Damon walks inside the private kitchen to see Kol savagely ripping apart a blood bag.
"Woah slow down big guy. Other people got to eat too." Damon wolf whistles with a small smirk.
Kol puts his head down breathing heavily. And Damon sighs with a small roll of his eyes. "She would kill you if she saw you right now. She would whoop your ass actually."
"Stop." Kol whispers barely audible, but Damon heard him.
"She never wanted this for you. She loved you like you were her big brother. You were the only Mikaelson she freely talked about before a few months ago. She talked about how much she missed you and wished she could have saved you. It haunted her all of these years." Damon continues, emphasizing the word 'haunted'.
"Stop!" Kol yells turning around with veins running up the bags under his eyes.
"But she continued on with her every day life. For you. She said that she knew you wouldn't have wanted her to waste her and her kids life away because of your death. That she had to be better for you." Damon shouts, raising his voice. "Yet here you are! Digging yourself a hole and isolating yourself from everyone."
Kol turns again, his back facing Damon as he stares emotionally at the blank white wall.
"Because they aren't her." Damon finishes in a whisper. "Because they aren't her you don't want to talk to anyone. You don't want to continue on with your every day life because it'll feel like you're betraying her. Like you're forgetting all about her." Damon stresses as he tries to get Kol to see his point.
"How do you go on?" Kol questions, his eyes beginning to water. "How do you walk through these halls knowing she walked them every day. That she won't ever be able to again. That she won't be waiting for you in her office or cuddled up with her kids. How do you smell her Perfume every time you pass her room and not think about how she held you like a mother would to her kids when you felt like the world was crashing down? How do you live, with the fact that... she's gone." Kol sobs, finally letting all of his emotions be shown on display for the first time since the funeral.
Damon is taken back by the Mikaelson and stands there baffled for a second before clearing his throat. "You don't forget her. You don't forget her perfume. You don't forget her voice. Personally I listen to this every day." Damon admits, unlocking his phone and clicking a few buttons before throwing his phone on the table.
"Hey dames..." Kol's brow shifts into pain when he hears her voice. "I don't know where you and Kol are... Me and Elena have been looking for you guys for hours... if you're fighting about who's my favorite just know that I don't have one. I love you both equally." Her loud laugh is heard through the phone as they hear her and Elena whispering in the back round. "Well when you idiots finally decide to come home, we have food put away for you two. I love you, oh and tell Kol that he missed movie night with the girls and they are not happy! Bye!" The voice mail ends.
"That keeps me going during the day. That makes me look at everyone around me and think of how grateful I feel for having them. It makes me look at all of her kids and see a little bit of her in them. And I know I'm going to be just fine. Because it's what she would've wanted." He says, analyzing Kol's facial features.
"Thank you Damon." He whispers, and for the first time in their lives they were grateful for the others existence.
Damon nods his head with a soft smile.
After a couple of moments of tense silence Kol says. "Your brother is a bloody idiot for leaving those kids behind."
"Oh I'm not even claiming him this time." Damon shrugs with an eye roll. Both men laugh together.
Although Damon was truly disappointed and angry with his brother. He knew he had a habit of running. But running from those kids would be the worst mistake of his life, Damon was sure of it.
Alec is the first one of his siblings to awake from their naps in the Mikaelson mansion. He gasps out for air as he opens his eyes, looking around in confusion.
He then remembers how he ended up here and let's out a small smile at the sight of his sisters cuddled into his sides, though it quickly disappears when he remembers his dream.
His mother backing away from him like he had shot her. But really it was just his words that wounded her. And then it would transform into her getting her heart torn out by Hayley.
He gently slips away from his sisters and leans his head into his hands, not noticing Klaus watching his every move near the painting.
"Why?" Klaus speaks up quietly, careful not to wake the others.
His voice startles Alec who nearly jumps from his skin before speaking. "Why what?"
"Why are you feeling guilty?" Klaus questions, genuinely curious. He knew this must've been the reason why he was distancing himself from everyone and it had to do with Cami.
"Why do you think I feel guilty?" Alec questions, with a quizzical look in his eyes.
"Because you wear the same expressions I did for years after I left your mother, every time I woke up. She would haunt my dreams and it took weeks for me to be able to have a night of peaceful sleep." Klaus admits, hoping to make him comfortable enough to share his thoughts.
"I said something that hurt her. It was right before she ran to save aunt Caroline... she looked at me with so much hurt. Her eyes were watery. And sometimes I think she was so willing to die because of what I said." Alec admits, feeling a giant weight being lifted off of his chest because he finally told someone.
Klaus took a moment to think over all of the possible things Alec could've said to hurt Camilla so much. "What did you say?"
"I... I told her I knew who my parents were. And I said that I found my real mother." He trails off with regret imbedded in his voice.
Klaus' eyes widen a bit, but is careful not to make the boy feel worse. In her last moments alive, Alec had completely broken her heart. Deep down, Klaus knew she didn't blame the boy a bit. She loved him no matter what he did or said to her.
"I didn't mean it like that..." Alec sniffles a bit.
"She knows." Klaus interrupts him sternly. Making Alecs head snap up. "She knows you didn't mean it like that. She doesn't blame you nor does anyone else for her death. She loves you no matter what you say or do. She's living in peace, in a better place than this. She misses you, but she does not blame you. You need to stop blaming yourself. She wouldn't want you to."
He said it because he knew it was true and the boy needed to hear it. Camilla would snap Klaus' neck if he didn't. And Klaus didn't want all of this guilt on the young boys shoulders for something that wasn't even his fault.
Alec is silent for a couple of minutes before gulping. "Why are you doing this?"
His question catches Klaus off guard. "Doing what?"
