okay, so here's the thing. i should've known better. like, truly, i should've known. nothing good ever happens when i meet up with theo. especially not alone. especially not in the bloody library of all places. but apparently, i'm a masochist because here i am, walking to the back of the library to get my essay on felix felicis that theo, like the overachieving potions god he is, decided to completely rewrite for me.

now, to be clear, i didn't ask him to redo the whole thing. all i said last night was, "hey, this essay sucks, i think slughorn might actually fail me, please help," and now here we are. that's not exactly what texted him, but you get the gist. apparently, my essay was so bad theo felt personally offended by it. which, fine. whatever. i'm getting an O, and that's all that matters.

but what i wasn't expecting—what i absolutely did not sign up for—was walking to the back of the library and finding theo sitting at a table with his entire gang. like, the entire slytherin dream team. daphne, pansy, blaise, mattheo, and fucking draco.

draco. malfoy.

now, most of them are fine. like, daphne and i are still cool—she's the only one who actually stayed friends with me after i dumped theo. blaise is blake's older brother, so he's chill, and mattheo is just mattheo—he's never not vibing. but pansy? yeah, no. pansy called me a "gryffindor attention-seeking whore" when theo and i broke up, so she can choke. and draco? yeah, we really don't need to get into that. let's just say draco and i avoid each other for very, very good reasons.

so i see all of them sitting there, and i immediately regret my entire life. like, my soul tries to leave my body on the spot. but theo looks up, and of course, he fucking smirks. because he's theodore fucking nott, and if there's one thing he loves more than potions, it's being a smug little shit.

"blue," he says, like he didn't just ruin my day by existing. "you came."

ugh.

"yeah," i mumble, crossing my arms over my chest as i walk up to the table. "you have my essay?"

"you're welcome, by the way," he says, leaning back in his chair like he owns the place. "i saved your grade, si."

"and i'm so grateful," i say, because as much as i hate him right now, i do need that essay. "can i have it now, or are we doing this whole theo-show thing first?"

blaise snorts. daphne grins at me. pansy glares like she wants to set me on fire. draco looks like he'd rather be anywhere else (same, buddy). and mattheo? mattheo just smirks, like he knows something he shouldn't.

"you look gorgeous, by the way," theo says, completely ignoring my question.

ugh. again.

"thanks," i say flatly. "the essay, theo."

"you're in a rush," he says, tilting his head. "where's lover boy? shouldn't bash be glued to your side or something?"

and there it is. theo being theo.

"he's busy," i lie, because there's no way i'm telling him the truth—that bash and i haven't exactly been on great terms since his brilliant idea of posting that lingerie photo for my birthday. "can i please just have the essay?"

theo sighs, like i'm inconveniencing him or something. "fine," he says, pulling a rolled-up parchment from his bag. "here."

"anyway," i say, grabbing the essay out of theo's hand. "thanks for this. i'll, uh, see you around."

but theo isn't done.

"blue," he says softly, and i freeze.

"what?"

he stands up, towering over me because of course, he does, and leans in just enough to make my heart race. "you know you don't have to keep pretending you don't miss me."

and there it is. theo nott, the king of mixed signals, just dropped a fucking bombshell. i mean i know he wants me back but for what exactly? to treat me like a don't matter all over again? at least now he wants me and lets me know he does. if we got back together, he'd take me for granted all over again. i don't think i can handle that.

"i don't—" i start, but he cuts me off.

"you do," he says, his voice barely above a whisper. "and for what it's worth, i miss you too."

i stare at him, my heart pounding, and for a split second, i want to believe him. but then i remember everything. january. february. march.

so i shove the essay into my bag, turn on my heel, and walk away without another word.
