Just as I arrived at my office I heard a faint knock on my door. "Come in." I sighed. A familiar detective walked in with her brunet friend. "You have a day off!" Makoto yelped. "People's life at a stake right now, I can't afford to take day offs." I grumbled and opened my laptop. "I understand that you want to help your friends, but you must care about yourself too." Kyoko started. "According to your subordinates, you rarely sleep and eat. How are you going to save everyone if you'll be in such an unhealthy state?" Kirigiri had a point. "What do you suggest?" I shifted my gaze onto them. "Take a rest for now, eat, sleep. Tomorrow we'll discuss the identity of the second traitor." Kirigiri stated. "Alright." I closed the laptop and picked it up. "By the way, what shall we do with Chisa?" I muttered so only Kyoko could hear me. "She is in close relation with Munakata Kyosuke, it'll be very hard to get her." I noticed. "Let's talk about this tomorrow." Detective sighed and walked away, Naegi followed her.
I enetred my room and closed the door. Taking a quick shower I changed into my pajamas and laid down on my bed. Opening my computer I started looking through all high rank members of future foundation. That's then a sudden curiousity striked me.
What was Izuru searching for?
I went to my search history, but the page Izuru opened was deleted. Did he do that? He is the ultimate ultimate so technically he knows how to hack and code. I guess I can search some things in the archives tomorrow. Taking out my notepad I written down tomorrow to do list. I resumed my search on suspicious high ranks until I remembered Tengan - san. What if it's him? Then, future foundation is rotten to the very core. But it's just an assumption, right? It can't happen, right? I tried to shake off my uneasy feeling as I continued searching through.
After two hours or so I realized that it's all was useless. Even if we find out who the second traitor is what will happen then? If they are of high rank then I'm nobody to accuse them. I must find concrete evidence, but. . . will I be able to do it? With many thoughts running wild in my mind I fell asleep.
I woke up earlier than usual today. I took a long relaxing bath and for once in my life cleaned my room. As I was changing into my work suit I heard the doorbell ring. I cautiousy walked towards the door and opened it with quick movement. "Good morning, miss!" I heard Hiro's cheerful voice. "Hey, what are you doing here?" I continued buttoning my coat. "We came here to take you for breakfast." Mikasa informed. "Hmm. . . detective?" I looked at her as she nodded curtly. "I see." Sighing I walked out carrying my laptop.
As we walked inside the cafeteria I saw three familiar faces. Kyoko stood up when our eyes met. "Am I late?" I sat down next to her. "Not really." Makoto reasurred me. "Mikasa, Hiro, stand guard near the entrance door." Kirigiri ordered as both of my subordinates stood on each sides of the entrance door. "So, what are we gonna talk about?" Ryoto looked at all of us. "The traitor." I answered grimly.
"Chisa Yukizome, she has strong influence on Munakata Kyosuke. It will be risky for us to blame her without any proof." Kyoko frowned. "True, if we make a wrong step we all might end up in the prison cell, or even worse." I added. "What if we spy after her?" Ryoto suggested. "I don't think it'll work, remnants of despair are quite sly. She might notice us in no time." Makoto sighed sadly. "What if we won't do anything." "I agree with that!" Naegi exclaimed. "Shh!" I hushed. "Sorry, bad habit." Brunet sank into his seat. "So what shall we do?" I turned to Kirigiri. "We will let her do whatever she wants and attack when she will do the wrong step." Detective hummed. "Clever." I smiled.
"Now, about the second traitor." Mitarai started. "Who are they?" "I'm not quite sure, but I think it's someone from the headquarters." I informed. "I agree, in order for remnants to take over future foundation they need someone from the top." Kirigiri nodded. "But Yukizume can manipulate Munakata - san, right? He's also in the top." Makoto noticed. "Not really. . . He's second after-" I stopped mid-sentence when I realized something. "So you thought about it too." Kyoko sighed. "Hm? About what?" Makoto perked up as he shifted his gaze from me to Kirigiri. "This might be a possibility." Detective stood up. "Better keep quiet about the traitors, (Your name) stay safe." She looked at me and nodded slightly.
With that our meeting has ended.
NMakoto along with Kyoko left the cafeteria leaving me and Mitarai alone. "So, what are you gonna do now?" He spoke up. "I have to check one file in archives." I brewed myself a cup of coffee. "Can I help?" "No need. I can handle this on my own." I chugged down the whole cup within two minutes. As I placed cup into the sink I walked away, my subordinates followed.
Bingo.
