TW: Spidey gets called a f-slur and I ain't censoring it when it happens
Primrose drags me through the hospital towards Aunt May's room. We rush faster when we hear her groaning in agony.
"Get the BP!"
"Aunt May!" I rush to her side, picking Primrose up so she sat on my hip. "Is she gonna be okay? What happened?"
"Yes. She's gonna be okay. Look, you two have to leave, right now." A nurse starts pushing us out.
"What happened?!"
"Those eyes!" Aunt May moans. "Those horrible yellow eyes!"
My eyes widen when the door was shut on us. "He knows who I am..." I mutter in shock.
"He knows you're Spiderwoman," Primrose nods. I look down at her, surprised. She just shrugs. "It isn't rocket science."
---
I sat Aunt May's bedside, Primrose asleep on my lap. I take Aunt May's hand in mine, my thumb gently brushing her knuckles. I let out a heartbroken sigh, "... I'm sorry."
---
"Will she be okay?" MJ asks as during her visit.
"She's gonna be fine," I nod. "She's been sleeping all day. Thanks for coming."
MJ gives me a small smile, "of course."
"How are you? You okay about the other night?"
"Yeah, I'm fine. I just felt bad about leaving Aunt May. I'm only grateful Primrose was at the kid's house across the street when it happened. Weren't that kid's parents the ones who called?"
"Mhm!" Primrose nods. "Mrs. Morales is a nurse so was able to help right away and Mr. Morales is an officer so called his buddies!"
"Have to talked to Harry?" I sigh, asking MJ.
"He called me. I haven't called him back. The fact is... I'm in love with somebody else."
"You are?" To say I was surprised would be an understatement.
"Ew," Primrose gags. "I'm gonna go to the vending machine down the down." She quickly exits the room. This kid, I swear-
"At least, I think I am," MJ chuckles at Primrose's antics. "It's not the right time to talk about it."
"No, no. Go on." I chuckle softly. "Would I know his name, this guy?"
"Well, first of all, you'll think I'm a stupid little girl with a crush. Second of all, it's a she."
"Ooh."
"It's funny. She saved my life twice, and I've never even seen her face."
"Oh. Her." My grin widens.
She laughs, "you're laughing at me!"
"No, no! I understand! She is extremely cool!"
We sit down as MJ asks, "but do you think it's true, all the terrible things they say about him?"
"Nah, Spiderwoman? Not a chance in the world. I know her a little bit." She gives me a look to which I laugh, "I'm sort of her unofficial photographer."
"Has she mentioned me?"
"Of course."
"What'd she say?"
"Well, she asked me what I thought about you."
"And what did you say?"
"I said: Well, Spiderwoman... the great thing about MJ is when you look in her eyes and she's looking back in yours... everything feels not quite normal. Because you feel... stronger, and weaker at the same time. You feel excited and the same time, terrified. The truth is, you don't know what you feel expect you know what kind of a person who want to be. It's as if you've... reached the unreachable... and you weren't ready for it."
MJ blushes and softly asks, "you said that?"
"Well," I shrug. "Something like that. I feel asleep ten minutes later." MJ takes my hand into hers, giving me a soft smile.
"EMMA!" Primrose bursts into the room. "Look at what Harold got me!" She holds up a large cup filled with a red-n-blue mixed slushie. Harry follows in behind her, looking at MJ and I. MJ quickly lets go of my hand.
"Hey," I nod at Harry.
Harry, after a moment speaks up. "Y'know I'd make a threesome joke if Prim wasn't here."
"Get out," MJ deadpans.
---
"Wake up," Aunt May ruffles my hair, forcing me to lift my sleepy face off of my English homework. "Go home, dear. You look awful."
"And you look beautiful," I give her a cheeky grin.
"Well, thank you."
"I don't like to leave you here."
"But I'm safe here. Just as Primrose is safe with the Morales' and how you're safe with Harry."
I hum, "can I do anything for you?"
"You do too much," Aunt May shakes her head. "College, a job, all this time with me. You're not Wonder Woman, you know." We both chuckle. "A smile, finally. Haven't seen one of those on your face since Mary-Jane was here."
"Hey! You were supposed to be asleep."
She chuckles, "you know, you were about six years old when MJ's family moved in next door. You barely left your room and could barely attend school without feeling sick. Peter's disappearance took a toll on you more than anyone else. Uncle Ben carried you out of your bed and brought you outside to welcome our new neighbors. And when MJ got out of the car, and you saw her for the first time, you grabbed me and said, Aunt May. Aunt May, is that an angel?"
I let out an embarrassed laugh, "oh, jeez. Did I really say that?"
"You sure did."
"Well, as far as I'm concerned, same-sex marriage is still illegal."
She hums, "unfortunate, isn't it? How closed-minded some folks could be is truly nerve-wracking. You know, you're mother's brother was in love with a man. God bless their souls."
I sigh, "Harry's in love with her. She's still his girl."
