"That's the first time I've heard you say that to me like, ever," you said, crossing your arms and fixing him with an displeased glare.
For the first time that day, Felix met your gaze, if only for a fleeting moment, and you could feel every emotion raging through him at that moment as if they were your own. Confusion. Hurt. Sadness. But maybe, just maybe, compassion? Care? Whatever it was, you felt something tender that you couldn't quite place in those earnest eyes.
"I know, and I'm sorry," Felix fixated back on his feet. "I just... I don't know if I can talk to you about what happened."
"What do you mean, 'what happened'?" You prodded.
Felix's brows creased, and he shot you a bewildered look. "Last night, of course. When I-" he stopped mid-sentence for what felt like the hundreth time that night.
"What happened, Lix?" You asked, voice barely above a whisper. The ocean waves nearly drowned out your words.
Felix raked a hand through his hair and blew out a loud breath, sending the strands around his face flying. "Do you... remember anything from last night?"
You paused. "The last thing I remember is Riley vomiting, and us going outside. And everyone was dancing while just I sat by myself. I started drinking, and then the next thing I knew, I was in my bed and Mya was waking me up."
A look of hurt flashed across Felix's handsome face, and your heart instantly ached for him, but you weren't sure why. You couldn't do anything to make him feel better, and even if you could, it wasn't your fault that you couldn't remember.
Of course, you had chosen to get drunk. But if you hadn't been so torn up over Felix, you wouldn't have done it in the first place.
"I understand," Felix finally said, swallowing hard. You watched his prominent Adam's apple move up and down, and you wished you could give him a hug, or even a pat on the shoulder. Something to make him feel better.
"I'm sorry," you found yourself saying, even though you didn't know what you were apologizing for. "If you could just tell me what happened, then-"
"No," Felix cut in, shaking his head. "I shouldn't have- I hoped that- never mind. It's not your fault." and he started back towards the house.
"Felix, please, wait!" You protested, reaching out to grab his wrist once more. You weren't sure what you would say if he let you. Beg him to be honest with you? Apologize again? Comfort him?
However, Felix didn't give you the chance to come up with a good idea. He lengthened his stride to avoid your grasp, your fingers barely brushing his hand as he passed.
And before you knew it, he had disappeared inside, leaving you to hurry after him by yourself.
What the hell is wrong with him? You thought to yourself as you trudged up to your room, keeping your head down and avoiding the curious gazes of the guys, who were all huddled around the tv watching a baseball game.
Ignoring Mya and Riley's prodding and prying as you entered the room and scooting past the other girls who had congregated on your bed, you grabbed your towel and walked the girl's bathroom across the hall. You locked the door before undressing and climbing into the shower. You just needed some time to yourself, time to unwind from the day and think about what the fuck just happened. What it meant for your and Felix's relationship. If you could call what you two had a relationship in the first place.
Of course you knew that important things happened last night, things that had to do with Felix. But now you knew that what happened affected him. He'd been thinking about it, maybe all day. And based on the way he acted out there on the beach just now, you assumed it was because of something you did. What did he say again? Something about how he got his hopes up, when he shouldn't have.
What did you do that might have gotten his hopes up? Did you flirt with him? Maybe try and kiss him? You did tend to get a little flirty when you got drunk. That is, when you weren't crying.
But why would that have gotten Felix's hopes up?
There could only be one answer to that. But it didn't make any sense. Felix had always seen you as a little sister. In fact, even on this trip, he had gone out of his way to make sure you knew that.
What, if anything, could have changed?
As the hot water hit your back and the steam invaded your senses, you let yourself mull this over and over in your head. But the longer you thought about it, the more you confused you felt.
Finally, when your fingers were thoroughly wrinkled from the water, you climbed out, wrapped yourself in a towel, and headed back to your room.
"Where the heck have you been, and spill the tea right now!"
Lanhua nearly knocked your towel off as she raced from the other side of the room to the door. Thankfully, you caught it, saving yourself from flashing all of your new friends.
"Jesus Lanhua!" You exclaimed. "I was just in the shower!"
Lanhua rolled her eyes. "No girl, I mean what did you and Felix talk about?? You were the last ones inside, and we need to know everything."
You sighed. "Can I get dressed first?"
"No! We have plans!" Lanhua insisted.
You looked at the other girls for help, but they all just shrugged. They were all sitting on the two beds as if they had been waiting for you.
"Okay... what's the plan?" You asked, raising an eyebrow at the girl.
"We're having a beach camp-out!" Lanhua exclaimed. "Just us girls. It's perfect! We need to get away from the guys so we can talk shit and spill secrets without the stench of B.O. and testosterone everywhere. Am I right??"
"We're not talking shit," JJ interjected. "It's just for fun. We'll roast marshmallows, eat snacks, and gossip a little, that's it."
"I personally love talking shit," Tessa said. "And we bought matching pajamas for everyone!"
Mya gasped from her spot on the bed. "Really?? Why am I just hearing about this now??"
"Yeah, we got everyone Sanrio pajamas! You get to pick your character!" Lanhua tossed a shopping bag that was sitting by the door onto Riley's bed. "But I call Cinnamaroll."
Turning back to you, Lanhua crossed her arms and frowned. "You're gonna join the sleepover whether you like it or not, and you're gonna tell us everything."
"I'd like to learn some things myself," you agreed, fixing Mya with an expectant stare. "For starters, what the hell happened last night. Because I still have no idea."
