โ‹†ยฐ แƒ“ เผ„ UNTIL THERE WAS YOU
chapter twelve. an honest woman.

After thinking it over Sam decided to go out to dinner with her grandfather to talk things through, or so to speak.

"You look great tonight, Samantha. Considering..." Daniel Miller says, complimenting his granddaughter, while taking a seat at the table.

"Thanks. The doctor says I don't have to wear the sling anymore, but the cast itself has to stay on a little bit longer"

"Well, I'm sorry this even happened in the first place"

"Anything new at work?" Sam asks, changing the subject. She's honestly so tired of everyone asking if she's okay, when she is, kinda.

"It's good. Just a lot of paperwork. I guess I've always missed field work. Speaking of, how's the Intelligence unit?"

"It's great. My co workers are nice" Sam says, taking a sip of her water.

"And Hank Voight is treating you well?" Daniel asks, which makes Sam sigh. "He always has grandpa. Especially when no one else was around to"

"Look, Samantha. I know, I haven't been the best, or have been around much since your mother died but we're still family and that means forever. Not some low level Sergeant, who's brainwashed you into believing that he's your family"

When Sam heard that, she could instantly feel her anger surfacing, her blood boiling.

"Hank Voight is my family. He would do anything to protect his own" Sam says, standing up from her seat, "And let me tell you something. Hank has been there for me, more times than I can count, and definitely more times than you've been there for me since mom died. Because family...doesn't end in blood"

Sam grabs her purse and storms out of the restaurant, leaving her grandfather speechless.

๐ŸŒ™๐ŸŒ™๐ŸŒ™

Sam walks up to the apartment door of her boyfriend, Jay Halstead.

When the door swings open to reveal his girlfriend. Jay looks at her confused, as the raven haired girl enters the apartment and places her bag on the table.

"I thought you were at dinner. What happened?"

"He was just being a total jackass, like usual" Sam says, flopping down onto the couch.

"You wanna talk about it?" Jay asks, sitting next to his angel -as he likes to say.

"Not really" Sam sighs, laying her head on Jays chest, as he wraps his arm around her shoulder, "Can we just have a beer and watch a movie so I can forget about tonight?"

"Anything you want, sweetheart"

"Let me just get out of this uncomfortable dress first" Sam says, as she gets up and heads into her boyfriends room and strips down to her bra and panties and puts on, one of Jays shirts, that ends resting right at her thighs.

Sam looks over at the dresser when she hears Jays phone vibrate -she knows she shouldn't but she does-. Sam goes over to his phone and sees that Erin had texted him and asks if they can talk. "Huh.."

It's not like Sam is a jealous person, she just thinks it's weird, that Erin wouldn't come to her if she needs to talk to someone.

While the brown eyed girl heads to sit back down on the couch, Jay hands her a beer and kisses her cheek. Sam smiles and snuggles in closer to Jay as he wraps his arm around her and they both take a sip of their beers.

๐ŸŒ™๐ŸŒ™๐ŸŒ™

Sam and Jay walk onto the unit, drinking their coffees, when Erin walks over to them and tells Sam to go with her to Hanks.

Once the two detectives drive up to Voight's house and park, they get out and walk over to it.

"Maybe, Hank is sick" Sam suggests.

"When was the last time you saw him sick?" Erin questions.

"Okay never but anything is possible"

Lindsay knocks on the door and unlocks it with her key.

"You still have your key?" Sam asks the brunette.

"Yeah, don't you?"

"I think I lost it. But don't tell Hank" Sam begs, which causes Erin to laugh, as they enter Voight's house.

"Hank?" Erin calls out, as the two walk through the hall to the back of the house, to then see a chair knocked over.

"Back door" Sam points out then they walk into the kitchen to see a smashed phone, that's when they get worried and draw their weapons.

Sam checks out the back, as Erin checks the basement.

"I got blood!" Erin calls out to Sam, who then makes her way behind Erin down the stairs of the basement.

