Yamato, also known as "Tenzo", are both code names for this Anbu-turned-jonin of Konohagakure. As his Wood Release would allow him to be able to keep the Nine-Tails sealed within Naruto Uzumaki in check, he was re-assigned from Anbu to the regular forces, joining Team Kakashi as a temporary replacement for their jonin-sensei, Kakashi Hatake. While Kakashi eventually returns to the team, Yamato stays on to assist as needed.
Fun fact: In the anime, it is revealed that Yamato suffers from motion sickness while in enclosed spaces. Episode 376, I think.
It was rather early in the morning the sun hadn't even risen yet. You had to be awake now, even though you didn't want to be. You wished you could relax and sleep for a few more hours, after all today was supposed to be perfect.
It was your anniversary with Yamato who you had been seeing for quite some time. The two of you had made plans for this day a long time ago, and you had been really looking forward to it as well. It hurt more than you knew how much he was looking forward to it.
It hurt because you had reluctantly agreed to leave for an important mission today instead of following through with the plans. It's not that you didn't want to enjoy the anniversary plans, but you knew this mission was more important. The mission was also quite dangerous but you pushed that aside, you were the only one available to go on this mission and it was urgent.
If it wasn't for that you might have turned it down, but you were too dedicated to turning your back on it. You knew Yamato wouldn't be happy about this he often felt you pushed yourself too hard as it was, you wanted to tell him last night when you got home.
However, it was late and he was already asleep you didn't want to wake him with bad news. You decided it would be better to wait until morning which is why you made sure to wake up before him, and if things ended with an argument the two of you would have some time apart, and maybe once you came back the two of you could make up.
You wanted to catch him early before he got too excited for the day. You hated to do this last minute but you couldn't see any way around it. Even though you were awake you stayed in bed, you didn't want to alert him and wake him up by getting out of bed.
You wanted him to wake up on his own, after all, there was no reason to rush you didn't have to leave until a while later. You laid in bed staring at the ceiling hoping he would be understanding, but you didn't know how understanding you would be if the situation was reversed.
You were caught off guard when you felt him move you almost wanted to pretend to be sleeping for you could just avoid this whole situation. But you didn't you laid there awkwardly trying not to pay attention to him, Yamato sat up in bed when he noticed you were already awake.
"Good morning," he said cheerfully with a smile and your heart sank, you couldn't bring yourself to look at him.
"Y-yeah good morning," you said stumbling over your words.
"What's wrong?" he asked sounding concerned, you were worried this would happen, Yamato had always been very perceptive and had an easy time reading you like a book. You didn't know how to respond you really didn't want to immediately explain things first thing in the morning, however it was looking like you were going to have to.
He already knew something wasn't right and you couldn't hide a thing from him, so you had no other choice but to break the news. You sat up in bed to face him but immediately had second thoughts and turned away and stood up, which only began to set off more alarms in his head.
"What? What's wrong?" he questioned beginning to sound a little panicked as he stood up too.
You hesitated, not knowing how to start,
"Okay, okay but don't get mad." you pleaded,
"You can't say that when you haven't told me what's going on yet." he disagreed as he walked around the bed towards you.
"Alright." you said, you took a deep breath "We can't do our anniversary plans today," you admitted quickly before looking away from him, not wanting to see how he'd react.
"What?" he asked almost like he didn't hear you,
"I'm sorry, I'm sorry" you apologized,
"I have to go on this mission it's very important! you know I wouldn't go if it wasn't," you explained desperately.
"HAVE to?" he questioned though he was still quite calm, he wasn't raising his voice or getting angry yet, though he was exaggerating the word "have".
"It's important and there's no one else that can go!" you said trying to defend why you had to do this.
"And today of all days?" he asked,
"I'm really sorry, I am. Trust me I tried to see if anyone else could go instead of me," you assured.
"You know how backed up things have been these last few weeks." you insisted.
"Why didn't you tell me this sooner?" he asked beginning to sound annoyed or maybe a bit angry.
"They didn't ask me until yesterday and I-." you began explaining but he cut you off,
"You could have told me yesterday! not hours before we're supposed to leave," he complained.
"It's not as if I don't want to go." you countered,
"Then why would you agree to this?" he asked not following your logic on the decision you've made.
"I HAVE to go, It's a very important mission, and if you can't understand that then I don't know what to tell you!" you snapped.
You knew he wouldn't be happy over this but you had hoped he would be at least a little more understanding about it. You didn't know what else to say and began packing your things for your mission,
"So that's it you're just going?" he asked.
"I already told you I'm going, and I can't back out of this now," you argued.
"You could of at least asked me before you accepted the mission." he asserted,
"Like I need your approval?" you questioned though you weren't expecting an answer.
"And there's been plenty of times where you've left for missions on short notice!" you continued,
"That's different we had anniversary plans!" he argued, "I never just canceled plans with you for a mission." he snapped.
"You would if you had to! if you were in my shoes you would do the same thing!" you argued back as you finished getting ready and finished packing and roughly threw your backpack on.
Before he had the chance to say another word you turned away from him and hurried out of the bedroom to get on your way, you didn't have to leave for a while yet but you didn't want to stick around here now.
You were upset and didn't want to argue with him any longer, you figured you'd just get a head start. You hurried towards the front door to leave but right as your fingertips grazed the doorknob, you were pulled back. Yamato had grabbed your other arm and pulled you away from the door, holding your arm tightly
"I'm sorry." he apologized sounding genuinely sorry, you were a bit taken aback by his apology because just minutes ago you two were arguing it felt a bit too soon. You didn't know what to say to him and he could tell you were lost,
"I'm really sorry, I shouldn't have gotten upset over it," he admitted.
"I understand why you're doing this. and we can reschedule the anniversary plans for another time," he assured.
You felt your anger fading away it was hard for you to stay angry when he was being so supportive and understanding, and he admitted he was sorry. He pulled you closely into a warm hug,
"I don't want you to leave with us being upset with each other," he explained.
"I'm sorry too." you apologized
"I shouldn't have yelled at you either," you admitted hugging him back.
"I love you," Yamato said lovingly,
"I love you too," you said happily before he kissed you lightly.
"When you get back we'll reschedule the anniversary plans, just make it back safe," he said.
"I'll be back as soon as I can," you promised.
Saying your goodbyes you left for the mission in a surprisingly good mood, and you looked forward to coming back to celebrate your anniversary.