"Okay guys, search for Neo world program." I ordered as I stood up and turned the computer off. "Oh! I saw something familiar earlier." Hiro exclaimed as he went off to some dusty shelf. "This one?" He gave me a yellow folder titled "Neo world program or Psychotherapeutic Communication Simulator." I took the folder and nodded. "Thank you for your help. You're free now." I sat down on the desk and turned on the lamp beside me. "Can we-" Before Hiro could speak Mikasa placed her hand on his shoulder and shook her head. Both of them left me alone afterwards.
I opened the file while my hands trembled. I read down the contents as I began from introduction.
"The Neo World Program is a program created by the Future Foundation, designed to place the user in a virtual world by synchronizing directly with the user's brain.
It's built with the most recent psychotherapy technology and administrative software, with input and research of the prominent collaborators: Ultimate Programmer, the Ultimate Neurologist and the Ultimate Therapist, leading other talented individuals.
By mounting a device to the cranium, the program allows its subjects to experience a 'synthetic virtual world'. It can replace memories formed in the real world with information contained in the virtual world. Therefore, it's possible to undo trauma sustained in the real world through the use of the virtual world, which is why the program is also known as Hope Restoration Program.
The device is for psychotherapeutic purposes only and any other use is expressly forbidden, as abusing the device risks the total destruction of the user's personality."
I checked the next page it was titled as "avatar".
"Avatar
The user of the Neo World Program generates an Avatar, an existence created in the game as a copy of the user's real body. The real body of the user remains in a sleep-like state, as if they're dreaming.
The avatars are constructed from specific memories of the user; thus, their physical appearance and other traits can be very different from what the person is currently like in the real world. For example, the avatars of the Remnants of Despair were constructed by removing their school memories, so they look and act exactly as they did before they entered Hope's Peak Academy. Since they had two or three years of school memories erased, their avatars might look notably younger than their real bodies."
"How the Program Functions
Since the Neo World Program is a next-gen software containing the ultimate reality, it tricks the user's brain into thinking that it's all real as their consciousness is uploaded into the virtual world. Thus, the program's virtual version of Jabberwock Island looks real because the students' brains think it's real.
If the users' brains believe something is real, it's no different than if it actually happened.
The world created by the Neo World Program, a concept like violence never existed and the students are supposed to graduate after gathering the Hope Fragments.
If a player's avatar experiences "death" while believing it's real, their brain inside their actual bodies will stop functioning too. Their real body will remain in a comatose state with very little chances of waking up. If an avatar that needs to be uploaded has been deleted, there's nothing that the Future Foundation can do."
"The Observers
When activated, the Neo World Program generates one or more Observers to guide the users and carry out the pre-programmed objectives of the session. As non-player characters (NPCs), Observers are not controlled by a person; their existence was created entirely by the program, with their appearance and personality influenced by the thoughts and memories of the users.
Usami and Chiaki Nanami are the original Observers of the Neo World Program. Though they did not technically exist outside of the program, they did have real-world counterparts on which their personalities and appearances were based."
It was the last page. I closed the file an massaged my temples.
What is this all about?
Maybe Izuru is trying to help the remnants?
What if he wants them to become normal again? I might be useful for them.
I took the file with me as I exited the archives. "I must talk to him." With this in mind I dashed towards my car and rode off to the Hope's peak academy. "Hajime? Izuru!" I called as I ran upstairs. "There's no need for you to yell, I'm right here." He grumbled while opening the classroom door. "Was this what you were searching for?" I slammed the file into his chest. "You're pretty curious, aren't you?" He smirked as he read the title of the file. "Yes, I do wish to use the Neo World Program." He nodded. "To help others, right?!" I smiled. "Yes." He nodded curtly.
"How can I help you?" I beamed. "I'm planning to leave next Wednesday at one am. But there are fifteen people, including me, we need a car to ride to the nearby port." He stated. "Okay, a car. Got you!" I said. "Is this all that you wanted to know?" Hinata asked. "I just wanted to confirm that." I took the file from him. "Well, goodbye then. Oh, and (Your name) please don't let us down." He looked away and dissappeared into the darkness.
Back at the future foundation I was once again greeted by Munakata and his troops. "Let me guess, I'm arrested?" I joked. "Indeed." He sighed as few men grabbed my wrists and cuffed them with handcuffs. "(Your name) (Last name) director of the 15th division, you're arrested for betraying the future foundation. Your trial will be held tomorrow." He announced and walked away. I didn't oppress, I just followed these men to the familiar prison cell.
