You allowed yourself to wander through your mind, (e/c) eyes glazed over as you stared at the small corner of the ceiling. You knew you were supposed to be doing something important but you didn't really care now. Idly, you let your mind walk around aimlessly, not settling on one thing for too long. You were thinking about the last week of school, the last week when you had seen Bam Bam, your eternally annoying best friend before he went back to Thailand for holiday.
Flashback
'So,' you said slowly, looking at the figure that was slightly taller than you as you pouted. 'You're going back to Thailand. And leaving me here. Alone. With no company.' you said, crossing your arms in a huff.
He laughed at your huffiness and patted your head like he always did. A gesture familiar to you as the back of your hand.
'Hey, it's only for like the first 2 weeks of summer and I'll be back, to annoy you again,' he chuckled.
'I guess,' you muttered to your shoelaces, not willing to let him see how much you wanted him to stay and how much you would miss him while he was gone.
'Besides,' your best friend continued, his voice tightening slightly. 'You have Jaebeom to keep you company don't you?'
You flushed a bright scarlet as he mentioned your new boyfriend. It was still weird to think of Jaebeom that way no matter what the whole school thought. The most popular girl and the most popular guy, there were whispers that both of you were eventually bound to be together. And that was exactly what happened, 3 weeks ago when he proposed dramatically in front of the entire school, and from then on both of you were the talk of the school, and more often than not, the occasional glares as jealous girls whispered behind your back.
'Yeah, hmm Jaebeom,' you said more to yourself than Bam Bam. Sure you loved JB, he was sweet, kind, caring basically everything that a girl could ask for but there was always that tiny, tiny part of you that thought whether you really wanted to be with him. Most of the time you just ignored the annoying whispering voice in the back of your head, locked in a small chest and threw away the key, all the while focusing on the GOOD things that he was and why you loved him.
As you let your thoughts float in the air, as wispy as the cotton-like clouds that decorated the sky, you heard your name called out.
'Hey love,' the same voice said as he wrapped an arm around your shoulders, kissing you gently on the temple.
Even without looking you knew it was Jaebeom. Plastering a smile on your face quickly, you beamed up at him.
'Hey,'
'I thought of walking you back to school but since Bam is already accompanying you I'll just-,' he said before getting cut off by your best friend.
'It's okay hyung,' dismissing his protests with a wave of his hand. 'I was going to make a little detour anyway,' he said, hitching his school bag higher as it slowly slid on one shoulder.
You felt the slightest bit guilty as you watched your best friend, wheel around going in the opposite direction. You bit your bottom lip, hesitating a second before calling back out to him.
'Bam!' you called out as he turned around to look at you. 'You're coming tonight right? For your going away thing?' You and the rest of his members had organized a sort of 'farewell party' for Bam although he was technically only going away for 2 weeks.
He shot you a small sad smile which evaporated almost as soon as it appeared before merely nodding in reply as he walked back down the street while Jaebeom dragged you in the opposite direction, chatting enthusiastically about his day and it took you a few seconds to realize that you were supposed to be paying attention to him.
At The Party
Lying comfortably on Jaebeom's shoulder as you laughed along to another ridiculous joke that Jackson told, you looked around feeling strangely proud that you had managed to pull of something for your best friend before he left. It wasn't exactly a huge party what with just the 8 of you in Mark's house, because his parents were the most chill about 8 teenagers causing havoc in their house, some pizza, soda, you know your typical good old lame teenage party.
The clock chimed 12 and you yawned slightly, snuggling slightly deeper into Jaebeom's side, your eyes growing tired despite being high on fizzy soda. Chuckling, he wrapped an arm around you, as looked up gratefully.
This cued a chorus of 'OOOOHHS' from the boys as you blushed furiously and wished desperately that you could disappear.
'Look at our leader being such a softie,' Jackson teased as he elbowed Yugyeom, side-eying the both of you with a smirk on their faces.
You could practically hear Jaebeom rolling his eyes as you buried your face deeper into his worn shirt, to prevent your humiliation from showing on your face.
Kissing your dark hair, he whispered in your ear, 'I'll deal with them later,' he said, rubbing your arm comfortingly as you had the courage to peek out from Jaebeom's shirt to look at the rest of the members, the blush not having entirely left your cheeks.
Jackson and Yugyeom still wore triumphant smirks on their faces while Mark, Jinyoung and Youngjae looked genuinely happy for their leader. The only person that was avoiding your eyes was your best friend as he toyed absent-mindedly with the crust of his pizza. He looked up at you and just for a moment you saw a glint of anger, a touch of sadness, regret and disappointment all wrapped in hopelessness.
It pulled at your heart to see your best friend like that and you had the sudden unexplainable feeling that you wanted to rip yourself out of Jaebeom's arms and run to hug and comfort Bam. But before you could do anything drastic, you blinked and the look in Bam's eyes was gone as if erased clean, instead his eyes returning to its usual gleam of mischief.
'So,' Jackson said addressing Bam, looking him right in the eye. 'What does the best friend have to say about all of this eh?' he asked, waving his hand at you and Jaebum.
