"Toshiro!" a little girl's voice rang out. The boy turned around and watched as a girl with orange hair and blue eyes ran towards him, waving.

"Hoshi, what are you doing?" Toshiro asked.

The girl shrugged, giving Toshiro a big smile. "Nothing, what are you doing?"

"Going to get Jelly Beans for Granny and me."

"I'll come with you!" They walked down the road together, side-by-side. "How's you're Granny doing anyway?"

"She's getting thinner," Toshiro said sadly.

"Cheer up! She'll get better in no time, I know it!"

The boy couldn't help but grin. That's the best thing about Hoshi, her smile. It's intoxicating. They came to the store and Toshiro approached the counter, while Hoshi stood off to the side, admiring a black butterfly. "Here's your change," the owner said.

Toshiro put out his hand, but the owner hesitated before dropping it onto the counter, and turned away. Toshiro froze, trying to make it look like it wasn't a big deal as he picked up the change. This happened often. Suddenly something shot through the air, slamming into the owner's back. He cried out in surprise, and came crashing to the ground.

"What the heck is wrong with you?" Hoshi yelled, standing on top of the counter, hands on her hips. She glared at the cowering owner. "Why can't you give Toshiro change like a normal customer? What's the matter, does he have cooties?"

"Why you-!"

"She's right, you know," a voice came from behind, cutting off the man. Toshiro turned to get a face full of breast, before bouncing off them and crashing into the floor. A young busty woman in a black kimono stood in front of them, zanpakuto strapped to her side with orange hair. "Why are you treating this boy so differently? What's your problem?"

"I-I-I'm sorry, miss," the owner stammered. Hoshi huffed, jumping off the counter. She scooped up the Jelly Beans as the woman picked up Toshiro by the back of his shirt.

"Are you okay?" the woman asked. "Stop crying."

"I'm not crying!" Toshiro exclaimed, holding his hurting head. He slapped the woman's hand away, grabbed Hoshi by the arm and they ran away.

"Hey, wait-!" the woman called, but they were already gone.

"You know I think that woman wanted to speak with you," Hoshi said when they were halfway home.

Toshiro shrugged in annoyance. "What do I care?"

"Suit yourself!" Hoshi said, popping a Jelly Bean in her mouth. "See you later! I'll be sure to bring watermelon over tomorrow from my garden!"

Toshiro's ears perked up at the sound of watermelon. "I'm looking forward to it."

100 Years Later

"Captain!" Rangiku's voice sang as she walked through the door to the office. Toshiro sighed heavily. This woman who had stood up for him so many years ago acted like such a child it was a wonder how she was even older than him.

"What is it, Rangiku?" Toshiro asked in annoyance.

"Did you hear? Squad Nine got a new Third Seat."

"I remember it being mentioned at the Captains' meeting, but why should I care?"

"Aw, Captain, you're no fun! She's so cute too!"

"I don't have time for this, Rangiku, and neither do you. You have paperwork, and you're not getting out of it today."

"Aw, Captain," the woman pouted, as she sat at her desk. "I was hoping to show the new girl around."

"You can do that later."

It was two hours into doing paperwork when Rangiku asked, "Captain, do you remember the first time we met?"

"Yes, why?" Toshiro asked, not knowing where this was going.

"Who was that girl with you that day?"

It had been years since Toshiro had seen his childhood friend. His first reason was that he entered the Academy shortly after meeting Rangiku. Second, he was constantly studying and was barely ever able to visit Hoshi. Third, upon graduating Toshiro went to the Seireitei, after Granny died. When Toshiro went to visit Hoshi after four months of being in the Thirteenth Court Guard Squads, the girl had moved and no one knew where she went.

"Her name was Hoshi Kudo," Toshiro answered, remembering the day he found her house empty. The feeling made him feel the same way. "Why?"

"What did she look like?"

"Orange hair and blue eyes, again, why?"

Rangiku stared at her Captain before jumping out of her seat. "I'll be right back!"

"Rangiku-!" Toshiro shouted, but the woman was already gone. Toshiro grumbled in annoyance, scribbling his name on some more documents. Most likely she wasn't coming back so he had more work to look forward to tonight.

Twenty minutes later a loud commotion was heard outside the office doors. "But Rangiku-!"

