โ‹†ยฐ แƒ“ เผ„ UNTIL THERE WAS YOU
chapter one. first day back.

Samantha Miller steps out of her green jeep wrangler, tossing her long brunette hair over her shoulder and takes a deep breath before walking up the front steps of the 21st district. Nervous, excited and everything under the sun about her first day back in Chicago and her first day back as a cop.

She was back in Chicago after nine years for a couple reasons. She needed to get out of New York and most of all she missed her best friend in the whole world, Kelly Severide. They had met when they were four and have been inseparable ever since. Like, they have never spent one day apart since they met inseparable, except for when she left for New York to get into the police academy.

Sam walks up to the front desk to see a sergeant with graying hair and she smiled. "Hi"

The older woman looks up at Sam, then looks back down at her paperwork and asks, "What can I do for you?"

"I'm here to see Hank Voight"

"Aren't we all?" The sergeant says, stapling papers together. Sam looks at the woman's name tag 'PLATT' then she takes out her new cpd shield that she got from the commissioners office to show her, "I'm detective Sam Miller"

Platt looks up at the younger girl with a raised eyebrow, "As in Commissioner Miller?"

    "Yes ma'am"

"Well then, by all means" Platt says, hitting the buzzer to let Sam go up to the intelligence unit. The most elite unit in all of Chicago.

"Thank you, Sergeant. And I know that was sarcasm but that's okay. I'll take it" Sam smiles at the desk sergeant then heads up to her new unit.

Sam takes a couple deep breaths before heading up the last couple steps of the unit when she hears. "Can I help you?" from an older man with a black beanie.

    "Hi, is Sergeant Voight here?"

"He's in his office," Olinsky says to the young detective, pointing to Voight's office.

Sam half smiles, "Thanks" then she walks between the desks to the sergeants office. Adam Ruzek walks over to Alvin and asks, "Who's that?"

    "Commissioner Miller's granddaughter"

"Seriously? What is she doing here?" Adam asks, raising an eyebrow but also shocked at how beautiful she was.

"No idea. Just go do your paperwork, kid"
Sam knocks on Hank's door and hears. "Come in" and with that the dark haired girl walks in and closes the door behind her.

"So, it's true. You made Sergeant"

Hank Voight looked up and smiled. "Samantha Miller"

    "Hank Voight"

Hank gets up from his desk and goes to hug the tan, petite girl and says. "Hey kid. How are you?"

"I'm alright. Just glad to get out of New York. How have you been?" Sam asks, stuffing her hands in the back pockets of her jeans.

"You know...the usual"

Hank Voight has always been a father figure to Sam. With her real father leaving when she was ten and when she and her grandfather would get into a fight, which was always, she would call Hank and let her anger out. He never once judged her for anything.

Hank Voight and Kelly Severide are the only two people that know everything about her. From her massive drug use when she was seventeen because she lost her mom to her attempted suicide attempt because of her overdose and not being able to live without her mom. Then when she was twenty six, she had gotten too close on a case she was working on, but that's a story for another time.

Sam has been afraid since a young age that one day she might break and never come back from it. She doesn't want to leave her closest friends and family behind because she wasn't strong enough to survive it.

"Like always"

"Ready for your first day back?"

"Of course"

"Let me introduce you to the team" Hank says, opening the door with Sam closely behind "Listen up. Let me introduce you guys to Sam Miller, a detective out of New York who has since transferred back here, to Chicago. Take it from me, she's good police. Make her feel welcome. She's here to stay" Hank puts a hand on the girl's shoulder and heads back into his office.

"Hey. I'm Jay" the tall brunette, who had to be at least 5 inches taller than Sam, smiles, holding out his hand for her to shake. Sam was instantly mesmerized by his eyes, how gorgeous they were and she shook the man's hand and felt something shoot up her arm, like an electric shock or something. They both had felt it.

"Hey. Sam" she smiled. Sam then directs her attention to a familiar figure walking up to the unit.

