When you first started your studies in bioluminescence in the deep sea you would have never guessed where it would lead you. In fact if you went back in time and told yourself, you would definitely laugh in your own face. Academically too but that's not even the best part, now of course your studies are very well-known in your field and outside of it. I mean the discovery of fish men! Everyone wanted to read your articles! Though you did bend the truth a bit. You knew if people saw mermaids as what they really were, large smart predators, they would freak so you dumbed them down but it was still no less amazing to the people. 

But the best part was the place your in now. A deep sea air bubble cave. It was shown to you a while back by the first fish man you ever met. A cave with a pond-sized opening that leads to dry rocky land. The high roof and walls had patches covered in shining amethyst that reflected the bioluminescent glow of the greenery on the floor of the cave. Blueish-green, pink, thistle, fluorescent green, and some colors unknown to the human eyes. Corals, anemones, and algae were the main source of these amazing colors but some other plants joined them, some even edible to you, thank god. 

No matter how long it's been, how long it will be, you don't think you could ever get tired of such sights. Speaking of pretty sights, algae isn't the only thing that glows around here. As you said you found fish men. And down here almost everything made light. But you only really care now about two.

One you named Shouta, a black octopus man with red bioluminescent skin markings. They start as simple lines on his face that go down his neck, back, chest, stomach. But once they get down to his tentacles they become more intricate. The best way to describe it would be the symbols to summon a demon in movies. Apparently there used for mating reasons but he won't go into detail. You assume the prettier they are the better chance they have to get a mate. They apparently mate for life though!

And then there's Hizashi, smaller than Shouta but still bigger than you, cute fish man with glowing yellow hair. Going down his body the next glowing part is his tongue, and then his yellow almost transparent fin. Though he wouldn't know any of that, as he's blind. His eyes were just pure white bulbs in his sockets. His glow is for luring in prey, and from how much he brings you it's a successful adaptation. 

At first you were confused about how he hunts so successfully with no vision. Born without like the rest of species. But he simply chuckled and explain that he doesn't need sight, he uses echolocation. Something similar to the way an Orca finds prey if you need an example, except Hizashi doesn't hunt in a pack.

You heard a chirp behind you and smiled, they always say speak of the devil and he shall appear. Rolling off the makeshift bed you've been using, you walked to the pond-sized opening. His chirping died down as he turned himself to where the sound of your footsteps where coming from. You splashed into the water. When you surfaced scaled arms quickly wrapped around your waist, the chirping died down as Hizashi found you now. His sharp teeth, which in one bite could cut a fish in two with no problem, nibbled playfully and carefully at our neck "Theres my pretty girl. I brought you some breakfast."

"Thank you, wheres Shouta?" His chirp mixed with a mimic of a chuckle "Failing to prove he can hunt better than me." His hands began to slide up from your waist, the feeling of his sharp nails ones that could rip through whales and sharks with ease made you shiver but you trusted him always have, to your face. It was his own personal way of 'seeing you' that you honestly found quite cute.

He smiled, those sharp teeth glinted in the colored lights "My sweet mate. My love. My everything. Stay with me like this, please. Let's take advantage of this alone time." You smiled, he could feel your lips moving from his thumb placement which made him even happier "Of course I will Hizashi. He chirped happily as you snuggled up to him.
