"What's out here?" Sokka asks.
"A lot, actually," Toph voices. "There's hundreds of little-"
"Shh!" Aang hushed. "I know you can see underground, but don't ruin the surprise, just watch."
Aang pulled out a flute and started playing.
"Uh? where did he get that?" I asked Sokka.
Sokka shrugged. "Beats me."
A small groundhog popped up from the sound of the flute. "Ha ha! Yeah!"
Aang played another note as multiple groundhogs poked out singing.
Aang thrwos his hands up in excitement. "I'm putting an orchestra together."
"Orchestra, huh? Well...la de da." Sokka pouts.
"Don't be rude." I mutter.
Aang kept playing as the groundhogs poked their head out on every note, singing. Katara giggled as Sokka started to get annoyed.
"This is great and all. But don't we have more important things to worry about? We should be making plans."
"We did make plans," Toph protested. "We're all picking mini vacations."
"There's no time for vacations."
"I'm learning the elements as fast as I can," Aang states. "I practice hard everyday with Toph and Katara."
"Yeah, he's been training his arrow off." I add.
Aang looked at me smiling. I returned the gesture.
"Yeah," Katara says. "What's wrong with having a little fun in our downtime?"
"Even if you do master all of the elements. Then what?" Sokka says. "It's not like we have a map of the Fire Nation. Should we just head West until we reach the Fire Lord's house? Knock knock! Hello, Fire Lord! Anybody home? I don't think so. We need some intelligence if we're gonna win this war."
Aang played one last note.
"All right. We'll finish our vacations and then we'll look for Sokka's intelligence."
Aang pulled out a map. "Your turn Katara, where would you like to go on your mini vacation?"
"How about the misty palms of oasis? That sounds refreshing."
"I'm with Katara!" I jump on her back as she catches me.
Aang laughs. "Oh, yeah, I've been there. It's a pristine natural ice ground. And I don't usually use the word pristine. It's one of nature's wonders."
We all got on Appa and rode to the misty oasis but when we got there the town itself looked poorly and the ice spring was so small.
"Must have changed ownership since I was here, hehehe." Aang giggles, walking away awkwardly.
As we walked into the building a group of men were standing outside.
"Ohh, I like your outfits," I say examining one of the men.
"And I like yours." He says looking me up and down and spitting on the ground which landed next to Sokka.
Sokka looked at him angrily as he grabbed my wrist and pulled me into the hut.
Sokka pulled me closer to his chest. "Stay close to me Soul, there's too many creepy guys here."
I roll my eyes but grin at his protectiveness.
The man behind the counter chopped up fruits with his swords. "I don't see anything wrong with having one of those fruity beverages while we plan our strategy."
"Excuse me."
Aang bumped into some guy as the mans drink spilled on Aang's shirt.
"No worries. I clean up easy," Aang dries himself with his bending.
The man gasps. "You're a living relic."
"Thanks. I try."
"An air nomad right in front of me. Professor Zei head of anthropology at Ba Sing Se University. Tell me which of these temples do you hail from?"
Sokka's grip on my wrist tightens.
"Owe." I moan. "Why are you squeezing onto me like you're about to die?"
"Sorry," Sokka apologizes. "I'm just so stoked about these drinks."
I roll my eyes laughing. What a goof.
After we got our smoothies we started to listen to the Professor and Aang's conversation.
"So, Professor," Sokka talks. "You're obviously a well-traveled guy. Do you have a more current map? Ours seem to be a little dated."
"Certainly."
Sokka layout the map on the table.
"What? No Fire Nation? Doesn't anybody have a good map of the place?" Sokka whines.
Katara examined the map. "You've made a lot of trips into the desert."
"All in vain. I'm afraid," Professor Zei replies. "I've found lost civilization all over the Earth Kingdom, but I haven't managed to find the crown jewel-"
I cut him off. "A crown jewel, I want to find the crown jewel!"
"Soul, you have enough." Sokka scolds.
"Wan-Chi Tong's library." Zei says finishing his sentence.
"You've spent years walking through the desert to find some guys library?" I disappointedly ask .
Aang and Sokka looked at each other after Professor Zei explained to us the libraries history.
"Professor, would you like to see our sky bison?"
"A sky bison? You actually have one?!"
"Sanbenders, shoo! Away from the bison!" Professor scolds a group of sandbenders as we went to find Appa.
They retreat slowly boarding on to their sand boat.
"Weirdos," I mutter. "But they do have cute outfits."
Professor goes into his bag grabbing something. "She lost the bet." He says handing me the outfit.
"Oh my spirits, thank you!" I squeal running behind Appa to change.
"This girl is unbelievable." Sokka mutters.
"How do I look?" I asked emerging from behind Appa.
