Nightmare was staring at the door to his dorm, dreading the next time someone was going to open it. Dream and Nightmare's mother created a group chat and told them she was going to come see them today.
Nightmare did not want to see her.
Nim wasn't a bad mother to Dream, which is what Nightmare really cared about. She just wasn't a good mother to Nightmare. Not that anyone was overly nice to Nightmare, but Nim was... Nightmare squirmed. He let out a deep breath, and closed his eyes. It would be over by the end of the day. It's not like she was staying. And besides, she'd probably want to hang out with Dream more than Nightmare, so he didn't have to worry. He'd just have to say hi. He looked down at his hands and his face paled.
He still hadn't learned how to control it, but she was going to be such a bitch about it. He sighed and a knock sounded at the door. He would just have to say hi. It wouldn't be that bad.
"Come in." And he saw her. He smiled, though his insides were turning. "Hello m-"
"Hi." He made a face as if to say 'really?' "Oh, it's been too long, my dear." He cleared his throat.
"Have you... have you seen Dream yet?"
"Oh yes. Him and Cross are finally together. So, I'm gonna give them the day to... you know..." Nightmare's eyes went wide.
"Well, I actually have a lot of work to do, so..." She slumped down on his bed. Well... more like Error's bed. Error, thankfully, was out and about for today. She looked Nightmare up and down, and he mentally sighed, preparing himself. She gasped.
"Oh my lord! Your body! You're normal again!" He closed his eyes and nodded.
"Yeah-" Another knock sounded at the door. Confused, he opened it. Killer strolled in. Nightmare's eyes widened. Oh no.
"Hello Nighty. I just finished my stupid, boring classes, and I wanted to come say hi." He looked at Nim and his eyes widened. He gasped. "Are you Nim? The Nim? The one who gave birth to these two se-"
"Yes. She is. This is my mother. Mom, this is Killer, my-"
"I'm his wife." Nightmare rolled his eyes. But Nim seemed positively delighted.
"Oh Nighty Poo, you never told me you were married." Nightmare cleared his throat.
"I'm not. Killer is just like that." Killer put his hands on his hips. Nightmare could feel a growl in the back of his throat. But he shoved it down. "Well, like I said, I have a lot of work, so-" Nim tsked him.
"Oh, I'm sure that you can do it some other time. I would absolutely love to spend the day with my son and his wife. Wouldn't you dear?" She looked at Killer, and he got stars in his eyes.
"Oh, Nightmare, can we? You can find another time to do your work, right? I'll help you with it later." Killer was doing puppy eyes. Nightmare found out very quickly into their relationship that he couldn't say no to Killer when he was doing puppy eyes. He just couldn't. So he sighed.
"Fine. But you have to help me later." Killer jumped up in the air, exploding with excitement.
Nightmare wanted to fade away into the wind, and disappear from the face of the earth. He wanted to float off into the wind, and never again see the light of day. Nim laughed and Killer elbowed Nightmare.
"You never told me your mom was so funny." Nightmare tiredly smiled at him. It wasn't Killer's fault. Nim just had this... charm. She could say and do whatever she wanted, but she always hide it. She was bullying Nightmare, even now, but she wasn't openly mocking him. She was doing it secretly. Nightmare didn't blame Killer for not seeing it. It took Nightmare a really long time to see something was wrong.
"Did you know my Nighty Poo used to be bullied?" Killer looked confused.
"Nightmare? Bullied? I always thought he did the bullying." She laughed and shook her head. Nightmare wanted to mock her. But he wasn't far enough behind them.
"No, he was. It just recently stopped." Killer turned around to Nightmare.
"If anyone ever bullies you, let me know so I can slap them." Nightmare rolled his eyes, while Nim giggled.
"Killer, I am positively delighted to call you my daughter." Killer got stars in his eyes and batted them.
"Daw, thank you." Nightmare was starting to wonder if Nim thought Killer was actually a girl, or if she was just playing along with his "I'm his wife" act. Nightmare was behind them, so he openly mocked her.
"I am positively delighted to call you my daughter." He growled, but someone sprang up behind him. He startled and jumped.
"Oh, sorry Nightmare. I didn't mean to scare you." Nightmare sighed and saw it was just Dust.
"No. You're fine." Dust looked in front of them, and let out a low whistle.
"Is that your mom? Dang dude, I'm sorry. Dream was saying stuff about it, when I asked where you were. Oh my gosh, I hate when you ask people a simple question, and they use it to start a lecture. It's annoying. Anyway, you should say something. Killer wouldn't be like that. He'd believe you." Nightmare closed his eyes and sighed, before looking back at them.
"They just look so happy. He looks so happy. I don't want to dampen his mood. That would be a dick move." Dust shrugged and shoved his hands in his pockets.
