As far as (Y/n) was concerned all the pieces were in place for her plan to be put into action and foil Light's own from when he'd consciously been Kira.

Higuchi turned out to be hugely predictable, going through the motions exactly how Light (as Kira), L and she had anticipated on separate occasions. With Misa safely out of the country for the next week or so and (Y/n) ignoring his calls, they'd expected him to begin driving out to Yoshida Productions in order to obtain "Matsui's" real name before Higuchi's identity could be revealed or further damage could be brought to Yotsuba.

The surveillance installed by L's contact, Wedy, had proven to be exceptionally helpful now as the Task Force tracked Higuchi's frenzied chase through the city. Even more so for her as someone who had all sides of the story at all times, making her the only one who immediately understood the gravity of the third Kira's actions when he made the eye deal with Rem.

It wasn't all that alarming. Her plans wouldn't be affected. Besides, this too had been accounted for, even though the possible loss of innocent life was a concerning downside.

It only took the death of a traffic control officer at Higuchi's hands for L to realize what their suspect had done and get the detective spurring into action, instructing the officers to make an arrest as soon as possible while he lead (Y/n) and Light to the rooftop where a helicopter awaited them, much to the bewilderment of the Yagami siblings.

Sure, she had counted on L getting them on the scene, but something as extravagant as a helicopter had been a little too far out of sight even for her. Just how rich was the greatest detective?

"It appears that Mr. Yagami has been shot in the midst of Higuchi's escape from Sakura TV," L muttered, barely heard over the rush of air and the sound of the rotor.

It was enough, however. (Y/n) hadn't been expecting to feel any sort of alarm during the chase, let alone a shock of this magnitude. For a horrifying moment, she wondered if her heart had just given out in her chest.

"What?!" Light cried out, eyes wide, hand gripping hers from his seat next to her. His grip was tight enough to feel like it was cutting off her circulation, but felt almost reassuring in its familiarity.

L nodded, somber as he regarded them with a heavy gaze. "It isn't a critical wound," he elaborated. "A shot to the arm, it seems. Your father claims to be fine and is already following Higuchi towards the police roadblock we've set up."

"I'd like to request to hit the Unsub once we've arrested him," she voiced, barely managing to catch her breath from the gravity of the scare the thought of losing her father had provided.

Smiling slightly, L nodded. "I'll allow it."

Light frowned at her. "Hit him for me too."

Even as she agreed, (Y/n) couldn't meet Light's gaze anymore, the panic having subsided. She didn't want to face the fact that if all went as planned, within the next few days, Light's identity as Kira would be outed. Furthermore, she'd be losing this innocent version of her brother in a matter of minutes.

Although, perhaps the latter was for the best. After all, she'd like to stop feeling so conflicted and tempted to change her intention so she could preserve his innocence. Light, as Kira, had set off a chain of events that she couldn't undo. All (Y/n) could do was redirect those events so they favored her will over her brother's.

"We have visual on Higuchi," L announced, leaning forward to peer out at what was occurring below. "Watari, kindly do as planned."

The elderly man, seated beside L and armed with a sniper, nodded once and promptly fired, precisely taking out Higuchi's front wheel, putting a swift end to their suspect's movements, giving the police their chance at apprehending the third Kira.

"Nice shot, Mr. Watari," (Y/n) complimented absently, leaning around Light to catch sight of what was happening for herself.

Smiling, the man dipped his head at her. "Thank you, Ms. (Y/n)."

Still refusing to refer to me with anything less formal, then.

"Higuchi's got a gun," Light observed, alarmed.

That problem was swiftly taken care of by another well aimed shot by the elderly gentleman, and soon enough, Higuchi was arrested on suspicions of being Kira.

Grinning, feeling more than a little victorious thus far, (Y/n) repeated, "Nice shot, Mr. Watari." The man chuckled, shaking his head at her in presumed fondness.

She decided she'd miss his constant presence once all this was over. And it would be soon enough.

While her father and Mogi forced a helmet-like communication device onto Higuchi, the occupants of the helicopter put on headsets of their own. Shifting to give herself a better viewing point, (Y/n) exhaled slowly. For things to go her way, she needed to be vigilante and say the right thing at the right time or everything would jeopardized.

L asked Higuchi about his method of killing and after a moment of blubbering about magical notebooks, he gave up the Death Note, handing it to Soichiro who let out a startled yell at the sight of Rem in Higuchi's backseat. (Y/n) waited until Mogi had also touched the Note along with two other officers before interrupting any further movement.

"That's physical evidence you're all contaminating."

Freezing, L turned to her, nodding stiffly in realization of a fact that had slipped him. "Very good point, (Y/n)," he conceded. "No one else is to touch that notebook, Mr. Yagami. Have it sent to the forensics' department immediately, please, and ensure they have handwriting analysts on hand while you're it. I want results as soon as possible," L instructed, and with a vague sense of relief, she watched as a zip-lock bag was produced to store the Note before it was carried away.

And, now, to bring back Kira.

Flicking her wrist so that the paper carefully hidden in her sleeve slid down into her awaiting palm while L and Light were both distracted and Watari was occupied with piloting, she let it brush against Light before tossing the paper aside, letting the torrents of wind carry it away before anyone noticed.

The change was instantaneous. Light's form went rigid as his memories returned, eyes wide and sweat forming on the arch of his brow. Then, the poor attempt at masking his frustration and horror as he realized the discrepancy from his plan and the fact that he was well and truly at risk of having his cover blown.

L noticed. Of course he did. "Is something wrong, Light?" the detective asked, eyeing the younger male.

Jumping, Light shook his head, trying for his usual unassuming smile. "No. No, of course not."

But he'd just given himself away. Not only was the amnesiac version of Light a primarily honest person, he didn't put on airs with fake smiles and empty lies either. It wasn't hard to notice the 180 in Light's personality for anyone decently intelligent enough to do so.

However, L didn't comment on it. Shooting Light a final unconvinced stare, he returned his attention to overseeing the happenings on the ground, giving (Y/n) the opportunity to make her own move.

"Hey," she placed a hand on her brother's knee, "you okay?"

Light stared at her for a long moment before turning away, going for his watch with a barely concealed frenzy in his motions as he pulled on its crown thrice only for an empty compartment to slide out, making his eyes widen as horror truly settled in because Higuchi would definitely squeal about the fake rules he'd had Ryuk write and the forensic department would find the physical evidence L needed to convict Light in the first place, and it had all gone wrong.

The paper from the Death Note was supposed to be in his watch. He was sure of it. He needed to get rid of Higuchi as soon as possible. The man was a liability.

"Light?" his sister called again, frowning again.

For a moment, Light was convinced it was her fault some how, but there was no way for (Y/n) to know of his plan since she hadn't been in the country at the time he'd put it into action. His sister had been in the States when he's agreed to go into confinement after switching ownership of the Notes. She couldn't possibly know, right?

"Perhaps the excitement has gotten to Light," L suggested. "There is plenty to be done for now, Light, but don't worry. It'll all be over soon enough."

That's what Light was afraid of.
