"I think this is expected but y/n is certainly exceptional in everything," Shino looked at the papers in his hands with y/n and Sakura sitting across from him in the familiar conference room.

"Not shocking considering how alike she is with her father," Sakura let out a small sigh with a smile, scratching the back of her neck.

The famously young Uchiha was just sat on her side of the couch with a bored look, her eyes staring out the nearby window.

"y/n, do you know what kind of ninja you want to be yet?"

The girl seemed to snap out of her daze at the teacher's words, looking down at her own hands. "At this point, I just want those I care about to be safe."

β€”

"I'm telling you, my mom was such a drag!" Shikadai complained about his parents with a roll of his eyes as he leaned against the desk Boruto was sitting behind with Denki. Inojin, Iwabe, and y/n meanwhile, were standing with the Nara.

"Seems like you had a tough time!" Boruto smiled a little before looking over to Denki. "How was your conference?"

"Good. Dad was super happy when I said out loud that I'm going to become a Shinobi!" The electronic geek responded happily, looking back at the blond with enthusiasm.

"And I'm gonna cast off the title of 'repeater' once and for all! I swear I'm gonna become a Shinobi like Lord Hokage," Iwabe spoke up and y/n chuckled patting the man on his shoulder in support.

"Yeah, you can do it, Iwabe," Denki nodded with an assuring smile to the older boy, solidifying everyone's support in case y/n wasn't enough.

"Is becoming a Shinobi that big a deal?" Boruto finally asked a question that had been on his mind, his smile dropping.

"Of course. A famous Shinobi is kind of like a national hero! You'd be in high demand for commercials! See?" Denki held up his laptop with an ad for dog food. The big part of it though, was that Kiba had become the main focal point of the image.

"There are also a lot of guys like Kagemasa who star in movies and TV after they retire," Inojin added on, providing more evidence.

"You feel the same way too, don't you, Boruto?" Denki reverted the conversation back to the boy who started it, and y/n peaked up a brow, waiting to see the blond's reaction.

"Huh? Me? No... I'm not interested in that. I mean, is becoming a shinobi something to get so motivated about?" Boruto shot back with another question, resulting in Denki's eyes going white as tears welled up.

"That's-?! You inspired me to enroll in the Ninjutsu Department! I wish you'd reciprocate the same level of excitement as me, Boruto!" Denki reached over and held onto the boy's shoulders as he spoke.

"I don't know how to respond to that," Boruto offered a weak smile before y/n came in and pushed the two boys apart from each other. "What about y/n? She doesn't seem happy either!'

And just like that, the boys were focusing on the girl as she stood back up straight with a blank face that wasn't often seen on her nowadays. "Hm? What about me?"

Shikadai tilted his head a little, getting closer to y/n, which in turn made her back up some with surprise. "He's onto something. You have huge eye-bags right now from lack of sleep. Did something happen?"

"Now that I think about it, you haven't been the same since we got back from camping," Inojin spoke up once more, remembering how the girl had been slowly getting worse.

"I'm just tired that's all," y/n spoke the truth about not getting enough sleep, leaving out exactly why she was struggling to fall asleep.

"How can you be tired? Do you not get enough sleep? Why wouldn't you?" Iwabe stepped up, looking at the girl with suspicion and concern for his friend.

y/n shrugged off the puppy dog looks she was receiving from everyone before letting out a sigh. "It's nice talking about me and everything but the graduation exams are closing in on us," She pointed over at the poster on the classroom wall, making the group look that way instead of at her.

Denki took off his glasses, cleaning them with a small handkerchief from his pocket. "There are two parts, right? The written exam and the practical application exam."

"Oh yeah, it's a written exam, huh? But what's the practical application exam about?" Boruto sat up a little more as he spoke.

"It tests your practical skills. Back when I failed, it was on wall climbing. If I didn't fail the written exam, I would have cleared it no problem," Iwabe informed the group about the test from his own experience.

"I heard back in the day that you passed if you could do the Clone or Transformation Jutsu," Shikadai stated, relaying something he'd probably heard from an adult at one point or another.

"The Transformation Jutsu? If that's all, it would be easy," Boruto mumbled, leaning back in the seat as he crossed his arms in thought.

"By the way, who are the proctors?" Denki asked, hoping one of the kids would know.

