German.
A subject that concluded a mix of german literature and German language, ranging from things like analysing historical texts and making educated inferences, along with creative and persuasive writing. It was neither bad, or good. Simply just a tolerable, mediocre lesson that filled up felecie's timetable. Felecie, was a student in this one particular German class and to say the least, she was absolutely shit at it.
Despite it even being her own language butโ ehem, that was besides the point.
So imagine her surprise when she was in the same class asโ
Michael.
Oh, and not any old Michael, butโ
Michael-fucking-Kaiserโ type of Michael.
"..."
Though, her surprise was short-lived when she found out she was in a mixed abilities class. So yeah, she could see why he was in her class. But besides the prodigy Kaiser who supposedly got high grades, there was also maribel who often times obtained some of the highest grades in this 'mixed-abilities' class of theirs. Of course, not that many people were particularly aware of this fact, or they seemed to just overlook it. She couldn't really blame them, Kaiser was in their class after all and so it was only natural of him to take the spotlight. But how did Felecie know this fact, you ask?
Well, Maribel and Felecie were somewhat acquainted and so it quickly became a habit to share their results. But it was also because the class frequently did peer-review, something about how it 'helps students develop lifelong skills in assessing and providing feedback to others, and also how it equips them with skills to self-assess and improve their own work'. The words were drilled into her head by their teacher at this point. Felecie could only wish she'd put half as much effort into memorising poems instead. Sigh.
The statement itself was quite ironic. This class was filled with dumb pupils, aside from the two smarty-pants, but nevertheless, majority of the population in this classroom swarmed with dumb idiots. So pray do tell me, what can dumb people learn from other dumb people? Probably the smartest question she ever came up with, and most likely the only one she could come up with. Hah. However despite her idiocy, her luck made up for it in overwhelming amounts, e.g. she seemed to always have Maribel's book when peer-assessing???
Though that luck was kind of useless since she couldn't even read a single word in Maribel's book. Her handwriting was quite... atrocious.
"..."
So the time she could've spent gaining knowledge from Maribel's work was all for nought.
A built in gate-keep method???
Today as well, she was blessed with amazing 'luck' and once again had Maribel's work to 'assess'. Normally, she'd start by trying to read it but there was no need today, she's already learnt her lesson after plenty of attempts, and just no. She quickly gave it the highest marking level available, as usual, before leaning back in her chair. A strange doodle along with a random scribble caught her eye within the margin of the book. Aside from Maribel's being a genius in german, she really wasn't that much of a genius, she was also quite good at drawing, but this one was quiteโ intriguing? Oh, lord. what is thaโ?
A sudden chain of goosebumps crawled up her spine, putting a stop to her inner monologue, ewya. Felecie's relaxed posture was quick to stiffen at Kaiser's chilling stare.
Oh, right. It wasn't mentioned clearly, but Kaiser and Felecie were desk partners.
Yep.
At first, Felecie was scared shitless. She had obviously heard the rumours surrounding Kaiser and his harsh countenance, but it was quick to fade away when he had not said a word to her. He wasn't as bad as people made him out to be, that's what she thought.
wrong.
The two always minded their own business, never bothering each other and so the lessons were peaceful. Though Felecie would argue it was more awkward than peaceful. And so, it seemed over the course of the two sitting next to each other, Felecie had gotten comfortable. Well, at least too comfortable for Kaiser's liking. She had one day asked him a random question which he responded with silence, completely dismissing her existence. His reaction was completely unexpected, so when she had repeated her inquiry and asked him if he had heard her, he was quick to shut her up with something along the lines of, "you're dumb so don't speak to me, otherwise your idiocy will spread to me."
The words were obviously impactful, leaving behind a scar of humiliation and stopping her from ever speaking to such a conceited guy again. This was exactly why Maribel is the better smarter person in this class, she nodded to herself, absentminded to the look of disgust sent by Kaiser. Right! She had completely lost track of thought thinking back on their previous interaction, why the hell is Kaiser staring in this direction?!
Please tell me I don't have something on my faceโ! Her gaze followed his line of sight and it seemed to be centred onโ Maribel's work?
"..." Hmm, can he by chance read this writing..? He must be able to! It's Maribel's work as well, so it's bound to be good! Why else would he be so fixated on it? Hmm, but does he know it's her work..?
"Uhh... Kaiser? do you want to know whose this is?"
"..."
"Kaisโ"
"You'd usually think someone'd learn their lesson after a past mistake,"
"...huh?" She froze from the abrupt interruption, and why the hell was he suddenly bringing up something that was too complicated for her to even understand??
"But you're an idiot after all, so that explains it." He shrugged, averting his gaze towards the window with his chin resting on his fist. An indirect gesture to end the conversation, if you it could even call it that in the first place.
"..." Felecie reeled back at his sour mood, damn, who pissed in his cereal this time?
Mikey actually did.
"Uhh... you've just been stariโ" she quickly clamped her mouth shut when he gave her a nasty side-glare. Eep! When does lesson end? I want to get out of here!
Whilst Felecie cried internal tears of anguish, it seemed her pleas were heard. And so she was once again blessed with her ultimate luck, the bell's ringing, more commonly known as the end of the lesson. Finally, I can get out of here!
"Ahโ! Alright class. That's it for today. If you wish to see your mock grades, you can stay behind." The teacher announced, stealing away Kaiser's attention from Felecie who breathed out a sigh of relief, phew. I don't think I could take it anymore.