The two girls clear the basement, then their frowns turn to shock when they see signs of a struggle and Hank's safe gone.

~~~
As the team scatters around Voight's house to look for clues, Erin and Sam walk into the kitchen with Jay and Kevin, while Al and Adam are in the basement.
"Smashed his phone, so we couldn't track him"  Antonio says.
"So, we figure two guys?" Jay asks.
"At least" Sam says, "Somebody was here. Coffee's Voights, but the tea...I have no idea"
"Voight's not the only one that got snatched"
๐ŸŒ™๐ŸŒ™๐ŸŒ™
The team is now back on the unit, surrounding the whiteboard, talking about their newest case. Missing person: Hank Voight.
"Voight had cameras at the front and back doors. Front door, seven this morning. This girl arrives" Dawson says, taping a picture onto the board, "seven-thirty, two unknown offenders enter the back" Antonio continues on, taping another picture onto the board right under the first, "Now we can't see if Voight or the girl let's him in. Five minutes later, this girl is seen leaving. Then one of the male subjects escorts her back inside"
"Ten minutes after that, they exit the back with the girl. They're carrying Voight out. He appears to be unconscious" Atwater adds.
"We gotta put out an all call message and get a wide search going" Jay says.
"No. Cause we don't know what Voight was into" Al says and Sam raises an eyebrow at the older man, "We're gonna bring him home safe, we do it ourselves. We keep this in house. Just like we did with Sam. Now the girl is Olive Morgan. A girl Justin dated when he was in town"
"Yeah, I remember her from back in the day. I wouldn't figure her for this" Erin says and Sam clears her throat. Her heart drops at the sound of his name.
"We gotta run it through every database we got. See if her phone is active. Get her family. Credit cards. She could be connected to these two, whoever they are" Antonio says.
"Connected?" Sam says, standing up from her desk to go stand next to Jay, "She could've set it up"
"What it's worth, Ruzek doesn't think they're local. So, he's trying something else" Kevin says. Sam walks over to her desk, followed by her secret boyfriend, who asks,"Hey, you alright?"
"Yeah, I just wanna find the scumbags that took Voight"
~~~

Sam looks up from her computer when Adam walks in and tapes a picture onto the whiteboard and says, "Alright, the little guy, Ian Marks. LKA, came back, in Denver"

"I ran his name through face of the nation database. His whole family is nothing but crooks. No match on the partner" Jay adds.

"The head of this unit is missing, four hours already. We need more!" Antonio says, slamming his hand on his desk, as Nadia walks over to Dawson and hands him a piece of paper, "Cell phone towers?"

"That was fast" Ruzek comments.

"I flirted with the girl at U.S Cellular"

"Over the phone?" Erin questions.

"Yeah"

"Idiot pinged a local tower" Dawson says, "Looks like Marks called his family in Denver"

"Can't be that stupid" Lindsay says.

"Choose Voight as a target, you can't be that smart" Sam adds in.

"Ruzek, triangulate those pings and get us a location. I'll get us an arrest warrant. Let's go "Al says as the team heads out to find Hank and Olive.

๐ŸŒ™๐ŸŒ™๐ŸŒ™

The team arrives at the abandoned house where Voight and Olive are being kept hostage.

Atwater, Dawson and Lindsay rush into the house and clearing it, while Halstead, Miller and Ruzek go around the back to find Marks and his partner.

The three walk down the alley with their guns drawn, trying to spot the suspects, but no luck, so they walk back to the house as Halstead puts his phone up to his ear, and says, "B-5021. This is Detective Halstead with Intelligence. Please be advised, we're looking for two white males, last seen on foot from Wentworth and 31st. Hold under authority of Intelligence...regarding? A confidential matter"

๐ŸŒ™๐ŸŒ™๐ŸŒ™

The team is now back at the 21st district, surrounding the whiteboard, which Sam stands in front of, opening a file.

"Ian Marks has five known aliases. Warrants out for home invasion in Indiana and Michigan" Sam says.

"Two days ago, he used an alias to rent a van down state. I put plates into NVLS, so hopefully, we get a hit" Adam adds in.

"I called in a search but..." Erin also adds.

"But what?" Dawson questions.

"All we can say about our investigation is confidential matter"

"That's what it is"

"Yeah, well, district south can't authorize a search based on that"

"Still no I.D on Ian Marks partner?" Dawson asks Atwater. "Nah. I talked to some CI's, some guys who run with robbery crews, but no dice. Still working on it"

"What the hell does that mean?" Antonio asks, "If you got nothing, just say you got nothing"

"I got a hit on the van" Jay annonces, walking onto the unit, "Dummies drove through a toll booth. Red light camera caught it going west, just south of 290. We gotta go right now"

"I'll dispatch state police" Ruzek says, going for the phone but is stopped by Dawson. "No. Voight said we do this ourselves. We'll do a grid search, they gotta be there someplace....where's Olinsky?"

"They went to go look for Olive's friend, Josie" Sam answers.