"I mean, that's what I said. I was like 'oh Dust, don't say anything. You'll just ruin the mood.' But then you guys came along. You showed me that there are some people out there who really care. Who really try and want to help you. But they can't help you if you don't let them. She came to see you, not Killer. And he really likes you. He's not going to ignore or dismiss you." Nightmare sighed and looked at them, laughing. He looked back at Dust.
"Yeah. Yeah, I guess you're right. Anyway, why did you want to see me?" Dust's expression became mortified.
"Well, um, the eating thing is going on again. Not as bad as before, but you know, I've been eating less lately. Blue thought I should come and talk to you." Nightmare sighed again.
"Don't try eating too much. Just take it slowly. A little bit at a time. If that doesn't work, come back and tell me. I will fucking put you in a ED facility." Dust smiled.
"Okay mom. Talk to Killer, by the way." And Dust skipped off. Nightmare sighed, very loudly and very dramatically, before grumbling and walking up to them. Killer's face expression shifted into worry.
"Nightmare, is everything okay?" Nightmare closed his eyes and let out a breath.
"Can I talk to you?" He glanced at his mom, before looking back at Killer. "Alone?" Killer looked confused.
"...Sure..?" And they walked away from her. "What's up?" Nightmare looked to the side.
"You and my mom... seem to be getting along well." Killer's face still conveyed worry.
"Is... everything okay?" Nightmare huffed and crossed his arms.
"No. I didn't even want her to come, and I thought she was going to be hanging out with Dream all day. But noooo. She just wanted to come be around me so she could insult and mock and ridicule and belittle me allllllllll day. And now she's talking to you. And I think she actually thinks you're a girl, so you might wanna clear the air there. Next thing I know, you two will be off painting each other's nails and you'll forget all about me, just like she wants." Nightmare started panting, and Killer still looked worried.
"Nightmare, she's leaving today. I'm not. If you didn't want to be around her, you could've said no. I came to your dorm to hang out with you, not your mom." Nightmare crossed his arms.
"When you do your stupid puppy eyes, I can't say no to you." Killer's face went blank, before it broke out into an "aw". Nightmare's eyes widened. "No."
"You think I'm too cute to be told no."
"No." Killer laughed and leaned his head on Nightmare's shoulder.
"I'm not going anywhere, okay? I'm not going anywhere." Nightmare closed his eyes and sighed. "Besides, Dust and I already paint each other's nails." Nightmare rolled his eyes, but he was smiling.
"I think you might be my mom's new favorite person." Killer laughed.
"Yeah, I guess I am, aren't I?" Nightmare sighed. Killer got up and stood in front of Nightmare. "Come on. Let's go. It's gonna be okay, okay? You and me against the world." Nightmare grumbled, but took Killer's hands and stood up.
"Fine. But you're still annoying, and I still hate you." Killer smiled as he held Nightmare's hand and trotted back over to Nim.
"Hey boys. What did ya talk about?"
"A lot of things, actually. Like, painting nails and having se-"
"Nothing. We just talked about... stuff. Anyway, I do have work I should be doing, so..."
"Oh, you can run along and go ahead, me and Killer can hang out." Nightmare started to feel dread climbing up his insides when he looked at Killer. But Killer just gave him two thumbs up.
"You got this." He mouthed. Nightmare sighed and looked back at Nim.
"Killer was actually supposed to help me."
"Aw, you're a smart boy. I'm sure you can manage." Nightmare wanted to look at Killer again, but knew he had to do this himself.
"No. I've spent the majority of my life being pushed around by you, while you took everything and everyone from me. You are my mother. I am your son. But you cannot continue to push me around. Killer is my boyfriend. I'm glad the two of you are getting along, but I really do need to work." She stared at him blankly, and he started to crumble.
"Aw sugar, why didn't you just say so? If you don't want to hang out with me, that's alright." Her expression darkened. "I can hang out with your brother. And you can go back to ignoring your mother to your hearts content." Nightmare shrank back.
"Maybe he wouldn't ignore his mother if she didn't try to dictate every single aspect of his life." Nim shrugged and walked off.
"Whatever you want, sugar." Nightmare sighed as soon as she was gone. He turned to Killer, who smiled sweetly at him.
"See, it's alright. You did it. You're still alive. Just like with Dust. If you don't help yourself, no one else can help you." Nightmare sighed and looked at where his mother had wandered off to.
"Yeah. Yeah, you're right. Thank you. You always make me feel better. You're the best." He hugged Killer and Killer smiled and rested his head on Nightmare's shoulder. When they pulled away, Nightmare rubbed his eyes.
"I just want you to know though, I'm totally gonna start calling you Nighty Poo now." Nightmare groaned. Killer laughed.
"You know, Dust was right. You did have my back." Killer suddenly looked annoyed.
"You saw and talked to Dust? Are you fucking-"
Hello. That was fast. I updated really fast. Anyway, since y'all are having so much fun talking about Nim, I made her bully Nightmare. And since one of you said that in your AU Killer was Nim's favorite, I did that too. Happy reading!