With her awaited approval to leave the classroom, the students wasted no time in standing up to pack their things whilst simultaneously chatting away with friends. Kaiser was amongst one of those students, smoothly doing as mentioned but rather than conversing with these idiots, he settled his gaze on yesterday's mvp, Maribel, who had been strangely quiet this whole lesson. Has she always been this quiet?
Not necessarily, no. Usually, she'd be quietly speaking to her desk partner, or the friend behind her, but Kaiser wouldn't know that. He never really had payed attention to her, so it's only natural he wouldn't know. Actually, maybe he had noticed at some point, but it didn't really stick to his mind. Before yesterday's fateful events, there was no need to remember such detail about her. After all, he had not known who she was and so what point would there be to put that much effort into memorising the mannerisms of a stranger? He had already abandoned that habit of his.
And what the hell was up with that irrational act of his earlier? Since when did he become soโ so illogical? Likeโ it was right there in front of him. In front of the idiot beside him, was the book that clearly belonged to the person who drew the actual drawing, the one who had mocked his name. The one that had intriguedโ it was all there. What kind of idiot would refuse objective evidence? I'm not an idiotโ when had Kaiser's emotion become so easily swayed? When had his judgement become so clouded with subjectivity?
He always, always made sure to keep them at bay. For fucks sakeโ there was an even a moment in his life where he was devoid of any of it. So why? Why? he didn't even think a moment about Felecie's request. Shit. Was it because he refused the help of others? Was it because it was a jab at his ego? Or was it becauseโ
becauseโ!
"It's mine, I drew it. I don't need you to believe me!"
"..."
Kaiser felt his thoughts slipping into dangerous waters and he drew them back to safer shores. The mock results. Right, the mock results. Focus on that instead. mere words should never have an affect on Kaiser. exactly, they don't have an effโ his gaze instinctively moved towards the topic of his inner-turmoil, Maribel, who wasn't even there anymore??? What? She must've used Kaiser's distracted state to escape the classroom. Shame, I thought we would've gotten the chance to speak again.
Of course, the disappointment was only feigned. It really wasn't a shame since he'd come to soon implement his schemes that would dispel away his sincere sadness. The thought was equally as cruel as it was inciting, ah~ how he couldn't wait to see the vehemence of her reaction.
The classroom's silence had awoken him from his reverie, indicating that he and his teacher were last ones in there, perfect. He confidently strode forward to where she awaited with her laptop, his impassive gaze reached down to stare at her hideous dye job, what possessed her to do that?
What possessed you Kaiser?
"Kaiser, you did well as usual! Here if you look here, you gotโ" her praises had fallen deaf on his ears for once, his gaze fixated itself on his grade and aโ high level B.
"..." It surely wasn't the best, but what did he expect after repeatedly refusing to write down any of his emotional interpretations. As long his grade was the highest in this dumbass class, then that in itself was... somewhat alright. His eyes moved up towards the top of the spreadsheet, searching for the section with the class average which should be a mid-level C due to the abundant number of idiots that populated this so called mixed-abilities class.
"Kaiser you should be proud of yourself you knโ"
What? He gaped absentmindedly with wide, incredulous eyes, huh? The class average was anything but mid-level C, but a high-level C? It could even pass as a low-level B! Only barely passing through the grade boundary though. It seemed the percentage score was rounded up, but still. how the fuโ? There had to be some mistake, their dumbass german teacher must've inputted a grade wrong or the spreadsheet software must've had some sort of zero-error, it had to be a miscalculation at the very least.
Kaiser was compelled to scavenge for the anonymous grade that was bound to be a blunder only to find someone with aโ mid-level A*? How, how could you mistake something like that? The A key was no where near the C key, and, and an A* to boot? No one could accidentally do something as precise as that, soโ so it really wasn't a mistake..?
"..." Whose is it?
Ah, was it even surprising anymore?
Maribel. Maribel-fucking-Ferreira
The name stood out amongst them all despite being in the same font as the rest. Was this her petty revenge for me not giving her the drawing back? He bit back a sarcastic smirk, Kaiser was anything but content at the moment. Someone had the guts to best him at academics now? Her signature was different to the one on the sheet, so it's not hersโ
Oh, but it was. The embodiment of sincerity, those words were anything but dishonesty.
How fucking amusing. He'd brood over this loss another day, today he had two specific aims to complete: get his mock grade back and prompt for a new seating plan. A new seating plan where his new partner would indulge his ennui.
"I can't see from the back with Demetrius' large head in the way." He spoke without caring for repercussions after having remained silent for the most part.
"Huh? Uh Kaiser! You shouldnโ" she refuted, attempting to ignore the cold intensity of his glare.
"If I sit at the front I'd be constantly straining my neck and, my eyes." The emphasis he put on his best asset was enough to pause her words of disapproval. Kaiser was a star member of bastard mรผnchen's football team, where the school's pride and popularity lay. Now, if she were to dismiss said boy's worries, then that may as well be equal to her refusing to follow the royal family's order. Very dramatic, yes. But it was simply the truth. She could end up being sued, and knowing the severity of aristocracy, ah. She didn't even want to think about such endless possibilities.
"...is thereโ" her voice lowered in octaves, gaze following in pursuit with a restricted sigh, "...a desired spot you'd prefer Kaiser..?"
The awaited question was like music to his ears, the first dose to curing his boredom. He couldn't stop the crooked smirk that adorned his face, enhancing the dark glow of his sapphire hues. "There." He pointed towards the table on the second to last row beside the window, the seat beside wherein she usually sat.
