"...SINCE EVERYONE'S BASICALLY BAILING, I'll be taking you to the school to help prepare for the dance!" Caroline finished exasperatedly, taking a deep breath to relax. Her relaxation was, however, short lived when she heard the undeniable sound of sipping from a straw in an almost empty cup. "Aurelia!" She exclaimed, frowning considerably.
"Uhβ yes, ohβ yeah, Caroline?" The series of stutters, followed by the sound of something dropping into a metallic container. "I was paying attention."
"And...?"
"I'll uh... do it..." Aurelia's voice was unsure and slow, as if she was cautious about her words. "Go out, or whatever."
"You don't sound very enthusiastic." Caroline huffed loudly, before hearing a small sigh from her sister's end. "Aurelia, I'm taking you to school to help prepare for the dance; only Elena's gonna be there andβ" She stopped for a moment, realizing the slight distaste the blonde had for the doppelganger. "I know you don't like her."
"She's just extremely... irritating... and, well, annoying. I don't not like her; I'd just prefer to hang out with someone else." After several moments, she continued. "It's fine, Caroline. One person's not going to stop me from spending time with you."
"Really?"
"You know it. I'll see you at the school." With a small click, Aurelia had hung up, making Caroline frown considerably as she looked up at Stefan, who walked into the Salvatore Boarding House moments ago.
"Hey," She began, taking a look down at a large and seemingly empty duffel bag in his hand. "What're you carrying that around for? And where are you coming from?" Stefan sighed and threw the bag to the ground, before pinching the bridge of his nose in clear frustration. "Stefan?"
"You know how the Originals have Damon, right?" Caroline blinked several times in shock as he said that. "Aurelia didn't tell you that? Really?" With a small shake of her head, her surprise only grew. "They took him in for Rebekah's revenge fantasy, and then found out about Finn's death, which in turn sent Sage over here last night to kill me."
"Wait, what?!" At this point, Caroline was completely astounded by the number of things that had taken place after she left his place for the night. "She came over here to kill you?!" After a nod, she blinked several times and struggled to come up with a clear sentence. "S-She's nine centuries older than you are?! How did you manage that mess?!"
"I didn't, actually." He answered, his frustration toning down marginally as he took a seat on the large couch. "She brought her friend, Troy with her to attack me and then come after the rest of you... but," He had to pause for a moment, as if he was still absorbing his own thoughts. "They died. The both of them."
"How?"
"They were about to kill me, but Sage... she started coughing, while her skin turned pale." He vaguely narrated. "Soon enough it was hard for her to muster a strong punch at all. Even Troy began exhibiting the same symptoms, until they started bleeding from their nose and ears and eventually just shriveled up and died." He was clearly still confounded by the events of the previous night, which didn't bring Caroline any sort of comfort. "I didn't even try to kill them, they died on their own."
"How did that happen?" She had to question the obvious, but much to her expectation, Stefan only shook his head. "You don't know."
"I don't." He repeated. "But what's worse is that I got a call from a very angry Klaus Mikaelson just minutes later, with him threatening me to bring back all of the white oak stakes we had." He explained. "He'd kill Damon otherwise."
"And then?"
"I had to give him the stakes, he knew how many there were because he was able to compel Damon into telling him." Caroline's shock only grew at his words. "I just got back from the Manor... but we have one missing stake. The one that Alaric had hidden. He says he has no recollection of where he kept it. Damon went over to help him look, but just called me and told me that Alaric hadn't the faintest idea where he kept it." His voice trailed off, as he began to lose hope. "Turns out, it was Alaric's alter ego that hid it, and now we've got to get it out of him."
"But...?"
"We still need to figure out Sage and Troy," He said. "I think something's wrong and we need to take care of that right now." Caroline remained quiet for a few moments, only to light up with a quick idea.
"I'll ask Aurelia!" She exclaimed as an idea hit her, seeming to be slightly proud that she came up with it. "If anyone knew, it would be the Originals, and Aurelia is technically a part of their family. She'd know." As she finished speaking, Stefan took no time and hesitation to agree with her. "I'll be seeing her at the school today, anyway; I can bring it up."
"Yeah, do that and uh," He paused. "Let me know if you find something; I'll take care of Alaric in the meanwhile." He explained himself briefly. "Alsoβ"
"Yes, I'll send kisses to her on your behalf." Caroline teased, picking up her bag from the couch. Stefan could only laugh at the joke, shaking his head as he stood up to see her off.