"Sammy?"

Sam smiled. "Hey Erin"

"Oh my god" Lindsay says, with complete shock and goes to hug the brunette, who she considers a sister. "I can't believe you're here right now"

"Me either" Sam had missed Erin like crazy. When Hank had taken Erin in when she was fifteen, they became fast friends, inseparable, like sisters. And then she left for New York.

Sam was brought back into reality when she felt a sudden pain in her shoulder. "Ow. What was that for?"

"That's what you get for leaving me for nine years"

Sam pouts at the detective, "I'm sorry. But you know you can't stay mad at me forever"

Erin sighed. "You're right" and with that, the two girls hug again.

After being introduced to everyone at the 21st district and being shown around, Sam heads over to firehouse 51 to finally see her best friend after nine very long years. Now, the inseparable duo have called and texted every single day since Sam had left, nothing could ever break their bond. Nothing. But not being able to see your best friend everyday is so much different than both thought.

When Sam had first gotten to New York, she was so excited to be starting over but when she had gotten to her new apartment that she was sharing with someone else from the academy, who needed a roommate. She had cried herself to sleep that night. She had already lost her mother and it felt like she was losing her other half too.

Sam walks onto the apparatus floor and sees a bunch of guys sitting around a table playing cards, so she plasters on a bright smile and heads over to them. "Hi. sorry to bother you guys. I'm looking for Kelly Severide?"

"Really?" Capp questions, only half believing she was here for Kelly. All the pretty women were.

"Yes. Is he here?"

"Uh yeah. Right this way" Capp says, getting up from his chair to lead her to wherever he thinks Kelly is. "So, how do you know Severide?"

"I've known him since we were four" Sam smiled, looking back on all the memories they shared. One in particular that was the most special, was when she was in the hospital after her overdose and since she had lost her mother and her grandfather basically abandoned her, she thought she was going to lose Kelly too. But he proved her wrong, once again.

FLASHBACK

Sam was sitting on her hospital bed, talking with Erin when Kelly walked in holding several balloons, a dozen of her favorite flowers and a stuffed teddy bear.

"I'll get going. I'll see you later, Sam" Erin says, then hugs her before leaving, saying a quick goodbye to Kelly on the way out.

"Kelly, you knucklehead. What are you doing?" Sam asked, fixing the blanket on her lap.

"I wanted to surprise you" Kelly half smiled and went to tie the balloons to a chair then placed the vase of flowers on the side table next to her and handed his best friend the teddy bear.

"Thank you, Kells"

"So. How are you feeling?" Kelly asks, taking a seat in the chair beside the girl.

Sam clears her throat. "I'm fine"

"Sammy. I know you better than you know yourself. Tell me how you really feel?"

Sam's eyes start to tear up and she wipes them quickly. "I'm sorry Kelly"

Kelly gets up from the uncomfortable hospital chair and goes to sit next to his best friend on the bed, wrapping an arm around her shoulder. "About what?"

Sam lays her head on his best friend's chest and continues to cry. "About disappointing you"

Kelly shuts her eyes tight, trying to keep his tears in, but it was too late. The salty substance was already leaving his eyes. "You could never disappoint me, Sammy. Why would you think that?"

"Because I look up to you and I don't want you to leave me"

"Leave you? Sammy, look at me" Sam hesitantly lifts her head to look into Kelly's crazy gorgeous blue eyes. "Sam, I would never ever leave you. How could you say something like that?"

Sam sniffled. "My mom left me. My grandfather hates me and I just thought that since this happened, you'd hate me too and leave"

"Samantha Grace Miller" Kelly says, sitting up and gently places his hands on the girl's face, cupping her cheeks, "I will never leave you, okay? You will never disappoint me, ever. You're my best friend and that's always and forever. I love you, Sammy and that's a promise"

Sam half smiles and wipes her face from the flood of salty water that was streaming down her cheeks and says. "I love you too, Kells"

Kelly brings the young girl into a hug and squeezes, "From here on out. It's just the two of us against the world. Okay?"

