( 029. 'meeting the madisons ' )
IT WAS AROUND 10 p.m., and the soft hum of the tv filled the living room. ariella, still curled up on the couch with walker, was still comfortably deeply asleep, snoring as she laid on walkers chest. walker, equally as comfortable, had his head resting on top of hers, both of them tangled in blankets. the peacefulness of the moment made him smile as he scrolled through his phone.
ariella's mom, mrs. madison, emerged from the kitchen with a cup of tea in hand, her eyes narrowing slightly as she caught sight of the couple on the couch. the corner of her lips twitched upward, but she quickly masked her smile, not wanting to interrupt too abruptly.
"hmm," she said, clearing her throat lightly. "what's going on here, then?"
ariella stirred slightly but didn't fully wake up. walker, on the other hand, quickly straightened up and smiled awkwardly. "hey, mrs. madison," he greeted her, nervous as hell may i add.
"hey, walker," she replied, taking in the sight of them together. she wasn't angry, not in the slightest. but it was still a sight to behold. her daughter, who always had her guard up about relationships, relaxed enough to let someone in. "i hope you two are having fun. you know, it's still a little early for the whole falling asleep on the couch thing," she said with a knowing smile.
ariella, half asleep, mumbled something incoherent, her hand instinctively reaching for walker's.
walker chuckled softly, not wanting to disturb her. "yeah, we've had a pretty busy day."
"well, i'm glad you two are getting along so well," Mrs. Madison said, smiling. "but, if you don't mind me asking, i think i've waited long enough to meet your parents, walker."
walker blinked, clearly surprised by the question. "myβwhat?" he stammered. "uh, well, yeah, i guess. it's just, you know, we're still kind of... figuring everything out."
ariellas mom raised an eyebrow, watching walkers face turn absolutely red. "don't be silly. i've been hearing about your family for a while now, its all my daughter talks about but i think it's time i finally meet them. it's only fair, right?"
"yes ma'am, you're right," walker said, rubbing the back of his neck nervously. "i'll have to talk to them about when, but i'm sure they'd love to meet you too."
"good," Mrs. Madison said with a smile. "then it's settled. next time we all have a chance, we'll have a family dinner. i'll make sure to cook something nice."
a week later !
a few days later, walker's family was seated around the madison dinner table. walker had made the trip over with his parents, and his sister leena, who had kindly agreed to join the meal. although tanner stayed at a friends house. ariella's mom had already prepared a spread of chicken, mashed potatoes, and fresh salad. the the room was warm and casual, everyone laughing and chatting easily, as if they'd known each other for years instead of just a few days.
ariella's mom, mrs. Madison, and walker's mom, mrs. scobell, had already hit it off, bonding over their love of cooking and very embarrassing childhood stories about their kids. walker sat next to ariella, who was trying her best not to laugh at how intensely her mom was grilling him with questions. it was mostly harmless, but ariella could tell her mom had a genuine interest in getting to know walker. which she loved because her mom hated every boy ariella had brought over, even though shed only brought over 1 before.
"so, walker, your mom tells me you love vacations? where do you like to go?" ariellas mom asked, holding her fork up in the air.
walker paused to think for a moment before answering. "id say somewhere close to the beach. we go to cape cod a lot. our family rents a house there, and we go and spend the whole week just relaxing, playing beach volleyball, and eating way too much seafood. it the best part of every summer."
ariella smiled at the mention of the beach. "i love the beach too. we always go to the Outer banks."
walker's eyes lit up at that. "really? that's awesome. we should go together sometime," he said, glancing over at her with a playful grin.
her mom, overhearing, leaned forward, an intrigued look on her face. "that's actually a great idea," she said. "you two could really use a vacation. maybe it's time for a change of scenery, get away from all this influencer stuff. you know, we've been talking about family trips, and i was just telling ariellas dad we need to go somewhere this summer."
ariella turned to her mom, suddenly curious. "wait, what do you mean by we've been talking family trips'?"
mrs. madison smiled and gave her a teasing look. "well, funny you should ask. your father and i had decided to switch it up and go to cape cod this summer, but heres whats really funny" she paused dramatically, glancing over at walker's mom with a grin, "we got places right next to each other. so it looks like you two are going to be spending a whole week together. family vacation!"
ariella's jaw dropped, and she turned to look at Walker. his eyes widened in surprise, his lips curling into a grin.
"you're kidding," ariella said, her voice filled with disbelief.
"not even a little," ari and walkers mom said at the same time, replying with a wink.
"it's honestly a complete coincidence," mrs. scobell said with a chuckle, holding up her glass of water. "i mean i know the house beside ours was up for rent this summer and then just this week, when i was talking to ariellas mom, i found out she had rented it!"
ariella let out a small laugh, shaking her head in disbelief. "okay, wow. this is... insane."
"yeah, i didn't know what to say," walker added, still grinning at the whole situation. "a vacation like this? right next door?"
"well, the good thing is," mrs. scobell chimed in, "you two will have plenty of opportunities to hang out. and me and your mom can bond! "
ariella's smile slowly spread across her face as she processed it. a whole week with Walker... away from home... just the two of them, and their families. she couldn't help but feel excited about what this would mean.
"i'm actually kind of pumped now," ariella admitted, her tone light but filled with genuine excitement. "it's going to be... interesting."