"It's gotta be Shino Sensei and Anko Sensei," Shikadai stated, offering his idea up since those were the two that taught the group.

"Whoever they are, it's probably gonna be easy," Boruto smirked in a cocky way, leaning back with his arms behind him.

"I wouldn't be so sure," y/n stated, resting a hand on her hip with annoyance. "Depending on the proctor, only half, or worse case, no one becomes a Genin. There have been years like that in the past."

"What? Sometimes the whole class fails?!" Denki cried out, his eyes widening as y/n nodded, crossing her arms.

"I guess this means we won't know until we take the test," Shikadai mumbled, scratching the back of his neck.

β€”

Boruto walked out of the Academy entrance with y/n, both kids having their hands in their pockets as they strolled. "Graduation exams... Genin... huh?"

y/n was about to respond when a camera was shoved into her's and Boruto's faces. "Hey, you're students here, aren't you?"

"Hey! Who are you, old ma-?!" y/n slapped the blond on the back of the head before looking around the bulky camera at the brown-haired male with purple markings on his cheeks and a mole on his chin.

"What do you want? Trying to be a creep or something?"

"Creep? That's harsh. I'm Sukea, a freelance reporter," The man smiled, taking his camera down so everyone could see him.

"Oh, you mean like a journalist?" Boruto immediately cooled his earlier temper as he relaxed his posture.

"Yeah... I'm here to do a story on Academy Students preparing to take the graduation exams. I want to hear how passionate they are, what their dreams for the future are," Sukea looked around with his camera a little before putting it back on the two kids.

"Huh? A story? Sounds interesting. We'll be glad to help? Right y/n?!" Before she could respond Boruto took the Uchiha's wrist and dragged the girl back into the walkway leading out of the school.

"Don't drag me around!"

"Over here!" Boruto turned to the reporter, motioning for him to follow with a bright smile as he ignored y/n's remarks. "We'll gather up some guys who are still on campus."

"I wanted to interview you two first... But, that's okay..." As Sukea spoke Boruto was already running off with his complaining childhood friend.

"Stop taking me places! I never said I'd help!"

β€”

The camera was focused on Metal as the young boy practiced his punches at the school's training grounds. "Why do you want to become a Shinobi?"

"Naturally, to become a strong man like my dad! I want to see how far I can go," Just as Metal explained himself, he finally turned to see the camera pointing at him and his small practice kicks stopped, his body going rigid. "Hey, are you recording this?! Uh... I'm Metal Lee, nice to meet you! M-My dreams are-!"

The boy seemed to glitch out as he flailed around helplessly with fear. Sukea put the camera down with a small smile of sympathy, Boruto and y/n standing beside him.Β

"y/n help me!" The young boy jumped for the girl, landing in her arms bridal style. "He got it on camera!"

"Why am I here."

β€”

Inojin ignored the camera as he continued to draw on his notepad with a pencil. "I'll get to draw stuff I like, and I'll make more money than being an ordinary artist," The blond looked up at the lens. "I guess I'll be able to put my hobby into practical use."

β€”

"Well, it's a drag, but I'm trying to live up to my parent's expectations. And also, I really wouldn't mind being a ninja," Shikadai smiled a little as he rubbed the back of his head.

β€”

"My goal is to become the Hokage. So first, I have to become a worthy Shinobi, one who is acknowledged by everyone. Is that enough for you, sis? Can I get back to studying now?" Sarada glared over at her twin and y/n shrugged throwing the book back at her younger sister.

β€”

"Hm? Is it my turn? I can't go last?" The camera shook side to side as y/n stuffed her hands into her pockets. "I wanna... be strong enough to protect the people I care about..." Her face seemed to sadden for a moment before brightening back up for the camera's screen. "Is that good?"

β€”

"I... want to become a ninja!" That's all Sumire said before y/n gave her a small smile of encouragement with a thumbs up, making the purple-haired girl flushed and turn away.

β€”

Cho-Cho was sitting casually on the school's roof eating chips, her mind not thinking of much. "Huh? Are you recording? Isn't the camera too far to the right? Yes, come closer!" Sukea listened to the Akamichi, making her smile. "Yeah, that's the angle!"

The camera slowly started to pan down and over slightly, making Cho-Cho grab it. "Hey, what are you recording?!"

"Cho-Cho no!" y/n quickly ran over before the girl could punch the reporter.