"Okay"

FLASKBACK OVER

As Sam follows Capp into the common room where all the firefighters and paramedics hang out in between calls, the detective hears Capp asking where Kelly was. "This is..." Capp cuts himself off then looks at the tanned girl.

"Sorry. Sam Miller. Nice to meet everyone"

"Kelly is sleeping, i think" Gabby Dawson answers, eating from her bowl of food, next to her new partner, Sylvie Brett.

"Wait, you're Sammy?" Matthew Casey questions. Sam directs her attention to the handsome blonde and says. "That's me"

Casey walks over to the brunette and hugs her. "I'm Matt. Kelly talks about you all the time"

"Really?"

"Literally all the time. I'll get him" and with that the blonde lieutenant walks away.

"So, how long have you and Severide known each other?" Herrmann asks, sitting next to Mouch on the couch.

"26 years"

"Wow"

"Tell me about it. I'm still shocked sometimes" Sam says, causing everyone to laugh.

"And she's funny. Welcome to the family" Mouch says, looking up from his newspaper.

"Guys, what's so damn important?" Kelly asks, yawning and walking into the room, following behind Matt. Everyone turned around at the sound of Severide's voice, to see how he reacts.

A huge smile makes its way onto Sam's face when she sees her best friend. It's been nine years since she's physically seen him and he looked even more handsome then when she left him all that time ago. "Hi Kells"

The voice Kelly Severide knows oh too well. He directs his attention to the petite, dark haired girl, who he calls his best friend, his other half. "Sammy?" was all he could say. He was shocked, he couldn't believe she was standing in front of him. Sam's eyes begin to tear up but continue to smile, causing butterflies to roam her stomach.

They both stood there, frozen in time. Everyone in the station house just watched them like it was a soap opera. "Are they just gonna stand there and stare at each other?" Herrmann whispers.

Kelly finally gets out of his trance and runs towards Sam and lifts her off the ground, with his strong arms wrapping around her waist, while Sam's legs lift up, hugging him back, her arms wrapping around his neck.

"I can't believe you're here. I missed you so much, you have no idea" Kelly whispers, taking in her strawberry shampoo, that she's never changed since middle school.

"Truck 81, squad 3, ambulance 61..." dispatch says and everyone races for their trucks.

"I gotta head out but meet me at Molly's bar after my shift tomorrow, okay?" Kelly says. Sam nods in agreement and Kelly lightly kisses the girl on the forehead and heads out.

๐ŸŒ™๐ŸŒ™๐ŸŒ™

Sam walks out of Chicago Med from seeing an old friend, April Sexton when she runs into someone. "Jay?"

"Sam, hey. What are you doing here?"

"Seeing an old friend. You?"

"Ms Goodwin called. Needed help with something"

"I'll let you be then" Sam half smiles, about ready to leave when Jay catches her attention.

"Hey, um, I was wondering if you wanted to get together later or something and get to know each other since we'll be starting as partners next shift"

Sam smirks, "That sounds great. I just bought an apartment and I need to break it in somehow, right? What about tonight, say 8 o'clock?"

Jay's heart flutters. He couldn't believe how beautiful she was. "Sounds good"

"Let me see your phone" Sam holds her hand out waiting for Jay to give her his phone, which he does. She goes to put her number in his phone and Jay just stares at her, admiring everything about her, the small, intimate details. Like the gold flakes in her brown eyes when the sun hits them just right, the way her small freckles sit on her cheeks and are only noticeable if you're close enough and her dimples, that only appear when she smiles and the way she bites her lip and scrunches up her nose when she concentrates on something.

Sam looks up and hands her new partner his phone back and smiles. "I'll text you my address"

"Cool"

"I'll see you later, Jay" she smiled, then walked away not knowing that what lies in the next eight years was going to be one crazy ass ride.