"No buts!" the woman interrupted. "You're Lieutenant gave me permission to take you away for as long as I liked!"

"I have paperwork and errands to run though!" the girl complained.

"This will only take a few minutes!" The office door opened and Rangiku walked in, pulling a girl in tow. "Oh Captain, you have a visitor!" the Lieutenant sang.

"Rangiku," Toshiro spoke through his teeth, gripping his pen tightly. The woman pulled the girl forward, making her trip over her own feet. Their guest came crashing to the ground face first. "Rangiku!" the Captain exclaimed, rushing around the desk.

The Soul Reaper chuckled to herself, stepping back as Toshiro looked down at the fallen girl. "Owie..." she moaned.

"You'll have to excuse my Lieutenant," Toshiro mumbled, helping the female to her feet.

"I'm alright," the girl mumbled, putting a hand over her face, trying to rub away the soreness.

"Ran-" The Lieutenant was missing in action. "RANGIKU!" Toshiro yelled, making the Squad Ten grounds shake with force. The girl squeaked, jumping away in surprise. "Sorry," Toshiro mumbled, looking away.

The girl was silent, and the young man thought that he had scared her off. He looked back over and was about to apologize, but froze on the spot. "Hoshi?" Toshiro whispered.

The orange haired, blue-eyed girl looked back at the Captain with just as much shock. Suddenly a big grin stretched across her face and the girl lunged forward, tackling him to the ground in a hug. "Toshiro!" Hoshi exclaimed, glomping the taken off guard Captain.

Hoshi's eyes then went wide and she quickly jumped off. "Sorry!" she exclaimed, holding her hands up. "Higher rank than I am, sorry, I forgot myself!"

"I-It's okay," Toshiro stammered, standing up. He fixed himself before looking at his friend again. "How...? How are you here?"

Hoshi scratched the back of her head nervously. "I guess I have some explaining to do, huh?"

Turned out the Soul Reaper was still in the Rukongai when Toshiro left to take a position in the Thirteenth Court Guard Squad. However, things turned bad in their District and Hoshi had no choice but to leave unannounced due to bandits raiding the area. After that she was constantly on the move and never was able to give Toshiro a message due to not having an address. Six years ago she entered the Academy and was given a position as a Third Seat for the Ninth Squad.

"I didn't know what Division you were in or even if you were here or in the World of the Living. Who knew you'd be a Captain, Toshiro?"

"Who knew you'd be a Third Seat the next Squad over."

Hoshi smiled.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------

A half a year passed since that day. It was winter now, Toshiro's favorite season. There was a blizzard going on outside, making the visibility almost impossible. However, someone was brave enough to weather the storm. The office doors opened and a snow covered, shivering Hoshi entered.

"Man it is really coming down out there!" she exclaimed, shaking the snow off. Hoshi tugged off her beanie, hanging it on the rack by the door, before pulling off the gloves, breathing on her hands to warm them up.

"Are you crazy?" Toshiro asked. "It's a blizzard out there. You're gonna make yourself sick."

Hoshi smiled, taking a seat on the couch, wrapping herself in the blanket. She snuggled into the warm sheet. Her cheeks and nose were rosy from the cold outside. "You're brave enough to walk through it," she stated.

Toshiro rolled his eyes, getting up from his desk. "That's because I have an ice zanpakuto." He poured a cup of tea for each of them before walking over. The Third Seat smiled, gladly taking the warm cup.

"Thanks, Captain."

"Your welcome," Toshiro mumbled, taking a seat across from his friend. They sipped their tea quietly before the young man asked, "Are you done for the day?"

"Yeah, the Lieutenant gave us the rest of the day off. Lot of people have a cold, so he wanted all of us to get a lot of rest."

"Then what are you doing here?" Toshiro asked, cocking an eyebrow.

Hoshi shrugged. "I'm not tired yet. Anyway, do you need help with paperwork?"

The Captain breathed a sigh of relief. "That would be great."

Hoshi worked on the couch till the last paper was signed. Then she lied down and fell asleep. Toshiro looked over at the couch a few minutes later seeing the work done and Hoshi asleep. It made him smile.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------

Three days later Hoshi was frustrated. The blizzard had stopped, leaving a thick layer of snow on the ground, but Toshiro had been acting weird around her and she couldn't figure out why. So the young Shinigami went over every worse case scenario as to why Toshiro would be acting so weird, but couldn't think of one.

