"all I know since yesterday is everything has changed"

ariana's pov

the sun was just starting to rise when tara's alarm started beeping loudly, waking both of us up. tara groaned and reached to turn it off. today was the day we had been both nervous and excited about for months: our first day at university.

i got out of bed and looked around in our new dorm room. it was plain, with just a few of our things around-like pictures of me and tara, one with my family and one with my sister. there were also posters, books all over the floor, the room didn't feel like home yet. i stretched and let out a long yawn, trying to shake off the remnants of sleep.

"good morning!" tara said a cheerful voice from the other side of the room. tara was already dressed, and ready for the day. "how can you be so awake?"i muttered as i stumbled to the sink to wash my face. tara giggled. "I'm just excited! new place, new people, new adventures. what's not to love?"

i smiled a little at tara's excitement. "yeah, I guess you're right."

after getting dressed, me and tara headed headed out our dorm, making sure we locked everything. the campus was bustling with students, all eager to start their day. the smell of fresh air filled the air.however, i couldn't help but feel a bit overwhelmed by the noise and the crowd.

"hi you guys" we heard a familiar voice behind us and as we turned around we were met with an excited paige. "hi" we both said in unison. turns out, tara and paige has their first class together so they dissapeared leaving me in the middle of the campus.

i was lost. i mean, who wouldn't be? this was my first day and even though i looked up the university so i will be prepared, but i just realised i can't be prepared. it was early in the morning so i had time to find my class but i was still nervous. i hated being late and just the thought of me having to walk into the class late, while everyone is in their seat, staring at me, standing in the doorway made my stomach do blackflips. i decided, to listen to music while i walk through crowds of people to get to my destination. i was lost in my thoughts while taylor swift was playing in my ear, i couldn't hear a person shouting my name. i felt a hand on my shoulder, i flinched at the sudden touch but i calmed down after i saw who it was. it was one of the basketball girls from yesterday i think it was the one who arrived late. i didn't quite catch her name because to be honest i wasn't really paying attention.

"hi. ariana, right?" the tall girl asks me as she walks with me. "yeah, i'm sorry i didn't hear you." i looked up at her -due to our height difference- with an apologetic look. "it's alright. i noticed you looked a bit lost. do you need help finding your class?" she asked me with a bright, warm smile. "that would be amazing. i think i was walking around for 20 minutes now. i'm supposed to have a class with mrs. raghavendra." as i told her that, we heard the first bell ring. "that's not too far away. i'll walk you to class."

"are you sure?" i whispered. "don't you have a class to attend?" i asked her curiously.

"no problem, really. i would be glad to help you." she smiled at me once again. her smile is really pretty.

she then walked me to class, just in time before the bell rang. "well, thank you i'm sorry, i didn't catch your name?" i mumbled. "it's all good. don't worry it's aubrey." she answered without making me feel dumb. she has a pretty name. "aubrey. catch you later, maybe?" i inquired as i waved her a goodbye, walking into the class.

i found an empty seat so i quikly walked over to it, praying no one will sit next to me, so i can enjoy my first day, first class in my own company without having to talk to anyone. well, i guess aubrey was an expection.

the day went by quikly. nothing interesting happened in every class we took the time to introduce ourselves, the teachers are okay, but the most sympathetic teacher to me was the teacher, mrs raghavendra in my first period. she talked about herself, and the subject she was teaching as the lecture went on, i found myself drawn in by her passion for the subject. the hour flew by, and before i knew it, the class was over.

i was in the elevator to our dorm right now. i haven't seen tara since the morning which felt so weird. she is my best friend. we have done everything with eachother ever since i could remember. and walking around the halls, the campus, sitting by myself in the back of the class, where we would always talk shit in high school. i missed her a lot. but i can't wait to get back to the dorm and talk about our days with eachother.

i stopped by our dorm room door and opened it. i found tara in the kitchen, sitting on a counter top. "ariana!" the second she noticed i was home she ran into my arms as if we haven't seen eachother in years. but this day kinda felt like it was years without her. "i missed you soooo much." tara groaned as she let go of me. "i missed you too, tara."

we walked into our shared room and tara immediately started talking about her day. i loved listening to her yap about anything. i loved seeing her this bubbly and happy. she told me something about this girl she sits with in one of her classes. "but i lowkey wish you were the one sitting next to me. this day was hell without you in it." she sighed as she flopped onto the bed. "i can say the same. today i recalled how we would always sit in the back of the classroom in high school and not even paying attention to the teacher just laughing our asses off." i trailed on with my words. "yes omg and do you remember when in biology i was drinking my water and you spilled it on me. beacuse you hit me. i was soaking wet." she stated while laughing. "hitting you is a strong word. i'd use "giving you a little nudge"."i giggled. nostalgia hit us suddenly and we were talking about our memories together till we noticed that it was already 11pm. "i think we should go to bed." i remarked as i sit up in my bed. "probably but wait, you haven't told me about your day yet." tara chimed with a smirk on her face. "nothing interesting happened." i shrugged. "yeah? and what about aubrey? a little birdie told me she walked you to your class." she stood up from her bed. walking back and forth. "i feel like roasting a bird, then. nothing happened. i was lost and she just helped me find my class." i stated blankly. "okay. i believe you. you can go." she waved me off.

as i was laying in bed, i couldn't stop thinking. but there was nothing to think about. i was turning side to side in my bed. the big campus, the friendly students, the interesting classes, it was all so new and exciting. i felt a sense of belonging starting to grow inside of me. the university, with all its challenges and opportunities, was beginning to feel like home.

with a contented sigh, i closed my eyes and drifted off to sleep, ready for whatever tomorrow would bring.
