Chapter 96

Yoshika remained in the Palais Mermonia longer than she intended.

The war was on the horizon, yet for the first time in what felt like an eternity, Fontaine was quiet. No pressing orders, no battle cries, no desperate last-minute strategies. Just the soft hum of the city outside and the flickering candlelight illuminating the grand halls.

She glanced toward Furina, who sat near the window, absently twirling a strand of her white hair between her fingers. The former God of Justice looked deep in thought, her usual dramatic flair replaced with something... calmer.

Yoshika leaned back against the wall, crossing her arms. "You're uncharacteristically quiet."

Furina blinked, snapping out of whatever thought had been occupying her mind. She tilted her chin up, regaining her usual haughty demeanor. "Hah! Am I not allowed to have a moment of elegance and refinement without being questioned?"

Yoshika smirked. "You? Elegant? Now that's a stretch."

Furina gasped, placing a hand over her chest. "How dare you! I am the very embodiment of sophistication!"

Yoshika chuckled. "Sure, sure."

A comfortable silence settled between them again. Furina's playful expression faded, replaced with something softer. Her blue eyes shimmered in the candlelight, and for a moment, she simply watched Yoshika, as if trying to memorize every detail.

"You're really not leaving?" Furina asked again, quieter this time.

Yoshika shook her head. "I already told you. I'm staying."

Furina exhaled, leaning against the window frame. "Good."

That single word carried more weight than Yoshika expected.

For all her dramatics and bravado, Furina had been alone for so long-always playing a role, always hiding behind her performances. But now, in the stillness of this moment, there was no need for an act.

Yoshika walked closer, stopping just a step away. "You're worried."

Furina scoffed. "Obviously."

"For Fontaine?"

Furina nodded, then hesitated.

"...For you too," she admitted, voice barely above a whisper.

Yoshika felt something shift in her chest.

Furina quickly turned away, flustered. "A-Anyway! You should get some rest! You're no use to Fontaine if you collapse before the war even begins!"

Yoshika chuckled, but she didn't argue. "Alright, alright. But only if you promise to sleep too."

Furina huffed. "Hmph. Fine."

As Yoshika turned to leave, Furina spoke again.

"...Thank you."

Yoshika glanced back. "For what?"

Furina hesitated, then smiled-small, genuine. "For staying."

Yoshika's lips curled into a smirk. "I told you, didn't I? I always keep my promises."

And with that, she left, leaving Furina staring after her, heart pounding in a way she wasn't quite ready to acknowledge yet.
