Writer's Block

*Ruby's little bit of random*

I've recently been getting a lot of writer's block. And when I say a lot...I mean A LOT. It's like my brain is just like "hahahahaha nope, no writing for you." If ever I do write something that I think is okay, when I read it through again I just think it's a load of poop. The things that I write that aren't fanfiction, I find a lot harder to write than things that are fanfiction.

For example, in a Harry Potter fanfiction I would already have the characters, the personalities, the setting and all I'd need would be the plot. However, with the other things I write, I have to come up with the characters, the personalities, the setting, the plot and ugggggghhhhhhhhhh.

One of the things I'd really love to do at some point in my life, is publish a book, which I guess is a little farfetched but whatever, I can dream.

With fanfiction, I feel I can write whatever I want to write and it doesn't need to be filled with fancy words and all that stuff, but people will still enjoy the story. Maybe it's just me, but I don't feel I can do that with stories that aren't fanfiction. This then leads to writer's block, the bane of any author's existence. But I was thinking, maybe it's not so bad.

It's like every idea you think of is a big bowl of mushy peas. It looks disgusting. When you put it on the page (the idea not the peas) it just looks like nothing special.

But some people like mushy peas. They might look at your idea and actually LIKE it.

Wow great metaphor Rubes. Good job.

What I'm trying to say is that even if you get writer's block, maybe that's a good thing. It helps you realise "maybe I should leave this bit alone and come back to it later because at the moment it looks like poop." Every author needs a break. Maybe the next time you look at that bowl of mushy peas in a few days they won't look as gross as before. Maybe they'll actually look quite nice...

Even writers like J K Rowling get writer's block. Just because you have it, you don't need to think "I can't do anything. I can't come up with any original ideas, ugghhhhhhh!!" *scrunches up paper/throws laptop at the wall*

I'm actually being pretty hypocrytical right now because I do that...

My New Years resolution is to start actually write a book. And to realise it's okay to get writer's block. Don't fight it, embrace it. Take a break and then write something AWESOME.

So my question to you is

Did you make any New Year's resolutions?  If so, what were they? And have you stuck to them so far?

Hope you have a great week!
