abience - the strong urge to avoid someone or something

one week later...

spencer's pov

"stay behind me." i commanded. i was a shield between cameron and our unsub, jeremy rivers.

he'd been recreating our crimes, compiling a body count of over fifteen. he'd studied our team to the fullest extent, he knew every little bit of information. he knew about our work lives and our personal lives.

"jeremy rivers, fbi!" she announced, creeping out in front of me. i wanted to object, but instead i held back, aiming my gun at his head.

if he touched cam, i'd kill him.

she approached him as he held a woman, her arms pulled behind her back. her blouse was torn open from the front, revealing her chest. rivers was a sexual sadist, he got off on this.

cameron slipped her gun into her holster.

what is she doing?

this man was a classic psychopathic narcissist, he wasn't going to respond to negotiation techniques; she knew that.

"jeremy, i'm cameron." she introduced, her hands in the air. he held a large shovel in his hand, it was his only weapon.

"don't come any closer," he warned. "one more step and ill chop her head off." he held the large garden tool to her neck, it wasn't an empty threat.

"it's okay, we're here to help, but in order for us to do our job, we need you to let ava go." she pleaded.

this wasn't going to work, i knew it and she knew it.

"really? let's make a deal." he argued. cam nodded, still slowly moving up on him.

"you for her." he smirked.

no way. he'd kill her.

no fucking way.

"deal." she walked up on him as he dropped ava, who scattered into emily's arms. jj, hotch, morgan, and i stood back, our guns drawn and ready to fire.

he pulled cameron up by the collar of her shirt, holding her against the wall. the shovel dug into her skin, dropping dirt onto the floor beneath them. she was in nothing but a green tank top and high-waisted back jeans. jeremy eyed me.

he knew.

he knew everything about us, that meant everything.

"you love her, don't you? i know that look." he tormented. "that's the look i gave hannah, before she left me."

"jeremy, cameron isn't hannah. this won't help." i begged. he laughed in response, cameron wincing at the metal tool ripping into her skin.

"really? does this make you mad, dr. reid." we'd figured that this man would've done extensive research on our team, all to avoid being caught.

he tugged at the strap on cameron's shirt, pulling it off of her arm. she stayed held up by this man, her eyes full of terror.

"jeremy! don't move, i'll shoot!" hotch screamed, nearing closer. rivers kept his anger targeted towards me.

"or maybe this?" he pulled the bottom of cameron's shirt up to the underwire of her bra. once he'd pulled her shirt almost off, he turned to face her. "is this what it felt like cameron? living with that man?" she gulped and shut her eyes.

i heard emily breathing behind me, she was mortified.

"or maybe even t-" his voice was cut off by the ringing and whizzing of a bullet. it struck him
in the center of his forehead. he was going to hurt cam, jj shot.

emily and i rushed to cams aid, kneeling down next to her. her shirt was now damaged and i could see that she felt more than exposed. her arms wrapped around her chest, concealing her undergarments. emily stood in front of her, blocking her chest from everyone else's sight. i slide off my blazer, handing it to her. she took it without hesitation, sticking her arms into the holes and covering up her cleavage.

the rest of the team left the room, arresting our unsub. emily wrapped cam in her arms as i watched.

"are you okay?" she pulled back and cradled her cheeks.

"i'm fine guys, how's ava?" she stood up and began to walk away, stunning emily and i.

her neck had visible red marks on it from the shovel, they looked painful. not to mention she was trembling in fear but she attempted to cover it up.

"she's on her way to the ambulance, you should probably get checked out too." emily responded as we followed after her.

"emily, i'm all good. he's dead now, the worlds a better place." she scoffed.

this concerned me. cameron wasn't one to believe that, she preferred to lock the killers up, make them suffer in jail.

"come here." i demanded, stopping in my tracks. she halted and turned around, staying put where she was.

i shuffled up to her and wrapped my arms around her neck, holding her head close. she didn't hug me back, she was probably surprised.

"don't ever do that again. it was a blatant disregard for your safety. he could've killed you cam," i whispered. "he could've killed you." i repeated.

"spencer, i'm fine. i'm not dead, i'm not even hurt. let's go." she rushed me out of the building.

emily and i shared a concerned glance. we both knew that she didn't want to leave because she was fine, she wanted to leave because she was terrified. she was fighting back to urge to scrape at her arms, instead picking at the skin around her fingernails. she was still shaking slightly, her body still cloaked in my jacket.

i turned to emily as a paramedic examined cam.

"i'm still trying to understand why she did that, it makes no sense." i began, speaking under my breath. i didn't need anyone but emily hearing this. "she knew he wouldn't respond, she put herself in danger."

"i know, i don't know either spencer." emily bit her nails, a nervous habit she'd picked up as a child.

"it's almost as if she had no regards for her own life, she didn't care." thats when it hit me, and clearly emily too. she turned to me, eyes wide. "she doesn't have any regards for her life," i repeated. "she hasn't for weeks now."

emily's eyes were concerned and sad, she turned them back to cam who was sent off with a clean bill of health.

"you guys ready to get back to the hotel?" the sun had set, slight hues of purple and pink still lingered. "i could use some sleep." she rubbed her eyes.

"yeah," emily broke the silence between us. "for sure. we have to be up early to fly back tomorrow."
