You and Varian take Eugene down the ladders. You light a lantern and pass it to Varian.
"Why thank you, Milady." he bows.
You roll your eyes playfully "Of course, Sir Genius."
Varian chuckles, "Now if my dad knew we were down here he would kill me, but if he actually knew what (__) and I have done down here he would be impressed."
"Or at least we hope he would be impressed, I haven't exactly been Quirin's good side lately" you laugh awkwardly and continue walking.
Varian catches up to you and Eugene stands still, "I don't get it."
"Through the miracle of alchemy-"
"NOT Magic!" Varian adds.
You giggle, "Varian has found a way to heat this massive tank of water!"
"Yes and with just a single drop of my newest compound." his eyes widened, "Which ill call Flynnolium!!!"
"I still don't get it."
You sigh, "Were going to surprise the village by bringing the people hot running water!"
Varian nods, "We've constructed five of these babies through the caverns.
A strange noise comes from the machine.
"Wait, wait, these tremors... Your machines are causing them?"
While Eugene and Varian are talking you tidy away some chemicals so they don't get spilt.
"No, No, no. Our machines aren't causing them the chemical reactions they trigger do." Varian drops some Flynnolium into the barrel causing a poof of red smoke to come out.
"And no-one else knows you're doing this? Okay, listen kiddo's I'm no expert in... whatever this is, but anything that can cause earthquakes cannot be safe. We've gotta warn people about this."
"No! We can't! Okay? You gave me your word, you'd keep this a secret! (__) has kept it so I'm sure you can! And besides, I am an expert and this is all perfectly safe!"
A bolt shoots out of the machine.
Varian laughs nervously, "Yeah, it does that all the time!"
"We should get out of here." you're becoming nervous.
"There's nothing to be scared of (__), but yeah we should get back the machine should nearly be done with Rapunzel." You all walk back to the lab.
"Team awesome is Baa-aack! Now Rapunzel I know my tests have been a pain in the hm-hm." he puts down the press.
"Aw, I wouldn't say pain..."
She gets an electric shock from the machine, "Now... I would."
"In a moment, this little guy... will give us all the answers we want!"
"Woo hoo answers!"
You walk over to Varian, "Are you sure those machines are safe? I've got a bad feeling..."
Varian interrupts you, "(__), Trust me, it'll be fine." he puts his hands on your shoulders.
"Of course I trust you, I trust you more than I trust myself." You hug him.
You fall to the floor when the lab rumbles.
"Uhh, Look Raps we need to go now!" Eugene looks more panicked than you are.
"Now? Your kidding right? This is almost finished."
Eugene mutters to you and Varian. "Can we talk?"
"Of course! That's what team awesome does Woah!"
Eugene drags you both outside. "Those things down there are dangerous!"
"Dangerous? No, they're not dangerous I- I have adjusted my calculations for every possible outcome The margin of error is less than .56 percent or- no, wait, was it .57?"
"I don't know! Look, guys. I think you're both great kids- smart kids! With great intentions. But I'm asking you- pleasing for you- for the love of my life and your village, to please shut off those machines until a seisma-quake-atologist can come to inspect 'em please! Do it for team awesome!"
Varian looks at you who's struggling to stay on foot, "I suppose we can turn them down... a bit."
You and Varian run down to the trap door, rocks start falling from the cavern, "C'mon! Hurry before this whole place collapses!" you shout while grabbing the lantern.
"You do this one I'll go further down the cavern to do the others!" you shout.
"(__) No! It's too dangerous for you to go down there alone!" he grabs your hand when you try to run down the cavern.
"Varian, what choice do we have? It's either we stick together and do this one by one or split and get them down quicker!! I trust you, it's time for you to trust me..."
He lets go of your hand, "Alright..."
You grab some tools and run down through the cavern to find one of the machines.
Varians POV
Varian watches you run down the cavern before turning down the machine.
"Okay Varian maybe you should listen to (__) more..." Varian turns off the machine. He tries to run down the cavern to go help you but yelps when Cass grabs his wrist.
"Listen, kid, we've gotta get out of here!"
"No, No!" He looks at Cass terrified, "(__) is still down there we need to get her before she's hurt!"
Your POV
Your racing to the machines tripping with each step since the rumbles was too much.
You take a deep breath and run to the machine to try to turn it off.
You grab a wrench and try to turn the machine off but it's on too tight. "Why did Varian put this on so darn tight!"
You grunt but it still won't budge.
"(__)! Which tunnel did you go down?!" you can hear a faint call.
