Shuuhei sat alone in his hospital bed, bandages wrapping his face, only leaving one gap for him to see out of his left eye. There were also two smaller gaps for his nose and mouth. He sighed loudly at the silence. His two friends were dead because of a Hollow, because of his carelessness, he added more to himself. Shuuhei blamed himself that Kanisawa and Aoga had been ripped to pieces. He could not protect them. Heck, the young man nearly lost his own life. A fear ran through his mind at the thought of having the position he was destined to take, once he became a full Soul Reaper, stripped from him.

The young man was so lost in thought that he didn't even realize the door to his room open. "Hey, Mr. Doom and Gloom," the voice startled him. "Why the long face? When the doctors said they gave you some pain killers I thought you were going to be loopier."

A crooked grin formed on Shuuhei's lips as his eye landed on the young woman in the doorway. In her hands was a small bouquet of flowers. "Hello, Val," Shuuhei greeted.

She smiled widely, her dark grey eyes lighting up. As Val walked in her dark purple hair, which was pulled back into a braid, swayed from the movement. Placing the vase on a bedside table she leaned against the wall, arms crossed over her chest. Her eyes roamed the beaten-up Shinigami, looking at the doctor's work.

"What?" Shuuhei asked after a few minutes of Val staring.

She smiled mischievously. "Well, don't you look mysterious under those bandages?"

Shuuhei was glad for them, seeing as that he felt his cheeks become hot. "Shut up," he mumbled, making her chuckle.

"Aw, did I make you blush?"

"N-No!" he protested. Val only grinned, brushing it off.

"Anyway, when did they say you're going to come back? The Academy is so boring without you!"

Shuuhei sighed, answering, "Two days... though I don't think I'll ever fully recover." He had turned his head away, refusing to look at the soul's expression.

She stood silent for a few seconds before puffing out her lip in a pout. Walking forward silently, Val flopped onto her back, chest up so her body was arching over Shuuhei's lap. The action startled him, eyes locking with hers. "You idiot," Val stated. "The Shuuhei I know wouldn't let something like this get to him."

"I just lost two friends, Val!" he yelled.

"Hey, I'm not saying that you shouldn't feel a sense of loss, that's natural. You're not the only one who lost them. However, the Shuuhei I know wouldn't let it get to him. Once fully healed and over the mourning process he would get up and go kick some Hollow butt, in honor of his friends." Shuuhei looked at Val stunned, which caused her to smile in response. "That's the Shuuhei I know."

The door opened, revealing a nurse. "Miss, visiting hours are over."

"Okay!" She got up, straightening her uniform. "I'll see you in two days, Shuuhei. With exams coming up today was the only day I could spare myself from my studies."

Shuuhei cracked a small smile as she left. "See you later, Val," he answered softly.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------

Val sat in her room, exams finally over. She breathed a sigh of relief, knowing that all of her tests went well. Now all that was left was to be assigned to a Squad and position in the Thirteen Court Guard Squads. Val started packing up her things, tomorrow being graduation.

She reached for a picture of Kanisawa, Aoga, Shuuhei, and herself at the beginning of their sixth year. A sad smile came to her lips, remembering the good times they had shared together. The picture was placed carefully into a bag. Val then grabbed the next framed picture with Shuuhei and her in it. He had his arm wrapped around Val's neck, giving the person taking the photo a thumb up. Val was laughing, one eye closed, the other looking over at Shuuhei.

Val laughed lightly at the sight, stuffing it too in a bag. A knock sounded at the door. "Coming!" she called, zipping up the now full sacks. "Shuuhei!" Val exclaimed, catching her friend in a hug upon opening the door.

He looked over her vacant room as he returned the gesture. "Jeez, packed already? I haven't even started."

They pulled away from each other, Val's hands resting on her hips. "Well you better, mister, because graduation is tomorrow, and we leave for the Inner Sector right after the ceremony."

Shuuhei chuckled, ruffling her hair. "I know, Val. Don't worry." Val grinned. "Any idea on where you might be placed?"

Val shrugged. "No clue. Guess I could end up anywhere. Though... I really hope I don't go to Squads Two, Eleven, and Twelve."

Shuuhei cocked an eyebrow. It looked kind of funny since some bandages still covered the right side of his face. "Why is that?"

"Well, you know me, I can't be stealthy to save my life." Shuuhei laughed; a true laugh that rang through the room at the mental picture he tried to create of his friend, trying to be sneaky. "Oh, shut up," she mumbled, but continued, "Squad Eleven is a little too rough for me and I don't want to deal with a bunch of pig-headed men chasing after me." Shuuhei nodded. He admitted to himself that if Val was placed in that Squad, he would always feel worried for her safety. "And Twelve, well, I heard the Captain was crazy. Not only that but I can't perform experiments without something going wrong."

