When Saturday passed, Sunday went even quicker. Just as I dreaded. I was both excited and scared. I didn't want to make a fool of myself on the first day, but I didn't want to be dreading even attending school.
*Monday morning*
I thought I might be able to guess where everything was. But this wasn't middle school, this was high school. and I've come to terms with the fact that a lot can change without you even realising.
Rory:"what the f-"
I was dressed in a black denim jacket and jeans with a red tartan shirt and a white tank top underneath. My hair was curly like always, not like half the time I looked like I'd just gotten out of bed. I scanned my eyes over the sheet of paper with the details of my classes on. I was clueless and had no idea where I was going.
Right up until n-
Steve:"wooo-"
Until I bumped into a Boy. he stood a few inches taller than me and his hair was dark brown.
Rory:"sorry."
I never normally apologise because either never really felt the need to, but I was new here and I had to learn that if I want to be respected I should show some kind of modesty towards people. Even if they were standing in the way.
Steve:"no, it's uh- it's my fault. I was stood in the way."
But at least he could own up to it.
Rory:"sorry, my names Rory. Have...we met before?"
I examined his face and something about him seemed familiar. I just couldn't seem to place it.
Steve:"well, my names Steve."
This isn't...Steve Harrington, is it?
Rory:"Harrington?"
If it was, he'd changed a lot. And I mean a lot. But he didn't look quite how I imagined him to be. He was way taller, and he looked more friendly than he did 5 years ago.
Steve:"yeah, how did you-?"
I cut him off just before he could finish his sentence. I know I was starting to sound super creepy, but it's better I explain myself rather than make it sound like I'm the new girl who stalks Steve Harrington.
Rory:"I'm new here, but I used to go to the Hawkins middle school."
The high school was set out nearly the exact same as the middle school, it made me feel like I know the place inside and out, but this wasn't the same place I used to go. So Steve's help would literally be saving me from a lot of public humiliation.
Steve:"you're not Rory Alden, are you?"
And there it was. He knew my name, well, that's a start. Probably not the first person I wanted to run into when stepping into high school, but at least he was a familiar face now.
Rory:"yeah. We had chemistry together in 6th grade."
Oddly specific. I don't think he needed all of the details, but yeah. We both had our science lessons together back in middle school.
Steve:"gosh, you've changed a lot since I last saw you."
Rory:"and you grew up since the last time I saw you."
Steve:"gee, thanks."
Rory:"you're also not the first person to say it either. I literally can't even recognise myself in comparison to when I was 13."
Steve:"me neither."
Rory:"hey, I uh- need to ask for a favour?"
If he could help me out, he'd be doing me a world of good.
Steve:"yeah, what's up?"
Thank god.
Rory:"do you have any idea where these classrooms are? I literally have no idea where anything is here."
I passed along my information sheet into his hand. He examined the classes and the group I'd been placed in.
Steve:"You've got all of the freaks in your class."
He let out a laugh and looked out me sympathetically.
Rory:"freaks-?"
I placed my hand onto my hip and leaned over to one side. 'Freaks'? What does he mean by 'freaks'?
Steve:"all of the dungeons and dragons weirdos."
So people do still play that game? I thought I was the only one. Well technically, I haven't played It in years. My levels are still the same and I haven't joined a different group or partaken in a campaign since middle school. Recently, all I've done is sketched the different characters in a note book. No one I've come across in years has played that game, so I simply stopped looking.
Rory:"never played it Harrington?"
I raised my eyebrow at him. He scrunched his face up and crossed his arms.
Steve:"it's just not really my style."
Style? Really? Of all people, style was really his what he was picky about?
Rory:"well what is your style? Working in the video store and hanging out with your cool friends?"
Maybe I shouldn't have said anything, but I'd already said it by the time I could stop myself.
Steve:"how did you know I worked in the video store?"
I'd seen him in there working with a girl once. Well, yesterday. But he seemed to be drooling all over her, so I didn't wish to disturb him.
Rory:"I was wondering around the neighbourhood yesterday and I had a look around."
Steve:"and by the way, we have an assembly this morning. So you miss form room today and head into the gym that's just down the hall. Then science is upstairs on your left. English is on bottom floor room 4. And lunch is in the canteen which is just there. The rest of your lessons are on the 1st floor."
Rory:"assembly? What about?"
Steve:"it's about the basketball tournament thing. But don't go to form, go to the gym."
Well, he was nicer than I remember him being, so that's a start. He passed me back my information sheet and slowly took a few steps backwards before finishing what he was saying.
Rory:"thanks. Well, I guess I'll see you around, Harrington."
I faintly smiled. I checked my information sheet again and roamed every locker into he corridor to find my number. 109.
Steve:"maybe."
He smiled back and turned to face the way he was headed. God knows where. But hopefully the assembly wouldn't be as boring as I'm currently imagining it to be.
