You were so into your own thoughts that you hadn't even noticed Shadis, literally standing 5 feet away from you, yelling at a brunette girl who had a love for potatoes.
You turned to look at her, and when you did, she caught your eyes.
She clicked her tongue and went back to her potato while your superior was staring her down, expecting a sentence, even just a word from her after he had deliberately scolded her.
"Please," she sighed dramatically as you watched her break the steamed potato in 'half' (more like 85-15%), then giving it to Shadis, who was as stunned as any of the cadets that had had the opportunity to experience such a thing.
"Have half." she smiled.
You later found out that that girl's name was Sasha, who had an uncontrollable love for food, and even though she shared her meal with her superior, she still rejected orders and showed disrespect.
Which, naturally, ended with her being punished harshly.
After training, of course.
Dinner time finally arrived for the cadets, and you were more than thankful (and sweaty) to take a well-deserved break. You took a quick stop by your room to change clothes with Mikasa, then you two headed for the mess hall.
You could literally hear your own stomach growling in your ears, and not only did you hear itβ΄Mikasa heard it too, causing her to chuckle lowly.
On the way to the mess hall to get your dinner, flashbacks and memories came back to you like a wave. Your dad, your mom, your grandpa which you had met once, Carla and Grisha Jaeger, those bullies that bullied Armin.
The death of Carla and the death of your dad replayed in your mind, as well as their last words to you.
"I love you, Y/N"
"You're the only one I trust to take care of them."
You were so, so grateful that your dad had gotten mercy, and had died 8 days prior to the fall of Wall Maria.
Mikasa, upon noticing your gloomy expression, bumped her shoulder with yours gently, bringing you out of your thoughts.
You looked at her and smiled slightly. Not even Mikasa knew about how your dad died, and you intended to keep it that way.
"I'm sorry," you whispered, shaking your head with a smile and a sigh. It took no fool to know that Mikasa was worried about you, and you yourself could see it in her eyes.
You scratched your arm in the awkwardness of Mikasa's stare, which lingered on you way longer than what you like. This was an irritating habit of hers that she had developed after the incident, and it did piss you off a little.
"Y/N," Mikasa stretched out, causing you to sigh yet again and pinch your eyes shut. Should you tell her your worries or let it go?
You decided to let it go.
"Yeah?" you croaked out, finally mustering up the courage to look her in the eyes. Mikasa's expression changed to stoic to slightly worried, with her eyebrows knit together and a frown on her lips.
You yourself frowned and squeezed her shoulder, causing her to return to her stoic expression.
"Mikasa, there are no guarantees in this life that we have been given. There's no guarantee that we'll live and no guarantee that we'll grow old."
Mikasa took her lip between her teeth, looking at you. You smiled slightly. "But I can promise you that I'm always gonna protect you, Eren and Armin. You're the only family I have left, and I'm not gonna lose you."
You felt yourself being lifted up by your own words. It was true that there was no way that you would lose Mikasa or the boys to the titans.
If necessary, you would bet your life on the line for them.
Happiness and relief bubbled inside Mikasa as you spoke those words. She herself had been kinda down, but your words of truth managed to calm her down. Even though you were only 8 months older than her, you never failed to make her see you as a big sister.
"Let's go get dinner," you suggested with a grin, and Mikasa followed you without hesitation.
Upon opening the large doors to the mess hall, the smell of bread and soup filled your nostrils, and you closed your eyes to savor this very moment. The way the warmth of every human inside filled the hall with a gross yet tender atmosphere engulfed you in a hug.
Mikasa looked at you with a small smile, while Eren and Armin watched you from a distance with amusing smiles on their faces.
"Go sit," you mumbled to Mikasa, eyes still closed. "I'll get you your tray."
"Okay."
You opened your eyes and watched as Mikasa went to sit over with the boys, who greeted her with both an unamused and a gleeful smile. You decided to linger for a little longer in the atmosphere of human interaction before you walked over to the cafeteria lady.
The lady greeted you with an almost annoyed expression, and that instantly left you with a sour attitude towards her. You hadn't even spoken yet, and she had the audacity to shoot you a disrespectful stare?
Nuh-uh.
"Two trays, please," you said politely, smiling at the lady. The lady glared at you for a second or two, then looked around with a smirk.
Fuck.
You watched as she stood up and leaned her face close to yours. Her breath smelled so bad, you actually had to hold your breath with an unamused face as she began shouting at you, in front of all the cadets.
"You only get one, you glutton! How many cadets do you think we need to feed?!" she yelled madly, gesturing out towards the room packed with cadets, which all fell silent and looked at you and you only as the lady shoved a tray into your hands. "It's filled with new people!" she continued. "And you want more?!"
Now you were definitely not having a good time.
The cadets began whispering amongst themselves, and you definitely heard a few snickers and a few grunts of disapproval about your 'hunger'.
