It was after one in the morning and he struggled to find his way in the darkness, "son of a bitch" he whispered as he nearly tripped over the laundry basket.
"Adam?" Kim asked groggily, "is that you?"
"Yea, Darlin', I'm sorry I didn't mean to wake you" he finally turned the light on, no longer trying to keep from waking her.
She sat up in the bed, "I talked to Helen she's freaking out" she had to talk her off the ledge, "any leads?"
He cocked his head to the side, "You know I can't discuss the case with you" he told her, we've been very busy though, like super busy" he winked, letting her know they had some irons in the fire. "You still want to send Anthony there?"
"I do, their elementary program is great and that building is on the other side of the campus" she explained, "it's a great school Adam"
He laughed, "It should be, damn we should get a discount or something sending them three kids" their monthly payment would skyrocket once Anthony was enrolled.
"Can I ask you something?" It had been her main focus the last day or so.
"You can ask me anything" he pulled her on top of him, "I missed you"
"What do you think about another baby?" She bit her fingernail nervously.
"You've been spending too much time with Drew" he told her.
A week had passed since Johnny had put Jim to work finding out all he could about his newest protege Declan, he poured creamer into his mug "tell me what you have" he said to Jim.
Jim tossed the file on his desk, "you aren't going to like it, not at all"
Johnny put his reading glasses on, "Son of a bitch" he slammed his fist on the table, causing some of the coffee to spill from the mug, "his uncle is a cop?"
"Intelligence" Jim said, "Shocked the kid was willing to sell"
Johnny ran his hand over his head, "Let's sit on this and see what we're dealing with, I think he enjoys the money more than he fears his uncle" at least that's what he was hoping anyway.
Declan no longer ran his 'business' from the cafeteria, once the autopsy on Jeff was released and they confirmed it was a drug related death the school had stepped up security and the teachers now how to take turns covering lunch periods in the cafeteria.
He conducted all his business near the baseball field and the little kids playground, it was pretty easy to go unnoticed out there.
All things considered he was feeling at ease, nothing seemed to be happening with figuring out who was selling at the school and Adam hadn't mentioned it to him. He was pretty sure he was in the clear and that Adam didn't suspect him at all.
Kim plopped on Annie's couch Drew already down for a nap, "Your brother is a jerk you know" she told her, he had dodged her question for over a week now and she was nervous to bring it back up.
Annie laughed, "What'd he do now?"
Kim sat on her feet, "I asked him what he thought about having another baby, and you know what he said?"
Annie shook her head, her hands in front of her, "I bet you're going to tell me"
"He said and I quote" she made air quotes "he said 'you're spending too much time with Drew' what the hell does that mean?"
Anthony finally speaking, his attention diverted from the movie he had been watching with Harper "that's a bad word Mommy, remember you told Uncle Sean it was"
"I'm sorry bud" she said sheepishly, he returned to the movie, "So tell me, what does your brother mean?"
Annie laughed, "I'm sorry but this is hysterical"
"I don't find it funny at all" Kim replied.
Annie couldn't believe what she was about to ask her sister in law, "Spare me the details but have you and my brother you know?" She asked, "did it?" feeling a little weird asking about her brother's sex life.
Kim could feel her cheeks turn red, "Uh, yea"
"I think that's your answer" she told her, "Adam is just being Adam"
"How is that an answer? Your brother wouldn't turn down sex even if he didn't want another baby" she told her knowing they didn't use any form of birth control, this time Annie's cheeks turning a bright red.
"Kim that's gross, I don't want to hear any more of this" she laughed, "just ask Adam again"
"You mean to tell me, we still have jack shit?" Hank asked rolling a stack of paper up in his hands, "you guys are fucking worthless, get back on the streets and get me something" he slammed the papers down on the desk, "I mean it!"
The room cleared out quickly, Jay and Adam taking off together "Sorry Halstead, I'm driving" Adam laughed.
"I'm glad you all enjoy this" he put his seatbelt on, "I think you're a worse driver than I am"
"Whatever" Adam laughed, "How's Lindsay and Tyler?" It had been awhile since they had gotten the kids together Tyler just a few months older than Harper the two got along wonderfully, Jay often joked the two would end up married.
Jay looked at Adam, "I'm dying to get this off my chest" they had talked about keeping it under wraps, Hank the only other person who knew at this point, "but you need to keep your mouth shut"
Adam nodded,"Does that apply to my wife?"
"You can tell her"
"Alright, what is it?"
Jay smiled, "Erin's pregnant, she's about five months along" he was relieved to finally say the words out loud, he felt as if he was going to burst when he couldn't tell everyone but Erin was nervous a few complications at the beginning of her pregnancy kept her from telling everyone.
"Congratulations, that's fantastic" he smiled, "I'm happy for you guys" he laughed, "you know Kim asked me about having another baby about a week ago" he told him.
"Yea? What'd you tell her?"
Adam parked the car, "that she was spending too much time with our nephew" they both got out and walked around the campus, Adam couldn't believe his son would soon be a student "I can't believe Anthony will be in kindergarten in just a few months"
Jay put his sunglasses on, "how much this place cost you?"
"Declan runs us nearly fifty grand a year, Charlie is just under forty and Anthony will be about thirty grand a year until sixth grade" he was shocked that numbers that large barely made a dent in Kim's trust fund. It took him awhile but he got over the insane amount of money she spent on the all of the children in their family, even Phil's kids whom they barely saw.
"Damn Ruzek, that's over a hundred grand just on school" he knew Kim was loaded but he never really grasped how loaded she actually was, "no wonder you're hesitant about another kid"
Adam stopped and faced him, "What makes you think that?"
"The fact you told your wife she was spending too much time with Annie's kid" Jay explained, "I'm pretty sure Kim might be thinking the same thing you know"
Adam looked at his feet, "You think so?"
Jay just smirked, "you're a stupid one Ruzek"
Laying in bed that night Adam watched Kim as she slept, he had gotten in late again and was disappointed to find Kim asleep. Jay's words still playing out in is head and he wanted to talk to Kim and let her know how he felt, he just didn't have the heart to wake her.
"You're up late" Jay said as he sat next to Erin in the living room, "couldn't sleep?"
Erin ran her hand down his thigh, "No, Tyler had a nightmare earlier and he's now asleep in our bed" she told him, unable to get comfortable with Tyler in the bed, she couldn't take another foot to her head or her back.
"Say no more" he laughed, knowing how their son slept, "Don't be mad, but I told Ruzek about this one" his hand landing on her belly bump that had just started to become apparent.
Erin laughed, "Well, all of Chicago will know soon" though she knew it just was matter of time, soon it would be blatantly obvious. "Don't worry it's fine"
"Are we really gonna crash on this couch?"
Erin stood, "No, you're going to put Tyler in his room and we are taking back our bed" she laughed following him upstairs.
Charlie watched Declan down the pills, "what are those?" She asked him, he always seemed to be taking them.
Declan glared at her, "medicine for my knee" he told her, "why don't you mind your business"
"Shut up!" She told him, "Trey's my favorite brother you know" she stuck her tongue out at him.
"Good for Trey" he barked, shoving her on his way out.
"I'm telling Mommy!"
"Of course you are you little shit" he grabbed his back pack from the table and stormed out.
"Good Morning, Declan" Johnny said, taking the envelope from him, "you're quite the businessman"
Declan smiled, "yeah, well I like having cash" he spent the majority of his young life in the lap of luxury and this was as close as he was going to get these days.
Johnny handed him a thousand dollars, "Out of curiosity, how's your family?"
Confusion on Declan's face, "Fine, why?"
Johnny shook his head, "No reason really, just making conversation"