"I meant, check in on her to see if she's fine." He said, and Caroline's excitement didn't dwindle at all. "It's not sending her kisses, Caroline! I'm just... wondering if she's doing okayβ"
"Whatever! Bye!"
"GOOD MORNING, HUMAN AND REBEKAH." Aurelia took a look at Matt Donovan and then her sister, whose focus was entirely on whatever decoration sat on her table. "I thought they'd book some sort of venue for the dance; basketball stadium venues grew old in 1987." She remarked carelessly, turning around slowly to absorb the surroundings. "Oh!"
Her eyes landed on a large, showy banner that said, "The Roaring 20's" before her eyes sparkled with glee.
"The 20's?!" She said loudly. "Whose idea was this? It's brilliant! The 20's was, hands down, the best decade of the 20th century." She then looked back at Matt and Rebekah with an amused smile on her features. "Caroline has good taste. And the two of us would be appropriate judges." She continued, gesturing to Rebekah.
"It wasn't Caroline's idea," A bored tone left Rebekah's form. "It was mine."
"Well, at least you put that thick head to use." Aurelia said instantly, causing the older to glare at her in an attempt to intimidate and scare her, only to give up as she remained still and didn't react to the glare. "Where is Caroline, anywayβ"
"THE ROARING 20'S?!" A loud yell came from behind the vampire, making her hiss and lift a hand up to her ear as she recognized Caroline's shrill and angry voice. "WHOSE IDEA WAS THIS?!" She then laughed slightly as she saw the difference in the tone of the question asked when she had posed it herself.
"Rebekah's," She answered without thinking, before her eyes widened when she realized the magnitude of her carelessness at the moment. "Caroline, wait!" She said quickly, standing in the infuriated blonde's way when she saw that she was stomping towards the Original Vampire. "Listen, listen, listen."
"When did she, of all people in the world, have a say in this?!" She cried. "And is that my dress and jacket?!" While in her yelling voice, Caroline still caught the smallest of details. Rebekah and Matt both finally turned their attention to Aurelia's outfit, before Rebekah raised her eyebrows. "Off topic, but that looks adorable, oh my god..."
"You're wearing... a denim jacket with a dress...?" She questioned, before the blonde rolled her eyes.
"LISTEN!" Aurelia thundered, causing Caroline's anger to dissolve in moments, making the older sigh in relief. "As you know, I was a part of the Roaring 20's. I even took over a little bit of Chicago at the time, you know? I was also a part of the 70's; chaotic, messy, fun, but just a tad bit too similar to the 21st century. The 20's however..."
"But that doesn't meanβ"
"Hush, sweetheart." She silenced her. "You'll enjoy it. Just play your part and prepare for the dance, alright?" Caroline's frown turned into a pout, before her features relaxed and she looked like she had been hit with a thought. "Is everything alright?"
"I had to ask you a question," She said.
"If it's involving the dress I'd like to peep in." Rebekah spoke in between the two, making Caroline whip her head towards the Original Vampire to eye her up and down with a glare. "What?"
"No." She said, before pulling Aurelia away from the group. Rebekah only huffed and folded her arms as she watched the woman get dragged, almost unwillingly and in complete confusion until Caroline stopped at a corner of the gym. "This is about last night..."
"Is it about me dying?" Aurelia couldn't help but sigh. "I keep telling you that I'm completely fine..."
"Sage and Troy came to the Salvatore Boarding House before you left." An eyebrow momentarily raised on Aurelia's skin. "They tried to attack Stefan for killing Finn butβ"
"They had to have died by then." With the mumble from the elder's lips, Caroline widened her eyes as the possibility that Aurelia knew the answer to their problems grew. "How long after Finn's death was this?" She asked finally, after seconds of pondering to herself.
"Uh, two or three hours." Caroline replied softly. "They died before they could kill him." She saw Aurelia's shoulders lower as she visibly relaxed; from what, she didn't know. "You know something, don't you?"
"Yes," Aurelia started. "I thought you would've known too." When her sister shook her head slowly and unsurely, a small and disbelieving scoff left Aurelia's form. "Caroline, you do know that we have a bloodline, don't you? And not the one that the two of us have. It's the bloodline between a vampire and the person they turn."