That...
pissed you off.
Your eyes scanned the mess hall. Everyone was looking at you, either with sour and disapproving faces or with amused smiles.
You sighed and looked at the lady again, who was for sure enjoying the amount of attention she was creating,
"Oh boy," you heard Eren's voice say, as he leaned into his hand with an amused smirk.
"I think the real glutton here is you," you confessed as you looked around, watching as her expression changed from smirking to confused. "I mean, you literally just created a whole fake scene that got taken out of context to satisfy your need for attention. I think that makes you an attention-glutton, no?"
You smirked in victory as the whole mess hall boomed into laughter, snickers, chokes, and tears. The cafeteria lady became beet-red in the face as she quietly shoved another tray in your direction without another word to defend herself.
Victorious sassiness wins again.
With a smirk, you took the second tray and walked over to your table through various amounts of snorting cadets who clapped your shoulder, sitting down and sliding a tray over to Mikasa, who covered her small smile with her hand.
Eren slapped the table in pure glee as Armin tried calming him down with a smile on his face.
To say dinner was a disappointment would be an understatement. The bread was dry, and the soup had managed to somehow taste like sticking your tongue out into the air.
You were munching on your half-left bread and watching Eren and someone named 'Jean' bickering when suddenly you had remembered something.
Sasha.
She's still running out there. Gosh, you felt so bad for her.
Without a second thought, you shoved the half-eaten bread inside of your sweater as you stood up, stopping Eren mid-bickering as he looked at you curiously.
"I'm going to bed," you smiled. Mikasa and Armin bid you goodnight mid-convo, and you nodded and went outside the mess hall after stroking Armin's hair once.
The cold evening air chased your skin under your sweater and loose dress-shirt. It bid you a 'good evening', which you welcomed with a smile. The forest seemed to bid you hello as the orange leaves danced around your body, bidding you goodnight.
You sighed happily and walked the trail to the training fields, where Sasha would surely be running and starving.
As you walked, you couldn't help but think of all the good times you had when you were 10. When you first had gotten citizenship to be above ground, all because your grandpa died in a hospital and wished for you to be allowed up.
You owed it to him.
Grandpa, huh? you thought. I hope he's well, along with mom and dad.
What you wouldn't give to be 10 again. To be... innocent again.
A sudden snap of what you could only describe as a big twig brought you of your thoughts as well as your walk. The constant ruffling of leaves and liquid being spilled sparked fear in your heart.
You looked towards the trees a little away from you, where the sounds had come from. Who was there? Enemy or friend?
Your questions were answered a man came walking out of the woods with a black, loose hoodie and grey sweatpants hugging his legs. If you hadn't heard the weird sounds, you might have assumed that he was a normal person.
But you couldn't take your chances.
So as the man got closer and closer, you took the liberty of picking up a huge stick from the ground, holding it in front of you as if it was a sword, deadly and mighty.
The man stopped in his tracks as he held his hands up. You could barely make out his dark hair in the total pitch-black darkness.
"Who are you?" you said, although your stance was strong, your body quivered and your voice shook from octave to octave. Was this the end for you? Was he an experienced murderer?
"Relax," you heard him say. Though his aura was thick and dark just like his figure, his voice was calm, soothing and even. It made you drop your guard for a few seconds.
You cautiously stepped back a little, allowing the man to come out into the moonlight, so you could have a chance to clearly see his features and eyes.
Your mind told you to forget it and run because of your fear, but your heart told you to wait and see because of your curiousness.
The strange man finally got the hint and stepped out from the trees, showing you his features.
And boy, did you not expect that.
You lowered your stick as you took in his appearance with a startled look. This man that stood in front of you was your height, with ebony hair and dark eyes.
"Can you drop the stick now?" he sighed, leaning his face on his shoulder as he closed his eyes.
Your eyebrows shot up in surprise. You had a fucking stick, and he still insisted on closing his eyes and letting down his guard in front of you? Why he would do such a thing baffled you.
So you decided to ditch the twig and dry your hands on your dress.
Which definitely earned a disgusting look from the man.
You didn't know what to do. On one hand, this man clearly trusted you enough to close his eyes, but on the other hand, you didn't trust him that much.
"Who are you?" you asked, crossing your arms and scanning the man's facial expressions. He let out a deep sigh as he gazed at you, almost as if he was hurt by the fact that you had just asked him that.
He shrugged and walked around you, sitting down on a rock a few feet away from you.
"Call me Levi," he said, staring at you through half-lidded eyes. You shivered from the cold and sat down beside him, although a few inches away from him.
He looked, unamused, away from you and leaned his cheek onto his hand.
You stared at him confused.
A few seconds went by where nothing happened. Your thoughts were racing about why, how, who and where this man came from. It startled you when he looked back at you with an expression that says 'are-you-fucking-kidding-me?'.
