jeremiah pulled stella aside. he took her hands in his and started swaying playfully. she chuckled softly, checking behind her. "you're gonna get me in trouble with paige."

he let go of her hands for a moment. "hey," he whistled at steven who was standing nearby with shayla.

jeremiah helped him take off his jacket and put it over his own body. nicole noticed and let out a low mumble. "okay, harry styles."

stella's body practically jolted at the mention of harry styles. "harry styles-"

"look what you did," jeremiah said playfully to nicole. he turned back to the girl in front of him, readjusting the jacket. "how's this? this better?"

she let out a sarcastic laugh. "wow, much better."

he took her hands back in his and started swaying to the music again. stella was doing pretty well, dancing wise. she only tripped over her own feet a few times before jeremiah had guided their dancing to the side of the room.

"hey, alexa," he said. "play 'so pretty'."

stella couldn't help but laugh before the boy pulled her towards the middle of the room. he started dancing very unformally and she just had to join in on the fun.

he shimmied off the jacket and twirled it in the air. stella did her own little dance before laughing and saying, "this is so stupid."

"stupid like me, right?" jeremiah smirked at the girl.

even though stella had pretended to not remember what had happened on the night of the fourth, that didn't mean that she had actually forgotten.

her face turned a subtle shade of red at his comment, recalling the events from a previous night.

*flashbacks*

"he just said stuff about how not to date stupid boys, you know? and he was all like, blah blah blah, stupid boys like... jere." stella mocked her best friend's voice.

jeremiah's lips parted slightly. with his eyebrows raised, he said, "really? i'm a stupid boy?"

"maybe that's just my type," she said, not even realizing that could potentially mean. she was too drunk to think before speaking. or acting.

he smirked. "does that mean i'm your type?"

*flashback ends*

based on her reaction to his subtle comment, jeremiah was starting to change his mind. it hadn't even crossed his mind that maybe she was lying about the whole thing. maybe she had remembered their little moment from the fourth of july.

he decided that until she brought it up, he wouldn't. stella found her way back to the boy and they were dancing again, but this time, less formal. he spun her around by her hand and she did the same to him.

she was thankful that jeremiah had showed up. the whole dance class became a lot more fun because of him. they continued dancing before they noticed paige walk back into the room.

"what is going on here?" the woman said firmly.

the whole room quieted. jeremiah stepped forward with a permanent downwards smile on his face.

"alexa, stop," paige ordered. the music shut off. she looked up at the tall boy who had caused this chaos. "jeremiah fisher, why aren't you at the pool?"

jeremiah glanced at stella mischeviously before replying with, "uh, we had a code brown. yeah, we lost the keys to the chemical closet."

the woman opened what looked like a book full of keys. she pulled one off and tossed it to the boy in front of her.

"there you go," she said in a high-pitched voice.

"thanks," he muttered, smiling and sending a quick wink in stella's direction. "catch you later, stel."

paige rolled her eyes. "get going, jeremiah."

he walked out of the room with a permanent smirk on his face. he hesitated before passing by another boy standing in the hall behind the woman. it was conrad.

stella had completely forgotten that she had told conrad to come and be her dance partner for the day. he waved at her and she went to send him a wave back, but she noticed that isabel and nicole were already waving back at him.

oh, that was awkward, she thought.

conrad sent the other two girls an awkward smile before approaching stella. "you still need a dance partner or..."

"oh yeah, j just came to hang out for a bit but he left now," stella explained with a small smile still left on her face. she couldn't help but do that whenever jeremiah was around her.

her phone chimed, making both of them glance at her phone. they were best friends and they never really had anything to hide from each other, so conrad was wondering why stella was looking at her phone so sneakily.

"who is it?" he asked her curiously.

she checked her phone. it was jeremiah. stella didn't know why she felt like it was such a secret, but she lied anyway. "oh- uh, it's just... andy. so annoying."

j :)

see you later?

stella looked at the text and almost blushed. oh my god, even his texts are hot, she thought. she almost laughed at herself.

j :)

okay :)

steven slid a plate with a sandwich across the counter to jeremiah. he immediately went for one of the chips before getting interrupted by two girls behind him.

"steven, can we please get two slushies?" one of the girls asked nicely.

"yeah, yeah, coming up, ladies," steven said, backing away from the counter and into the kitchen.

the girl put her arm over the back of jeremiah's chair, making him turn around. "thank you. um, that was the most fun waltz rehearsal, like, in the history of waltz rehearsals," she said.

the other girl was quick to agree. "yeah. you came just in time. your girl, stella, is a disaster in heels."

jeremiah's smile immediately dropped after the last comment. "you know what? stel's actually a good dancer. the waltz is just dumb."

he turned back around, leaving the girls surprised. steven came out from behind the kitchen with the girls' slushies in perfect timing.

"here you go, ladies," he said, handing them the drinks.

"perfect. thank you, " one of them said, taking the two drinks and handing one to her friend. "there you go."

they walked away quietly, shaking their heads and mumbling things about how he was just being stupid.

"god, what was that for?" one of them scoffed.

"i know, right?" the other girl muttered. "that was so stupid."

yeah, whatever. i'm stupid, i guess, he thought to himself. but stel likes that so...

stella was the only thing on jeremiah's mind. summer had already flown by so fast and the debutante ball was coming up. not that it was any of his business, but he didn't want just anybody to take her to that dance.

he tapped his heel against the chair and rolled his eyes. he was growing impatient with himself.

fuck it, he thought.

if he was going to make a move, it had to be soon.
