"What are you even doing with your life?" Closing your eyes when you heard his voice behind you, you don't even have to turn around and have a look of his face because you know what is his reaction right now. He is surely disappointed of what happened. "You had wasted your years of training." You gripped the straps of your shoulder bag tightly as he continue to talk to you.
You just arrived home from the headquarters of JAKDF, and your father was the first one to welcome you oh so warmly back into the house after not seeing you for four years, and all those four years, he didn't greet you, his eldest daughter, a happy birthday. Deciding to have a look of his face, you turned around and gave him one of your fake smile.
"I didn't know that you're already home, Papa." Cringing at the endearment you chose to call him. He wasn't even a father figure to you, especially after what happened six years ago with the Kaiju no. 6 and your beloved mother. "If I should've known that you're homeβ" I wouldn't have gone home, you didn't bother to finish your sentence when you saw how your father's face scrunched up with your words.
His eyes looked behind you and saw the polearm sticking out of your back, it was taller than you and by the looks of it, he must have been familiarized with your polearm as you could see how his eyes widenβeven when it was just for a fractionβand familiarity flash in his eyes. You already know what that look had meant. Before your mother had her own personalized weapon, the Spear, she was using the same polearmβthe same one you're using nowβwhenever she is practicing or when it was her first week in the Defense Force.
"You'll be nothing with that polearm." You heard him mutter, his baritone voice had authority in them as his eyes looked down on you. Your blonde hairβ that you keep dyeing into other colors but faded back to your original hair color almost immediatelyβdrape over your shoulders and cover your face as your knuckles turned white at how hard you're gripping the straps.
"I heard from Narumi that you rejected his offer of you becoming his Vice Captain in the First Division Unit." You could hear the disappointment in his voice as he said that to you, hearing him 'tsk' as he continues to look down on you. "Are you planning to form your own unit?" There was somehow hope that flash in his eyes, he was really disappointed when he found out that you rejected Narumi but somehow thought that probably, you'll be planning of creating your own unit.
"No.." your voice becoming lower as you couldn't look up at him. "Captain Ashiro of the Third Division Unit had asked me first to join her and I already accepted it." Isao's eyes squinted at your figure, he already heard that Ashiro already had a vice captain. "Doesn't she already have her vice?" He continues to question you, you already want to plop on your own bed and take a rest.
"Yes." Biting your lower lip as you waited for his response. "Your younger sister had been accepted into california neutralization university at the age of 16." You already knew about that, Kikoru shared you the news excitedly, sending you various of messages and telling you how excited she was, that was rough a year and half ago.
You're very closed with your younger sister, even though how much your father favor her and telling her that she's the hope of this new generation.
"And she's also said to be the valedictorian of her year." You couldn't even hear the tone of him being proud of her, because at what he said, "Getting excited because of one goal would lead to failure on your next goals." You just lets out a sigh as you raised your head at him, smiling at him before turning your back against him.
"That's nice to here." You don't have the energy to act all prim and proper in front of your father right now. "I'll be going in my room." Waving your hand at him as you take a step on the stairs, not looking back but you can feel his eyes at you, and you could practically hear his thoughts.
'The only failure of the Shinomiya Clan.'
. . .
"You did great in your mission, Shinomiya-san." You grumbled when you heard Okonogi address you with your last name. Tapping your earpiece as you swing your polearm to the side, getting the blood off of your blade. "Don't call me by my last name, Okonogi." The girl hum in nervousness when she heard you talk to her, you just let out a sight at that.
Looking around you, there were buildings that had collapsed because of your fight with the Honju. Scratching your head as you could see fallen debris on the ground, and some of the insides of the monster got scattered around the place. The cleaning company would surely have a hard time cleaning your mess.
But at least there were no fatalities.
"Oh, what a mess." Someone spoke beside you, and when you turned to look, you see his purple haired in a bowl cut hairstyle. He has his respirator mask hanging around his neck, his eyes were closed as a hand was placed under his chin, looking at the bloodied mess. "Defeating a Honju that have a fortitude level of 6.5." He hum in amusement, remembering how Okonogi was panicking as she helped you in defeating the Honju, you were alone and the other members were scattered around Harajuku.
Hoshina opened his eyes, his purple orbs staring at your green ones. "You should accept Ashiro's offer." He was pertaining to the Platoon Leader position that the Captain Ashiro had been asking you ever since you had joined her unit.
"I don't think I can be able to lead a group." The same answer, the same stanceβwith a hand scratching the back of your head as a bashful smile was formed on your lipsβHoshina remembered that day. Your response was the same as what you said that faithful day, and again, he could only sigh at your stubbornness.
Hoshina glance at you, seeing that you're no long dyeing your hair into various colors and you had let your hair flow behind your back. The bright golden strands that seems to shimmer brighter when the ray of the sun had reflected on it, matching together with the beautiful color of the golden hour. He knew that you don't want to resemble any of your father's features, be it his eyes or his hair, you don't want to be called hy his last name either.
"You know, the selection exam is next week." He had reminded you, walking in the same pace as you as he watches you put your polearm behind your back in ease. Gathering all of your hair and tying it in a low ponytail, as some strands had framed your face. "I can't wait to see how it goes." He hummed, he'll be observing the fitness and aptitude exam, guiding each and every one of the examiners.
"Wonder if we would get some interesting recruits this year." You stared at him, you were too tired to match his energy right now.
Hoshina remembered meeting you through Ashiro, a few months after she asked him her vice captain, that is rough six and a half years ago when he was 18 and you were 17 and turning 18. He was shocked to hear that she didn't ask you to be in his position that time, and the first thing he had thought when he saw you that faithful day was,
"She's pretty." The common compliments that you've heard many times before. He was also reminded you of your late mother, from how you had your blonde hair styled back then but now, you just let it fall behind your back and keep dyeing itβbut soon stopped since it was bad for your hair. Hoshina also knew you were the chief's eldest daughter and he later found out from Ashiro that you had some grudges against your father.
He tilted his head to the side, there was something inside of him that he couldn't understand nor put his finger to it. As he keeps staring at you, he felt his heart skip a beat making him halt his step and stared at his chest, thinking what it was. 'Did my heart just skipped a beat?' He thought to himself, an unfamiliar feeling blooming inside of him.
Hoshina then decided to brush off that feeling and continued following you, starting a conversation between the two of you. He was blabbering about the new recruits of last year, saying that it wasn't the same when you were still in the examination, setting a standard and had a new record of the unleashed combat power for someone who isn't an officer. It was also the same day that he had met you, seeing how skilled you were on the battlefield.
"Let's grab something to eat, [Name]."
"Sure, as long as you pay."
"You're richer than me!"