"Helping me. Helping my sisters and brother. Me, Lizzie, and Josie aren't even your children but you're looking after us. Why?" He continues.
"Truth be told, I was recently informed about your mother watching over me these past seventeen years. I see little pieces of her in all of you. I thought it was time I'd repay her. I see you all as practically my kids too, please don't ever feel too stubborn to come knocking on my door if you need anything." Klaus says sincerely.
Alec nods his head and gets up to leave when Hope begins to stir awake along with the rest of them. "What's happening?" Lizzie groans.
"I'm leaving, do you guys want a ride?" Alec questions as he waves around his keys.
"Um... do you guys want to stay? My rooms really big and we have a pull out couch I can bring out?" Hope asks hopefully, feeling the need to stay close to her siblings.
All of the siblings look to each other hopeful but then look at Alec and their Hope lowers. Alec glances towards Klaus who gives him an encouraging smirk.
"Yeah... yeah we'll stay. I'll just call Caroline since Alaric is away helping a wolf or something." Alec responds, shocking them all before walking away to call his aunt.
Hours later Caroline is sitting across from Elijah outside of the Mystic grill with a cup of Coffee in her hand. "I want to do something. But I don't think I can do it alone." Caroline says lowly.
Elijah sits straighter in his seat at this. "I'll be here. What is it?"
"I wanted to call Stefan... it's just whenever he leaves he gets himself into these unhealthy life styles and I don't want him to fall apart. I'm angry that he left the kids but..." she trails off, looking towards a group of older friends laughing together inside.
"You still care for him. That's understandable Caroline." Elijah assures her, squeezing her hand in comfort.
She nods with a small smile before pulling her phone out.
"Caroline?" Stefan questions curiously.
"Stefan..." She whispers surprised that he even answered. Usually whenever something happened and he left town he would refuse to answer any of their calls.
"What's up?" He asks casually, as if he wasn't in love with her sister who died a few months back.
"What's up? What's up is that no one has heard from you since my sisters funeral." Caroline hisses quietly, her anger rising.
"Listen Caroline... I've moved on. You should too. She's not coming back." Stefan says though she heard his sharp inhale of breath at the mention of Cami's funeral.
"Well are you actually okay? Where are..." She stops in the middle of her sentence when she hears a voice in the background.
"Hey Stef! Are you coming back to bed or what?" A girl giggles in the background. Her nickname telling Caroline that they were familiars.
"You're with some one else." Caroline says, her voice cracking. "She just passed away and you're with another girl."
"Listen Caroline I have to go." Stefan whispers before hanging up the phone.
Caroline covers her mouth in sadness and disbelief. Elijahs furrowed brows indicate he was feeling a fraction what she was. He understood.
"He... he moved on from her already. She was just buried months ago and he's moved on." She says like it was the worst thing in the world. Which in their world it was.
Stefan and Camilla were supposed to be this epic love story. But as soon as she died he high tailed it out of Mystic Falls and moved on.
"Not all people deal with grief the same way Caroline." He softly reminds the woman, but even he had his doubts. Stefan Salvatore was no longer grieving over his dead wife in their minds.
She nods her head before standing up abruptly. "Come on."
Elijah follows Caroline into the car silently passing her the keys to his Mercedes and sitting in the passenger seat.
He doesn't question her motives but he fully understands what's going on when they park outside of the Cemetery.
They both silently step out of the car and onto the pathway towards the grave that they both dreaded yet needed to see.
Caroline gasps when she gets the the grave. It was covered in dozens of yellow and blue painted roses.
"Did..." Elijah interrupts Caroline's spoken thoughts. "I believe it was my brother."
Caroline bends down to pick up a letter that looked dirty and older. Like it had been there for months. "This isn't though." She whispers.
Opening the letter she lets a few tears drop before handing it to Elijah with out looking away from her sisters grave.
Dear Cami,
Maybe it was because I died and came back years later. Maybe it was because we both changed into completely different people.
But it just wasn't the same anymore. I think we both knew it but didn't want to address it. I was in love with you for a very long time. When I was at peace after dying I talked to Lexi about you the whole time. She practically knew every detail about your life.
If you happen to see her I apologize in advance for all she knows about you. But I was so mesmerized by you at the time that I couldn't help it.
I think we were always meant to love each other. We had our hearts broken and had no one by our sides amidst all the typical drama that comes with living in Mystic Falls. Until we found each other. Thank you for being my savior, for saving me from drowning in my own heartbreak and pain. For sitting on my couch that night with a bottle of bourbon.
Thank you for everything. There will never be a day when you're not on my mind, or when I wish I could bring you back. Or when I'm not thankful for you. I owe you my whole life Camilla Forbes.
And because of that, I am leaving. After the funeral I'm leaving and I don't think I'll ever come back. Unless a miracle happened or if the kids ever really needed me. But they have their hands full with so many amazing people protecting them that I'm not worried at all.
I'm leaving because I know it's what you would've wanted me to do. You might have kicked my ass for not saying goodbye to everyone but what can I say? I'm a coward. You'd want me to live out the rest of my immortal life happy, and with no regrets.
So I'm leaving for you. In honor of you. I will fulfill a promise I made to you, what seems like a thousand years ago.
I promise to live my life to the fullest, to not let anything hold me back, with no regrets or unfinished business. But I know you will never truly be gone because for you, I will hold you in my heart forever Camilla Forbes.
Thank you for finally setting me free with out even knowing it.
I will always love you Cami, save a spot for me wherever you are will you?
I'll see you again one day, and I'll be able to tell you about all of my adventures and maybe even another epic love. I will move on with my life knowing this is not goodbye, but a see you later.
May we meet again,
Stefan Salvatore.