β€”

Sukea waved bye to Cho-Cho as she walked off the roof, before turning back to the two friends. "Well now... After listening to everyone, this year's class is full of strong personalities. Hm? What's the matter?" He seemed to catch Boruto being silent as y/n leaned against the wall with a blank face.

"Oh, nothing. I was just thinking how everyone's got some pretty solid ideas about their future," Boruto laughed a little as y/n stepped away from the wall and rested her arm on the boy's shoulder.

"And there were even some students who decided not to become ninja too," Sukea took the words straight out of the Uchiha's mouth as he looked over his footage from the day.

"Yeah," Boruto nodded a little with a tight smile. "I just assumed everyone was gonna become a ninja."

"By the way, why did you enter into the academy?" Sukea put the camera onto the blond, y/n still resting on his shoulder.

"I... I just wanted to get back at my stupid old man," Boruto admitted why he'd joined the academy, his eyes not meeting with the camera.

"And was this the only place you could do that?"

y/n raised a brow at the reporter, waiting for her friend's response. "If I followed the same path as my dad, and I did better than him... I thought everyone would have seen that I'm better than him. Anyway, we've gotta get going, ya know! We'll help if you want to do more interviews tomorrow!"

"We?! Hell no, find a new damn friend-!" y/n was being dragged by the boy once again as she started up her complaints.

"See you, Mr.Sukea!" Boruto turned to wave by with a smile as y/n offered a half-assed wave to the man.

β€”

y/n laid down onto her bed with a sigh. "Here we go," The young girl slid under the covers and faced the wall, closing her eyes calmly.

Death.

You killed so many.

It's your fault they're all dead.

Murder.

When does it end?

y/n shot back up after only a few seconds, her hands running through her hair. "Okay then, I guess we can just stay up for another night. It won't hurt anything."

β€”

y/n heard the door slide open and watched Boruto walk in with a small yawn. She just put her head back down, closing her eyes calmly from next to Sarada.

"Why, Namida?! Weren't we going to become Shinobi together?!" Wasabi stood in front of the young girl's desk, leaning over it with angry eyes.

"Wasabi... I'm sorry, but..."

"What's up with them?" Boruto walked farther into the class with his hands in his pockets.

"Namida's planning to continue on in the general middle school curriculum," Sarada informed the boy of what was going on as she continued to read her book.

"You mean, she's giving up on becoming a ninja?" Boruto's eyes widened a little when he heard the youngest Uchiha's statement.

"Yeah, together with her parents, she's going to tell Shino Sensei during their conference today."

"Can everyone quiet down? My headache feels like Boruto's dancing around in my frontal lobe," y/n grumbled the words out as she buried her head farther into her arms.

β€”

"Hm, I see," Sukea smiled a little as he spoke. Boruto, Sukea, and a tired and irritated y/n were all gathered up in the hall of the school after the bell rung.

"But if she was gonna quit anyway, why did she even attend the Academy? I don't get it," Boruto clenched his fists, looking at the two sitting on the Academies staircase.

"It's not out of the ordinary," y/n stated, her head resting against the wall of the hall from her spot on the stairs. "Having completed the ninjutsu course is advantageous when you're looking for a job."

"Huh? Really?" Boruto's eyes widened at his friend's words.

"You attend the Academy, but you don't know? Graduating from the program certifies that you're talented. And in this age of peace, demand for shinobi is declining in every village. Utilizing skills gained at the Academy in other fields is more secure. And it's certainly less risky, right?" Sukea smiled as he spoke to the boy, explaining what y/n meant in finer detail.

"That's true. I've seen former ninja working in other jobs here and there."

"But I think there are reasons why some refuse to give up on becoming a shinobi, no matter how small the chances," Sukea spoke up again since y/n had gone silent, her eyes opening and closing slowly.

"Reasons for refusing to give up, huh?" Boruto rested his head on his hand as he leaned onto the railing of the stairs.

"Oh, so here you guys are," Mitsuki walked up, to the group, speaking when he caught sight of Boruto and y/n.

"Mitsuki! Perfect timing! Can you answer some of Mr. Sukea's questions?" Boruto asked the boy the same thing he'd asked everyone else, a smile on his face as Sukea and y/n stood up. The reporter started filming, getting Mitsuki's face in the frame.

