During my last week in the clinic, I already informed the dentists of my departure since I have to go to another place, far from my hometown, to continue studying Dentistry. I also knew that the two married dentists were alumni of the university I am in. They told me some tips and tricks and at the same time, I also told them the major improvements of the university.
In the middle of our talk, an adult patient named Lem, came into the office. When he came to the office, it was as if he was suffering from pain and he could not even talk properly. He was always placing his hand on his cheeks.
Upon careful examination, it was eventually found out that Lem had a severe dental issue. Lem had an infection that had spread to the root of her tooth, causing excruciating pain. It was a case that needed to be immediately tended to. Also, he was also struggling with misaligned teeth. With this, it is a challenge for all the specialists in the clinic in terms of accessing the affected tooth for treatment.
"Let us ask for the help of Dr. Alex," Dr. Susan said to Dr. Elmer.
"Great idea! Especially when she's also in the vicinity, we can contact her," Dr. Elmer seconded.
Dr. Leticia was away for another conference in another city so they had to consult a former colleague and one of their closest classmates in Dr. Elmer's previous school. Recognizing the complexity of Lem's case, they tapped the help of Dr. Alex, in hopes that orthodontic intervention could facilitate a more successful endodontic procedure.
Dr. Alex was more than willing to cooperate and since he is in the area, he immediately visited the clinic. Dr. Elmer, Dr. Susan and Dr. Eli, met and discussed the best course of action that would help resolve the case of Lem. With this, they decided on a joint approach that would address the issues at hand.
Dr. Alex would begin orthodontic treatment to align Lem's teeth, creating a better path for Dr. Elmer to access and treat the infected tooth. Lem, who was really nervous about the prospect of treatment, was reassured by the coordinated efforts of the dentists. I was carefully observing as I assisted them and with careful movements, they were able to collaborate well.
As Dr. Alex worked on aligning Emma's teeth, Dr. Elmer carefully treated the infected tooth, successfully saving it from extraction. The collaboration was a resounding success, and Lem's oral health improved significantly. His pain was alleviated, and he was on his way to produce a beautiful and healthy smile.
In my stay in the dental clinic, I realized that the dentists are all tied with the same objective of helping others recover their smile. The specialists, who collaborate and integrate their specialties, work hand in hand, to tend to the patients' dental needs. Dentists are like peas in the pod, with a unified goal of providing exemplary service.
And in my crash course here, I learned a lot. I can't wait to become one of them – to be the same peas in the pod, helping other people regain their genuine smiles.
With this, I can say that I am now ready for a face-to-face adventure for my classes. This is the diary of a studentist and stay tuned for my face-to-face classes journal entries!