He looked at you both, and seemed to hesitate for a split second before his thick lips broke out into his usual smile. 'Guess, I know whose best man I'm going to be in the next few years,' he joked, dropping a wink at you. He sounded completely normal, just someone teasing his best friend, but you, who knew him for so long could detect the undercurrents of something in his voice. It sounded like resentment and even frustration but you weren't sure who it was directed at.
After The Party
Staggering slightly as the blood rushed to your stiff muscles from sitting down too long, you reached out to Jaebeom's shoulder to steady yourself as he half-supported you.
'Do you want me to walk you home?' he asked as you slipped your feet into your long worn sneakers.
Glancing out at the inky black sky with only the moon for illumination you glanced at your best friend who fiddling with his watch, as if waiting for something as he gazed wistfully at the moon.
Shaking your head, you pressed a warm kiss on his cheek before saying. 'I would love it but can I be with Bam?' you asked softly, trying not to hurt his feelings.
His face softened despite your rejection and his dark, nearly jet-black eyes remained thoughtful for a while before he nodded. 'Sure,' he said his voice not even the slightest bit angry. 'Go,' he said nudging you to him with a smile.
Pleased, you bounded up to your best friend who was still staring at some point in the horizon, eyes glazed over.
'Hey,' you grinned as he snapped out of his reverie.
'I thought Jaebeom hyung was walking you back home?' he asked, not even trying to keep the bitterness out of his voice as both of you made your way back home.
Noticing the sourness in his voice, you stopped walking and half glared at him doubtful that he could see you in the hazy moonlight.
'Okay,' you said crossing your arms, refusing to move another step. 'What is with you and your bad mood? You keep looking at me like I've murdered your entire family, which I'm pretty sure I didn't,' you joked, trying to lift Bam's somber mood.
He glared at you, lips still sealed, staring at your stubborn, obtuse face. He sighed, running a tired hand through his messy hair.
'I probably shouldn't say this,' he chuckled weakly. 'But since I'm leaving I might as well get if off my chest.' He took a deep breath, exhaling slowly as if preparing himself for something incredibly painful.
'I'm in love with you,' he gushed and you nearly flinched away from him as he continued. 'I've been in love with you since we were kids and I've never had the balls to tell you because I thought that because I guess or more I hoped that you would maybe wake up and realize that.' he laughed weakly at himself. 'And now you're with Jaebeom and I can't even get angry with you because he's my leader and you're my best friend and I was too late,' he said hurriedly and his face changed, he looked like he wanted to punch through a wall.
'I don't want you to say anything,' he said sternly, as you opened your mouth. 'I guess now, I'm going to have to live with just being your best man eh?' he joked weakly, but his voice cracked in the middle of the sentence and you knew even before you saw him that tears were running down his face. 'As long as you're happy with him, that's all that matters,' he sighed. 'I'll live with it for the rest of my life if I have to,' he said, before shaking his head and leaving you to the cold night air as you felt a bit of your heart shatter.
Back To The Present
A voice pierced your thoughts, as sharp as the shattered pieces of your heart. You hadn't known, that being waist-deep in your memories that you had started crying, soft tears falling from your face and landing on your grey sweater, watching, zombie-like as it seeped into the threads.
'(Y/N),' the voice repeated sharply, pulling you from your thoughts and you felt a pair of strong arms, pull you into a hug but you were wondering, despite being warmed and loved, why did you feel like there was shard of ice stabbing your heart, releasing its icy-coldness in throes and made your knees feel like buckling to the ground?
'Hey, hey,' the voice said urgently, as a gentle hand brushed the tears away from your cheeks.
'What's wrong? Are you hurt?' Jaebeom asked you anxiously as he pulled you into his lap, stroking your long hair.
Shaking your head, you sealed your lips, unable to look at your boyfriend in the face because you were scared that if you did, he would be able to read you like an open book.
'It's Bam isn't it?' he sighed almost as if expected it.
Out of pure shock more than anything, your head snapped up to meet his and you mentally chided yourself as you did so.
Taking the look of utter surprise on your face as a sign of affirmation, he sighed, loosening the hold on your arms. Wiggling, you turned around to face him, and you couldn't help the guilt that was very obviously showing on your face.
'You love him don't you?' Jaebeom asked, his voice turning sad but very very soft as he looked at you.
Sighing, you didn't see much use of hiding it any longer, you looked at him straight in the eye and hesitated for a second too long but he knew.
Surprising yourself more than you, he didn't release you immediately or look at you in disgust, instead he allowed the silence to prolong until it became an almost tangible thing.
Finally, unable to take it anymore, you asked him: 'How?'
He chuckled weakly in response, staring out the window for a few second his head in hands. 'It's the way you look at him, like... like... he's the center of the universe, like the Sun raises and sets on his platinum blonde head,' he joked weakly. 'I know this because, I look at you the same way,' he whispered softly and your face flushing red you felt like the most horrible person in the world.
'J-Jaebeom,' you stuttered, unsure what to say that would make things better because some things once broken couldn't be fixed.