The boys mouths dropped. "Beautiful." Sokka mutters.
"I'll say," Aang says walking over to me but Sokka pulled him back. "Don't even try."
As we flew to the library, Sokka took off his shirt, tying it to his head.
"Not bad, not bad." I mumble.
"Like what you see." Sokka teases.
"Uh, what? huh, no!" I stutter. "As if."
Sokka smiled grabbing a telescope and looking into it.
"Down there!" Sokka pointed. "What's that?"
Appa led us to a figure poking out the sand.
"Forget it," Katara sighs. "The building in this drawing is enormous."
Everyone turned their head as we spotted an animal with something shiny in it's mouth.
"What kind of animal is that?" Sokka asks.
The animal crawled up the building and jumped inside from the window.
"I think that's one of the knowledge seekers," Professor says. "Oh, we must be close to the library."
"No," Sokka points to the library on the map. "This is the library look!"
I look at the map. "It's completely burried."
We eventually went inside the library as Toph decides to stay out with Appa.
"Oh it's breathtaking." Zei says as we climbed down the rope.
"Woah," I look around in awe. "It's beautiful."
"The spirit spared no expense in designing this place. Look at those beautiful buttresses."
Sokka and Aang laughed.
"What's funny?"
"Nothing," Aang says. "We just like architecture."
Katara and I rolled our eyes at their foolishness.
"As do I." Professor Zei says in awe.
"My word! look at the exquisite mosaic handwork of this tile- rendered avian symbol- eh, nice owl."
A sound came from behind us as Sokka grabbed my arm as we all hid.
A large black and white owl walked out. "I know you're back there."
I shiver from the sound of his voice. Creepy
"Hello! I'm Professor Zei, head of anthropology at Ba Sing Se University."
"You should leave the way you came," the owl says. "Unless you want to become a stuffed head of anthropology."
"I don't think he'd mind." I whisper as Sokka elbowed me in the stomach, shushing me.
"Are you the spirit who brought this library to the physical world?"
"Indeed. I am Wan-Chi Tong, he who knows 10,000 things and you are obviously humans which, by the way, are no longer permitted in my study."
"What do you have against humans?" Aang asks.
The owl scoffed. "Hmm. Humans only bother learning things to get the edge on other humans, like that firebender who came to this place a few years ago. Looking to destroy his enemy. So who are you trying to destroy?"
Sokka shrieked. "What? No, no, no destroying. We're not into that."
"Then why have you come here?"
"Um, knowledge for knowledge's sake."
I mentally facepalm.
"If you're going to lie to an all-knowing spirit being, you should at least put some effort into it."
"I'm not lying! I'm here with the Avatar, and he's the bridge between our worlds," Sokka says pushing Aang infront of the owl. "He'll vouch for me."
"Uh yeah, I'll vouch. We will not abuse the knowledge in your library, good spirit. You have my word."
We all bow.
"Hmm. Very well I'll let you peruse my vast collection on one condition to prove your worth the scholars you have to contribute some worthwhile knowledge."
Everyone gave the owl something as I was the last one.
"I'm waiting little girl."
I growl at his words. "What do you want?"
He examined my necklace. "Hmm. This is very nice."
"No way." I say clinging onto my necklace."
"Come on Soul," Katara pressures. "Just give him your necklace."
"What if he asked for your necklace!" I snapped at her.
She looked at me sad.
"I didn't think so."
But I took my necklace off throwing it at him.
"Enjoy the library."
"Unbelievable." I hiss.
"Sorry about your necklace Soul, at least he didn't ask for the moon one."
"Yeah." I say looking down at Yue's necklace wrapped around my neck.
Everyone headed different directions of the library. So I decided to examine the books shelves myself.
"Mhmm." I hum, dragging my finger down the book shelves.
"Sun Spirit!" I gasp. I remember Yue telling me I was the Sun Spirit. I grabbed the book flipping through the pages.
The sun and moon spirit, they always are together. They are reborn into a mortal body ever 100 years but the person never knew until one of them are in trouble. The moon spirit does not carry any bending abilities but the sun spirit are known as the most powerful benders, apart from the avatar.
"Soul." I hear my name being called.
I quickly closed the book and slide it into my bag as I ran to the direction where my name was being called.
I found the group as Sokka ran off saying he wanted to find out what happened to the Fire Nation on their darkest day and of course we followed him.
As we walked up to the section of the library, that section of the library was destroyed.
"Fire benders."
"They destroyed everything having to do with the Fire Nation."
"That's so unfair," Sokka yells. "Just when I think I'm one step ahead of the Fire Nation, it turns out they beat us here a long time ago."
"I'm sorry guys."