Mya held up both of her hands in a peace offering. "I know I know! I promise I'll tell you once the sleepover starts, okay? I wanna pick my pajamas and make s'mores!"
You sighed, but came over to check out the pajamas yourself. You were a huge Sanrio fan, and if Lanhua had picked them out, you knew they would be cute.
"Okay so we bought Hello Kitty, Cinnamaroll, Pompompurin, Keroppi, Kuromi, My Melody, Batz Maru, and Pochacco!" Tessa grabbed the bag and dumped the contents onto the bed.
"Who does everyone want?" JJ asked, picking up the My Melody outfit and inspecting it. The pajamas were a fuzzy matching set consisting of shorts and a little crop top. The My Melody one was pink and white with My Melody's face on the front of the shirt, with bunny ears sticking out the top and flopping onto the chest. "This is pretty cute, huh? I didn't really get a good look at them in the store, to be honest."
"I think I want Batz Maru, if that's okay," Riley picked up the black and white outfit with the angry little bird on the front. "If I'm gonna wear a crop top like that, it has to be black."
"Can I have the My Melody one?" Renee, who sat next to Tessa, pointed at the outfit that JJ still held in her hand. "I really love pink and it's so cute! But if someone else wants it, then-"
"No, you have to take it!" Lanhua interrupted. "Besides, I bet you look incredible in pink!"
JJ tossed the set at Renee, who caught it, her cheeks the same color as the outfit. "Thank you!" She squeaked, smiling at them all. "I know we just met, but you're all so nice!"
"I want Kuromi!" Robin practically leaped at the purple and black outfit with the cute little horns sticking out the top. "She's literally my favorite Sanrio character, I can't not have her!"
"I like Hello Kitty!" Mya said hopefully, glancing at everyone for permission before claiming the white and red pajamas. "Ooh they're so soft! I love fuzzy pajamas! I can't believe I've never seen this one before, where did you get it?"
"Which one do you want, Alaska?" Lanhua held up a Keroppi and Pompompurin set, wiggling them in front of you.
"Pompom has always been my favorite," you said, accepting the yellow and brown set from your friend. "It even has a little butt!"
"Oh my gosh I didn't even notice!" Tessa giggled, peering at the back of the shorts.
"I kinda love it," JJ laughed as she picked up the Pochacco set. "I love dogs and Pochacco is so cute, so I think I'll take that one," she added, grabbing the red, white and black set.
"I guess that leaves Keroppi for me!" Tessa said. "Green is one of my favorite colors anyway so I think it fits!"
You and all of the girls ran to change into your matching pajama sets, before heading downstairs to get ready for your outside sleepover. You'd never camped on a beach before. Would it be really dirty? You weren't sure. It couldn't be any worse than regular camping right? And since it was with all of your friends, old and new, it couldn't be anything but a blast.
Robin, JJ, Lanhua, and Renee went to get the tent, sleeping bags, and blankets from JJ's jeep outside, while you, Riley, Mya, and Tessa went to steal snacks from the kitchen.
"We bought a bunch of stuff at the store earlier, but we wanted to steal even more food for tonight!" Tessa said to the three of you. "I hope you guys stocked up for this trip."
"There's eight guys with us, we had to buy a month's worth of snacks for this two week trip," you laughed, opening the small pantry to show Tessa.
The entire cupboard was packed so full with food that some of the bags had exploded. Chips and cookies lay on the floor, bags upturned or on their sides.
"Damn, it looks like someone ransacked this place in the middle of the night," Tessa commented, leaning down and grabbing a handful of bags. "What's in the fridge? I've been craving fried chicken for the entire week and I'm starving."
"Oh don't worry, we have so much stuff," Riley assured her, grabbing a huge bucket of chicken, along with some cold pizza and noodles.
"When did we have time to get all that? We just got here yesterday!" Mya frowned at all the food.
"I dunno, those guys are a different breed," you looked at the containers Riley held. "They look delicious though. I'm sure they won't miss a few things." You snatched as many bags of candy and chips that you could hold.
"C'mon, let's go!" Tessa urged. "The other girls are setting up the tent, and I don't know if we can trust JJ or Lanhua to do that without killing someone."
"Poor Renee, she's probably in danger," Riley chuckled. "She's new to the group so we can't have her dying on the first night!"
"I'm sure Robin watch out for her, even if it means none of them can set up the damn tent," you agreed as you all headed outside with your loot.
By some miracle, the four girls had managed to get the tent made, and the eight sleeping bags set out. The tent was huge, almost like a small cabin made of fabric, because it fit all of you more than comfortably.
"Where did you guys get this thing??" Mya asked in wonder once everyone got settled in their sleeping bags, which were situated in a circle so everyone could see each other while you talked.
"My family goes camping a lot," Tessa replied. "I absolutely hate it honestly, but I snuck it out for the night. They won't miss it."
Riley wrinkled her nose. "You're so right, camping is kind of gross, especially out in the middle of nowhere. This is the only way I'd be able to do it."
"Do you think crabs will try and bite us while we're here?" Mya asked, peeking inside her bright pink sleeping bag, as if she expected to find one waiting for her.
"If they do, I'll get them for you," JJ replied, miming crushing an invisible creature with her hands.
"Who cares about the stupid crabs?" Lanhua piped up. "We have more important things to talk about. Everyone has important things to talk about."
The graceful girl sat up straighter in her sleeping bag and shot you a meaningful look.
You groaned inwardly.
You were in for a long night.
