Narrator:

โ€œThis is ridiculous!โ€ Feng Xin said, crossing his arms as he stared at Xie Lian. โ€œWhy us?โ€

Xie Lian smiled serenely, utterly unbothered by the hostility. โ€œBecause the two of you need to learn teamwork. And what better way than through dance?โ€

โ€œWeโ€™re generals, not dancersโ€ Mu Qing interjected, his voice sharp with irritation. โ€œThis is a waste of time.โ€

โ€œWhich is exactly why you should step out of your comfort zones!โ€ Xie Lian clapped his hands together. โ€œThe banquet is tomorrow, and someone needs to demonstrate the opening dance. As my loyal subordinates, itโ€™s only fitting that you two help me.โ€

โ€œWhy not you?โ€ Feng Xin demanded, his tone bordering on desperation.

โ€œIโ€™ll be busy hostingโ€ Xie Lian replied smoothly. โ€œAnd besides, this is a great opportunity for you two to bond.โ€

โ€œWe donโ€™t need bondingโ€ Mu Qing said flatly, glaring at Feng Xin.

โ€œExactly!โ€ Feng Xin agreed, pointing a finger at Mu Qing. โ€œIโ€™d rather bond with a brick wall!โ€

Mu Qingโ€™s eyes narrowed. โ€œThe feelingโ€™s mutual.โ€

Xie Lian sighed, placing a hand over his heart as if wounded. โ€œSo much hostility. Donโ€™t you see how this will help? Dancing requires trust, communication and synchronization. Itโ€™ll be good for you both.โ€

Feng Xin groaned, dragging a hand down his face. โ€œFine. Letโ€™s just get this over with.โ€

โ€œDonโ€™t act like youโ€™re doing me a favorโ€ Mu Qing muttered, rolling his eyes.

โ€œI am doing you a favor." Feng Xin shot back.

Xie Lian beamed. โ€œThatโ€™s the spirit! Now, let me show you the stepsโ€

Feng Xin and Mu Qing stood stiffly opposite each other, their postures awkward and tense. Xie Lian circled them, offering pointers.

โ€œFeng Xin, youโ€™re the lead. Extend your hand to Mu Qing.โ€

Feng Xin hesitated, his hand hovering in the air. โ€œDo I really have to?-โ€

โ€œYesโ€ Xie Lian said firmly.

Grumbling under his breath, Feng Xin finally extended his hand. Mu Qing eyed it like it was a venomous snake before reluctantly placing his hand in Feng Xinโ€™s.

โ€œThis is so uncomfortable...โ€ Mu Qing muttered.

โ€œYouโ€™re the one making it weirdโ€ Feng Xin snapped. โ€œJust relax.โ€

โ€œRelax?โ€ Mu Qing scoffed. โ€œYouโ€™re gripping my hand like youโ€™re about to throw me into a battlefield.โ€

โ€œWell, maybe I should!โ€

โ€œEnough, you two!โ€ Xie Lian intervened, clapping his hands. โ€œNow, Mu Qing, place your other hand on Feng Xinโ€™s shoulder. Feng Xin, yours goes on his waist.โ€

Both men froze.

โ€œWait, what?โ€ They said in unison.

โ€œOn his waistโ€ Xie Lian repeated patiently. โ€œItโ€™s standard positioning.โ€

โ€œNo way!โ€ Feng Xin protested.

โ€œI agree!โ€ Mu Qing added, stepping back.

Xie Lian sighed, rubbing his temples. โ€œYouโ€™re acting like children. Just do it, or weโ€™ll be here all night.โ€

Reluctantly, Feng Xin placed his hand on Mu Qingโ€™s waist, his fingers twitching as if the mere act physically pained him. Mu Qing stiffened, glaring daggers at him.

โ€œWatch where youโ€™re putting that hand....โ€ Mu Qing hissed.

โ€œItโ€™s literally where itโ€™s supposed to be!โ€ Feng Xin snapped back.

โ€œGood!โ€ Xie Lian said cheerfully, ignoring their bickering. โ€œNow, follow my lead. One, two, three...โ€

Feng Xin tried to move but Mu Qing stepped on his foot almost immediately.

โ€œOw!โ€ Feng Xin yelped, hopping on one leg. โ€œAre you trying to hurt me?โ€

โ€œMaybe if you werenโ€™t so clumsy, I wouldnโ€™t have stepped on you!โ€ Mu Qing retorted.

โ€œIโ€™m clumsy? Youโ€™re the one stomping around like a horse!โ€

โ€œAt least Iโ€™m not dragging my feet like a stubborn ox!โ€

โ€œStop insulting me!โ€

โ€œThen stop being insufferable!โ€

โ€œGentlemen!โ€ Xie Lian raised his voice, his calm tone cracking slightly. โ€œThis is not how a dance works. You need to work together.โ€

โ€œTell that to himโ€ Mu Qing muttered, jerking his thumb at Feng Xin.

โ€œMe?โ€ Feng Xin barked. โ€œYouโ€™re the one acting like this is a duel!โ€

Xie Lian pinched the bridge of his nose. โ€œPerhaps we should try again tomorrow.โ€
_

Several hours and countless arguments later, Feng Xin and Mu Qing finally managed a clumsy rendition of the steps. They were out of breath, their faces red..not from exertion but from sheer frustration.

โ€œDonโ€™t you dare tell anyone about this" Feng Xin said, glaring at Mu Qing.

โ€œAs if Iโ€™d want anyone knowing I danced with youโ€ Mu Qing shot back, his nose wrinkling in distaste.

Xie Lian watched them with a satisfied smile. โ€œSee? Youโ€™re already more in sync. Who knows by tomorrow, you might even enjoy it.โ€

โ€œNot a chance.โ€ Both men muttered simultaneously, only to freeze as their matching responses registered. Xie Lian chuckled softly, leaving them to stew in their shared mortification.