"I'm down here!" You shout, still trying to turn off the machine.
You fall again but this time a gloved hand helps you up.
"Varian! What are you doing here?"
"You were right, now let's get out of here quick!"
You, Cass and Varian, run as fast as you all can and up the ladder.
"Kid, where are you going?!" Cass shouts.
"We still need to shut off as many of the machines as possible. I can't let this happen again!!" Varian shouts.
Cass grabs his wrist and pulls him aside when debris nearly crushes him.
"Why thank you, Milady." Varian flirts with Cass.
You roll your eyes, you're annoyed but you don't know why because you two are just best friends.
"Varian! (__)!" Quirin shouts.
"Uh, oh..." You run over to him and Varian does the same.
"Are you two okay? What happened?" he kneels down to you both.
"Dad, I'm sorry..." He looks to the ground.
He shakes his head in disappointment, "Not again Varian..."
"But Quirin..." you say but he ignores you.
"Is everybody alright?"
You look over to Varian and comfort him, "It'll be okay Varian I'm sure-"
Varian picks up a piece of metal from the ground, "No- No it won't! I've let my dad down... again!"
"Varian, you'll make him proud, you've just gotta keep trying!" you try to hug him but he won't let you.
"(__) I've been trying! Trying all my life! But nothing works! Nothing will ever be good enough." He throws the piece of metal away.
"Varian, you weren't the only person who made those machines I did too, It's not just your fault, I mean how many mistakes have I made while living in corona. Besides your dad is already proud of you-"
"How do you know (__)!? Have you spent all your life trying to make someone you really care about proud!? Before we met you were just some thief we took in! If I didn't stop my dad when he found out you were Starlight- Whatever you would be stuck In a cell!" He stops talking when he realised what he just said.
It hurts for him to say that about you, but it's partly true. You were just some thief a few years ago and you probably would be in a dungeon now. You open up your satchel and look in your journal with all the drawings of the people you care a lot about and tried to impress but ended up disappointing them.
"Yes... Yes, I have..." You walk away with tears rolling down your face as you pick up all of the mess.
Varian stands there for a moment when he sees how upset he made you and he floods with guilt. He walks over to you watching you try and clear up.
"What are you doing?" Varian asks.
"Well, we've gotta start cleaning up sooner or later..."
Varian grabs your hand and leads you to a big piece of debris and sits down next to you.
"I'm sorry I snapped at you like that..."
You sigh, "Its alright, it's true anyway." You look at all the mess.
"Maybe it is true but still, I shouldn't have said that about you... I'm just frustrated and tired..."
You lean towards Varian and put your head on his shoulder.
He does the same but puts his head on yours.
You hum the lullaby your mother sang to you.
Varian recognises the song and sings, "Cast away your worries my dear For tomorrow comes a new day."
You smile and start to sing, "Hold to me, you've nothing to fear for your dreams out not far away. As you lay your head and you rest, may your dreams take over my love." You brush your hand through his hair.
Quirin walks over when he hears the lullaby and sits next to his son putting his arm around you both. Varian leans onto his dad and holds your hand.
They both silently cry it was clear how much they both missed Varian's mother, You miss your parents just as much, but you don't know where they are, as far as you know they could all be looking at us from the sky.
You continue singing while Varian cries with his dad, "Listen close, my son of the west, for your destiny lies above."
"Though the world is cruel, there's a light that still shines, in the darkest days of our lives. When all hope seems lost and you can't find your way, think of me when you look to the sky."
You and Varian look at the sky and take a deep breath.
You continue singing but this time A faint voice from Varian joined, "Child mine, your future is bright, for your father's blood's in your veins."
"In dark times, I pray you will fight, for the world will soon know your name."
You're about to leave Quirin and Varian to have a Father and Son time, after all, they needed it after what just happened.
"(__)..." Quirin calls.
You turn around to see Varian asleep on Quirin.
"Yes, Quirin?"
"Where are you going?" He asks.
"I thought you two would like some family time..." you reply.
"Then sit back down, you are family." He smiles and holds out his hand.
You stand there for a moment shocked he's never said your family before, you especially weren't expecting him to call you family after what's happened.
You take his hand and sit back down next to him, you lean on him as he puts an arm around you.
Soon you find yourself fast asleep with...
Your family.
---------------------------------------------------------
I wanted to use the lullaby again but try to make it a cute scene instead of a sad one, and what could be cuter than; the bean himself (Duh) and Quirin telling you your family :D
Cya later!
