Chapter 89

Furina sat alone on the balcony of the Palais Mermonia, resting her chin on her palm as she gazed at the shimmering waters of Fontaine. The city was calm tonight, a rare silence before the storm of war. But her mind was anything but quiet.

Yoshika.

That stubborn, frustrating, fascinating woman.

Furina had always been good at reading people, at understanding them. Yet, Yoshika was an enigmaโ€”a mystery she couldnโ€™t unravel, no matter how many times she tried.

The way she pulled away. The way she refused to let anyone too close.

The way she looked at Furina, as if she wanted to say something but always held back.

Furina sighed dramatically. โ€œHonestly, how troublesome.โ€

โ€œTalking to yourself again?โ€

Furina startled slightly before turning to see Neuvillette standing nearby, watching her with his usual calm expression.

She huffed. โ€œAnd what of it? I am the Former God of Justice. I can talk to myself as much as I please.โ€

Neuvillette simply walked forward, standing beside her. โ€œYou seemโ€ฆ troubled.โ€

Furina scoffed. โ€œTroubled? Ha! As if. I am merelyโ€”โ€ She paused, then sighed. โ€œFine. Perhaps I am troubled.โ€

Neuvillette waited patiently.

Furina hesitated, then finally admitted, โ€œItโ€™s Yoshika.โ€

Neuvillette did not seem surprised. โ€œI see.โ€

Furina turned to him, frowning. โ€œWhy does she act like that? Like she doesnโ€™t matter? Like sheโ€™sโ€”like sheโ€™s scared of being seen?โ€

Neuvillette looked thoughtful for a moment before responding. โ€œPerhaps she fears what being seen would mean.โ€

Furina crossed her arms. โ€œSheโ€™s already seen. Everyone in Fontaine knows her as the Dancer of Snezhnaya, the Tsaritsaโ€™s daughter. And yet, she still acts as if sheโ€™s invisible.โ€

Neuvillette was silent for a moment. โ€œBecause that is not the โ€˜realโ€™ her, is it?โ€

Furina blinked.

Neuvillette continued, โ€œPeople who hide behind masks do so for a reason. Yoshika, I believe, has worn hers for so long that she may not know how to take it off.โ€

Furina stared at him. Then she sighed dramatically. โ€œHow infuriating.โ€

Neuvillette smiled slightly. โ€œAnd yet, you care for her.โ€

Furina opened her mouth to argue, but the words didnโ€™t come.

Because he was right.

She did care.

Perhaps more than she should.

โ€œUgh.โ€ Furina groaned, throwing herself onto the railing. โ€œWhat is this feeling?โ€

Neuvillette raised an eyebrow. โ€œIf you do not know, then perhaps you should ask yourselfโ€”what do you want from her?โ€

Furina froze.

She hadnโ€™t thought about that.

What did she want?

Yoshikaโ€™s attention? She already had that.

Yoshikaโ€™s trust? That was harder to earn.

Yoshikaโ€™sโ€”

She shook her head, her face heating up slightly.

Neuvillette smiled knowingly. โ€œI believe you already have your answer.โ€

Furina huffed, crossing her arms. โ€œTch. This is annoying.โ€

Neuvillette chuckled. โ€œLove often is.โ€

Furina nearly choked. โ€œWho said anything about love?!โ€

Neuvillette simply turned, walking away as if he had already said all he needed to.

Furina was left standing there, fuming.

Love?

Ridiculous.

โ€ฆRight?