You looked at him with raised eyebrows, as if asking him what the fuck he meant.
"Can you tell me your name?" he asked with a deadpanned expression. You internally facepalmed and drew your feet closer to yourself, resting your chin on your knees as you looked into the blue air, pondering whether or not you should tell him.
You decided to say screw it. "My name's Y/N L/N. I just started as a cadet here today."
You looked over at Levi to see his expression, only to see his eyes wide while staring at you, lips slightly parted. "Y/N?" he questioned.
You nodded and leaned a little away from Levi, a little disturbed and confused about his reaction towards you. He didn't fail to notice this as he leaned back and sighed, running a hand through his hair.
"Sorry about that, I guess I'm just a little surprised," he confessed. Levi felt the disappointment, shock and a feeling he hadn't experienced in a long time bubble in his stomach, almost making him feel sick right then and there.
He couldn't believe any of what was happening was real.
As to you, you were more alarmed when you snuggled closer to your sweater, only to find the half-eaten bread crunching against your ribs, reminding you of why you were going on a walk in the first place.
Shit, you thought, once you felt the crumbs spilling all over your stomach.
You looked quickly at Levi again, this time his expression stoic and peaceful, and bowed to him quickly before standing up. "I'm sorry, I just remembered I have something to do," you stuttered out.
Levi only looked ahead of him and nodded, standing up himself. He looked at you one final time before he turned around, walking away, raising his hand up to wave at you while you stormed off towards the training grounds.
Little did you know, Levi had a tiny smile on his face as he walked away from you.
"Sasha!" you shouted, just in time to see a sweaty brunette fall over into the dirty ground. You ran with all of your might up to her, practically sliding towards her and heaving her panting self into your lap.
You took out the half bread from your pocket and held it in front of her mouth, encouraging her to take just a little bit. Yet Sasha refused and just turned her head away.
"W-water," she panted, her breathing short and ragged, tainting the air white with every breath she took.
You buried your face into your hands. How could you forget the freaking water? No one wants to eat with a dry ass mouth!
"Excuse me?" you heard. Your heart leaped out of your chest in surprise as you turned around, only to be met with a tiny girl with blonde hair. She held a water bottle in her hands. "Is she alright?"
The girl approached you, and together, you two managed to nurse Sasha back to an okay state after she had water and nutrition.
Now, she was fast asleep, snoring and drooling into your lap. Not gonna lie, it was kinda gross, but you didn't mind it so much, as you completely understood the state that she must be in.
Now the only problem was how you were gonna carry Sasha to bed without getting noticed by the superiors, seeing as it was already way past your bedtime. You didn't want to find out what the punishment for voluntary disregard for orders was.
"I can't," you squeaked out, a second before collapsing down onto the ground with Sasha on your back. Luckily, you took most of the fall.
Krista helped you get Sasha onto a comfortable position yet again. 10 minutes have passed, and none of you were able to lift her successfully without falling down shortly after.
You were so close to saying fuck it, let's sleep here, until someone clicked their tongue behind you, making your head jolt up in surprise as you turned around.
You were quite surprised to find a woman, brunette and freckled, to stand there, observing you and Krista just as much as you were observing her.
She shrugged and walked over to you three, casually heaving the snoring Sasha onto her back as if she weighed nothing, making both you and Krista give each other a look of uncertainty.
"What?" the woman asked, upon noticing the distressed looks on yourselves. "Let me do it."
Krista pondered for a moment until she stared into the woman's eyes. "Why would you help her?"
The woman snickered and smirked, tightening her grasp on Sasha, alarming you a little. "Because then she would owe me. And her stupidity could become useful someday," she said, as she walked with Krista and Sasha to bed as you watched.
That woman's words left a bad taste in your mouth the whole night, and you instantly concluded that you did not like this woman one bit.
Later that night, when you had changed and brushed your teeth and gotten into bed, you couldn't sleep. What a weird night it's been for you. It's played over and over and over again in your head like a movie. First, you meet this strange man called Levi, and then you meet another woman who you didn't really put your trust in.
You wanted to clear your mind of your anxious thoughts. So as you hopped out of bed and walked to the window and opened it, your normal gush of wanting excitement filling your being.
You delicately climbed out of the window, holding onto the roof tiles as you heave yourself up.
That night, you ended up falling asleep on the roof with your blanket, under the midnight star-filled sky.
And for a moment, you almost forgot what the current world was like.
That was my first day at the training camp. Keith Shadis, the 12th Commander of The Survey Corps, had become my higher superior and mentor for the next 3 years.
In all of those years, only 1 thing kept me going:
I wanted to see what the world had to offer me, for I knew that the sky spread wider than the walls.
But first, I had to get through my 3 years of training.
WONDERING WHERE THAT LEVI X YOU GOING