It's really bugging me... Hoshi thought. Why is Toshiro acting so weird? Is he mad at me? What did I do wrong?

"Augh! This is ticking me off!" Hoshi exclaimed out loud.

"What is?"

Hoshi turned around and watched Rangiku walk down the hall towards her. "Oh, hi, Lieutenant."

"How many times do I have to tell you to call me Rangiku?"

"Sorry, Rangiku."

"So, what's on your mind?"

"It's your Captain. He's driving me insane! He ignores me, acts awkward around me, and always says he's too busy now! He's making me so angry!"

Rangiku laughed. "That's just my Captain."

"He's never acted like this before, what's wrong?"

"You should ask him."

"He doesn't even talk to me lately."

"Then confront him about it. That's the only way you're going to get an answer." Rangiku had a point so Hoshi walked off towards the Tenth Division, while the woman went in search of Shuuhei for a drinking partner.

Hoshi found the Captain walking down the hall, his back to her. The Soul Reaper used flash step, tackling the young man off the walkway and into the snow. "What the hell!" he exclaimed. However, then he saw Hoshi hovering above him, holding him in place. "Hoshi? What are you-?"

"What the heck is wrong with you?" Hoshi exclaimed. "You've been ignoring me for days. What the hell?"

Toshiro's eyes widened. Hoshi never cursed and when she did that meant that she was pissed! "Nothing," Toshiro grumbled, looking away. He tried to sit up, but the young woman grabbed his shoulders, forcing the Captain back into the snow.

"Nothing my ass!"

Toshiro was stunned, however, it was replaced with annoyance. He gripped Hoshi's upper arms, turning them over so he was on top. "It's nothing!" he shouted back.

The Third Seat flipped them back over. "It is something!" she shouted back.

Flip. "Nothing!"

Flip. "Something!"

Flip. "Nothing!"

Flip. "Something!"

Flip. "Damn it, Hoshi!"

Flip. "What?"

Flip. "Just let it go!"

Flip. "No!"

Flip. "Yes!"

Flip. "Tell me what's going on!"

Flip. "It's nothing important!"

Flip. "Yes it is!"

Flip. The two Shinigamis' lay in the snow, Toshiro on top, and both out of breath from their yelling match. They were covered in snow, and neither were letting go. They glared at each other. "I'm not letting go until you tell me what's wrong," Hoshi finally spoke up, her voice calmer.

"Hoshi-"

"Toshiro," she spoke in a warning.

The Captain sighed. "It's not important really. I'm sorry I was ignoring you. Work has just been busy."

"Bull." Her grip on him tightened. "Tell me, right here and now what's on your mind."

Toshiro looked the young woman in the eyes, knowing she was never going to let this go. Seeing there was no way around it the young man bet down and lightly kissed his friend's lips. Hoshi's eyes widened, grip loosening on Toshiro's sleeves from the shock. The Captain pulled away. "See, I told you it wasn't important..."

Toshiro began to get up when Hoshi grabbed his sleeves once again, pulling him down. Her lips met the Captain's in a passionate kiss, and Toshiro quickly returned the gesture. Arms wrapped around her waist, pulling them closer, while Hoshi's arms wrapped around his neck. When they broke for air both of their cheeks were flushed pink from the cold and the kiss.

"Because I like you, Hoshi, a lot," Toshiro whispered against her lips as their foreheads pressed against each other.

Hoshi smiled. "Good," she said back, pecking his lips. "Because I like you too, Toshiro." Hoshi then flipped them around, pushing the Captain back into the snow. "Can't catch me!" she exclaimed, rushing off.

Toshiro sat there stunned for a few seconds before sitting up straight, smirking devilishly. "Oh, you're gonna get it," he stated and rushed off.

Hoshi's laugh echoed through the air as she led the Captain on a wild, playful chase around the Divisions. When Toshiro finally caught up to her he tackled the Third Seat to the ground, turning her over before planting a kiss on her lips again. Hoshi smiled, before he broke it. "Aw, you caught me," she pouted playfully.

"So, what's my prize?" Toshiro asked with a smirk.