'You don't have to say anything, I don't blame you,' he reassured although it was still hard for you to look him in the eyes. 'It's just, I'm glad I got you, even it was for a while, but I'm not going to hold you back,'
Hot tears stung the back of your eyes as you tried valiantly not to cry. Hesitant, you took his hand as he looked up, eyes red-rimmed. 'I love you Jaebeom, but I can't keep leading you on when I unknowingly gave my heart to someone else, I can't put you through that. You're an amazing guy and any girl would die to be with you, and I don't know what to say other than I'm sorry,'
Giving you one last gentle kiss on your forehead, he gave you that smile you loved. 'A small stake on your heart is better than none, now go, call him,' he said letting you go and pressing your phone into your hands.
With shaky fingers, you pressed your best friend's number and waited with crossed fingers, hoping that he would pick up.
'Hello?' a voice grumbled from the other side.
'Hey Bam,' you said softly.
'There better be a good reason for this, I'm still getting over my jet lag,' he complained over the phone, his voice stiff.
'Just, can you come over, to school?' you asked, praying that he would accept.
'School?' he asked suspiciously. 'Isn't it still closed? What the hell (Y/N)?' he asked, his voice slowly becoming more and more frustrated.
You bit your bottom lip hard, wondering what to say when you felt the phone taken from your grasp. Jaebeom had your phone firmly in his hand and he walked some distance from you before talking to Bam quietly over the phone.
Finally, with a smirk on his face, he dropped the phone back into your waiting palm. 'Settled, he'll be at school in, let's say, half an hour?' he estimated.
Dumbfounded, you looked at your phone which had been turned off, the call obviously ended. 'W-What in the world did you do?'
'Hmmm, let's just say I'm very good at persuading people to do something even when they are reluctant,' he grinned, flashing you a mysterious smile.
Your heart ached a bit and pulled for this man who was willing to sacrifice his own happiness for you.
'Thanks Jaebeom. For everything,' you said before hurriedly packing your things and leaving, and you couldn't resist just taking one last glance back at him, wondering musingly to yourself, what you had just done.
At School
You waited at the closed and padlocked, iron-wrought gates of your school, as the breeze chilled you to the bone and you cursed at yourself for not bringing a jacket from Jaebeom's house or something. But then again, it probably wouldn't be good for your best friend seeing you wearing your ex's jacket.
Soft footsteps approached and you knew even before you turned around that it was Bam, his white head of hair messy, its color a stark contrast against the blue sky, like another Sun itself.
Hands deep in his pockets, he looked at you coldly. 'So, I'm here what do you want?'
Before you could reply, he continued: he seemed to be letting off a lot of steam and continued like a verbal freight train.
'Real smooth by the way, calling me and then handing of your phone to your boyfriend who managed to persuade me to actually come here, although God knows why I should be.' he ranted, his dark eyes blazing with fire.
He could have continued until the Apocalypse came raining down upon you, but your nerves already frayed and stretched to the limit because of what happened with Jaebum you screamed.
'BAM BAM, CAN YOU FOR ONCE IN YOUR LIFE SHUT YOUR MOUTH AND ACTUALLY LISTEN?' you screeched and was quite satisfied when he did so instantly.
Taking a deep breath, you looked up at him, wondering how you were going to break the news to him.
'I broke up with JB,' you said and watched him carefully and was unsurprised when you saw a slight glimmer of hope flicker in his eyes.
'And? I'm supposed to come and help you dry your tears and lend you my shoulder to cry on? Well then you must be WAY over your head than I thought,' he sneered.
'OH MY GOD,' you felt the odd urge to slap him. 'JB broke up with me because even HE could tell that I was in love with YOU,' you snapped out and watched with some form of satisfaction as he was stunned into silence.
And finally, something got through his cold facade, it was like watching ice melting and crackling into millions of tiny little shards.
'You? Love me?' he asked saying the words as if they didn't make sense.
'Yes you infuriating insufferable IDIOT, and it took JB who I was DATING to find out,'
The fire in Bam's eyes had if it was even possible became fiercer, an inferno rather than flame now. Roughly he took you by the waist and you had a short glimpse of the fire blazing in them before he crashed his lips on yours.
It was like the fire in his eyes had been centered at his lips and it was like a burn that consumed your entire being. His lips tasted like salt and he smelled like freshly-pressed cotton, the first rays of sunlight in the morning and so much like Bam and like home that it was almost ridiculous that you had never felt this way for him before.
'God Bam,' you gasped for air, as he let you go, although you could tell he was reluctant.
'God is right,' he chuckled and you saw that his usual cheerful expression was back on his face and his cheeks were slightly flushed.
'Number 1,' you listed out still trying to catch your breath. 'Where the hell did you learn to kiss like that and Number 2 does that mean we're together?'
'Let's see,' he said tapping his bottom lip. 'Number 1, I just went with it and Number 2, YES,' he said wrapping an arm protectively around you. He thought for a while before a grin broke on his face. 'Hey, does that mean I have JB hyung to thank for our relationship?' he asked more to himself than you.
You rolled your eyes at him. 'Just shut up and walk me home Bam,' you laughed, hooking your arm in his.
'Gladly, my lady.' he said pressing a quick warm kiss on your forehead as he took you home.