"Hey, it's not your fault," Katara says putting her hand on my shoulder. "You're not even Fire Nation, you just so happen to be a firebender."
Sokka fell on his knees. "I need to know what happened on the darkest day."
We heard the sound of whimpering.
"Hello, little weird fox guy."
The fox motions to a direction.
"It's seems it's trying to assist you." Zei says.
"Um, sure, I guess I'll follow you."
We followed the fox as it led us to a golden gate. The fox opened it and we walked in.
The fox pushed the lever to a machine. The room started to light up with stars and the moon.
"This room is a travel marvel, a mechanical wonder, it's a planetarium that shows the heavens moving." Zei says.
"This is beautiful," Sokka says. "But how's it helpful?"
"Maybe these dials represent dates and times." I say observing the machine.
"Sokka, try entering that date from that parchment you took." Katara says.
"Shhh, Katara not infront of the fox. He's with the owl." Sokka scolds his sister.
The fox whimpered, so I sat next to him scratching his ear as he sighed pleased.
Sokka moved the dials around, he pushed the lever and the dome changed from day time to night.
"Hey, wait. What happened to the sun?" Katara asks.
"Great. You must have broken it." Aang says.
"It's not broken. The sun is behind the moon." Sokka says.
Sokka and I turned to each other. "It's a solar eclipse."
"It's literally the darkest day in Fire Nation history. Now I get it," Sokka says swinging his arm on Aang's shoulder. "Something awful happened on that day. I don't know what, but I do know why. Firebenders lose their bending during a solar eclipse."
"That makes sense. I mean, think of what the lunar eclipse at the North Pole did to the waterbenders," Katara says. "This is huge."
The fox starts to whimper again. "Fine. You earned it." Sokka says feeding him something in his pocket.
"Ew, was he keeping animal treats in there." I whisper to Katara.
"Who knows." She gags.
"We've got to get this information to the Earth King at Ba Sing Se. We'll wait for the next eclipse. Then we'll invade the Fire Nation when they're totally helpless. The Fire Lord is going down!"
This man is so smart I think to myself. But my thoughts got interrupted by the owl.
"Mortals are so predictable and such terrible liars. You betrayed my trust. From the beginning, you intended to misuse this knowledge for evil purposes."
"You don't understand," Sokka says. "If anyone's evil, it's the Fire Nation. You saw what they did to your library. They're destructive and dangerous. We need this information."
"You think you're the first person to believe their war just justified? Countless others before you have come here, seeking weapons or weakness or battle strategies."
"We had no choice," Aang pleads. "Please. We're just desperate to protect the people we love."
"And now I'm going to protect what I love." The owl says swinging his wings creating a gust of wind.
"What are you doing?" Aang asks.
"I'm taking my knowledge back. No one will ever abuse it again."
"He's sinking the building," I yell. "We've got to get out of here!"
"I'm afraid I can't allow that. You already know too much."
His neck grew as he jabbed his beak at us.
I sent a flame at him as he hissed.
"Hmm. I knew their was something about you." He says.
"Yeah," I say throwing more flames at him. "I want my necklace back."
He hisses as we all run away from him.
"Great knowledge spirit, I beg you, do not destroy your vast collection of priceless tomes." Zei begs.
Aang airbends Zei back before the owl could get to him and he also airbended at the owl causing him to fall.
"We've gotta get back to the surface."
"Sokka, let's go!" I scream at him.
"But we still don't know when the next eclipse is gonna happen."
"Don't be stupid," I scold. "We'll find out later."
"No, we won't. If we leave this place, we'll never get the information. Aang come with me to the planetarium. I need cover."
"Soul and Katara, take Momo and get out of here."
"But-" I cry.
I get interrupted by the owl barging in the shelves making it collapse.
"Go!" Sokka yells.
"Hurry, Sokka!" Katara shouts as she grabs my wrist as we run away, the owl following us.
As we ran from the owl, Katara pulled us behind the shelves as we panted holding each other.
"At least I'll have one specimen to add to my collection," the owl says sneaking up on Katara. I grabbed her hand and we ran off again.
Katara took a bending stance. "Your waterbending won't do you much good here. I've studied Northern Water Style. Southern Water Style. Even foggy swamp style."
"Hyah!" I hear a scream from the ceiling. Sokka then flew down whacking the owl with a book, making the owl pass out.
"That's called Sokka style. Learn it."
"Oh my spirits!" I'm so glad you're okay!" I hug Sokka.
"Sorry to ruin this moment but we have to go." Katara says as we scram up the rope.
We made it out as I hugged Sokka, squeezing him tightly.
"Don't ever do that again." I slap his cheek.
Aang walked over to Toph. "Where's Appa?"
Toph shakes her head.
Aang gasps.