"Wait, wait, wait... what?"
"Seriously? No one told you about this?"
"No one knew! We attacked Finn carefully considering what knowledge we had!" Caroline almost exclaimed loudly, before remembering that she wasn't too far from letting Rebekah hear their conversation. "Which didn't turn out to be enough knowledge," She quietened down. "Considering you died."
"I didn't die," Aurelia defended. "I thought about it and I never died, just lost consciousnessβ why are we talking about this?! I thought you knew about the bloodline laws of a vampire!" She hissed. "The Originals have turned vampires which have in turn turned other vampires. It all starts from them, doesn't it?" With a small and understanding nod from Caroline, Aurelia continued. "If you kill an Original Vampire, everyone they have turned dies, and in turn because the Original dies, everyone in that bloodline dies. In Finn's case," She explained clearly, masking the shock she had from the confession. "He turned Sage, who turned Troy. If you killed Sage, Troy wouldn't die, but since the magic starts from the Original Vampire, both Sage and Troy die if that magic dies."
"So you're telling me..." Caroline swallowed nervously as she began speaking. "That we killed an Original Vampire without knowing if we were in their bloodline?" With her self-realization, she began to panic. "Oh my god, what if Stefan and Damon are connected to them, and if Damon dies then I do, ohβ"
"Caroline, relax." Aurelia held onto her sister's shoulders in concern and shook them gently to get her attention. "You would've died at the same time as them if you were connected. You're not connected to them. I know it."
"Oh, okay, okay..." Caroline then trailed off, before slowly looking towards the storm-eyed vampire. "Wait, what do you mean you know? Do you know our bloodline's Original?" Blinking several times at Caroline's question, the fact that she may have spilled too much hit Aurelia. "Aurelia. I was turned by Damon, Damon and Stefan by Katherine, and Katherine by Damon's friend Rose, so do you know who turned Rose?" At Aurelia's silence, Caroline realized that she wouldn't speak any further on the topic. "You're not... going to..."
"...No." Aurelia answered, knowing what her question was. "It's safer for everyone this way. You won't die by their hands if you kill them, and they won't die if you don't know." After a small second. "You know your boyfriend Tyler, though?" After another nod, worse news hit Caroline.
"H-He's a hybrid... turned by..." She didn't finish her sentence, considering Rebekah had called for Aurelia's help. "You can g-go, I'll tell the others." Aurelia looked at her with much more concern than she had before, but had to walk away. She caringly placed a hand on her shoulder this time, gently stroking it for a moment. "Thanks for...telling me..." After Caroline had left, Aurelia looked at the doorway once, before reluctantly deciding to leave Caroline to herself and make her way towards Rebekah.
"Why was she asking about our bloodline?" As the first words she heard, Aurelia only glared at the older vampire. "What? I had nothing to do!"
"And that gives you an excuse to eavesdrop?" She retorted sternly. "Really, Rebekah, it's not that big of a deal. What did you want anyway?" She folded her arms and tapped her foot impatiently, staring at her sister as she waited for her to speak.
"...why the dress?" Aurelia scoffed loudly and rolled her eyes as she proceeded to snap at her for the unnecessary question.
"Damn it, 'Bekah! I wanted to see what it would look like on me, how is that abnormal?! You know me for my interest towards experimentation..." She trailed off, trying to piece her next words together. "...in no particular field."
"It's a dress, and you're wearing denim with it." Rebekah pointed out in a matter-of-factly tone, making Aurelia huff. "Not to mention the cute converse. I'm pretty sure that's yours." She directed her gaze towards Aurelia's feet, which were covered by the popular brand's model, an off-white shade that went perfectly well with the dusty-rose color. "It looks cute, though."
"The jacket's mine too, for your information. I accidentally took Caroline's dress to the Manor after she offered to dress me up with her clothes for lunch weeks ago. I thought to wear it today because I felt like it." She defended carelessly, only to have her mind taken off the topic with the ring of her phone. "I wonder who that is."
"Better not be the Salvatore boy." Rebekah sneered, leaning over the table to peer at the caller ID, only for Aurelia to pick up the phone before she could even see the screen. "If that's you, Stefan, leave my bloody sister alone!" She exclaimed, earning funny looks from students around them.