"Harry's in love with both of you, and you're in love with both of them. But MJ's heart only belongs to one. It's clear as day. And whoever her heart belongs to, it's up to her to make the right decision. Not Harry's, not yours. But, tell me, would it be so dangerous to let Mary-Jane know how much you care? If your the one her heart desires, and if she's the one your heart desires, don't let the government, society, or anyone forbid you from following your heart. Everybody else knows how much you care for her, how much you love her. It's nearly funny how everyone knows you love her, but none of them know your heart also belongs to Harry."
My eyes widen before I quickly plant a kiss on Aunt May's forehead. "I have to go. I'll see you, I promise." I rush out of her room before she could say a word and ran to the closest wall-mounted telephone. I put in some change and dial a number. "Come on, pick up." I sigh in relief when it's picked up. "Hey, MJ-"
"Sing your song at the beep!" The other line beeps.
"MJ, it's Emma. Are you there? Hello? Well... I'm just calling to check up on you. Will you call me when you get in, okay? All right, well... don't... don't go up any dark alleys, okay?" I gasp when I heard the phone being picked up. "Hello?"
I hear the Green Goblin cackle on the other line. "Can Spiderwoman come out to play?"
"Where is she?" I can feel my breath being caught up in my throat.
---
I land on top of a rooftop, noticing the explosion near the Queensboro Bridge. "Goblin, what have you done?" I shoot two webs on two flagpoles and jump backwards, creating myself a slingshoot before launching myself forward. I make it close enough and swing the rest of the way before landing on top of the Bridge.
"Spiderwoman! This is why only fools are heroes!" Green Goblin taunts. In one hand he held onto a thick cable-rope and in the other, he had Mary-Jane. "Because you never know when some lunatic will come along with a sadistic choice! Let die the woman you love..." MJ lets out a scream. "Or suffer the little children."
I glance over. The cable-rope is the only thing holding up cable car, inside was children. They looked as if they were only middle schoolers.
"Spiderwoman!"
"Save us!"
"Spiderwoman, save us!"
"Make your choice, faggot, and see how a hero is rewarded."
"Don't do it, Goblin!" I shout.
"We are who we choose to be! Now, choose!" He drops the cable-rope and MJ.
"NO!" In a split second decision, I run off the Bridge and catch MJ. I quickly swing underneath the Bridge and catch the cable-rope, I wrap the other arm around MJ as I use that hand to shoot a web up. I let out a sigh as I look up, noticing the web starting to break.
"Ahoy up there!" A ship motors it's way towards us. The Captain speaking from a megaphone. "We're gonna bring the barge right under you!"
Green Goblin cackles on his glider making MJ scream. "He's coming back!"
"Listen! I need you to climb down!" I tell her.
"I can't!"
"Yes, you can!" More of the web breaks, forcing us a down a couple yards. "MJ, you can do it. You have to. Trust me." She gulps and nods. "Hold on tight and go quickly." She slowly starts making her way down the rope. The Goblin cackles in the distance. "Hurry!"
"I can't! I can't do it!"
"Hang on, Mary-Jane!" I shout as Green Goblin punches me, however I don't loose my grip on either the web or the cable-rope. MJ screams and barely holds on.
Green Goblin glides back up, punching me in the face this time and I loose my grip. MJ screams as she falls down. In a quick second I shoot another web as I barely grab the cable-rope. MJ manages to grab a hold of the side railing on the cable car.
"She's not gonna make it!" A crew on the barge shouts.
"She's gonna make it!"
The Green Goblin glides back over to me. I let the cable-rope loosely slide down.
"It's time to die!" I can hear the grin under Green Goblin's mask. Two blades appear out of his glider as he speeds towards me. However, before he could hit me, a traffic cone is thrown at his head, knocking him off course.
"Come on up here, tough guy! I got a little something for you!" Some chucks a brick at him.
Above on the Queensboro Bridge, hundreds of civilians are shouting and throwing whatever they can at the Green Goblin.
"Yeah!"
"Leave Spiderwoman alone! You're gonna pick on a girl trying to save a bunch of kids?"
"Oh, yeah! I got something for your ass! You mess with Spidey, you mess with New York!"
"You mess with one of us, you mess with all of us!"
I manage to slowly let loose my grip on the cable-rope just in time for it land on the barge. The crowd cheers as the kids on the cable car were able to live to see another day. I release the cable-rope.
"SPIDERWOMAN! WATCH OUT!" I hear MJ scream as Green Goblin tosses a rope around my waist before yanking me away. He crashes me into an abandon building on the riverside. My Spidey-Sense goes off and I shoot a web, catching myself before I get impaled. However, I crash through a broken window and as I hit the ground, a pumpkin bomb is thrown at me, exploding in my face.
The heat of the explosion tears my mask off as I'm thrown back through a brick wall. I slam into a wooden pillar before falling forward, crashing onto a pile of large boulders. My left ear was ringing, it was the side the explosion hit me.
Green Goblin jumps in front of me. "Misery, misery, misery." He taunts as I manage to start standing up, gritting my teeth. "That's what you've chosen. I offered you friendship and you spat in my face!" He tries to punch my face but I dodge it, his other hand punches my shoulder, throwing my off guard and I bend down, barely avoiding his next punch that put a hole through the wooden pillar.
