"How bad is it?" Kim asked Adam.
He helped Harper with a puzzle, "it's bad, I'm almost puked when I saw his knee it was nasty" he told her, "they tossed the little fucker out of the game" he was still angry.
"Fucker?" Harper repeated clear as bell.
Kim threw her hands up, "see? You need to watch your mouth they repeat everything you say." She told him, "and of course that's the word she can say clearly" laughing at the irony.
"Sorry, it just infuriated me" he told her, "the look on his face killed me, he's devastated"
"How long is he out for?"
Adam put the last piece in the puzzle, "I'd guess the rest of the season, surgery is still a possibility"
If he hadn't known better Declan would swear he was floating, his body felt light and he didn't have a care in the world.
Two weeks had passed since Declan's injury no longer on crutches but wore a bulky knee brace, thankfully surgery wasn't required after all but he was done for the season.
He had been moving product left and right, he sat at his table in the cafeteria as his 'customers' made their selections. It was a giant fuck you to the school, he laughed at their 'zero tolerance' policy on drugs they didn't have clue that he was selling thousands of dollars worth of prescription pills, ecstasy, and other illicit drugs.
Jeff took the seat to Declan's right, "just so you know, I gave your name to a friend from Bridgeport High" he slid his money across the table and took the bag from Declan, "he's looking for oxy"
"I have it" he told him, "thanks for the referral" he pulled a pill from his back pack, "consider this a thank you"
He took the pill and immediately swallowed it, not even bothering to chase it with a drink, "Sorry 'bout the knee, the team is shit without you" the lacrosse team having lost the four games they played since Declan's injury.
Declan grinned, "It's not that bad, gave me a chance to give my inventory a try" he knew he wouldn't be drug tested if he wasn't playing, it was what kept him from trying drugs in the past but none of that mattered now.
Voight wanted to pound his head on the desk, the commander was breathing down his neck.
"Dawson!" He called "in here for a minute"
Antonio went to the door, "what do you need?"
Voight laughed, "you don't want the truth on that one" he motioned for Antonio to close the door, "We need to catch a break on this drug shit, another kid's dead. This one is a 17 year old girl from Harvey, seems she took a handful of oxy"
Antonio leaned back in the chair, "Shit, it just keeps getting worse, Diego's school is even dealing with it"
"I think eighty percent of the schools in Chicago are caught up in this, we need to find out who these kids are buying from"
They both left his office and went into the bullpen, Mouse already setting the whiteboard up.
Adam and Jay huddled together at Jay's desk, "this is crazy, the amount of schools involved in this blows my mind"
Adam nodded, "it's wild, I'm glad Kim's niece and nephew go to private school, they seem to be the only schools not touched by this mess"
"I guess, even if the tuition is insane huh?" Jay asked him.
Adam nodded, "Yea, but it's worth it"
Jeff was beginning to feel sick, his heart raced and his vision blurry. He braced himself against the wall, his palms sweaty and he felt cold. He swore he could hear the whooshing sound of his blood running through his veins.
"Jeff? Are you okay?" He could hear a voice ask him, he tried to respond but his tongue felt thick and his mouth dry.
Kelly knew it was bad, "Help! Something is wrong with Jeff" she yelled, she checked both ends of the hallway. The bell had rung a few minutes ago, she watched as Jeff fell to the ground his whole body shaking and a white foam coming from his mouth.
She took off for the closest classroom, banging on the door.
"Where's the fire?" The teacher asked her.
"It's Jeff Wilkins, he's sick" she spit out, already headed back towards him.
Mr.Long poked his head into the hallway, he could see Jeff convulsing on the floor, "someone call 911" he ordered before following Kelly.
As he got closer he made the realization that it was too late, that Jeff was gone.
Kevin hung up the phone, "Sarge, we got another one" he told him, "This time at The Lawton Academy" he told him, "kid's dead, they think it's drug related. Kid was 18"
Jay looked at the name Kevin had written on the board, "I think that's where Ruzek's nephew goes, it's a pretty penny to send a kid there"
Adam came back upstairs, "Ruzek? The Lawton Academy, that's your nephew's school, yeah?" Jay asked, checking his phone a message from Erin just coming in.
"Yea, why?"
"We got a dead kid, died in the hallway" Kevin told him, "initial thoughts are it's a drug overdose"
"Shit, are we finally getting this case?" Adam asked, it had belonged to narcotics but it was beginning to spread out to all units.
"Yea, they called us in on it this morning" Voight told him checking his notes, "Ruzek, you and Roman head to Harvey. Atwater and Halstead you two hit up The Lawton Academy"
Declan waited in the parking lot for Johnny to arrive, he had called him as soon as he had heard about Jeff, classes had been cancelled for the rest of the day and everyone had been sent home.
Johnny leaned over and opened the passenger door, "Get in, we can't talk here"
Declan tossed his backpack on the back seat, "this is bad" he told him, just seconds away from a full blown panic attack, "he took a pill just before he died"
Johnny drive towards his office, Declan's reaction shocked him "I thought you had the stones for this kid?"
