! And, who are you to tease? What about Laff over there? What's goin' on between you two?"

Herc blushed nervously. Laff looked over to us, confused.

"I heard my name!" He said in his thick French accent.

"Nothing!" Herc looked at me, as if saying, "Don't you dare." Triumph!

Alex walked back over to us, then Angelica went to her sister, Eliza.

"Guys! That went well! Not married, but well!" He claimed triumphantly.

"I saw. She blushed." I said awkwardly. I could tell he could sense hurt in my voice. His expression changed to an, "Oh! I forgot... I'm sorry. I made a mistake, didn't I?" look.

"I-" Herc, who didn't seem to notice the look, cut Alex off.

"Good job dude!"

"Th- thanks." Alex looked back at me with the same look, but with so much guilt in his eyes. Herc seemed to notice this time.

"I'm sorry, I-" Herc said, knowing he messed up. Alex cut him off.

"It's... fine." Alex walked away, sadly.

"Alex! Wait!" I called after him. I caught up to him.

"I'm sorry." he said guiltily.

"It's fine. You aren't bound to me!" I replied, with a fake smile. I'm losing him, aren't I? And he knew all this time I liked him. I didn't even know! Geez, he knows me more than I do. He looked back at me.

"Thanks." He smiled.

He'll be happy without me. I thought.

To be continued...