"Sorry, but my conference is starting soon. Maybe next time," The pale boy smiled into the camera as he walked past towards the conference room to wait for his appointment time.

"That's right, I've never seen his parents before..." Boruto mumbled, his arms crossed as he watched the snake kid walk. "I wonder what they're like."

"You don't want to know," y/n mumbled, resting her head on the Uzumaki's shoulder. "That creep."

Boruto smiled a little at y/n's head, not hearing her mumbles as he rested his hand on her hair, ruffling the locks of black. His eyes suddenly widened as he turned around to the reporter, y/n's head falling off.

"Hey, Mr. Sukea... How would you like to interrupt a conference?"

y/n's eyes widened a little as she grew a mischievous grin. "Yeah... Mr. Sukea. What do you think of that?"

"No, we'd better not do that," Sukea smiled, his camera dropping from his face once more.

"Huh? Why?" As Boruto spoke y/n smirked, looking at the man with a knowing expression.

"Call it a journalist's hunch," Sukea turned to the kids with a playful wink.

"Oh, I nearly forgot mom needs me to do something. I'll see you later Boruto," y/n waved bye as she walked in the same direction Mitsuki had.

"Fine then, I'll just go find someone else to hang out with for now."

β€”

"Sorry I'm late," y/n whispered the words out as she peeked into the Hokage's office, her expression clearly flooded with exhaustion.

"Ah, y/n. Thank you, just stand back there please," Naruto offered a sad smile, seeing the girl's pitiful state. Shikamaru looked the Uchiha over with a quirked brow, worry filling his vision.

In front of y/n and Yamato was Orochimaru, a smile on his face as he stood before Naruto. "Imagine, someone like me, who by all rights would never be invited here, standing in this very room. You're very trusting."

"Frankly, I don't completely trust you. That's why I convinced Naruto to get her here," Shikamaru motioned over to y/n, who was glaring into Orochimaru's backside, waiting for him to do something she didn't like.

"Many things happened in the past... But today, our relationship is one of cooperation. And I apologize again for having y/n here, but please understand where we come from," Naruto smiled a little, clearly not harboring any anger towards the man at the moment.

"This is all true, and I understand. You did accept my dear child for enrollment into the Academy after all," Orochimaru spoke up once more, not moving his body.

"Still, only a few including ourselves know about that," Shikamaru stated, shoving one of his hands into a pocket.

"Your analysis of the research data that Danzo left behind has been a huge help. It will help quicken Sasuke's investigation. Along with... y/n's retrieval of old testing fluid left behind in the Mist all that time ago," The young child tried to ignore Naruto's words, her spit catching in her throat.

"I sowed the seeds, and I'm left to clean it all up, that's all. There's no need to thank me. Although I'm quite honored if my work is helpful to Sasuke. Oh, it seems it's almost time," Orochimaru turned, heading towards the door of the office.

"You intend to go?" Shikamaru spoke up, making the pale man turn to look back at him.

"But of course."

Shikamaru glared slightly and Naruto stood up resting his hand on the man's shoulder. "Then we won't get in your way."

The Nara rested a hand on his face with a sigh. "Hey, you should know this already, but if you plan on going out into town, make sure you disguise your face."

"Of course. A lot of people will be quite shocked if they see me," Orochimaru left the room, and y/n finally let herself slump.

"y/n," Naruto looked over at the girl to see her offer a small tired smile. "Thank you. I'm sure you're aware that you can't say anything about what happened here today?"

"Of course. I was just around to make sure he wouldn't try anything since the few ANBU members we have are out on a mission. I'll just forget this ever happened."

β€”

"So my sister, the nerd addicted to studying, helped convince Namida to become a ninja?" y/n asked the question as she walked with Boruto after meeting back up with him. "Good for her. I'm proud."

"Yup. She might get better than you at this rate," Boruto laughed, resting his hands behind his neck as the two kids spotted Sukea up ahead.

"Oh, it's you two. Thanks for all your help," Sukea smiled, putting his hands into his pockets.

"Sure," y/n continued to look at the reporter with amusement, watching his mannerisms.

"Sure! It was no problem! We got to listen to everyone's stories and that was great," Boruto smiled, looking up at the sunset.

"Everyone's stories?" Sukea questioned, confusion in his eyes.

"Yeah...