"Klaus, I just saw you when I was leaving the manor." Aurelia spoke clearly, enunciating the Original Hybrid's name for Rebekah. "I hope you're asking me to come back because I am bored here." With a chuckle from the other end, she heard his British-accented voice fill the short silence.
"Well, I do have something for you to do, but it's not back at home."
"YOU'RE HERE EARLY." As soon as Stefan's remark came through, Aurelia wore an obvious scowl on her face from the clear disinterest of even standing in his presence. "What?"
"I'm punctual," She snapped, shoving past him into his house. "Don't act so excited. I'm only here to get the information out of Mr. Saltzman." With a small pause, she made her way into the living room before coming to a stop. "Besides, might as well make conversation with the alter ego that split my organ in two." As she finished, there was a sudden silence that she hadn't expected. "Stefan?" She called, standing still in her position when she noticed that he hadn't spoken at all. "Stefanβ" When she finally spun around, she was welcomed by a shameless Stefan Salvatore whose eyes had trailed up and down her figure. "You're such a guyβ" She scowled.
"What?" He asked. "No, you're just- you look different." At his words, her own gaze fell to her outfit. "It's not bad, I meant itβI meant that you look good..." She could only laugh at his stumbling over words, the thought of an envious and possessive Kol crossing her mind. "You look great, actually."
"Tone it down, sir." She sarcastically spoke, folding her arms. "I don't need people to tell me that I pull off absolutely anything that I wear." With a roll of his eyes, Stefan pushed himself off of the wall he was leaning on. "Where is he? Klaus sent me to beat answers out of him, not for you to ogle at me."
"I was not ogling." Another laugh as she took a step forward. "What are you doing?"
"If you weren't ogling, then what were you doing?" She challenged, only coming to a stop when she was close to him.
"Appreciating." His change of tone caught her off guard for a short second. She began to blink several times while she sneered at him and pushed him away from her. "I answered you, what was that for?" She opened her mouth to answer quickly with the words, "Your cockiness", but shut it before she spoke without thinking.
"Just lead me to Alaric."
"WHAT ARE YOU DOING HERE, AURELIA?" Aurelia hummed, taking a seat on the first chair she saw in the cell. "I thought you were Elena for a moment there." At Alaric's words, she scrunched up her nose in slight disgust.
"My goodness, Mr. Saltzman," Alaric proceeded to correct her and let her know that she could use his first name, but her glare only shut him up and left her to continue. "Comparing me to that doppelganger? Not wise at all, I must say." When Stefan walked into the cell and shut the door behind him, she leaned back in her seat. "Where is she, actually? Damon, too for that matter, I haven't seen them for a while nowβnot that I miss it."
"Well..." Stefan exchanged worried glances with Alaric, which hadn't gone missed by the blonde vampire who only narrowed her eyes. "To put it shortly, they've gone on a small road trip."
"I don't believe you." She shot back instantly. "But considering our dear Klaus has eyes and ears everywhere, he'll find out in due time. It's no worry on my shoulders." With a small sigh, she looked back at Alaric. "And to answer your first question, I'm here to beat the shit out of you so your alter ego shows up!" As she finished enthusiastically, Alaric couldn't help but wince.
"Did you intend to be that excited?"
"Of course!" Her exclamation caused both men in the room to flinch slightly and then look her questioningly. "What? Need I remind you that Mr. Alter Ego here attempted to kill meβunsuccessfully, I'll addβwhen I was already in a bad mood? Klaus did good by sending me here to supervise you two so that You don't end up hiding things you're not supposed to." She then smiled widely. "Plus, I'll get to throw in some good hits to scare Not-Alaric out of him."
"That's...not in the planβ"
"Do you seriously think Not-Alaric will just wake up?" She asked, a disbelieving huff leaving her lips. "He'll come out with it's most optimal for him to because he's in Mr. Saltzman'sβ" She cut herself off, shooting a side glance to the subject of the conversation. "My apologies, I meant Alaric'sβ subconscious. That optimal time is either death, or near death. I'd willingly kill him but to torture the shit out of him is a better choice."
"In what way?" Stefan asked, his eyes wide at her disturbingly casual tone while she spoke about torturing and hitting the human as if it were a daily activity.
"The one that benefits my sadistic tendencies, of course." She swiftly answered in an
