THEO AND BORIS walk out of the school, laughing with each other. Boris swiftly pulls out his black umbrella and opens it. Boris Pavlikovsky doesn't like the sun. Theo chuckles, remembering the first time they met. That day, Theo quickly learned that Boris doesn't like the sun. Boris puts away his umbrella as they board the bus. They find an empty row, and sit down.

The bus begins to move, and students begin to chat amongst themselves. Boris and Theo start a conversation about nothing too important, when the bus comes to a halt. Red light.

Boris glances out of the window, and finds a particular girl walking outside.

"There's that girl," says Boris, his thick Russian accent taking over. Theo turns his gaze over to the window, and finds Y/N L/N. The loner who walks home with an umbrella in hand. "Yeah," Theo replies. Theo and Boris are quite familiar with the appearance of the girl. In fact, they see her at the same place walking home with her black umbrella every day. Albeit they always point her out on the bus, they never say "hi" to her, or strike up a conversation with her. Though, Y/N pays no mind to this. She doesn't even know Theo and Boris exist. The bus starts moving again, going in the opposite direction of Y/N, and Y/N just continues her walk, trying her very best to block out the sun.

"Thanks," Y/N utters, after the lunch lady piles slop on her plate. Y/N sighs, and walks outside, over to her usual tableโ€”the one where she sits aloneโ€”. Once she reaches the table, Y/N sets her tray of slop down, and takes a seat. She picks at the "food." Most of the time, Y/N doesn't mind being alone, but today is a more depressing day than usual.

It's September 17, Y/N's mother's one year death anniversary.

Y/N doesn't know how to cope with the extra intense melancholy she feels on this day every year, so she simply cuts herself off from everyone. She's already a loner, but on this day she doesn't even converse with her fatherโ€”the only one left of her familyโ€”. Though, it's okay, since her father doesn't talk to her on this day either. They just sit in their house, completely silent. No television, no music, no nothing. Just silence. On rare occasions do they even cry, because the tears are long gone. Although, sometimes Y/N wishes someone would just ask her if she's okay on this very sad day. But alas, no one even knows it's her mother's death anniversary besides her father. Y/N continues to pick at her slop, trying to push all of her thoughts regarding her mother away.

"She looks sad," Boris states, on the other side of the outdoor lunch area. Theo looks over to Y/N. "She does. I wonder what's up with her," says Theo, as he stares at Y/N.

"Yeah...me too," Boris says. He suddenly stands up, and grabs Theo's hand.

"What are you doing?" Theo asks, confused. "If we want to know what's wrong with her, we ask," answers Boris, rather nonchalantly. Theo's eyes widen.

"No no no no no! When you said you wanted to know what is up with her, I didn't think you meant you actually want to go over there!" Theo protests. Boris grins.

"She looks lonely though," says Boris.

"She's always lonely," Theo replies, bluntly.

"We could change that," Boris says back. Theo sighs, before reluctantly saying, "Fine, we can go over there."

"Yes!" Boris exclaims, before nearly dragging Theo over to Y/N's table. Everyone stares at Boris and Theo, and only stare harder when they realize that they're walking over to Y/N's table. The entire school knows not to speak to Y/N, people find her scary, and say she's quite salty. So naturally when people see that two random kids are walking over to Y/N, they're concerned. Boris and Theo stop when they get to Y/N's table, and Y/N slowly looks up from her "food" when she's made aware of their presence.

"Uhm...can I help you...?" Y/N asks, confused as to why two people she has never seen before are at her table.

"Yes! We came over to ask why you look so sad," Boris responds, his Russian accent surprising Y/N. 'Is he a transfer student?' Y/N wonders. She just sits there, perplexed. Why would anyone care about her well-being? She doesn't know. Why would it be two kids who she's never spoken toโ€”or seen for that matterโ€”? She doesn't know. She does know that she doesn't care about those things, because someone finally asked her if she's okay!

"Uh, it's a bit of a personal matter..." Y/N answers. "Is this a joke or something?" Y/N asks, suspiciously.

"Of course not, you just looked sad," Boris replies. Y/N nods. "You guys can sit if you'd like." says Y/N. Boris happily obliges, and Theo hesitates, but still sits, nonetheless.

"I...uh....like your cat shirt," Y/N stammers, nervously. Boris chuckles. "Thanks," he replies.

"I like your sweater," Theo says, almost in a whisper. Y/N gives a small smile. "Thanks, it was my mothers," Y/N says, looking down at the sweater, and reminiscing.

"Was?" Boris asks, curios as to why she used past tense. Y/N gulps, and answers with, "Uh, well, my mother is dead. The reason I am so down...is because today is her death anniversary."
