"please attach this on your chest and don't lose it." a man handed you a badge with a number on it, 406. you took it and did what he have told you, attach it on your chest.
you looked up ahead and saw hundreds of people, mostly guys. there were women, but they could be counted on your fingers. that made sense; after all, you were number 406 and might be the last participant in this hunter exam.
it looked like it hadn't started yet, so you walked to the side and sat on the ground, leaning against the wall. you closed your eyes to meditate for a while.
the god of eternity is out here, taking an exam to be a hunter. you chuckled silently, though there was no humor in it.
it was bizarre. one second, you were trying to figure out the anomaly you sensed from the leylines, and the next, you found yourself on an unknown island.
you remained calm and wandered off, walking aimlessly. that's when you overheard a few guys talking about this hunter exam. it piqued your interest, so you inquired about it.
after getting the details, you decided to participate, though not because you particularly cared about becoming a hunter. you were curious-curious about this world, this exam, and the strange feeling you couldn't shake since arriving.
now, leaning against the wall with your eyes closed, you could feel the subtle hum of energy in the air. these people, while mostly ordinary, carried an undercurrent of resolve and ambition that reminded you of the mortals you used to guide. well, most of them do.
as the minutes stretched on, the ground beneath you began to vibrate faintly, snapping you out of your meditation. there was a loud sound-you couldn't tell if it was a growl or a scream, but nonetheless, it hurt your ears. a wall opened, revealing a man in a tuxedo with a mustache. he was pale and holding the source of the noise, which might have been an alarm or a bell.
"as of now, registration is closed. the hunter exam will now begin. everyone ready?" he looked around briefly. "good."
"this way, please." he turned around and started walking. you stood up and followed him, just like everyone else. there were four hundred people, and you were at the back-not that you cared. you couldn't hear what the examiner was saying, not that you cared about that either.
his pace began to quicken, and soon, everyone was running to keep up. fortunately, your clothes made it easy to move. your attire included a form-fitting bodysuit layered with flowing, black, kimono-inspired fabrics adorned with intricate patterns and floral accents. a wide sash tied around your waist formed a bow, adding a touch of grace to your appearance. your outfit was complemented by high stockings and a ribbon on your neck. these were the clothes you used to wear when makoto was still alive and the archon.
five hours had passed, and you were all still running. the examiner kept increasing his pace, seemingly unbothered by the grueling test. many participants had already surrendered, collapsing from exhaustion or admitting defeat. those who remained were a mix of determination and desperation-some panting and drenched in sweat, others managing to stay composed, though their resolve was beginning to crack.
you sighed, deciding you had seen enough from the back. it was time to catch up. with a quickened pace, you surged forward, your movements so swift that only those with exceptional perception could even register your presence.
"eh?! what's that?!"
"is that a person? no way... must be the wind!"
"these people are freaks!"
their reactions didn't surprise you, but you paid them no mind. in moments, you had closed the distance to the front, stopping just a few steps behind the examiner. he glanced over his shoulder briefly, his expression unreadable, but you could sense he had noticed your approach.
the others running near the front exchanged nervous looks, some clearly unsettled by how effortlessly you had caught up. it didn't matter to you. all that mattered now was staying close to the examiner. if this was his idea of a test, you would see it through-and you were certain this was only the beginning.
"wow, that's amazing, nee-chan!" your eyes widen a bit when you heard a voice just behind you. you glanced back just to see two boys.
"how did you do that? to run that fast?" the boy with ash white hair asked. he has blue eyes and he looks like a feline cat, at least in your eyes.
"yeah!" the other boy with black hair nodded while smiling widely. you slowed your pace so they could keep up.
"who are you two?" you asked, eyes directed on the back of the examiner.
"i'm gon and he's killua!" gon, the black-haired boy, said and pointed to killua, the one with ash white hair. you nodded curtly, not answering again.
"hey, you didn't tell us your name," killua pointed out, and gon agreed with him. you hummed, thinking about what to say. but since no one knows you in this world, you decided to just tell them your real name.
"raiden ei. you can call me y/n though." there was no harm in telling them your names. you quickened your pace when you reached a staircase going upward. gon and killua were following not too far behind.
"hey, killua, do you think y/n-san is already married?" you raised a brow when you heard gon say that. was he aware his voice was too loud?
"eh? what's with that question? but i don't think so," killua answered, watching your back. maybe he understood gon a little, since you were an adult and really beautiful.
"me too. i have this sudden urge to call her mom!" your eyes widened when gon said that, and you blushed but tried to hide it. killua noticed the movement of your shoulder and grinned.
"yeah! let's call her mom! she's our mother now." the two ran faster to catch up to you and announce their silly idea.
"mom, wait for us!" they both yelled, with playful excitement in their voices.
you froze for a moment, your face turning a deeper shade of red. "w-what?" you stammered, trying to process their words.
"y/n-san, you're officially our mom now!" gon said, grinning widely.
"i don't think that works like that," you replied quickly, shaking your head as you tried to regain your composure. killua snickered beside you.
"nah, you're our mom now, no taking it back!" he teased, nudging you lightly.
you sighed but couldn't help the small smile that tugged at your lips. maybe this wasn't so bad after all.
"fine then. you two are my children now."
