a/n - this gif is just wow.

Students of all ages swarmed platform nine and three quarters as y/n stepped through the wall with her luggage and owl in tow. She hadn't had the chance to get changed into her Hogwarts uniform as her muggle parents had driven her there, and considering their already-formed opinion of her and the fact that she was a witch, she had decided that it would be best that way. The entire drive there had been filled with small comments about how "strange" she was and that she was wasting her life at "that stupid witchy school". Letting out a deep sigh, y/n hurried along the platform, anxious to get a good seat on the train.

As she boarded the train and found herself an empty compartment, she could almost laugh at the difference between this journey and the one that had taken place only months before. On her way home from school before the summer, her train compartment had been full with her boyfriend and her friends, the sound of laughter and jokes probably spilling out into the corridor as the five Gryffindors spoke for what she didn't know was going to be the last time for three entire months. That was before the summer, the summer where she spent every single day waiting for a letter from anyone: Remus, Sirius, Peter, even Lily or Marlene, but most importantly, James. None came.

She had to admit that at first, she was upset, but as the holidays went on, all she could feel was anger and bitterness. If her friends, if James, didn't want to talk to her anymore, they should have just told her, instead of making her wait for letters that weren't going to come.

Y/n settled back into the cosy train seat and dug her book out of her bag. It was going to be a long train ride to Hogwarts and if she was going to distract herself then she would have to dive into a good story.

Not even ten minutes into her reading, the compartment door opened and four recognisable faces appeared at the glass. Sirius was trying to grab Remus' Prefect tie out of his hands, Peter was already munching on what y/n guessed was his second or third chocolate frog and James....James was standing in silence, looking at her. To y/n's surprise, his glare could have pierced holes through the glass door. It wasn't until the four Gryffindors had entered the train compartment and Sirius had managed to clear the air by making a joke about how many girls he was going to take to Hogsmeade that year, when James finally spoke up. He was sitting as far away from her as she thought he could possibly get. Again, she was annoyed that he wasn't trying to explain what was going on.

"So, I'm guessing that you had a fabulous summer holiday then, yeah?" He muttered with a slight sneer. Remus and Sirius exchanged glances, both looking slightly uneasy and like they wanted to be anywhere else at that current moment. Peter continued to eat his snacks in peace, oblivious to the awkward tension in their train compartment.

"I really didn't. Like you care anyway," She muttered back, eyes focused on the empty space between Sirius and Peter that was directly in front of her. She heard him scoff, but he continued to look out of the window at the passing countryside. Y/n thought that it was usually a pleasant view, but today it seemed like even the beautiful scenery couldn't brighten her mood.

She stuffed the hardcover novel back into her shoulder bag and placed it over her shoulder, standing up so that they would know she was leaving. Before she left, she turned her body towards him, making it evident that she was speaking to him.

"I wanted to talk to you but forget it, James. I'm over it just as much as you seem to be," She shrugged and glanced apologetically at the other boys as she reached to slide the door open.

Two footsteps came crashing to the ground as James quickly stood up. When she turned back around to see what all of the commotion was about, his eyes were stormy and he motioned for their friends to leave them alone for a minute. Surprisingly, Sirius made no fuss about it. That was severely out of character for him, y/n thought.

"Me? Don't blame this whole mess on me, it's clearly you who has the problem...so what is it then? Is it some bloody muggle that you've fallen in love with?" He asked, rolling his eyes to make it seem like he didn't care that much about the question. Y/n was shocked, she hadn't expected this kind of outburst from him. She thought that they just would sweep the issue under the rug and ignore each other for the foreseeable future.

"Merlin's beard, Potter, what are you talking about? You didn't visit, you didn't write, nothing! During the entire summer. It was like I didn't exist!" Her hands moved around the now empty compartment, gesturing wildly, showing how upset she really was. It was James' turn to look shocked. During her outburst, his eyes moved back and forth between his girlfriend's face and a spot to her left, trying to figure things out. Y/n noticed his faraway expression and crossed her arms over her chest.

He met her gaze again and mindlessly pointed his finger at nothing in particular.

"But I did y/n/n. I did write to you, numerous times actually and so did the others. That's why I was so pissed off earlier, I thought that you just didn't bother to reply to my letters," He told her, questions flying around in the brain as he spoke. Y/n thought about it myself.

"So..what you're saying is that...somehow, somebody took your letters and that's why I didn't get them??" She thought aloud, having a very good idea who that person, or rather, those people, could be.

James nodded but snorted and clapped his hands slowly.

"Wow, y/n, I'm really surprised that you weren't placed in Ravenclaw. Nothing gets past you, eh? You think that it was your parents?" She chuckled in response to his teasing.

"Shut up, Prongs. Don't act like you're not the stupidest person I've ever met. And yeah, I do, it sounds like them," She confirmed. She should have known that they would do something like this but she was still surprised at the lengths they would go to.

James sighed dramatically and sat back down in his seat, still facing her.

"And there I was, heartbroken at home, Sirius collecting my tears in a little bowl," He shook his head, which only made her laugh and sit down across from him.

"Did somebody shout for me?" Sirius Black popped his head through the crack in the sliding door, a grin evident on his face. He was followed by an annoyed-looking Remus. He thew himself down next to James and put an arm around his best friend's shoulder.

"So, we're all a-ok then, yeah? Because Remus and I were very concerned that I was going to have to deal with a divorce this early in the term, that's not good for my health, you know that guys?" He sighed deeply and placed his arm back at his own side.

All three of his companions groaned, already debating if putting up with Sirius' drama for another whole year was worth it.

"For once in your life, Padfood, shut up."