He knees my chin, forcing my body to go up straight before punching me in the face. My head whips to the side, saliva and blood mixed spat out of my mouth. I grunt as I turn my head back to the Goblin only for him sucker hook my jaw up, throwing my back a few yards on my back. I groan in pain.
Green Goblin jumps forward, his feet on each side of me as I sit up, punching me again and again and again. I manage to weakly shoot a web up, trying to dodge getting kicked in the face this time. But he jumps up and dug his foot in the spot between my shoulder and neck, knocking me back to the ground.
He rushes at me and grabs my wrist, I try to headbutt him back but he just punches my face, throwing further back. I quickly roll to my side facing him and shoot as many webs as possible out, creating a wall between us.
I quickly rise to my feet as he starts to break down the webbing, ready to punch him but he kicks me in the face, I slam back into a brick wall. I turn back around, my fists in front of me, ready to rumble just before he knees me in the chin again. I stumble back before he drop-kicked me in the chest, forcing me to fly against another brick wall.
I weakly lift my wrist but he steps on my hand. "You've spun your last web, Spiderwoman. Had you not been so selfish, your little girlfriend's death would have been quick and painless. But now that you've really pissed me off I'm gonna finish her nice and slow." My nose scrunches as I glare up at him. He pulls out a weapon. "MJ and I..." I slowly rise back onto my feet. "We're gonna have a hell of a time." He tries to impale me but I catch the edge of his weapon.
I struggle but I hold my ground before pushing on it, forcing his body to fly back. He gets back onto his feet but I web his ankles and yank, forcing him back onto the ground. I then shoot a web at the brick wall behind him and pull, forcing it to drop on top of him. I hear him groan as he pulls himself out of the rumble.
I then let out a scream as I punch him, forcing him to slam against the next brick wall. I pick him up by the neck and start punching him in the stomach. I then punch him in the face repeatedly before he stumbles down.
"Stop! Emma, stop! It's me!" I pause at Green Goblin's pleas. My eyes widen when Norman Osborn removes his mask.
"Mr. Osborn..."
"Emma, thank God for you."
"You killed those people on that balcony."
"The Goblin killed! I had nothing to do with it! Don't... Don't let him take me again! I beg you, protect me!"
"You tried to kill Mary-Jane... you tried to kill Aunt May!"
"But not you... I tried to stop it. But I couldn't stop it. I would never hurt you. I knew from the beginning, if anything ever happened to me, it was you that I could count on. You, Emma Parker, would save me, and so you have! Thank God for you! Give me your hand. Believe in me as I believed in you. I've been like a father to you. Be a daughter to me now."
"I had a father. His name was Ben Parker," I state.
The innocent charade left his eyes. "Godspeed, Spiderwoman."
My Spidey-Sense goes off and I quickly jump into the air. I land on the ground to see Norman impaled with his own glider. I stare at him in shock. He catches my eye.
"Emma... don't tell Harry." His body goes limp.
___
I carefully set Norman down on his bed in his penthouse. I had removed his goblin costume and cleaned him up the best I could. I look up to see Harry enter the room.
"What have you done...?" He questions. I remain quiet. I won't tell him what Norman has done not out of respect for Norman, but because Harry shouldn't think ill of him. "What have you done?!" He demands. He reaches for a gun and when he looks up, I'm gone.
___
The aftermath has left me deaf in my left ear. It's an absolute bitch.
I approach Harry at Norman's funeral. "Hey... I'm so sorry, Harry." He turns back to face me. "I know what it's like to lose a father."
"I didn't lose him. He was stolen from me," Harry states. "One day Spiderwoman will pay. I swear on my father's grave, Spiderwoman will pay." He sighs. "Thank God for you, Emma. You're the only one I have." He embraces me and I hug him back. He releases me, giving a small nod before walking away.
No matter what I do, no matter how hard I try, the ones I love will always be the ones who pay.
I approach Uncle Ben's grave before turning my head to see MJ approaching me. She embraces me, "you must miss him so much."
"It's been so hard without him."
"There's something I've been wanting to tell you. When I was up there... and I thought I was gonna die... there was only one person who I was thinking of. And it wasn't who I thought it would be. It was you, Em. I kept thinking... I hope I make it through this... so I can see Emma Parker's face one more time." She places her hand on my cheek.
"Really?"
"There's only been one person who's always been there for me, who makes me feel... like I'm more than I ever thought I could be. That I'm just... me. And that's okay. The truth is... I love you. Oh, I love you so much, Emma." She presses her lips against mine. After a moment, I pull back.
All I wanted was to tell her how much I loved her. To tell Harry I loved him. For my heart to pick one.
"I can't."
"...You can't what?"
"Tell you... everything. I mean, there's so much to tell."
She chuckles softly, "yeah. There's so much to tell."
"I want you to know that I will always be there for you. I will always be there to take care of you. I promise you that. I will always be your friend."
"Only a friend... Emma Parker?"
"That's all I have to give." I place a kiss on her cheek and walk away as tears roll down her eyes. She then places her fingers against her lips, realizing.
Whatever life holds in store for me, I will never forget these words: With great power, comes great responsibility. This is my gift. My curse. Who am I? I'm Spiderwoman.