"I do, it's just freaking me out a little" he admitted, "you think the police will go to the school?" he knew his uncle could possibly be on the case and that scared the shit out of him.
"I'm sure they will" Johnny parked the car, "you just need to keep it together and keep your head down. It will all blow over" he told him, "let's put a freeze on sales for the next few days"
"Got it"
"My goodness, this baby is so sweet" Kim said as she rocked Drew, "makes me want another one" she was only half joking.
Annie laughed, "you can borrow him whenever you want!" She offered, "he really is the best, I never thought I could love someone as much as I love him"
Kim smiled at her "I told you so"
"Have you started planning Anthony's birthday party yet?" She asked, "what does he want?"
"It'd be easier for me to tell you what he doesn't want" she laughed, "we've started planning it,that boy has changed his mind numerous times on what kind of party he wants"
"Sounds like someone else I know" Annie remarked on Kim's constant indecision.
"Funny, you Ruzeks think you're comedians don't you?" Kim sorted Harper's clothes, "it's too bad Drew wasn't a girl I have a ton of hand me downs"
"Maybe you and my lovely brother should have another one"
Jay and Kevin felt their jaws drop when they arrived on campus of The Lawton Academy, the field surrounded by a black wrought iron fence, two columns with eagles perched atop them at the gate, "Shit, this place is sick" Kevin commented, "Ruzek ever tell you how much this place costs?"
"He didn't but I don't think our paychecks combined would be enough" he told him, "let's go find the principal"
As they entered the building a security guard approached them, "Can I help you?" He asked them a clipboard in his hands.
"Yea, I'm Detective Halstead" he pointed to Kevin "he's Patrolman Atwater, we need to talk to Principal Baker, he around?"
"Do you have an appointment?"
"Yea, it's my badge. Where's his office?" Jay asked his patience minimal.
The security guard glanced down the hallway, "Third door on the right" he pointed down the hallway, "as you can imagine he's a little frazzled"
"I bet" Kevin said as they took off down the hall.
Jay rapped his knuckles on the open door, "CPD Intelligence, we have a few questions for you"
Principal Baker stood up, adjusting his necktie, "Of course, officers come on in, you'll have to forgive me it's been a difficult morning" he removed his glasses and rubbed his eyes, "what can I do for you?"
"Tell us about the victim" Jay said checking the notepad "Jeff Wilkins, what was he like?"
Principal Baker put his glasses back on and leaned back in his chair, Jeff's records opened on his desk, he slid it towards Kevin and Jay, "He was a troubled boy, he was in that chair a lot" he pointed the chair Kevin sat in, "His father is some big wig at a fortune five hundred company but didn't have much to do with Jeff, just signed the tuition checks every month"
"What about his mother?"
"She died when he was a little boy, I think he was eight at the time"
"We won't know until the autopsy comes back, but the paramedics suspect a drug overdose, that a possibility?"
"With Jeff? Absolutely" he told them, "he's been caught with pot a few times, a couple of suspensions too"
Jay took notes, "This school have a drug problem?"
He brought his hands to cover face, "I don't know. You'd think with the student body we have we wouldn't, but I really don't know"
Kevin smirked, "your student body has the cash flow to fund a pretty decent drug operation, you haven't heard anything at all?"
"I haven't, you will be the first to know if that changes" he stood to shake their hands "I have to get going, thank you for your help"
Kevin and Jay made their way to car, "you think he's being honest?" Kevin asked climbing in the drivers seat.
Jay laughed "this is bullshit you know, no one ever let's me drive" he remarked, "what's up with that?"
"Your wife says you're a shit driver and that I should never let you drive" he laughed, "now answer my question"
"I don't know, he was hard to read" Jay told him. "I wonder if Ruzek has had any interaction with him"
"If he hasn't I know Kim has, this has to be the school she's sending Anthony to in the fall" Kevin told him, she had told him about at basketball practice the previous night.
"Must be nice" Jay remarked.
Johnny couldn't shake the feeling that something was up with Declan, it was more than the kid dying, he seemed far too concerned with the police and what they would be doing.
He tapped his pen on the desk, "Hey Jimmy, get in here"
"What's up Boss?"
He tossed the pen down, "do me a favor find out what you can about that Declan kid" he thought for a minute "pretty sure his last name is Burgess, something might be off with him"
Helen wrapped her arms around the kids when they finally arrived home, "Oh my gosh, I can't believe it" she told them, "Declan, are you alright? Did you know him?"
He put his bag on the floor, "Not really, he was a pot head didn't really run with the same crew" he lied, feeling sick to his stomach. It was only a matter of time before the CPD figured a dealer was at the Lawton Academy.
"Are you okay?" She asked him again, "is it your knee?"
He nodded, "yea, I'm gonna take some aspirin and try and go to sleep" he wasn't totally lying, the aspirin was really oxy but the end result would be the same.