Shuuhei's mind flashed back to fifth year when they had to take a science class together. They were in groups of two, mixing chemicals. However, halfway through the procedure the concoction of theirs exploded covering them in soot and smoke. "Not again," Val had groaned, seeing the teacher heading right for them, most likely to scold their foolishness. "I swear I read everything and double checked my measurements!" she protested, reading over her burnt book to see where she messed up.

Shuuhei broke out laughing knowing no matter what the young woman did to make something work it would just blow up in her face. The whole classes then joined in, the teacher shaking his head, knowing his scolding would be useless. "Oh, shut up!" Val exclaimed, an embarrassed blush on her cheeks. She playfully smacked Shuuhei's arm with her notebook as he tried wiping tears away from the corner of his eyes.

Shuuhei returned to the present, laughing his head off. Val cocked an eyebrow, wondering if her friend had gone crazy. "Yes, science class was always interesting with you around."

A blush rose to Val's cheeks. "Shut up," she grumbled. "I still can't believe you stayed my partner for all those years in that class. You're lucky I didn't kill you from everything that went wrong."

Shuuhei grinned. "I took my chances."

She sighed sighed. "Anyway, maybe I'll be placed in a Squad near the Ninth Division so I can see you more."

"Or maybe you'll be placed in the Division itself?"

Val snorted. "Please, with you going in the Captain won't look at anyone else." Shuuhei smiled sheepishly. Her eyes landed on his bandages. "How's your face?"

"Still twinges a bit at times, but better." Val stared at the bandages before grinning. "W-What?" Shuuhei questioned, seeing the look in her eyes.

"Well, you still look mysterious under those bandages." Shuuhei sweat dropped. "Seriously! Have you even noticed how all the girls now want to meet you because those bandages make you look... 'sexy', as they put it."

Shuuhei blushed. "W-W-What?" he questioned.

"Hey, that's what they told me," Val said, holding up her hand in defense. "They keep coming up to me, asking if we're 'involved' and then wondering if I could introduce them to you. You've become quite popular, Shuuhei."

He cocked an eyebrow. "Involved? The two of us? What did you say?"

Val decided to mess with him. "That we were hopelessly in love with each other, skipped classes from time to time so that we could have a quickie, and that at night we never emerge from one of our rooms till the next morning." Shuuhei's face turned bright red in embarrassment, mouth hanging open in shock, eyes wide. Val couldn't hold her laughter in anymore, exploding with it. "Y-Y-You s-s-should s-see y-y-your f-face!" she exclaimed through laughs. "Priceless!"

Shuuhei managed to compose himself somewhat, however, the blush still lingered. "I'm kidding," the young woman finally managed out after calming down. "I told them we were just friends."

"Well, maybe I don't want them pestering me about going out with them," he answered back.

Val cocked an eyebrow, arms crossing over her chest. "Sorry to break it to you, Shuuhei, but it's going to happen."

He stepped forward, making Val move further into the room. Shuuhei closed the door behind them. "But I don't like them."

Val smirked. "Well, I'm sure out of all of them you'll find someone."

Shuuhei reached forward, gripping at Val's obi, pulling her closer. His breath hitched, realizing what he was about to do. "It's not them I want."

She looked into his eyes, searching them. Then Val realized what he was getting at, but wanted to hear it come from his lips. "Then who do you want, Shuuhei?" she whispered.

Shuuhei swallowed the lump in his throat. "You, Val."

She smiled, leaning forward and closing the gap between them. They're lips met lightly, slowly, taking in the feeling that ran through them. Shuuhei then wrapped his arms around Val's waist, pulling her body flush against his. Val reached up, one hand against his neck, the other tangled in the hair.

The kiss intensified, both pressing into it. Val gripped at Shuuhei's uniform, tugging him backwards to the bed. Soon they were on it. They gasped for air before going back in, lips dancing. Val managed to turn them over so she was straddling Shuuhei's waist. Her lips left the young man's, attention drawing to his bandages. Carefully, delicately, Val began to peel them back. Shuuhei's eyes were closed from her touch, cool against his hot skin.

When the bandages were completely gone, Val looked at the three scars that ran down his face from where the Hollow had attacked him. Shuuhei opened his eyes, looking up at Val. "How bad is it?" he asked.

The young woman leaned forward slowly, before her lips lightly touched the wound. "Perfect," she whispered against his skin. Shuuhei closed his eyes again as Val kissed his forehead, eyelid, and down his cheek. He loved how her lips felt. It made his scars tingle at the care in her kisses. Shuuhei's hands traveled up her hips and side repeatedly, making Val's stomach flip.

Pulling away, Val got a good look at her friend below her. "You know something?" Shuuhei opened his eyes, locking his gaze with Val. She smiled. "You look a lot more mysterious without the bandages."

Shuuhei grinned back, pulling Val's head down into another kiss. "Thank you, Val," he whispered.