"Atwater, Ruzek, with me. Get me an ID on the big guy" Antonio says, before leaving the unit.

~~~
The team wait at their desks on the unit, waiting on news from Al and Hank, as they walk up onto the unit.
"You find the friend?" Erin questions.
"Well, we got both these jagoffs names now" Al answers.
"Great, lets run the big guys name" Jay suggests and Hank just walks into his office, ignoring everybody.
"Right" Jay says then gets up from his chair, grabbing his jacket, ready to leave with Sam following behind.
As the couple heads outside from the district, they walk over to Jays car, that they both got there in and their hands closely touching but not quite enough, where if they get caught, they won't be suspected of something.
"So, I was thinking..."Jay starts to say.
"Okay..."
"How would you feel about meeting my brother?" Jay asks. Sam stops, and asks, "Wait, are you serious?"
"Yeah, why not?"
"Well, it's just that...you said you've never introduced anyone to your family before. So, why me?"
Jay places his hands on his girlfriend's face and gently places his soft lips on hers, then says, "Because you're one of a kind, Samantha Miller"
Sam looks into her boyfriend's beautiful, hazel eyes, and says, "But, we've only been dating three weeks. What if you break up with me tomorrow?"
"First of all, I would never do that and second of all, just please, trust me, when I say that..." Jay sighs and brushes some hair behind Sam's ear, "You're perfectly imperfect"
"Okay" Sam whispers and smiles, and goes on her tiptoes to kiss him again. Sam loves the way Jay makes her feel, when he tells her things like that, it just makes her feel special and that she can finally love herself again.
What they didn't know, was while this was happening, someone was watching them from a distance.
๐ŸŒ™๐ŸŒ™๐ŸŒ™
The next day, the team is sat at their desks, trying to find this douche, Lukasz Gregorie.
"No priors on Lukasz Gregorie" Jay says, "You can't even prove this guys had a sandwich in Philly, let alone a double murder"
"We got nothing from the van. It was torched to the rims" Ruzek adds, "No prints. Nada"
"Look, this maniac is on someone's list. I mean, somewhere he jumped a turnstile. Ran a red light. Someone bailed him out. I want every phone, every camera we have on everyone he knows! I want leads! One hour" Hanks demands, before going into his office.
Sam sighs, before getting up from her desk and walking into the bathroom and splashes some water onto her face. Sam looks into the mirror and she hates the person thats looking back at her. It's like after killing Hernandez, it's made her a different person, but she's good at hiding it, considering who she's grown up around.
~~~

Sam and Jay are currently interrogating Ian Marks and finding out what he knows about Gregorie.

"I don't know where he's at now" Marks says, "Deal was, after the house, we split up and we both took half the cash"

"Your contact arranged for a way out?" Sam asks.

"Josie? No. Uh, Gregories people. We meet up at three at Northerly Island. Some guy I never mets gonna take us up to Ontario"

"You better not be playing us" Jay says, "Because if you are..."

Marks cuts the brunette off, "Yeah, yeah. You work for a psycho. Guess what? We all do"

๐ŸŒ™๐ŸŒ™๐ŸŒ™

The Intelligence unit is now at Northerly Island and scattered about, as they watch the deal go down and finally arrest Gregorie.

Sam and Jay are acting as tourists, standing in line for something, holding hands and surveying the scene. Hank, Erin and Al are inside the main building, watching Marks, as Antonio, Ruzek and Atwater are undercover as workers.

"I have to say, this is nice" Jay comments.

"Yeah?"

"Yeah, I mean, we're undercover but just being able to hold your hand right now makes me happy"

"God, you're such a sweet talker, Jay Halstead" Sam says, smiling.

"Only for my girl" Jay says, kissing the girl on her temple.

A few minutes later, Sam and Jay see Gregorie run outside with Hank and the team running after him with their guns drawn. As the male suspect grabs a woman and points his gun at her head.

"Stay back!" Gregorie demands, "I will waste this bitch!"

Miller and Halstead , slowly walk up behind the bearded man with their guns drawn.

"No one else has to die here" Hank says.

"That's up to you. Lose the guns!" Gregorie demands, "Lose the guns right now!"

Hank holsters his weapon as Al, Ruzek, Atwater, Dawson and Lindsay simply just lower theirs.

Halstead moves closer and puts his gun at the back of Gregories head, and says, "Move and I will shoot...nice and easy, drop the gun. Release the girl"

"It's over, let her go" Sam tells the suspect.

"Do it!" Jay shouts and Gregorie lets the woman go, who then runs away towards Lindsay.

Jay forces Gregorie on his knees and cuffs him, while Hank looks through the bags and drags him away.

๐ŸŒ™๐ŸŒ™๐ŸŒ™

"No way!" Sam asks, basically snorting at this point.

"I swear, he was so scared" Will Halstead says, taking a sip of his beer.

Like promised, Sam went to dinner with Jay and met his older brother Will, who she connected with easily, mostly with embarrassing stories about Jay. He's like a brother she always wanted.

"It's some strange guy, wearing an easter bunny head, give me a break" Jay says.

"You peed on him and you were 14"

Sam laughs even more and Jay gives her a look, which makes her stop but still smiles a bit. Jay looks at his watch, and says, "Well, we should get going"

"What. Already?" Will asks, "I was just getting to the good stories"

"Aw, Jay" Sam says, pouting, "He was just getting to the good stories"

"It's getting late" Jay says, standing up from his seat with Will and Sam following in his footsteps.

"Yeah, I guess"

Sam walks over to Will and gives him a hug, and says, "It was great meeting you Will"

"You too, Sam. And some other time I'll catch you up on all the embarrassing stories" Will says, which makes the brown eyed girl smile from ear to ear.

"Can't wait. I'll get the car" Sam says, taking the keys from Jay and leaving the restaurant.

"So...." Jay says, watching Sam leave.

"She's great, man."

"She is, isn't she?"
